Broken Mac SE 30?

Hi everyone,
This is a long shot but worth and ask I feel.
I have managed to find a Mac SE 30 that was going in the trash at work so took it home. The Mac itself does start up but only to a flashing floppy disk icon and nothing more. It looks like it has a floppy disk stuck inside it which the paper clip release doesn't do anything. You am push am entire paper clip trough the hole without hitting a thing.
I have looked online to see what can be done but I still can't find much. From why I found I think the hdd is broken and I can't be sure what's happened to the floppy drive.
Can anyone give me advice of how to get it working again? Or in the event its just a paper weight, then any neat mods I could do to it?
Thanks

You might find some parts or even a dead SE that appears to have collapsed from something other than your problem. Some forums about old Mac hardware have swap and sale sections. Below are some links I have gathered that may help. Good hunting.

  • Find & fix broken Mac files || make my Mac cleaner

    Good afternoon folks,
I have decided to clean up all the mess in my Mac a little bit.
So, I would like to ask you:
is there any software (or maybe I could do something by myself to deal with this issue) which could find and fix broken Mac files?
is there any software (or maybe I could do something by myself to deal with this issue) which could make my Mac cleaner, like deleting cache or broken "trash" files, in other words, by this way making my Mac work faster?
Talking about my Mac, it is a new MacBook pro 15-inch model, with the highest specifications, which was bought in this June. It has also installed Mac OS, Lion inside.
    Thank you in advance.

If you think your hard drive is corrupt, repair it as Sonicray has suggested.  As to whether the contents of a file are bad, only the program that created the file can possibly know that, except for certain standard formats like JPEG.  What kind of files are you worried about?

There are many programs that will clean your caches to "make your Mac faster."  Which begs the question: why is the cache there in the first place?  To give cache cleaners something to do?  No.  The answer is that the cache is there to keep your Mac running fast, and constantly clearing it out interferes with that and will actually harm performance!  Clearing caches should be a troubleshooting step only, not regular maintenance as many would have you believe.
Not sure what "broken trash files" are...
Basically, your Mac does not need any constant fussing-with to keep it running well, like a Windows machine does.  Keep about 10% or more of the hard drive free at all times, check the hard drive with Disk Utility before installing any system updates, and keep a good set of backups.  That's about all you need to do regularly.

  • Does apple take payments for for fixing broken Mac Pro?

Broken Mac Pro that needs to be fixed and I do not have 700 to fix it. Do they do a payment plan for fixing the Mac Pro?

If you are dealing directly with Apple in the US, you can ask for a Depot Repair. It may require the approval of the Store Manager, so be sure to be nice to everyone you deal with.
This takes about a week, subject to parts availability, and your MacBook is shipped to a regional Depot where it is returned to "operates as new" condition (based on a list of defects you provide) except for existing scuff marks on the case. The service is provided at a lower flat rate -- about half the cost of an in-store motherboard replacement. Anything on your "laundry list" will be looked at and addressed.
I submitted one MacBook for this treatment for a screen problem, and I complained that the top case was also cracked. They replaced the entire top case and the keyboard in it, all included.
If your MacBook has unauthorized modifications, such as an SSD in the DVD bay, these must be removed before submitting your machine for this service. Otherwise, your machine will be returned to you un-repaired. Aftermarket drives and memories installed in the expected spaces are acceptable.
Other than the time required, I do not know what or why some repairs might qualify for Depot Repair. If anyone reading knows, please speak up!

  • Beige g3 desktop. Broken mac icon, burned zif?

    Hi People.
I recently bought a beige g3. It has 192 mb ram and a 8gb hd.
I took the hard disk and connected it to a firewire case to duplicate my os 9 system from my g4 computer. When I placed the drive back in the g3, I tought it would be nice to conect it to the zif (is it called so?), I mean, the card that is atached next to the pci slots, with ata and scsi ports, so that I could remove it whenever I wanted.
The mac didnt start up, and a chip in the zif card smells like it smoke. Now, when I start the computer, there is a broken mac icon (not a system folder icon but a broken computer icon).
I dont know if this could be fixed... I installed all parts in the places they were before but it wont start up.
Any help will be apreciated. I was so happy with my new old mac...
    Pepo

Grant. I did not get back to you earlier because I wanted to make some tests.
The machine would not start up from any os cd. I disconected the hard drive and then it did start up (from cd of course). Replaced the hard disk and now everything is fine, Still the burned hard disk works perfect in a firewire enclosure. However, If I try to format it in os 9, it tells me it is unsuported... So I think some part of the disk got burned and was hanging the g3.
The personality card has a burned chip, but still, audio in and out work, but there is a lot of audio interference...
But it was thanks to you that I kept testing, otherwise I would have persisted with the idea that the computer would never start up again.
    So thanks again.
BTW, I have been to Boston, beautiful city.

  • How do I move files from a broken Mac Book to an external hard drive

I have a broken MacBook pro, the hard drive failed and I want to move the files onto an external hard drive.  I know I can transfer the files onto the external hard drive by running the software on the external hard drive and accessing the files on the Mac Book, but I dont know how to do it.

How can you do that if the drive has failed? You cannot access a failed drive unless it is actually still functioning.
To access from an external drive you need to install the operating system on the external drive then boot the computer from the external drive. You can then access the internal drive in order to copy files and folders from it to the external drive.

  • How do I transfer a license of Logic Pro Studio from a broken Mac to a new one?

I need some help here with this. I previously installed Logic on my now broken (water damage) Macbook Pro and now I'm looking to get it installed on this new one. Thanks in advance.

There is no license transfer. You either installed from the DVD and enter your serial number again, or - if you bought it in the Mac App Store - you just re-download it.

  • Need to boot broken Mac-Mini using retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD

    Hi,
    In Summary:
    ==========
I have Mac Mini (late 2009) which does not boot anymore and I need to install Snow Leopard using retail DVD (version 10.6). The OS/installer from the DVD does not seem to boot either. I always very much appreciate the efforts of true geeks. So please, any casual beginner, please do not demoralize with something like "cannot be done" etc.
    The complete story:
    ==================
    The start of the problem:
    1. All of a sudden, one fine day, on start up, my Mac Mini strated to shut itself down without no apparent reason to me. When trying to boot, it would show a progress bar for about 5 minutes - I am assuming that was disk-consistency check being performed. My best guess is that right after the use of Carbon-Copy Cloner (but I am not 100% sure) it all strated to happen.
    2. Performed Mac's Disk-Util check and [Verify Volume] used to display "invalid directory item count, should be 31 instead of 29". Surface scan said disk hardware is 100% fine. Volume Repair never worked, since OS X was installed on the primary disk. I lost the DVDs that came with this Mac Mini, so the option to boot from that DVD and launch Disk Util etc. was not possible.
    TechTool Pro - No Help:
    3. Started googling and had to choose between [TechTool Pro] and [Disk Warrior], opted for TechTool Pro. Tried its bootable DVD only to learn that TechTool Pro cannot fix it. Again, it's surface scan suggested disk hardware is 100% fine. Sent the details to TechTool Pro support team, they couldn't help either after a couple of e-mails+data exchange. (How do I claim my lost money with TechTool Pro - suggestions appreciated as well).
    Googling / Mac Forums:
    4. Started looking into forums, learnt that someone had successfully repaired this problem using Ubuntu 11.04 install DVD (i.e., without installing the Ubuntu, but just using its 'try from DVD' feature). I had that handy, but forgot to disable HFS+ journaling before attempting to fix the problem. Anyway, attempting volume repair that way couldn't fix the problem as well. However this step took away my ability to boot from Mac.
    5. However using Ubuntu's bootable disk, I could access Mac-HDDs contents - and was able to successfully back-up *all* my important data.
    6. Googled and learnt that just attempting to boot using Ubuntu DVD can take away ability to boot using Mac bootable media - possibly due to EFI internals. Suspecting EFI is now corrupt, I tried other 'hacks' like:
6.1 eEFIt Boot Disk - which does not work at all,
6.2 Empire EFI w/ Chameleon - not sure how to proceed with options presented - trying either does not work,
6.3 Super GRUB2 - boots fine, but attempting to boot from Mac-HDD fails after a couple of seconds,
6.4 Boot-132 - boots fine, prompt asks for input, but then I cannot eject/replace the DVD due to Mac-Mini (lack of) design,
      6.5 Ubuntu 11.04 / 11.10 - still boots fine - just that I cannot go into Mac-OS-X from here,
6.6 TechTool Pro bootable DVD - which used to boot fine earlier stopped to boot.
As you can see, none worked successfully. So I didn't yet try other popular rescue media - as I suspect that is not the direction I need to go into.
    >> Looks like most of my problems are due to the fact that I have Mac-Mini which does not allow eject/replace of DVD from command prompt / out side of Mac-OS-X.
    7. Tried emptying EFI partition, playing with EFI/Mac-OS partitions boot flags, Zapping the PRAM, nothing still allows me to boot either from Mac-HDD or any Mac-Bootable-DVD.
    Current State:
    8. Now while boot time, Mac displays a gray screen for a few seconds, and then a blinking prompt on black background. That's it!
Snow Leopard 10.6 Retail Install DVD:
    9. Went to Mac store and bought this DVD only to witness that I can't boot from it as well. (This is a huge shocker, how is Apple able to sell these DVDs if these don't work on genuine MacMini itself. After all we are able to boot from and install Windows/Linux on a variety of Machines).
I am hoping for a very small step/fix that I am missing, since I can still see and access all Mac-HDD contents after booting from Ubuntu bootable DVD. However I am prepared for a good amount of exercise as well - assuming someone posts a valid/verified fix.
    Things available right now:
    ==========================
    A. Genuine Mac-Mini (Late 2009) who lost it's ability to boot either from its HDD or Mac-bootable DVDs (TechTools Pro, Mac OS X retail DVD)
    B. Mac OS X 10.6 Retail DVD
    C. NOT AVAILABLE - DVD that came with this Mac-Mini
    D. Variety of rescue DVDs, listed in section 6 above
    E. Another machine/PC with Ubuntu 11.04 - giving me ability to access internet
    Thanks for reading.

I had a similar discussion recently with another user.
Your Mac mini (late 2009) originally came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 build 10A432 or build 10C2234 see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 it would have come with an original install disc specific to your model of Mac which you could use to run Disk Utility from or to do a complete reinstall.
The retail boxed copy of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was originally intended for older Macs which had previously come with Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4. It would have on it a version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.1 which would be able to boot these older Macs, but had no need to boot newer Macs which were released after the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 since all those newer Macs already shipped with their own discs.
So it is normal that the retail boxed Snow Leopard installer does not work on your model Mac mini. You should be using the one that shipped with your Mac mini instead. I am guessing you have lost it.
Assuming you have lost the Mac mini original disc, I can suggest the following options to try and workaround this.
If you have another Mac, an older Mac, one that will be bootable using the retail Snow Leopard install disc you have, you could do either of the following.
Connect an empty external GUID partitioned hard disk to this other Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the external drive and connect it to your Mac mini and boot from it by holding down the Option key when you turn the Mac mini on
or a similar process if you want to wipe the Mac mini and reinstall directly on to it
Boot the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 )
Connect the Mac mini as an external hard disk to the other older Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the Mac mini and boot from it as normal
Note: While the Mac mini is connected in FireWire Target Disk mode to the second Mac, you could backup (if you don't already have a backup) any files you need to retrieve.
If you don't have a suitable second Mac you may have to either borrow someone else's, or get the help of an Apple Store if one is in your area.

  • How do you transfer files from an internal hard drive in a broken Mac?

My iMac G5 broke a while back, the power comes on but nothing comes on my screen and the fan goes into overtime. I don't mind not fixing it but I would like to take the files from my hard drive. How would I go about this?
I've tried using a firewire cable but to no avail.

all i can think of is to remove the HD from the Mac, put it in an external enclosure, and use data recovery software such as Data Rescue or FileSalvage to retrieve the data.
    good luck !

  • 13.1 source formatting broken (Mac)

I see the update news this morning and I'm like "Cool! Maybe I'll give old DW another chance, it's been such a long time, lets see how it's matured!"
Five min in I notice that auto-indent and "apply source formatting" are both broken.  I just assumed this was the tip of the iceberg and went back to doing work with SublimeText.

Ya, I could use some help... justifying my 50$/month payment.
Dreamweaver continues to have an identity crisis, like many adobe products. Who exactly is Adobe targeting with this app?
Where exactly do Adobe edge code and reflow fit into this equation?  Will they be part of DW one day?  Or will they pull a "Fireworks" and kill them in favor of an inferior bloated legacy product?
These lingering, nerve-wracking questions have forced many pros to look for alternatives to Adobe products. Some of which have become pretty solid.
So, back to you're original question, yes, if it isn't obvious, this is a rant.  :)

  • Logic broken, mac book pro 15", i7 2.2 ghz, 8 Gb RAM - Later 2011

    I have a mac book pro 15", i7 2.2 ghz, 8 Gb RAM - Later 2011
I have the same problem many users who purchased this model.
He broke his logic. Due to the large number of people with the same problem, I consult if Apple has a solution to meet Apple loyal customers.
Remember the high cost of purchased equipment.
Thank you very much for your time.
    regards
    rafael martino

    Rafael,
no, Apple has not acknowledged a problem with the 15-inch Late 2011 MacBook Pro in a similar way to how they had acknowledged a problem with the 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Because of this, unless you have an alternative means of legal redress, you would need to pay for a replacement logic board.

  • Gmail compose - command left/right still broken (Mac)

This question was [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/767732 asked previously] , and was marked solved, but was never really solved.
In the 'Compose mail' window of GMail the shortcut Command-left arrow or Command-right arrow to jump to respectively beginning or end of a line, is not working. It works fine in Chrome, and Home/End work fine in Windows, but I'd rather stick to Firefox on my Mac.
A solution was proposed on the link above to remap those key combinations to Ctrl-A/Ctrl-E using other software, but these solutions are overkill, and still do not let you highlight to the beginning or end of the line using Cmd-Shift-Left/right.
Can someone at Mozilla or Google please comment?

This problem has been marked "solved" but isn't solved at all. This problem still exists, and is infuriating to any Mac/Firefox/Gmail users who like to stick to the keyboard. I've also noticed this happens in other google apps (blogger, docs, etc).

  • How to i retrieve files from a broken mac

    hey cool cats,
my macbook from late 2010 is a bit buggered. I have had a look online, but I can't seem to find quite what I'm after. when I turn it on, I get the grey screen/apple symbol screen, and it will turn off after ten seconds or so. it was lagging quite a bit before that, I was trying to back up all my files but it didn't work (of course) and then it just crashed. I've run the verify/repair disk options on disk utility, and have determined that I have an invalid node structure. I'm fine with deleting and re-installing everything, but I just want to recover some files first. any suggestions on how to do this would be super cool.

Did you repair the drive, not verify? If so was DU able to repair it or failed with the invalid node structure error? If so, then one option is to get Disk Warrior which usually will repair such errors.
You can remove the drive to an external enclosure for access on another Mac. Or if you have another Mac nearby you may be able to connect the two via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire - to transfer your data.
If you happen to have a bootable backup of the hard drive, then you can boot the computer from the backup and recover you files.
