Broken mds and Spotlight...

Hi,
I tried using my AppleCare contract to try to get to the bottom of the
"mds keeps crashing and restarting the index process over and over"
problem that occured after I upgraded to SL.
They collected all of the crash dumps and after a week the report
that I got back was that there 'evidently' a problem with (at least) one
of my "user" files that was causing the mds crash.
There might be some truth to this...
I restarted the indexing with just the "System" directory and when indexing
was complete I added /Library waited, added /Applications waited, and then
Developer and waited for the indexing to finish...
I have two users Myself and Postgres.. the postgres account is only used for
compiling the postgresql database...
Adding the home directory for either of the two above users causes mds
to fail the error as logged in the system messages file looks like:
Oct 12 09:33:35 mbp mdworker32[2387]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Each of the directories contain thousands of files and many directories I cannot see how
to find the files that cause the crash.
I might add that I did not have this problem with Leopard.

This is the same UUID as before. My take on this problem is that Spotlight is trying to index some disk but something is wrong on that disk which makes it crash. As a first step we can try and figure out which disk is causing the problem. You can do this:
Open the terminal and type this command:
mount
This should give and output like this:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
This will give you a list of all the mounted filesystem. Start with the hfs volumes. The part after the on is what you need for the next step (/ in the first line in the output above and /net in the second line but the second one isn't hfs.) Now run this command:
diskutil info / | grep UUID
Replace the / with each line of the output that you get until you find which disk has the UUID in the console message.
(Sorry this is the only way I know how to find the disk for now.)
The next step would be to verify that disk through Disk Utility if there are any errors and lastly to locate the 'bad' file. I hope that you succeed with that.
Cheers.

  • Mds and mdworker are constantly using 10%-40% of my CPU since partitioning.

2 days ago I partitioned approximately 80GB of my 500GB 7200rpm macbook pro drive to be used for Windows 7. There was 430GB of free space on my HDD at the time so I know that there was no overwrite issue. It has successfully been installed and runs very well. However, since I did this the mds and mdsworker processes on the Mac side are constantly using large amounts of my CPU and are bogging down my computer. I understand that these services help create the Spotlight database. Is anyone aware of this issue?

After two days I'd say it's time to start over. Go to the System Preferences application- you can get to it by clicking on the Apple in the upper right corner, System Preferences is about a third of the way down the menu. When it's open, select Spotlight from the list of preferences. Under "Search Results" in Spotlight you will see the order in which results will be displayed. If you want to change the order, now would be a good time.
Uncheck all the boxes, this will remove them from the consideration of Spotlight. Then re-check the ones you wish to be available in Spotlight, this will force them to be re-indexed. My arithmetic says your files should occupy not much more than 50 GB, this should not take long to index.
You could try just Applications, or just System Preferences first to see if it is able to complete the task. If it takes longer than a few minutes, there's likely something else going on, perhaps related to your partitioning.
    Good luck! Joel.

  • Mds and WindowServer spinning

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro is very slow, and top is reporting that the apparent culprit is a combination of mds and WindowServer both contending for cpu.
I don't know how to solve the WindowServer problem, but I did follow the instructions on this web page for resetting mds:
    http://www.macintouch.com/tiger12.html
In the past 8 hours, while I was asleep, the combination of these two processes (including the restarted mds) logged 6:15 of CPU time between them.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing them to spin, and how I can get it to stop?
    Thanks,
    Brad
    17" Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Brad,
I had a similar problem. It seemed to me that mds (SpotLight) only got going because WindowServer had crashed and its log file was growing rapidly. SpotLight was trying to index it.
Anyway, my particular problem started when I set a revolving desktop background using about 8 photos in iPhoto. That's when WindowServer crashed. Apparently, System Prefs and iPhoto were both fighting for the desktop image. Anyway, I looked in ~/Library/Preferences and found the com.apple.desktop.plist preferences file. It indeed had two definitions for the "Background" value (aside from the default). I determined which was the static one I wanted and which was the iPhoto-created revolving one, and deleted the latter definition. After a reboot, I was good to go. A simple relaunch of the Finder may have sufficed.
I don't know if this is helpful since your WindowServer likely crashed (if that's what it did) for an entirely different reason, but maybe it'll inspire you.
    Good luck,
    Ben

  • MDS and mdworker processes gone wild

Ever since I upgraded to Lion on my Macbook Pro I am getting intermittant periods where the MDS and MDWORKER processes completely take over the CPU and all apparent activity for minutes at a time. It's now been a week, so I'm quite sure Spotlight is done indexing the drive. What are my options?

I'm having the same problem you are, and I'm exploring options.
First I noticed that Backblaze (backup service) was causing the problem, but I fixed that by including the /library/backblaze folder in Spotlight's privacy area. The complete lockup that was causing is now no longer a problem.
However, I'm noticing that most of the cycles are going to indexing my Time Machine backups, which Spotlight will not allow in the privacy area. It looks like it's indexing many of my old mailbox files from mail.app that are backed up on the Time Machine (Time Capsule) disk. I really don't see the logic to this. I've had the computer on and idling with full access to Time Machine for many days now and this is still going on, with MacBook Pro fans running at full gun and CPU not quite maxing out, but frolicking between 5% and 65% or so on a regular basis with no other apps present. Activity monitor doesn't show anything else hogging cycles -- it's all mds and mdworker.
Something isn't right with this. I hope that the next update from Apple will fix this, or someone on the intertubes will come up with a quick solution.
All the above is on a MacBook Pro (late 2008). I do note that I have a MacBook Air (late 2010) that backs up to the same Time Machine but does NOT have Backblaze installed. (I put everything important on the MacBook Pro.) This machine does not seem to have these problems. Both computers are running Lion and have much of the same software. Backups are doing fine on both machines.
My temporary solution is to turn OFF Time Machine on the MacBook Pro. This does seem to make things much better -- although even at 5% CPU use the fan runs somewhat higher revs than I was used to with Snow Leopard. I then run a manual Time Machine cycle just before I turn in for the night. When I'm back to using the machine again, I make sure the Time Capsule is not mounted. I'm backing up any working files continually to Backblaze still, as well as to Dropbox, so cutting the Time Machine frequency down to once or twice a day is not too bad for now. I do not want this to continue, however.
Also, I have done the following: Repaired disk permissions, reset the SMC and PRAM, and started the computer up in safe mode fully, and then restarted in regular mode.
If anyone has any possible fixes, I'm listening and thanks!

    Hi Gazpan,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend using the steps in this article to back up your iPhone if possible:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
You may also find this advice helpful for your situation:
What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you no longer have your iOS device
If you're using iCloud and Find My iPhone on the device, you can erase the device remotely and remove it from your account by signing in to icloud.com/find, selecting the device, and clicking Erase. When the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
If you're unable to complete either of the above steps, you should change your Apple ID password. Changing your password won't remove any personal information that is cached on the device, but it will make sure that the new owner can't delete your information from iCloud.
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

If the messages are stored on the device and you can power the device up you can use the application posted at https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/770529  , the application has a screen capture option and you can use the screen as a guide to install MyBackup from Market or a number of backup apps from Market and then you can run the applications and backup data to your SD Card to restore to the replacement device.

  • I have a 2006 15" Macbook Pro with a broken Superdrive and my external USB one just quit working

Why can my LG Portable Super Multi Drive (GP08NU6B) burn discs, but not read them? Right after I burn a DVD successfully, I stick it back in the drive and it says "The disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer"  I have a 2006 15" Macbook Pro with a broken Superdrive, and this external disk drive is the only optical drive that worked via USB.  This external drive was bought in 2010 and worked fine up until a month ago. This is supposed to be a Plug and Play device, and LG assures me the drivers are already included in Mac OSX,  yet it seems somehow my Macbook lost the drivers and it won't let me watch DVDs now or recognize any discs at all!
How can I find and somehow reinstall the firmware for this optical drive?

Sounds more like a hardware issue to me.

    Hi Linda Loo Loo,
If you have backed up previously to iTunes on a specific computer, even if it has been a while, you may be able to still backup even if you are unable enter the passcode on your iPhone due to a damaged screen. You may find the following article helpful:
If you have previously synced your device with iTunes, you may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device:
Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes asks you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer" section below.
If the device is still disabled, or if iTunes does not automatically sync your device, sync the device with iTunes.
When the backup and sync is complete, restore your device.
When iOS Setup Assistant asks to set up your device, choose "Restore from iTunes backup".
Select your device in iTunes and choose the most recent backup of your device.
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode

  • IPhoto 6 and Spotlight - the ANSWER

    Hi,
I had some problems with iPhoto 6 and Spotlight indexing. After reading tons of posts and not finding answers that worked, I ended up learning about Spotlight myself.
The solution is as simple as it is embarrassing (for Apple). They simply forgot to add to iPhoto the information to connect the Spotlight importer to the spotlight file of the photo library.
    The solution is here:
    http://blog.grischameyer.de/2008/09/iphoto-6-and-spotlight-fixed/
    Cheers

Sorry to hear that. I updated my blog and added a complete version of Info.plist that you can download.
    Try again, if you like.

  • Menu bar date and time is flashing and spotlight doesn't work

Help! My menu bar date and time in top right corner suddenly started flashing and Spotlight doesn't seem to work. It would normally appear just below the date and time. Is this a known issue? 10.4.7 on a 1 GHz G4 (eMac).
Any ideas - I tried restarting with no difference.

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Finder and Spotlight work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • How to copy a files name and spotlight comments to a text file for an entire folder

I have movie covers saved as a jpeg for every movie my family and I own. There is about 700 and they each have a comment of the main actors, release dates, and descriptions. This makes it easy to find what to watch. I want my parents to have all of this info but they have a windows laptop so the comments don't transfer with the file and can't be searched like you can on a mac. Is there an applescript, automator, program I can download,  or program code supported in xcode that will do at least one of the following things?
1)Take the name of the picture file and spotlight comment, copy and paste it into a text document like word that looks like this...
File Name1- Spotlight Comment for file 1
File Name 2- Spotlight Comment for file 2
. for all 700 files in a folder
    2) It would be equally helpful if there was something that would take the name of the picture file and spotlight comment, copy and paste it to a movie file's comments with the same name but obviously has different extention. For an example
    In a Pictures folder
Name: Dark Knight, The.jpeg       Comment: (2008) Genre: Action...             <- copy comment
    In a Movie Folder
Name: Dark Knight, The.m4v       Comment:                                               <- paste
and do this for all 700 files
    3) Is there a free photo program that works on mac and windows that I can put all my movie pictures in and have a description like I did with the comments? It would also need a place that to search the description for keywords. So Basically an itunes for pictures that works on both mac and windows. If so I still need a way to get the spotlight comments to the description.
    4) I feel like this would make things more difficult, but if not I can put all of the .m4v files in itunes so instead of pasting all the comments back into a file in finder paste them in a description in itunes
    5) At the very least a code that I can run one by one for every file that will paste the comments into the same document
Note: When I say spotlight comments I mean the comment box that is available when you click on get info of a file. The pictures are in the pictures section of finder in a folder called Movie Pictures. The movie files are on an external hard-drive in a file called Movies. Also I am slightly familiar with applescript and automater in that I have used both to create keyboard shortcuts and simple voice commands. I have programmed in c++ and C too. So If you give me a code for applescript I do know what to do with it.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all of this and extra thanks to anyone who tries to help.

Edit "PicDir" and "MovDir" to the location of your Folders
(Note: The comment is written to the m4v file using xattr, so the Spotlight comment field appears blank in Finder, but the comment metadata is still indexed by Spotlight (If you add a Spotlight comment from Finder, it is stored both as an extended attribute and in a .DS_Store file)
