Broadcast SSID only on defined Access Points?

I'm using a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 5508, 14x Access Points 1041 and 6x Access Points 1031 in combination with a NCS 1.0.
Is it possible to broadcast SSID'S only on defined Access Points, e.g. AP 1-3,7-10,18? If yes, what have I to do?
Kind regards
Kai

Quick question, can you validate the below scenario please
We have seven SSIDs
WLAN           Dynamc Interface that its mapped to
WHSE10          VLAN10-10.0.10.0/24
WHSE20          VLAN20-10.0.20.0/24
WHSE30          VLAN30-10.0.30.0/24
WHSE40          VLAN40-10.0.40.0/24
Office50           VLAN50-10.0.50.0/23
Office60           VLAN60-10.0.60.0/23
Guest70           VLAN70-172.16.8.0/23
we have around 40 access points in the warehouse and 20 APs in the office, and we are broadcasting SSIDs everywhere, means office and guest SSID s exist on the WHSE APS and WHSE SSID s exist on office APs.
Does having more SSIDs on the APs affects its power (Signal strength) in anyway?
APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP- (will add VLAN10,VLAN20,VLAN30,VLAN40 interfaces)
APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE- (Will add all VLANS-10,20,30,40,50,60 and 70)
APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP-( Will add only office and Guest WLANs- VLAN50,60 and 70)
We won't need to broadcast any WHSE SSIDs in the office area so we will add the Office APS to ----  APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP
The WHSE APS will need to advertise both office and WHSE SSID s but we don't need to broadcast Office SSIDs everywhere in the warehouse, so we assign some APs in WHSE to APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE and some to APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP
How does the client roaming work in the above scenario when they move from APs in APgroup1 to APs in APgroup2 (I don't think this will be any different than normal client roaming from one AP to another AP but I want to make sure)
Thanks for the help

    Hi all
I am going to create a new WLAN id/SSID in wireless controller which is Cisco 4402 and once i create it the ssid is going to be pushed to all the access points but i want to broadcast the SSID only to few access points, is there anyway can we do that either in the controller itself or from WCS. please let me know
    thanks

    Hello,
Yes, you can shape that traffic. Its call Cisco AP Groups. You can simply check the config guide for confi efforts. What code are you on, if you are on 4.2 you can do WLAN Overide.

  • Define access point to connect?

A couple of applications on my phone, particularly Ovi Maps keep doing this and it's getting REALLY annoying.
Start using the application, it comes up with the following:
"Network connection required.Define access point to connect?
Then it'll give me a selection from a list of my networks various protocols.
It will regularly ask me again and again while the app is running, often coming up in front of other applications i am using at the time!
    How can I stop this?
I don't want to have to define anything for specific applications. I want my phone to connect in one of two ways without my input:
    1. If I am within range of a Wifi connection it knows, connect via that.
    2. If not, connect via 'O2 Active'
Is there a way I can set this so my phone just does the above and never asks again?

It is the Assisted GPS positioning method access found in Menu > Settings > Application Settings > Positioning > Positioning server use which keeps asking for a Network access point not OVI Maps application itself which may be set "Offline" or "Online".
If you have not set "Save location info" = No - in Camera > Options > Settings - you may get the same response.

  • SSID set on specific access points

    Hi All,
I have an installation of 1 wireless controller at a head office and some access points distributed to two locations. One of these locations has requested a guest wireless access. Please advise if i can setup the guest wireless ssid to only be projected from the aps in one location?
I would not like to have both locations see the SSID.
    Thanks

Yes you can. You just need to use AP Groups which allows you to specify what SSID and interface you want that ap to use. Then if you want to drop off the traffic locally you can setup the APs in FlexConnect mode.

  • SSIDs and VLAN on access points

The commands to map an SSID to a VLAN on an IOS access point are basically like this:
    [snip]
    dot11 ssid MYSSID
    vlan 5
    interface Dot11Radio0
    ssid MYSSID
    interface Dot11Radio0.5
    encapsulation dot1q 5
    bridge-group 5
    interface FastEthernet0
    interface FastEthernet0.5
    encapsulation dot1q 5
    bridge-group 5
    [snip]
My question is this: what does the command "vlan 5" actually do? Does it map MYSSID to bridge-group 5, which is then mapped to 802.1q tag 5 by the subinterface configurations (so that the tag number is arbitrary), or does it map MYSSID to 802.1q tag 5 on the radio interface, which is then bridged to the appropriate dot1q subinterface on the wired side by the bridge group (so that the bridge group number is arbitrary)?

Vlan tag is tied to SSID and Bridge group is also tagged to appropriate vlan mentioned as bridge group number

  • RTP300 used only as a access point on LAN with WRTP54G

  • AirPort only sees the access point I am connected to

    Friends,
I am aware of numerous discussions on these forums revolving around AirPort and wifi-issues. I have searched by cannot find this one with its own thread, and think the issue might be buried in there with others.
One peculiar issue I see is that when I am not connected to any wifi network, AirPort will see them all and ask which one I want to connect to. However, when I select a specific network and bind to it, all of the other networks disappear in the drop-down box activated when you click the signal strength meter.
On a day-to-day basis, this doesn't matter, but sometimes, if I want to configure a travel wifi router at home, I have to jump through a few hoops so that my MacBook Pro will see the other one.
Perhaps this monogamous behavior is intended, but I would like to be able to "interact" with different access points whenever I'd like.
This issue must have been already reported; I just can't find it. Apologies in advance if this is a redundant report. I am running 10.5.1

No, do not hit reset .. it is not a WPS button.
Apple products do not use WPS, so no WPS button is needed. And they have no need to implement one.. nothing exists outside the Apple bubble.. didn't you know that??
Read the forum expert Tesserax instructions for using WPS. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16034147#16034147
But it is better to plug in your printer to a mac by usb and use the disk provided to do a full manual setup of wireless.. WPS is simply the easy way.

  • Similar SSID for two 1252 access points

Hi, we currently have one 1252 AP. It has two Vlans. One for data and one for voice. Just bought another 1252 AP and going to have similar setup.
I read I can have similar SSID so that uses don't need to re-authenticate to the other AP. If this is true, can I just copy the config.txt file to the other AP, except of course I'll change the static IP addr of the AP. Pls advise, thks.

    Hi sohocisco,
Keeping the same SSID/VLAN will ensure that L2 roaming is possible, which is what you want. Depending on your authentication methods, though, you may need to configure WDS in order to ensure for seamless roaming as you describe.
Note that this is only if you're using and EAP or WPA (non-PSK) authentication method. Please see this document for configuration assistance:

  • Access points defined double times

Hi, after recent upgrade of my N95 8GB firmware to 15.0.015, I noticed that some of the Access Points are defined twice. These doubly-defined access points are all my telco Access Points (MMS AP, Video streaming AP, Internet AP, WAP AP).
If I try to delete one of the, both gets deleted.
I know I can just create them back one by one by getting the settings from my telco. But it seems troublesome, and I am more interested to get at the root cause of the problem to fix it permanently. (When I restored from backup, which I am very sure prior to the back the access points were not appearing double times, they still come back double times on my phone.)

Found it too - it is so bizarre!
I guess, in the big picture, the connections still work but why are they doubled up?

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points

    Hi Guys,
I would like to go for "Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points 1300". I want the AP to broadcast only 1 SSID. The client find the SSID ->put in his user credential->Raudius athentication->assign him to an specific vlan based on his groupship.
The problem here is that I don't have a AP controller but only configurable Aironet Access Points 1300. I can connect to the radius server, but I am not sure how to confirgure the AP's port, radio port, vlan and SSID.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml#switch
    I go through some references:
    3.5  RADIUS-Based VLAN Access Control
As discussed earlier, each SSID is mapped to a default VLAN-ID on the wired side. The IT administrator may wish to impose back end (such as RADIUS)-based VLAN access control using 802.1X or MAC address authentication mechanisms. For example, if the WLAN is set up such that all VLANs use 802.1X and similar encryption mechanisms for WLAN user access, then a user can "hop" from one VLAN to another by simply changing the SSID and successfully authenticating to the access point (using 802.1X). This may not be preferred if the WLAN user is confined to a particular VLAN.
There are two different ways to implement RADIUS-based VLAN access control features:
    1. RADIUS-based SSID access control: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server passes back the allowed SSID list for the WLAN user to the access point or bridge. If the user used an SSID on the allowed SSID list, then the user is allowed to associate to the WLAN. Otherwise, the user is disassociated from the access point or bridge.
    2. RADIUS-based VLAN assignment: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server assigns the user to a predetermined VLAN-ID on the wired side. The SSID used for WLAN access doesn't matter because the user is always assigned to this predetermined VLAN-ID.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Autonomous APs have the option for AAA Override.  On the WLC, I can go into the BSSID, Security, Advanced, and there's a checkbox that I would check to allow a Radius server to send back the VLAN.
I did a little research and it looks like the 1300 may give this option but instead is defined as "VLAN Override".  I've found the release notes for 12.3(7)JA5 (not sure what version you're running) that give mention and a link to configuring EAP on page 4: http://www.ciscosystems.ch/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1300/release/notes/o37ja5rn.pdf

  • Wireless Roaming with more than one access point

    Dear All,
I am trying to set up roaming access points around my home. My main router is the Hub 3 and what I am doing is setting the SSID and channel i want on the hub 3 then setting the same SSID on the additional access point (WNR1000v3) and disabling DHCP on the additional access point and setting a static IP and a different channel to the one  on the hub 3.
The problem I am getting is that my devices (android smartphone and tablet) will either only connect to one of the access points when I am near it and then when I go to the area that the hub 3 is in it drops the connection.
I want to know why this is happening because at another house where I work I have additional access points broadcasting the same SSID as the home hub 2! which works.
Please could someone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it.
    Many Thanks,
    Dominic

    Thanks for the reply Keith,
But why does it not allow for Roaming?
There is an internal Ethernet switch which routes the Ethernet frames to a specific device MAC address, via the wireless module, or the LAN ports, but not both.
Once a device MAC address appears on the LAN side, all frames are routed to that interface, until the physical interface is disconnected.
That prevents the same MAC address connecting to the wireless interface.
Universal wireless repeaters do not have that problem, as all connections take place on the wireless interface.

  • Specify an access point.

    Hi all,
I have a wireless network in my house, with a wireless extender from Dlink to reach those out of the way places.
I'm wondering if there is a way to specify which access point you connect to.
One things to keep in mind:
The extender has the same ssid as the main access point.
On my xp box, I there is a spot to specify the mac address that you want to try first ... just trying to find the same thing using OS X ... 10.4.5
If you're wondering why ... the extender only has half the available bandwidth because of the way it works .. half to connect back to the main router, other half for people connecting to it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Blue
    iBook G4 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

In reality, this shouldn't even be a user option but my guess is XP doesn't do wifi correctly without some manual assistance. The wifi subsystem of the airport card should automatically detect multiple access points for a single SSID and dynamically switch based on of the signal between the two.
Of course, this is tricky if the extender isn't full bandwidth as I'm not sure the algorithm checks bandwidth (i think there's an assumption that a network with multiple access points wouldn't be unbalanced).
I'm be curious if anyone knows if it does. One thing you could try (you'll need someone to help) is to get close to your extended and have someone disable the primary. If you notice a temporary signal stall and quality change it means that you were still on the primary. You could also monitor he base station ID in the internet connect.
Rinse and repeat until you find the range balance and then decide on your own if its appropriate.

Perform these steps to configure integrated routing and bridging on VLANs, beginning in global configuration mode:
    1 ) bridge [number | crb | irb |mac-address-table]
    2) interface name number
    3) bridge-group number
    4) bridge-group number parameter
