BSOD leads to disk corruption and recovery options....

After getting a BSOD (IRQ less than or equal to) this morning, I can't even boot up the Windows installation media (Windows 8 PRO) to get to a command prompt!
After pressing any key to boot to the DVD (and the DVD spins, etc) and a few minutes it comes to a 'Recovery' screen with  "Your PC needs to be repaired"
Giving that it can't find winload.exe.  Well no kidding, there's a reason I booted from DVD after all.  I don't need you to tell me that.
Then it gives the gem that I'll need to use the recovery tools on my installation media.... Of course I BOOTED from the installation media...but that's beside the point.
Then I get to Enter to try again, or F8 to get to the menu to boot the OS.  It's as though the OS from the corrupt disk is overriding the Install media even though it's disabled as a boot device in the BIOS and the only boot device I have is the Blu-Ray
Drive.
MS, you REALLY need to fix this OS.  This is the 5th time I'm going to have take this disk to another PC, wipe it completely and start from scratch.  A BSOD I can get over.  The MASSIVE and I mean massive corruption that results from one on
the local disk is getting unacceptable.  I've used every version of your OS sing 3.1 and Windows NT 3.5 didn't even give me this much trouble.
Any suggestions on how I can at least get to the recovery tools on my install media?

Hi,
You can try this guide to download Windows 8.1 image:
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-iso/
Then, make a bootable USB to perform system repair.

  • After a disk crash and recovery disk reload, I'm left w/o address book. any suggestions for a recovery?

There is a discontinuity in time machine, I think it happened last week. I've used the recovery disk partition and time machine, as well as Super

Any suggestions?    BTW, as far as I know, the data for address book is still in the Library, it'"s only the app that's  Missing

Thanks for your reply John, but that didn't do the trick for me. I called Apple's professional audio support. Even though I didn't get the answer I wanted to hear, the support was awesome - the guy was very knowledgeable and helpful. Basically, the error I'm experiencing is a nasty one if it appears with pro apps like Logic. He indicated my only recourse was to re-install Logic. Since I'm on Logic 7, I figured if I have to re-install, might as well upgrade to Logic 8. I'm mid-project right now, so I'm pretty nervous doing that, but not much choice.

  • Data Corruption and Recovery Planning

I have two questions with regards to data file integrity and recovery as my office tries to plan out our FCS use. These are both hypothetical scenarios and also something people may already have experience with.
    1) Has anyone experienced data corruption within FCS and the assets stored on the server? Is anyone using checksum to manage and review file integrity and what is the best process to do so? If someone has faced issues with corruption in files, what are your responses to correct the issue?
-(we are using a drobo and backing up the catalog, but is this enough protection for the data 5+ years down the line? What are your suggestions for additional protection of files, specifically against file corruption issues, as even the server drives where the files are uploaded to on the drobo can eventually face file corruption?)
    2) Has anyone used FCS to catalogue assets and decided that they wish to use another program and if so, what was/is your method of exporting the files and metadata to the other program? Was it successful? How time consuming was the process and did you have to redevelop the metadata fields in the other program, or was the mapping process simple? Is an intermediary program useful to transfer files, and what program would that be?
    - Thank you in advance

1- None of my dozens of FCSvr clients have ever had data corruption, it's a non-issue for FCSvr.  It is an issue for hard drives and digital files in general, and is not a FCSvr issue.
2- Full asset and catalog backups on a daily basis are nessisary if you're using this for a business.  There are several solutions that work with FCSvr.
3- If you want to move assets to another database, you can export them from the FCSvr client app.  Or just copy the files from the Device they're stored on directly.  FCSvr saves metadata in the catalog database, so only what is stored nativly in each asset's file format will be readable by a diffrent file server solution.  None of my clients have left FCSvr, all are happy with it.

  • Solution for invalid directory item count, startup disk corruption and regular crashes

    Hi,
My late 2006 MacBook (10.6.8) has recently started crashing quite frequently. The screen becomes dark and a multi-language dialogue appears stating that the computer must be restarted with the power button. When this occurs any audio which was playing begins to repeat/skip and the computer goes into complete lockdown. This is now happening perhaps twice a day or more under moderate use.
This morning I ran 'Verify Disk' in Disk Utility and the process was stopped, stating that I had two 'Invalid directory item counts' and 'the volume Macintosh
HD was found to be corrupt'. Here is a screenshot of the Disk Utility window:
I have rebooted, run a software update and rerun the disk verification but to no avail. I also booted using CMD-S, advised by an older post in another forum which suggested using 'fsck -yf' which ran and stated that the disk had been repaired.
I bought the MacBook second hand from an Apple dealer but it didn't come with an install disc so I am unable to reboot and repair the disk like that.
My questions, therefore, are what does this mean for my computer in the future, will either of these issues cause me more trouble?
What can I do about it without the install disc
And are these issues directly related to the crashes? (I have been running the computer connected to an external drive and monitor - for watching movies)
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
    Twitch

Not much you can do without an install disc which can be purchased from Apple Store >  Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
    multi-language dialogue appears
That is referred to as a kernel panic. OS X: About kernel panics
Regardless of the kernel panics, you will still need the install disc to repair and reinstall OS X if necessary.
And are these issues directly related to the crashes? (I have been running the computer connected to an external drive and monitor - for watching movies)
Could be part of the problem.

  • Hard disk drives and recovery systems

I have a Hp Pavilion g4-1016dx system, I have ran the system check and get a quick check  Hard Disk 1 303 message. I realize my hard disk is going out, my system did not come with a recovery disk upon purchase. Is there any way of downloading the recovery system to disk or a USB drive from a different computer? Also, I was told the hard disk is not completely shot, I had just downloaded pictures and other items the day before the HDD failure, is there any way to salvage these myself without having to pay someone $$$ to recover these items?
Any help is greatly appreciated as I am technology challenged.
    Thanks

    Hi,
First, regarding your existing files, try the following.
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windo...
Another option would be to remove the HDD, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access your files.
    External HDD Caddy 2.5".
Secondly, regarding reinstalling Windows 7 on a replacement HDD, there are Two options available.
    1.  You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ).  They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
    2.  Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
Also, if possible, back-up the swsetup folder that can be found at the root of your C drive on your failing HDD.
You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook - this is listed as Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source ( Digital River ).
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.
    http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx
Regarding the drivers etc you need, if you were able to back-up the swsetup this will contain all the software and driver installers for your notebook - if you weren't able to, drivers and software you may need can also be found Here.

  • Microphoto freezing at logo, and recovery options don't w

Hey guys, a couple weeks ago in school I dropped my Zen photo and ever since then it'll freeze at the logo. The only way I can get the logo to go away is by plugging it in the wall, to charge it, then turn it on while it's charging. This brings me to the recovery screen. Whenever I select an option, it'll stay in the act of w/e option I selected indefinitely and its pissing me off. Any one with the same problem? How much is it to send my Creative in for repairs?

It's sort of like a computer when the hard dri've dies- you can get to the BIOS screen [the Zen/Recovery screen], but not much farther before it hangs. Dropping hard dri'ves is usually bad for them, unfortunately, it's probably damaged.
If running Disk Clean Up, Formatting & Reload Firmware don't work, the hard dri've is likely damaged by the fall.

  • Urgent!!!!!! Mac os  and recovery option not available in boot option

    Hello all,
I installed windows 8 pro in my Mac using boot camp. It worked fine. I made my boot priority to windows. Then one day I shrinked my windows partition drive to another drive. Then I extended back to normal. But when I restated my pc, it won't load to windows. And when I press the option key, only "windows"partition appear. No "Mac os " no "recovery" only "windows" option. I tried to open terminal using command+s but no luck how can I boot to Mac?
Waiting for it to be solved..
    Thanks

You can't do that, Re-Partition the drive, Shrink/Expand, or anything after you install Windows. you have FUBARed the complete system.
You'll need to boot to the Online Internet Recovery system. At startup hold down the Command+r keys until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen, have the system WIRED to your internet Router, Ethernet cable.
If the Command+r keys don't work try Command+Option/Alt+r keys. Again hold them down until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen.
Form that you will need to Re-Partition the drive as ONE (1) Partition and then reinstall Mac OS X. Once that is done then you will need to Reinstall Windows and then all your programs for both OSs and hopefully you have a backup of all your data files.'
Good Luck and Best Wishes. Happy Holiday and Happy Festivus for the rest of us.

  • Vista DVD and Recovery CD's

My father (aged in his 70's) has just purchased a Lenovo 3000 series desktop.  It seems a good machine but it was supplied with no Vista DVD.  I tried to create a Recovery disc for him, but when you follow the customer care help it tells you to go to a particular menu screen and select the Create Rescue & Recovery Disc option, however this menu option is not there and there is nothing that sounds like it will do this task in any of the sub-menu's.  So, the first questions is how do we create a recovery disc for the computer?
Secondly, I'm concerned about the absence of a Vista DVD.  What if, for example, his hard drive dies after the computer is out of warranty and he has to buy a new one?  How does he install his licensed copy of Vista on the replacement hard drive if he doesn't have the DVD?  I don't understand how you can purchase a license and not receive a copy of the software that goes with it.

There is no LenovoCare menu but there is a LenovoCare Tools option in the Welcome Centre.  Under that menu there is no option for "Create Recovery Media".  Under LenovoCare Tools there is a Data Protection and Recovery option, and under that there is a Rescue and Recovery option.  However even within the Rescue and Recovery option I can't find any option to create recovery media.  It has 3 sub-menus:  "Back up your system", "Restore your system", and "Manage settings".  None of these has any sub option to create recovery media.
I have all the screenshots but I cannot figure out how to display them here.
My other concern is that the PC was supplied without a Windows Vista disk.  I cannot see how to create a Windows Vista CD/DVD from the system, so my dad has a licensed copy of loaded but no actual copy of the installation disk.  How do we do this?  If the hard drive fails after the warranty period, how would my dad install Vista on his new HDD?

  • Issue with backup and recovery of WLS

I have installed WLS 10.3.6 in my 64-bit Linux box, now I am trying to take backup my server. I have a web-application deployed to my WLS, the path to my war file was something like:
    <home_dir>/install_files/myapp.war
Now to take backup I ran tar command on my current Linux box, now I copied the .tar files to my new Linux box and extracted it. When I am starting my weblogic server it is looking for the war file from the path <home_dir>/install/myapp.war which does not exist on my new machine. So I logged into Admin console of WLS on my new machine and trying to change the path for myapp.war by clikcing update button. But I am getting this error when I change the path:
weblogic.management.ManagementException: [Deployer:149007]New source location, '/u01/Oracle/install_files/myapp.war', cannot be deployed to configured application, 'myapp'. The application source is at '<home_dir>/myapp.war'. Changing the source location is not allowed for a previously attempted deployment. Try deploying without specifying the source.
Update operation failed - no deployments changed.
Please help me how to deploy my files. I'm expecting backup and recovery option should also take care of deployed files but it is not happening in my case, is that wrong?

  • ThinkVantage button startup behavior changes after Rescue and Recovery

I recently bought a Thinkpad X301 (2777-CTO). When booting my computer, I see the following message: "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button". Initially, when I press this ThinkVantage button on startup, I get a "Startup Interrupt Menu", pictured at http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4773/startupinterruptmenu.png
This menu is useful since it allows me to either enter the BIOS, start Rescue and Recovery, select a device to boot from, or simply start normally. However, after choosing the Rescue and Recovery option once, this menu no longer appears. Instead, it goes straight to Rescue and Recovery from there on without giving me the choice to enter the BIOS configuration or select a boot device.
I find this new behavior problematic for a few reasons:
    - The behavior of the ThinkVantage button at startup is inconsistent (a menu that should appear no longer does after running Rescue and Recovery once).
    - There appears to be no straight-forward way of reverting back to the desired (original) behavior.
    - The initial prompt on the power-on splash screen is now misleading. Although it still says "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button"; the way the button acts, it would probably be more accurate to say "To start Rescue and Recovery, press the blue ThinkVantage button" instead.
    - This behavior breaks the "Option Keys Display" option in the BIOS setup. Although I enabled this option, which should cause the system to display which key does what (e.g., F1 for BIOS), this is not displayed.
    - Running Rescue and Recovery results in a loss of functionality (instead of simply restoring the system to the initial state).
    - And anytime I press the blue ThinkVantage button (as instructed) instead of F1 or F12, I end up wasting several minutes, waiting for Rescue and Recovery to finish booting before I can properly shut it down and try again.
This problem appears to have existed for a long time (since 2008; http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/241845-thinkvantage-boot-menu-boots-straight-into-rescue-... ). However, the only "solution" that I have found is just a workaround: avoid pressing the ThinkVantage button (as instructed by the power-on splash screen).
The ideal solution would be to have a BIOS (or Rescue and Recovery) update which will prevent the ThinkVantage button from losing its original function after running Rescue and Recovery. I know that this is a minor bug, but this bug and another BIOS bug (in the network boot order menu, which I'll post after this one), which arose in less than a week after I received the computer, makes me question the ThinkPad's reputation for high-quality engineering.

  • Qosmio G10 and recovery disk - BSOD

    Hi
I have had my G10 for a few years now and its getting very slow so i thought i would re-install XP to get rid of all the rubbish.
So I put the product recovery disk in and formatted drive c and it did its stuff and seemed to re-install ok
When I re-booted i get the Qosmio boot up screen followed by a BSOD which is so fast I can't read.
I dont know what to do now?
    Any ideas would be appreciated
    Mike

    Hello,
the same problem appears here. Recovering a G10 from Toshiba media is followed by bluescreen of death. The claim seems not to be unjustified.
A boot with F8 and 'automatic restart turned of' shows an stop error 0x0000007B (0xF7C52528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) in the bluescreen.
Search for "0x0000007B (0xF7C52528" leads to:
    [http://ftp.toshiba.ca/support/techsupport/tsbs/all/-TSB001310/Updating_the_existing_Operating_System_with_Qosmio _Player.htm]
It didn't help at once, but is inspiring, isn't it.
Please try the cds you have got from Toshiba. Update Tool CD-ROM worked fine in my case.

  • Question Mark File, Holding Down Option/Alt, Cursor Appears But Usual Icons (HDD) and (Recovery Disk) Do Not

    Hello out there,
My Macbook Pro (coming on 2 years old now) recently had issues with starting up. I found on Apple's website the support forum which stated holding down alt while booting will allow you to choose either your HDD or a Recovery Disk. For the past few reboots I was able to do this, maybe over a 36 hour period (I always chose HDD.) Now, though, when I hold down alt and power on the notebook, only the cursor appears over a gray screen. No icons show up at all. When I press "N" the usual globe across a disk drive blinks. I've also tried to boot up holding down shift but to no avail.
I have a ton of documents that weren't backed up. If I throw in the OS X Leopard disc and reinstall from there, I know I'll lose all my data. Is there anyway Apple could find those files after the reset, or does the Drive just get wiped completely? What do you recommend I should do? Take it into Apple? I don't want to lose these files but I also don't want to pay Apple to do something I can do — put in the original disk and reinstall OS X.
Thanks so much! I owe you a beer! ^_^

Could be more than the power.  HDD could be old, or just the file system on the disk.
    Try ...
Get the external disk, self-powered, at least 2x the current disk
Boot the system from install disks (original) and prepare that disk as two partitions (GUID, with Journaled partitions)
Load the OS onto one of those partitions
Download CarbonCopyClone, and clone the current install disk to the second partition of that external
If the filesystem on the disk or the disk itself is too damaged, copy what you can
You would have a bootable system if nto Lion, with a copy of the data that is on the disk (hopefully).
This is my best advice to at least try to save your data without relying on the internal disk for file operations.  You may yet be SOL, but this is a darned good effort to avoid data loss.
And hope the repair bill does not cover so much that a new system is required.
