Bridging wifi and ethernet; bring interface up with netcfg

using bridge-utils I was able to establish a bridge between my ethernet port and my wireless interface.  My wireless interface is the source of the Internet connection on the computer, and the ethernet port is going to send that Internet connection to a nearby computer.  My questions are:
Is it possible to bring this bridge up via netcfg, so that the wireless interface connects to the desired router?
If not, how can I use a bridge to bring up a wireless Internet connection using other applications, so that I can write a script to trigger it when I need it?

So I had this working for a while, and lately I've been using it to bring Internet access to my Xbox 360, which is even more distant from the main router than the desktop I had been using.  It is also a much better use of the bridging in economical terms, since the wireless component for the Xbox is $100 (price gouging jerks...).
Then yesterday I tried it and the Xbox wouldn't connect.  After fiddling around, I found two things out:
1. Since the last time I connected the Xbox to the net, I had ran yaourt -Syu, which updated iptables from 1.4.5-x to 1.4.6-1
2. The specific issue is that, despite the following line in my "ethernet-xover" network profile...
POST_UP="iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o wlan0 -j MASQUERADE ; echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward ; /etc/rc.d/iptables save ; /etc/rc.d/iptables restart"
... /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward isn't getting set to 1.  Once I manually set it to 1, the connection works.
So I'd like to take this opportunity to peer review this profile, to a) see why echoing is failing, and b) find out if it is really necessary to restart iptables as shown here.

  • Bridging WiFi and ethernet cards not working

My setup is that I have a laptop with both a wifi card and an ethernet card that can connect to the network via wifi. I also have a desktop with no wifi card that I want to use on the network. I have the two connected via an ethernet cable. I want to bridge the wired and wireless connections on my laptop so that my desktop can be on the same network. When I do this, however, problems arise on the wifi. According to iwconfig, it can connect to the network, but when I run dhcpcd on the wireless interface it times out on waiting for carrier. The bridging in WIndows works fine, but I'd rather not reboot just for this task. Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I am running a bcm4312 wifi card if it helps.

    brctl addif br0 eth1
    ifconfig eth0 up
    ifconfig eth1 up
    wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i eth0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

    iwconfig eth0 # shows it's connected
    dhcpcd eth0 # times out

  • WiFi and Ethernet at same time with Apple TV?

Will the following configuration work?  WiFi Router upstairs is connected to the internet (DSL).  Could I put a second wifi router downstairs acting as a relay, connecting it to an Apple TV via a short ethernet cable and connect to the Apple TV from my MacBook Pro via an ad hoc wifi network?  I don't want to simply put the Apple TV into the network since that means traffic for the Apple TV would have to first go upstairs to that router and then be sent downstairs to the Apple TV.  In short, I'd be using the Apple TV both to drive the TV as well as a router to the internet.  Possible?

Okay, I turned it off and back on and now the wifi symbol shows up instad of LTE. Must have been a glitch.
Also found out we must have dropped the block on external mail accounts at work.
    So, problem solved.

  • Bridging wireless and wired network interfaces

    Hi,
Is it possible to "bridge" the airport and ethernet network interfaces on a macbook pro using Leopard (10.5.7) ? I do not mean Internet connection sharing. That results in NAT.
I recently got a desktop in my room which doesn't have a WiFi interface. I wish to connect its wired interfaced to my mbp's wired interface and give it access to the wireless network my mbp is on. To do this I would need to bridge the wireless and wired interfaces on my mbp. All the results I find online to do this only talk about Internet Connection Sharing ..
    thanks,
    regards,
    Puneet

You can turn on IP Forwarding to achieve most of what you're after:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
This will have the Mac forward packets from one interface to the other without NAT.
However you still need to use separate subnets, and may need to play with routing to get everyone to talk to each other.

  • MB Air cannot see TC 1T '09 while connected via WiFi and Ethernet.

I have a TC 1T 2009 7.4.1 that I have set up successfully with MB Pro and MB White. However I cannot set it up with MB Air v.1 which is connected to TC via WiFi AND Ethernet cable. Internet is fine (Safari) but no TM - when I run APU 5.4.1 it cannot discover the TC it is connected to.
I tried connecting after hard-reset (poke/power on), it would see the TM but then hang forever reading the configuration. So I set it up with MB Pro and MB White and both are now working fine with TC/TM. Then I tried MB Air and it failed.
The TC is connected via ethernet to Sagem router (bridged mode) which supplies WAN and DHCP, it has its own WiFi as well.

And by the way, Hi Everyone, how rude of me not to greet you in the post.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Let applications choose between WiFi and Ethernet

    Hi Forum,
So basicly I'm connected to a secure ethernet line with limitations, besides that I'm also connected to wifi with no limitations.
I want to let apps choose between wifi and ethernet, is there any way to do so ?

(A repost of something I posted elsewhere - trying to help others)
If it helps you at least a little, in the Podcast App, playlists are now called "My Stations". You can add entire podcasts to Stations (and create new Stations), or you can add individual episodes to the "on-The-Go" station.
Not intuitive, and not as good as having the podcasts back with the music, but it gets the job done till Apple listens to the users again and changes this back.
    Cheers!

  • Weird problem--lost network connectivity wifi and ethernet. Intermittent

I'm posting to this board because my Time Capsule is my router and I suspect this is a router table issue since it affects both wifi and ethernet computers in my household.  It only affects the two computers on 10.8.3 at the moment.
Either just after waking from sleep or after working for quite some time on either of these computers, web sites will stop loading.  It gives an SSL error but they are not secure sites.  Mail stops coming in as well.  This is true for any browser.  The network connections test as "green" with the built-in diagnostics tools.  The only fix I have found is to either restart the machine or simply log out and log back in from the user account.  It is very frustrating because we are often working in real-time online.  Standard things we use that are affected are Google Docs for schoolwork etc. and my son's Minecraft playing.  It is especially frustrating for him because he could be in the middle of a "project" with some of his friends online and this essentially crashes what they were doing.
I have called Apple but it is very hard to explain the issue in an effective manner.
Both machines are logged in as managed accounts but unrestricted access.  I just don't like my primary account to be an admin account.  I don't want my kids to install stuff without my permission and the managed user allows me to inspect the logs of sites they have visited at the system level, even if they turn on private browsing in Safari or incognito in Chrome.
Does anyone here have any ideas?

It is possible that I upgraded the firmware on the router right when I upgraded the machine to Mountain Lion but I really don't think I did that. I also have a version of the OLD airport utility so I can see the Time Capsule in much more detail.
    Linda
If it hasn't reminded you to upgrade the firmware in the last day or so it is already on 7.6.3.. Apple stuff is very insistent on upgrades..
In the old utility (excellent) take it back to 7.6.1. And turn off weekly upgrade reminders.. this will reduce the instances of upgrade reminders to weekly instead of daily.

If you are saying that the iPod asks for the password for the network and you do not know it, what may work is to turn on iCloud keychain for the iPod and iPad., Thet may sync the password from the iPad to the iPod

  • Airport (express) extremely slow wifi and ethernet speeds! Please help!

    Hello there,
I am having some difficulty with my new airport express. Basically I got it to use while at university where they only have ethernet. It's like a hotel, once you connect to it you log in via a web browser.
The issue is I plug it in, set it up to create a new wireless network, everything connects to it fine (macbook, ipad etc) but then the speed is HORRIBLE.
I did a speed test on my iPhone (over wifi) and the down speed was about 10x slower than what it was connecting my laptop straight to the ethernet port on the wall.
The laptop when plugged in via ethernet to the airport base station was even slower! Speedtest couldn't even load itself.
I used to use my macbook pro and just share the connection with other devices I had, but I didn't like leaving it on near 24/7.
I'm failing to understand why my macbook pro shares the internet fine with other devices, but the airport express cannot do the same (it shares it, but SUPER slow).
Any tips would be appreciated. I've come here as a close to last resort .
In bridge mode it shares the internet with any one device absolutely fine as well.
Hopefully someone can help me out!
    Thanks,
    Tan

Ha that's highly unlikely they can tell you have a router don't worry!
Right so I figured it out after numerous attempts!! My internet is now super fast to all devices and no slow issues at all!
What I did was to change the settings for router mode to 'DHCP and NAT' and although the airport came up with an error about double NAT, this is actually what we want. So you can click the ignore button.
By changing it to NAT the router appears as one device on the uni network and the devices that connect to it are monitored soley by the router so they don't really appear on the uni network. This means that the connection that was previously split to three devices through one point on the uni network is now only going to 'one' device (router) which is then splitting the connection itself and so it's much faster!
Hope that makes sense I know I haven't explained it very well...
I've left all other settings as default in case you were wondering.
    Good luck!

  • Wifi and ethernet are not working

    Hello guys,
I'm using Mac Mini (Latest 2012) on OSX Mavericks and having a problem with my internet connection. Somehow it just didn't work, the internet connection works perfectly on my iPhone and my Android.
I already tried to reset the network setting that has been discussed many times but simply didn't work on me.
When i use ethernet and wifi connection it always showd yellow dot on 3 bottom criteria on diagnostics.
    Can anyone please help me?

It's not clear whether you tried an Ethernet connection alone. If you do that be sure to temporarily disable Wi-Fi to eliminate confusion.
Apple's Wireless Diagnostics may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
    Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you:
The above result is uninteresting, but if there are additional actions for you to consider they would be included in the screenshot above.
The WirelessDiagnostics-xxx.tar.gz file deposited on your Desktop can be dragged to the Trash, or you may wish to expand it and examine its contents. It's up to you.

  • Any fix yet for wifi and ethernet disconnect?

Running a 17" MacBook Pro with intel. NEVER had a problem with internet connection through wifi or ethernet. Upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion and was dropping internet connection every 20 minutes or so. All other household devices worked fine including iPad, iPhone and other Mac laptop. Reinstalled Snow Leopard and problem is gone. Either give me a fix or return my $30.00.  I am very disappointed. Faulty operating systems are the reason I left Microsoft 5 years ago. C'mon guys, APPLE is better then that!

I appreciate your quick response. I was hoping for an Apple update before taking the time to reinstall Lion, try a few things and if unsuccessful, reinstall Snow Leopard again. My laptop is pretty much useless to me without reliable Internet connection. Thank you for the tip, I'll try it when I have some down time.

  • Bonding wifi and ethernet

There's a Windows software program that can aggregate any kind of internet connection called Connectify Dispatch. I am very interested to be able to bond my internet connections between wifi/iPhone USB and Ethernet on my MacBook Pro (if at all possible)
Why? The ethernet connection is sometimes really good and other times really bad, the same goes for the iPhone. Combining them will hopefully bring the best of both worlds.
I know the LACP protocol is a problem, but if I can tunnel/mask/virtualize/pseudo the iPhone connection as another Ethernet, would it work?

Oh ok. I'm sorry that I couldn't help you! My final reccomondation is that if you wanted to by a wifi hotspot. Here are some reccomendations: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewP honeOverviewByDevice&&deviceCategoryId=13
    Good Luck!
    Hope this helps!
