Bought iPhone 4 from colleague and I want to use it in India

I have recently travelled to Colorado for a project and my colleague bought iPhone 5, so I just happen to ask him to sell me his iPhone 4, so he did. Now, I have purchased this iPhone 4 from him. It's an A1332 model. So I know, it's a GSM phone. So my questions what is procedure to use (or make it work) in India?
Do I have to jailbrake or unlock it? Or just by inserting an Indian GSM SIM card (of course, cutting to micro SIM size), will it start working out of the box?

If your colleague purchased the iPhone as officially unlocked or had it unlocked by AT&T, it should work with any compatible carrier. If it was purchased locked to AT&T, they will have to unlock it. Here are AT&T's official requirements and procedure for unlocking an iPhone:

Home screen lock is different than carrier lock.
If the device is locked to a specific carrier for cell service you cannot use a sim from another provider without having the device unlocked. Only the carrier to which the device is locked will be able to unlock the device for service on another provider. -

I have I phone 4s and I am using it from th last 18 Months.I bought it from Singapore and it has the IOS 5.1.1. I an using it in India and I want to update the IOS to 6.1.3 which is available in my Software Updates.
Can I do it? And Can you please confirm that it will not affect any setting and will work fine. I am little bit concerned because I bought it from Singapore and using it in India.

There is no chance. If FaceTime is missing from the phone, it can not be installed.

The warranty is not international and only available in the Country of purchase .If the iPhone is out of warranty Apple or their Agents will also only give service in the country of original purchase.
So if you want Apple help you will have to return it to Singapore or find a 3rd party to repair it if they can in India as long as it is out of warranty and you understand that Apple would never help with that device in future if it has been opened by a 3rd party -

I don't claim that everything on ebay is fine, there are a lot of fakes and such a puchase is for experiensed ebay users ONLY.
But it can be unlocked and until they set it free, there will be thousants sold like mine. I wouldn't wait for some months to buy it from the well known phone resailer in Greece, who could give me no support at all, with a closed contract with a provider for I don't know how many years and pay double as much as it really costs. -

The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required.

Depends where you purchased it. If it was directly from a cell provider at a subsidized price, it may be locked. Orange in the UK does this.

it. Contact them to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Apple does not unlock iPhones - wireless carrier has this responsibility. -

It would seem that you bought a phone that is locked to a carrier in Poland. You would either need to contact this carrier to discuss unlocking, or return or sell the phone and buy an unlocked one. -

The unlocked iPhone 4S did not go on sale in the US until 11/11, and then only through Apple.com in the US.
I don't know if it's available at retail yet, but I don't believe it is.
As you've been told, you purchase a phone locked to AT&T. You can NOT activate it or use it on any other network. AT&T does not unlock iPhones for any reason. Return it to the store you bought it from and get your money back. -

You cannot. The iPhone is locked to Softbank, and only they can unlock it. Problem is that Softbank will NOT unlock the phone, as they do not offer iPhone unlocking.
Buy an iPhone in the Phillipines.
PS Before you go on a rant at Apple, be aware that Apple does NOT unlock phones and they do not set unlocking policies. The carriers (Softbank in this case) set the unlocking policy. -

yes it is very easy...
first of all your phone have to be all paided off.
if your phone is all paid off you can call your carrier (have someone who speaks korean to call) tell them that your moving/visiting your country and you would like your phone to be unlocked. somehow they do this over the phone and it takes three - four days for them to do this.
its real easy.
if your phone is not paid off you can just tell them that your visiting your country and you would like to use your phone there.
