Bluetooth interferes with WiFi in Yosemite 10.10 (reproducible)

There is a long (40 pages so far) thread about WiFi issues with Yosemite. However, I believe it has become a catchall thread for all kinds of connectivity problems and a growing number of "solutions" address only a few of them.
So I wanted to start a separate thread about a very specific issue I found to be easily reproducible: turning on Bluetooth in Yosemite 10.10 interferes with WiFi, lowering the bandwidth in a measurable way. I have tested this on two different MacBook Pro Retina (mid-2011 and late-2013) and an Apple Airport router.
To test is yourself do the following:
Move away from the WiFi access point so the signal is not at full strength
Turn Bluetooth Off
Visit speedtest.net and run a speed test a handful of times (average the results discarding the outliers, i.e. the fastest and the slowest)
Turn Bluetooth On
Repeat Step 2 and compare results
In my case I see a 30% drop in download speed and about a 50% drop in upload speed. I'm not a hardware/radio engineer but I think it's pretty clear that the WiFi and Bluetooth drivers for the initial release version of Yosemite are causing some kind of interference. This is obviously wrong. Unless there is a programmable parameter that can be tweaked for these drivers, I doubt there is anything we can do about it until Apple releases an update with 10.10.1.
Turning off Bluetooth is an obvious fix for the WiFi issues but it is clearly not useful if you depend on Bluetooth accessories and defeats the purpose of may cool Yosemite features like Handoff.
Is anybody else seeing this in their environment?

I also still see the problem with 10.10.2
I posted these stats in the WiFi problems thread (>150 pages by now) but I'll post it here as well:

  • Bluetooth interfere with airport network?

I have had my share of interference issues with my airport network....thinking about buying bluetooth speakers....will they interfere with my wifi network......ie streaming from a touch to speakers?

According to this thread, bluetooth can interfere with WiFi on the 2.4GHz band, but not on the 5Gz band.

  • Does cinema display interfere with wifi?

Sometimes I use my laptop (macbook pro) just on its own, and no problem connecting to wifi... then if I plug it into the display and sometimes the wifi drops... Maybe just irregular boadband service, but I wonder if adding displays or bluetooth or anything like that causes problems with wifi? Anyone else had this experience?

Could...been reported before. Try changing the channel on your router.

  • [W520] Intel PROset/Wireless interferes with wifi connections

W520 with Windows 7 Pro and Intel Centrino N-6300 wireless adapter connecting to an Asus RT-N66U wireless router.
If I have Intel PROset/Wireless installed my laptop can't connect to any wifi networks.  If I try the Windows network troubleshooter it thinks there is a problem with the access point but there isn't because I have a phone and 2 other laptops that can connect just fine.  Restarting my computer or my router doesn't help, neither does uninstalling and resinstalling the wireless adapter drivers..  As soon as I uninstall PROset/Wireless I can connect again.
I've had this problem for quite a while and I just uninstall the software.  I installed a bunch of Lenovo updates recently and it got installed again and I had a frustrating hour or so trying to troubleshoot until I remembered the likely cause of the problem.  I uninstalled it and now things are working again.  I don't think there are any features in the PROset/Wireless software I would even use but I'd still like to know why it's causing this problem.

Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please. I've already tried a lot of your suggested fixes, but without success. Why hasn't Apple Fixed this?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • MacBook Pro retina display - BlueTooth interferring with my WiFi conncetivity

MacBook Pro retina display about 3 years old - when I turn on BlueTooth, it interfers with my WiFi conncetivity causing the browser to freeze while navigating pages on the web

    It
seems to be a proximity issue - when I am very close (same room) as the Wi-Fi
router, there is no issue. When I go into another room, the Bluetooth causes an
issue. I was told that some of the MacBook Pro's had the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
circuitry on the same board - which they later changed. Has anyone else noticed
    the 'proximity' phenomena?

I have a problem with my Iphone 4s since I did my first update at your Itunes, the bluetooth and the WiFi it is not workinhg anymore.
It is sad that companies like apple are not able to support thier sofware and business.
I went to a apple store at South Park, Charlotte NC,
and found out the worst customer service (in my case)
They don't have answers and don't understand about  "dont let any customer go away sad or mad"
I explain to them that I did everything they said to fix the problem, even to dounload the iOS 6.1.3
that was supposed to fix the problem.
they said fix the problem in other phones but not in mine.
So here I am with no wifi and bluetooth, with apple technicians and experts that don't know what to do with the problem that the sofware they developed cause in my iphone 4s.
and the solution is for me to pay $199.00 US dollars for a problem that I did not cause.
wich means to buy something else from apple to fix a problem that it is not my fault.
    Great! what a convenient solution.
I would like to have an answer from you guys and see if someone there have a better answer for me that shows support, values and integrity as a grest company with solutions for your customers.
Dont think that I want a new phone, I want mine fixed if is possible.
Thank you very much and God Bless you!

Apple isnt here. this is a user based forum for technical questions. The solution is to restart, reset, and restore as new which is in the manual after that get it replaced for hard ware failure. if your within your one year warranty its replaced if it is out of the warranty then it is 199$

  • Bluetooth bad with Yosemite ?

    bluetooth bad with Yosemite ?

It goes back a lot further than that, IMO. I have several different devices (MacMini, MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air) and bluetooth remains iffy even after pairing. Devices are typically listed as "not connected" in the popup for a Send even though all are kept discoverable.
With Yosemite, it became worse. I upgraded only the Mini and Pro and tried to send two photos of 1.1 MB each from Mini to Pro this morning. Multiple attempts and no result. There was one attempt where “connected” appeared in the sending window but then actual transmission failed.
I noticed that the MacMini kept trying to send to the destination “Martin’s MacBook Pro (2)” while the Pro calls itself “Martin’s MacBook Pro (16)”. I have never seen this kind of numbering (reminiscent of the numbering of duplicate file names) in previous OS. Can anyone clarify the purpose of it?

  • Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display Issues with Wifi with Bluetooth.

I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 2.3 Ghz model.  I've noticed that while on wifi, when I use a bluetooth mouse or even turn on bluetooth on my computer, the wifi performance severely decreases for a short period of time.  While using a bluetooth mouse the wifi intermittently fails and I need to shut off wifi and turn it back on to correct the issue.
Using the ping utility on terminal I have confirmed this in that when bluetooth is turned on, a large number of packets are lost for about ten seconds.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem and is this an issue I can correct myself or should I contact Apple?
    Thanks

I have the same issue with my macbook pro with retina display. I have 2 macbook pros. I never would of thought that a bluetooth signal was interfering with both of them. I had a gateway wireless router that only had 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b/g, which is the same frequency of bluetooth. I know that bluetooth bounces from channel to channel, whereas wifi sticks to one constant channel (normally). I have reinstalled my mac twice, thinking that somehow my drivers were corrupted. This was false becuase everytime I reinstalled it did the same thing, Act fine for 5-10 minutes and randomly the internet connection would freeze up all together for 10-20 seconds. I have also tried contacting apple multiple times and they tried to do a smc and pram reset. They also tried to get rid of my chaches in my computer. It all seemed to be fine, and then when I got off the phone it would act us once more.
I have read numerous articles to try and fix the situation; one of them was to try change the location of the network and change the MTU size. No help. I called At&T (my internet provider) and got a new router and that did work for a while. But eventually acted up again. The router was still 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g. I read this article and found out that my Magic Mouse might be causing the issue. Turns out to be true. Everytime I would browser the internet or browse the itunes store and it would freeze, i would immediatly turn the bluetooth off and what do you know, it works!!! This is a huge dissapointment in apple however. It seems to be only a macbook pro w/ retina display issue. My other macbook pro only acts up when i'm using my newer one (something is wrong with the bluetooth and wifi in the retina for the 2.4 ghz frequencies.
I just got a Airport express, and have not experienced this issue what so ever. This is due to the fact that it is a dual band wireless router. It supports 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz both at 802.11 a/b/g/n which is a major improvement compared to what I had. I use the 5Ghz frequency and have no issues still.
This is still an issue however because if I want to go out and use anothers persons wifi, I can't control their frequency. So I will still have this issue.

  • Direct TV wifi interferes with Mac

I Have 3 direct tv boxes, and it creates a wifi network that leaches off of ours to connect all the devoces.  When it is trying to create its wifi, it literally brings my internet to 0.01mbs when I usually get 30mbs. Last night I figured out I could turn it off and it would fix my internet, now that only brings me back to 1mbs.  Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Issue 1: The remote control for ATV2 interferes with itues on my Mac; Every time I go back (menu button) on ATV2, itues goes into Menu... and after some click, I end up in the wrong section with the MAc(itues). How do you manage such interference?
You need to pair a remote with each device. Point the remote at the Apple TV and hold down the menu and FF buttons for 6 seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen. Alternatively if you don't use a remote with the Mac, turn off IR.
Share: Not all of my Itunes albums show up on ATV2; it seems it selects random albums
The music files may be in the wrong format or are otherwise incompatible for some reason.
In addition, The picture of the albums, for some, is absent.
May be the same reason, there might be something wrong with the picture format.
Any way to correct this? maybe an app to showcase itunes exactly how I see it on my Mac?
Not sure you would really want that, even though you think you might, it just wouldn't workl
Any other apps that can display video/audio to ATV2 without using itunes?  example, VLC? (I dont want to convert my videos to mp4, its too much time consuming).
The Apple TV doesn't run apps in the way you suggest, it's intended to be inexorably linked to iTunes, that's why most of those that buy it do so. Since it's not intended to mirror your macs desktop or do any of the other things you seem to want it to do, it may indeed not be the best choice for you.

Will the wifi function of time capsule interfere with my existing home network via my Cisco router?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The routers will only interfere if they are working with the same channel. Time Capsule sets up automatically the channel, so you shouldn't have any problem with both routers

  • Problem with WiFi and Bluetooth after iOS 7.0.4 update

    Hello.
Since the iOS 7.0.4 update, I've lost both my bluetooth and my WiFi connection.  As some other users has said on previous reviews, the WiFi button stay grayed and the bluetooth shows a spinnig "thinking" wheel, and that's it.  Before that update, both services were working just fine.
I was hoping that the 7.0.6 update could fix those errors, but my problem remains.
Any Official comment from Apple about this issue?
    Thank you.
