Borked SATA channels - help!?

I've started having trouble with HDD bays 3 and 4 in my early-08 Pro (3GHz, 8800GT, 4GB RAM).
I first noticed it a few weeks ago - my TimeMachine partition was on a HDD in bay 4, and the backup occasionally failed.
Then the computer started not rebooting (gray screen before the Apple first appears).
Then it started not booting at all.
The stage it fails on booting is very early - before even being able to select which partition to boot from (or even from DVD): gray screen, blank, before the Apple logo or spinner.
So... I tried shuffling the HDDs around thinking one was failing. It doesn't matter which HDD I put in, what DOES matter is that bays 3 and 4 must be empty. If either is occupied, it won't boot.
It also seems to vary slightly with heat: if the machine is cold, it will sometimes let me boot with bays 3 or 4 occupied.
I've tried resetting PRAM, and disconnecting all cables etc. etc. This seems to have no effect.
I also tried plugging a drive into one of the spare SATA lines on the board (a pain to get power to it, but that's another matter). It worked fine.
Since SATA channels seem to work in pairs, this makes me think that this is a chipset problem. I've checked temperatures and they are normal (30°C processors, 36°C northbridge, 45°-50°C RAM).
I wonder whether this might be a firmware issue (IIRC it was updated shortly before the problems appeared). I'm currently on Boot ROM Version MP31.006C.B05 and SMC Version 1.25f4.
Otherwise (sigh) will I have to take this to my 5-week-wait local Apple dealer?

it was the mobo - it was replaced by Apple Service and all is now fine

  • Alpha Channel Help

    Hi
I was wondering how did they get this alpha channel, is there a tutorial any one knows or just what technich its called cause i cant find a thing how they did it
    http://hotfile.com/dl/57865326/b1bed5b/ShockBall.dds.html
I cant upload the image here or from imageshack as its in dds format, and changing its format it looses it alpha channel, i desperatly seek help to resolve this and really appreciate any kind of help

Generally speaking, you manage transparency in Photoshop by using a layer to contain your image elements, and either making the background invisible or deleting it.
There are a variety of ways to make parts of your image transparent.  For example, you can use a layer mask to "hide" parts of it, or you can simply "delete" through parts of it.  Photoshop will show you a "checkerboard" pattern through the transparent parts of your image, as shown here.
I'm not familiar with the .dds format, and I don't think Photoshop can save that format, but you can save an image such as this one with transparency (alpha channel) in a format such as Portable Network Graphics (.png), or Compuserve GIF (.gif).  A quick search of the web turns up a number of converters claiming to be able to convert .png to .dds.
If you'd like to test with it, the above image, saved as a .png with transparency, can be found here:

  • Can't mount my external SATA drives - help please

I have two SATA II drives taken from my now, knackered, PC and I want to mount them from my Macbook Pro. I have a the Sonnet Tempo eSATA card which has two sockets and I have connected that to Sharkoon SATA Quickport Duo which allows me to physically connect to the two drives. I don't need write access, just read access. However, when MacOS goes to mount the drives it tells me "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and presents me with three options "Initialize...", "Ignore" and "Eject".
When the drives were installed in the PC they were configured for RAID 0. I have a suspicion that this is what's causing the problem. Can someone please help me with getting these mounted? Do I need some special software? Am I missing something?
    Thanks all

Seems like I'm on my own with this one then.

  • Best External Sata Setup - HELP

Okay... I know there's already a lot of discussion around external SATA setups... My head is spinning. Just looking for some basic recommendations for people who have done this.
I'm looking for a case that will hold up to 4 drives... I will probably only use 2 at first, but want the ability to scale. What is the best sata case and controller card? Are some Cases/Controllers better than others?
    I'm editing HD 720P-30 video on a Powermac G5. (dual 2.5)

  • N95 Sat Nav help

    Hi
I am not sure if this has a really simple answer (ie pay for it) but downloaded the UK map last week and have tried ever since to start using the Sat Nav.
What ever I tried it just didn't get a GPS signal... Next I tried using my separate GPS receiver and blue toothing it to my N95. It paired perfectly but still no GPS signal received.
Is this because the guys at Nokia want more of my hard earned cash for using Sat Nav?
    Any help appreciated.
    A.

    Hi adrianwalsh
You only need to pay if you want "voice navigation"
Go outside hold phone with keypad slider open at 45 degrees, don't cover the "#" key as GPS antenna is below this. you need view of clear sky away from buildings and trees.
I suggest you open GPS data application to monitor situation.
Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > GPS data > Position > Open > Options > Satellite status > Open:
You will see 5 empty rectangle outlines, you need a minimum of three solid black rectangles for triangulation, but usually get four for lock-on postion.
If you don't get any solid bars by 20 mins your GPS isn't working!
Start Maps on N95 and get satellite lock-on (RED CROSS on satellite icon bottom right disappears) location is then saved on closing application (get message above globe on screen)

  • ICH5R SATA drivers help!!!

    hi,
i have only one hard drive connected to my mobo (MSI 875P NEO-FIS2R). it's a SATA hard drive (maxtor diamond 9 plus 80 GB SATA-150), i conneced it to SER1, wich means i use the ICH5R SATA controller, instead of the promise one... . when i was searching to find the drivers for the ICH5R SATA controller, i found out that only the promise controller SATA driver is included with my mobo, it looks like MSI only gives you the driver for the promise ones, they do include one for the ICH5R, but that's the SATA RAID controller, and i only need the SATA controller, because i don't want to put my SATA drive into RAID. Where can i find the drivers for the ICH5R SATA controller ?
    greetz

Here is what MSI told me to due when I could not get my SATA to run as a serial drive. I still can't because my board is not supported due to the lack of the raid chip on my board.
    George,
Please be sure to apply the latest Intel INF and Application Accelerator drivers for the board:

  • Headphone Jack Borked - Right Channel Not Working

I have an iPod Classic 120GB which was a Christmas present from my boyfriend, and have looked after it like a small, particularly delicate endangered animal since I got it (this makes the iPod less than 4 months old, if that). Yesterday morning, the headphone jack decided to stop working; sound only goes to the left channel while the right is silent. I originally thought it was a problem with my headphone contacts, but after testing my headphones on my iMac (both channels working) and testing the white Apple earphones on my iPod (left channel only; right channel silent) I am lead to believe that the headphone jack on my iPod is borked. I do not have the receipt for my iPod as it was a gift, but it is less than a few months old, and has sustained no damage other than surface scratches and a few greasy fingermarks (which I wipe off religiously with a dry cloth every evening). It has not been dropped or otherwise manhandled (after my cat, my iMac and iPod are my babies, seriously.) *If I take it to the Apple shop in town, will they fix the headphone jack for me?* I do not have the expertise to open the iPod up and replace the headphone jack myself, nor do I want to void the iPod's warranty just yet (I'm saving the third-party software until the year is up.)
    Merci d'avance.

Make a Genius Bar appointment and take it to the Apple Store. They should exchange it with no problem.

  • MOVED: Bios settings for single SATA Drive Help

This topic has been moved to Intel P4/Celeron boards.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=142931.0

    Nope. Didn't work.
I can try things all day but this doesn't make sense. Surely someone knows what bios settings are required (especially on the MSI board site) to set the bios on a MSI 945p platnium motherboard. I have the sata drive plugged into the Sata 1 connector and bios still says it is ide channel 4 master. The computer will boot with just the sata drive plugged in but the problems start when I plug the ide drives in on ide 1 or 2 or 3.

  • Port-Channel Help

So, I had some trouble yesterday with creating some port-channels and was wondering if anybody has seen this before. I created a port-channel from my 6509 to a 4506 and tried to add two interfaces in an active mode. A couple things happened:
        1. Received an error " %EC-SP-5-CANNOT_BUNDLE_LACP: Gi4/11 is not compatible with aggregators in channel"  which i can't seem to figure out why.
        2. I do have spanning-tree on the interfaces connecting but what happened was the port-channel came up with one interface in it and the other interface came up...both in a forwarding state. This cause a big loop as these were trunk ports and brought down the network.
        3. Interfaces went down, but never came back up setting leaf switch all over in an errdisable state.
Can anybody help with any of these? Thanks

  • SATA channels/controllers

I'm using an SATA drive on a k8t neo with the via sata controller. I've seen that performance between the via and promise chipsets is similar depending on what tests/applications you use. I'd like to try the promise chipset but don't want my os (winxp installed on the sata drive) to mess  up. I know with IDE channels, changing an HD to a different channel would screw things up, is it the same with sata?
    Thanks

Sorry, I have to throw my 2 cents in here.  I've been using the Promise since I built my machine in mid-December with no problems.  I think it's worth you giving it a try.  If it doesn't work, you can always go back to Via.  If you want to see my settings, do a search for my name and SATA and you'll probably find it.

  • K7N2 ILSR + WD 160 Gb SATA HDD help

    Hello everybody,
I have a big problem and I've laboured for 2 days.
The story: I decided to replace the old PATA HDD (80GB Maxtor) to SATA HDD (160GB WD). But I can't to install a new os to new HDD, because the Windows install process is unable to identify the new HDD.
If I put back my old PATA HDD and start the old windows, I'm able to use the ne HDD.
Only I can't boot for it (BIOS can't see the new HDD) and can't install a new os to the new HDD.
Fasttrak driver was installed, and it identified the new HDD and RAID Array was created (sriple + 64 kb).
Has anybody idea how I can solve the problem?
    Thank for your help.

vorosp, I can't comment on your set-up, but what I can say is that I loaded Windows 2000 on a K7N2 Delta-ILSR using a 70GB WD Raptor about a week ago - I was helped out mightily by Dr Stu.  I have just tried it again with a 300Gb Maxtor SATA-150, after reading your query.
I didn't set up anything in particular in the BIOS, but I did remove all the PATA drives.  Significant BIOS details are :

  • Bios settings for single SATA Drive Help

I have just installed a 945P Platnium mother board with a Pentium 4 3.4 extreme with HT tech.
I have 2 GB of memory, nvidia 1 gb video 9800 GT, I have 2 IDE hard drives: WD 320 GB(C:) and WD 120 GB (E:) and a CD/DVD drive (F:). I installed a WD 500 GB SATA drive on SATA 1 and the two IDE hard drives on IDE 1 on the same cable with the 320 GB as master and the 120 GB as slave. The CD is on IDE channel 2 as the master.  I have cloned the IDE 320 (c:) to the 500 GB Sata which is now the boot drive (c:).
I have been able to boot the computer but the CD/DVD drive doesn't show. If I unplug the the hard drives and reboot then the CD/DVD drive shows up.
My question is: I want the single 500GB sata as the boot drive (c:) (don't need RAID?). I want the two IDE drives with the 320GB as drive (e:) and the 120GB as drive (whatever) and the CD/DVD drive to show up as (F: or whatever).
I don't know what settings in the bios I need to be working with. I have been experimenting but would like the correct way to set the bios up.
    Thanks

  • 915P Neo2 Platinum (V1.0B) and SATA setup HELP !!

    Hi,
Can any one help me with the BIOS settings for my SATA HDD on an  915P Neo2 Platinum motherboard ?
    Configuration:
    - Antec Sonata II 450 Watt
    - Intel Pentium 4 630, Socket 775
    - Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 SDRAM, 1 GB, PC4300, 533 MHz
    - 915P Neo2 Platinum (V1.0B)
    - 2x NEC ND-4550 16 connected to EDI 1
    - 1x Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 250 GB, 7.200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA/150 connected to SATA_1
I have tested with the following settings:
    1)
       ATA/IDE Configuration [Enhanced]
       Configure SATA as [IDE]
    Result:
Can't format with Windows Setup CD (sp2)
If it formatted with 3rd party utils, then performance of the system is very poor.
    Thanks in advance !

Hi, I suggest you to set the ATA/IDE config as Legacy and check that all your HDDs are detected, if not all, at least your HDD and optical drive. Then continue with the installation. After WinXP installation settled down, then go back to the BIOS and switch to Enhanced again, and then continue boot up to windows and install Intel INF.
