Bought an iphone 3gs from a friend, how do i synce it to my computer now? I cant add any files to my Device sub folders

I just bought an iphone 3gs from a friend and im trying to synce it to my computer i've tried everything to synce it to my computer but it wont let me add files to my device sub folder such as musice, movies etc Anyone have any ideads on how i can correct this issue?

You don't add media (other than music) to your device by dragging. It's by synching.

Are you sure your friend didn't jailbreak it?
If so, save yourself a lot of time and trouble - throw it in the trash.

I dont know if its my computer because it says that the device is unknown and doesnt come up as apple mobile device but I've watched youtube videos that seemed like they had similiar problems but they didnt work for me. I've tried the whole home button thing,updating itunes and everything but the recovery screen still wouldnt go away. This is the first time I'm using an iphone so I'm totally clueless about whats happening.

Installing a SIM card will never rectify the device being in recovery mode.
Put the device in DFU mode and attempt to restore it as new via iTunes. Google "DFU mode" for instructions.

If you mean that you are creating a new iTunes account then the gift card field is optional, it doesn't have to be filled in, you can enter your credit card details instead as your payment method - and no, there isn't a 'promo code'.

When you attempt to reinstall, it will ask for the AppleID.

You can't bypass it, your friend will have to remember or reset his password to be able to reactivate the phone - he should be able to reset the password via http://iforgot.apple.com
