Book photos don't match monitor

My wife and I have created several books and calendars, and until the latest round have been very pleased. The first books we made on our 15" G4 Powerbook and the printed results were very close to what we saw on our monitor.
We have since moved on to desktop iMacs and have found that the photos now print several shades darker than what we're seeing on screen.
Can anyone give us any advice on how to adjust our monitors to more closely match what we will be getting back from Apple?

My first Apple book had a decided green tint even though I'd previously calibrated the monitor. I made the 'preferences' changes before submitting my second book and it came back with excellent color.
There could be several reasons for this…
your calibration and the resulting profile might have been somewhat off and the sRGB profile was after all closer to the characteristics of the monitor.
But I doubt, you would see such drastic differences as you experienced. Most likely you just received a poor print – that happens occasionally and Apple is very good at sorting out those issues.
Also, what's the ominous sounding *very good reason* it's hidden?
The sRGB profile is a standardised profile and does not reflect how your or any other monitor displays colours. Some monitors have a wider, some have a narrower colour range than sRGB while some might be very close. If you use sRGB for the monitor profile, results will be hit and miss. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend using it and also why it’s hidden in the prefs.
If you don’t feel comfortable to perform a calibration, using either soft- or hardware, just select the default monitor profile.

  • Desperately Need Help!!  Prints don't match monitor or scanner. Why?

I'm teaching a Dig.Photo. course in one week on new equipment and I have a huge problem!
This top image is from the Epson V600 scanner as opened in RAW and the bottom image is from the Epson R2880 printer.
The scanned image is close BUT not exact to the original when I open it in RAW, so that's the 1st problem.
I've set the Dell monitors, Epson V600 scanner, Epson R2880 printer and PS CS6 to Adobe RGB 1998.  All running on a Dell XPS 8300 64 bit WIN 7.
    I don't get it?!?!
    Please help ASAP!
    Thank you in advance.

Just arbitrarily setting profiles is useless without actually calibrating your devices, it's as simple as that. You need to read up on how to do proper color management and possibly even buy a suitable calibration device.

  • Geofence locations in "Reminders" don't match address book

If I go into "Reminders" and try set a location-based reminder for Home or Work, the addresses listed aren't the same as the ones in my address book. They're within a mile of me, but never close enough that I reliably enter that location when I'm at home or at work. The post code shown in Reminders is just the first four characters of the post code listed in my address book, and the addresses it gives me do lie within that postcode region.

Sorry all,  re my question above,  since reading a response, from Winston Churchill, to another question I realise that I have two address lists on my iPhone (iCloud and On My Mac). They match each other and (MacBook)Address Book  but don't match the Mail Contacts.  Thanks, M

  • Printing from InDesign and Photoshop - colors don't match

I'm printing the same CMYK image from Photoshop and from InDesign, to a HP desktop color printer. I'm using CS3, all the color settings are identical in both programs, but the printed colors don't match. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    (cross-posted in InDesign forum)

I have had the same problem: an image printed from PS differs from the same image printed from ID. However, I can't very well print as bitmap from ID since the image is part of a spread, including text. I have tried various combinations of settings. I made the PS image to 100% of the ID final size (in the layout). I tried various print dialogue settings (high transparency flattener, medium transparency flattener, color managed, not color managed, CMYK output and leave unchanged ... every combination I could think of). ID does something on printer output. My understanding (at least from CS2) was that ID output to printer uses a PDF format of some sort. I had the idea maybe the ID output did some sort of resampling or re-rendering of the image, but have not prooved that out. I did get some slight improvement in the ID output when the image in the ID layout was put in at 100% (whereas it had been 88% (the original image being bigger than the ID layout size). What I am getting now in CS3 is a clean looking photo in PS, but in ID, skin tones look somewhat blotchy and a bit more saturated. The PS image is better than ID, and while ID is not bad, why is it not as clean as PS? I can definitely see the difference between PS and ID output and know it will show on press, too. Any suggestions?

  • IPhoto thumbnails & images don't match

Yesterday when I opened iPhotos a message came up warning that I needed to rebuild my thumbnails. I wasn't worried about this (I have gotten the message before) & clicked OK. Today while adding some photos to iPhoto I noticed thumbnail images don't match the actual images on file. What can I do to restore things so that all matches.

Note that you posted this question in the iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) forum - it is better if you post in the correct forum - iPhoto 6 - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1116 - as the answers to some questions will be different between the two versions and it is very easy for a user to miss the version listed in your text since they assume that all posts in the iPhoto '08 forum are concerned with iPhoto '08

  • Back up hard drives don't match

I store all my software on the iMac internal drive, and use an external 500GB drive to store all my music, photos and movies. I have another 500GB external drive that I (try to!) use to back up the primary external, but somehow I seem to have a mismatch between the two external drives.
I haven't used cloning software before, just manually drag and dropped files over. terrible practice I now realize, because the number of files in each drive doesn't match.
I'm worried that if I clone one of them that I may loose data on the other if it has files that aren't on the primary.
Is there a way of checking which files don't match between the two drives? I have a third external drive now, and am thinking of cloning the primary external to it, then trying to work out what files (if any) on the old back up external need to be copied over to it....basically trying to start fresh and use cloning software for backing up going forward.
anyone able to help with how I can identify the mismatch in files on the two drives?

Perhaps synchronization software such as ChronoSync would be a better choice for you than a utility that only makes a clone from one volume to another.
    Regards.

  • Can't make multiclip-- 'frame sizes don't match'

Hi, I am trying to create my first multiclip. I have selected three imported capture files, control-clicked to 'Create Multiclip', and a message comes up saying "Can't create multiclip. Video frame sizes don't match". It true that the three clips have 3 different dimensions (720X480 1440X1080 and 960X720). I'm not sure if these dimensions pertain to the 'video frame size', but I do know that Dianna Weynand's book says that clips of various 'formats' can be made into a multiclip.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks, Bob

Well, that is up to you, but my suspicion would be that you will not be happy with 720 x 480 DV (which I hope was shot 16:9 anamorphic) enlarged to 1080i, but it is your call.
If it were me, I would go the other way and make all the media match the smallest frame size, converting everything, including the DV footage to ProRes as the codec. But that is just one opinion, based on the idea that you are never going to improve the DV footage by scaling it larger, and you will do less quality damage to the image of the HD material by scaling it smaller. Of course, it will no longer be HD.
You might want to do some tests before you commit all your footage, and the wiseness of your choice will be dependent on what format you ultimately want to deliver your finished project in, and what purpose that format has.
    Hope this helps.

I have a brand new iMac, love how my photos look on screen and don't understand why the colors in prints ordered through Apple online don't match. They look fine on the screen then come back too dark or too red.

  • OSX Address Book Photos Not Syncing Properly to iOS

I have been having a problem for a while now and cannot seem to fix it...
I have all my contacts in the OSX address book.  I usually add contact photos by clicking on the photo and then choosing a new photo from my iPhoto library.  (I usually have to enlarge and then crop the photo from within Address Book).
I use iCloud to sync my contacts to my iOS devices, but the photos don't seem to sync properly.  Instead of the person's face, I usually get their shoulder, or nothing at all.  The text for the contact syncs fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks,

  • Book photo browser

in previous version of iphoto pnce a phot was added to a book the photo was removed from the pane. Now it is merely checkmarked. This makes it very difficult to navigate large numbers of photos in large books. Is there any way to change the settings so that used photos don't appear in the browser like in previous versions?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I guess it was changed to the checkmarked method so users could use a photo multiple times in a book. It's now the nature of the beast.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive?

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • IOS 8.2: New photos don't appear in camera roll

    Hello,
I am using the latest iOS 8.2 on an iPhone 6. Very often new photos don't appear in the camera roll. As if they were never taken!
Funniest thing is: in the camera app I can see the last picture in the bottom left but when I click it the camera roll shows me the photo taken before that (so it doesn't show me the one which is shown as a small preview in the camera live view).
Any way to clean up this mess? I tried resetting the phone and restoring an iTunes backup w/o success. Thanks!!!
    Cheers Argentinos

Ok, so I got my pictures back, the ugly way though. What I did:
    - made an iCloud backup of my phone (only 2GB instead of the earlier 4GB, because the camera roll was empty)
    - restored my last iTunes backup, this was a month old. It was made right before i upgraded to iOS5.
    - My pictures were back on my iPhone so i downloaded them to my PC.
    - Then I restored the iCloud backup from my phone. The one I made before I restored the iTunes backup.
The pictures where gone again, but at least I had them on my PC.
I don't trust iCloud backups anymore. The backup itself holds all your settings and remembers which apps and data you had installed. But it went wrong when it had to redownload the pictures from the cloud. It was a hard lesson learned. From now on I'll backup my pictures once in a while. I was used to what Apple promises: that everything "just works". No, it doesn't.

  • Photos don't show up in file name order

Photos don't show up in file name order on the iPad. Is there a way to do it?

Apparently from reading other forum posts Apple iPad sorts photos by the date stamp.
Clearly this is not suitable or feasable for people with large photo collections. Currently only people with Apple OS (iPhoto can create a sort order).. The rest of us with Windows based systems are left high & dry.
Does anyone know how to report a bug / problem to Apple ? They have no way of contacting them via email.
They need to have the sorting option in iTunes or within the iPad software itself... ie. Allow sorting by file name, etc.

Is the address on your iTunes account exactly the same (format and spacing etc) as on your credit card bill : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1646 ? If it is then you could try what it says at the bottom of that page :
If the issue persists, contact your credit card company and verify that they and any company they use to process credit card authorisations have the correct information on file.
And/or try contacting iTunes support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
