BT Fibre. TalkTalk Fibre, Sky Fibre...

At the moment I'm with BT Infinity I am getting a constant speed of 74Mb/s and 18Mb/s. Me and my friend were saying if you went to TalkTalk Fibre, Sky Fibre or Plusnet Fibre you would get exactly the same speed because its using BT's lines, is this right?

I could be wrong but I don't think it can be guaranteed you would get the same because I believe they us different kit at the exchange which may have an effect on your speed.

  • Switching from TalkTalk LLU to Sky LLU

My contract with TalkTalk is almost up and I'm thinking of switching to Sky. How soon would the switch happen?  Would I experience any downtime?  Could I bring my phone number? Also, could you check ADSL2+ (24mbps) is available through Sky on my exchange (Science Park Cambridge), as previously TalkTalk were the only provider offering this (BT providing only ADSL Max at 8mbps). Finally, is there any way of avoiding the router delivery fee?  I already have a perfectly good router configured how I like it, so the Sky one would just end up in a cupboard full of clutter (along with all the other routers I've been sent over the years).

According to Samknow's exchange checker the following are LLU'd at your exchange TalkTalk, C&W, Redcentric and Sky.
What speed are you getting with TalkTalk(as Sky should be able to offer the same)?
You should be able to bring your number but Sky offer no guarentee as to this, downtime will happen as your switched over to Sky's equipment at the exchange and it usually takes around 10 working days from the date of order(byt can be longer if Openreach are busy in your area).
Regarding the router i don't think there is any option to not receive one or for Sky to waive the delivery fee.

  • Switching from sky fibre

I am currently with sky fibre and just put an order in to switch to bt - does anybody know what is involved technically? do openreach actually have to change anything in the cabinets as it is actually the same product?
I also just noticed a fault on my system where the phoneline is very crackly when I pick it up and the Internet connection disconnects. When the phone is not active my broadband is very stable at 40meg. I had a fault fixed a couple of weeks ago but it is obviously not fixed fully, not sure whether to wait until I am back with bt in a fortnight to report it or do it while still with sky?

If your phone line is crackly you will not get the best connection with Infinity. If I were you I would have the phone fault fixed before doing anything.

  • Vodafone Sure Signal and SKY Fibre Optic Broadband

Please help, I have had no Mobile Phone signal for over 6 weeks on four mobile phones at home (which we pay over £150 a month for!) including my two teenage daughters phones who are beside themselves!!My Vodafone sure signal box was working fine (for past two years or more)but stopped working when we switched to SKY Fibre optic broadband from regular SKY broadband I have spoken to Vodafone and SKY for many many hours but still no signal. I'm tempted to ditch both SKY and Vodafone and start fresh with BT!!, this would be such a shame as been with both companies for over 15 years now I have no idea what I need to do to fix this, we have tried Port Forwarding but still no signal. Please help, I am in a mobile blackspot and its driving me cand the family mad.

Although not specifically about Sky Fibre, this (although a bit technical) is an interesting read (in particular the post at 21-Oct-14 10:41:23 advising to de-register the SS via the VF website, wait 30 mins then re-register the SS using a different postcode and if no luck contact VF and ask them to reset the SS from their end). For what it's worth, the Three Home Signal Box works fine over Sky Fibre without any port forwarding or any nonsense - just plug and go - worth knowing if you should decide to switch mobile providers!

  • Moving from Sky Fibre to BT Infinity

If I switch from Sky fibre to BT Infinity will I need to have an engineer visit or will it work like with normal broadband, just get a router and plug it in on activation date?

john46 - would that it were as simple as you say (I agree it should be).
I ordered a migration from a Plusnet Fibre trial to Infinity2 on 10 June - as from 27 June I have had working BT services BUT neither the 2 engineers who have been to my house nor the half-dozen BT call centre staff to whom I have spoken, nor anyone at the Correspondence Centre, nor the mods on this forum have been able to get the broadband activation completed - I am being expected to wait until 10 July!
Needless to say, despite Plusnet acknowledging the transfer, they are still billing me for both telephone and broadband as if nothing has happened.
I will be escalating my complaint tomorrow with Ofcom and my MP.

  • Apple TV library & mirroring problems with Sky fibre BB

Just moved broadband supplier to sky fibre. If we hard wire the apple TV we can see the library but cannot mirror. If we connect the apple TV wirelessly we can mirror but cannot see the library. Can you help please - as very fed-up now?

Solved now. After 10 days we could switch the router off and back on (the usual answer!) once we did this it all worked fine!

  • BT Infinity or TalkTalk Fibre Upgrade?

Hi, I'm currently with TalkTalk but my download speed is under 2Mbps and upload under 0.5Mbps due to attenuation of 60dB as I live over 4km from the exchange.  I can now upgrade for £25 + £10/month to fibre upto 40Mbps down/2Mbps up on TalkTalk I think at anytime (to be confirmed if I need to wait until end of contract or not) or I can wait and leave to BT or get BT Infinity on a new line for free at just over £40/month for unlimited upto 40Mbps/10Mbps.  Speed check gives me 24.6Mbps at my post code on BT/TT, 2Mbps upload on TT, 7Mbps upload on BT.
My question is as I do use aMule and torrents to transfer large files (Amiga, C64 collections, Fedora linux distribution, freeware etc.) as well as filesonic and rapidshare would moving to BT block me doing this?  A member on TT forums suggested BT was a no-no due to the heavy throttling employed and more congestion.
"TT normally has mutch less congestion on its backhaul network when compared to BT as it is only supporting TT customers and not other isps as well bt throttle torrents fairly heavily during peek times all week
TT`s throttling tends to vary from exchange to exchange but is reduced during the off peek times."
At the moment my torrents are downloading at 150kB/s and uploading 12kB/s (max speeds I set) but aMule hasn't been working properly for sometime, mostly at 0kB/s down / 12kB/s up.  I could live with the 150kB/s download (say 1200-1800kbps through the modem-router) still during peak times with BT but I've heard it is worse than this, closer to 0kbps then full speed after 12:30am.  Of course I can stay up until then and make sure my computer hasn't crashed so can download all night and check it 6am when I get up for work but I'd like at least a bit of speed the rest of the time.  Also are other traffic affected such as Youtube, iPlayer, Facebook, filesonic, rapidshare etc. during peak times?  The only problem I've got with TT is my downloads freeze and have to restart and videos keep rebuffering and unwatchable in anything higher than 320x240 resolution so no HD but that's the fault of my poor line I think.  The freezing problems occur on all my devices so it's not just a single computer, smart phone, games console or player.  I have tried several routers all with the same problem and only the Comtrend CT-5372 ADSL2+/VDSL2 router I use now is maintaining a connection 24/7 most of the time.
I have however heard many negatives about TalkTalk and that all ISPs throttle just the same.  So do BT throttle all the time or not and is it all weekend or just 3pm or 6pm to 12am Mon-Sun and is it a straight hard on/off 3MB/s down to 0kBs?
Also BT used to have a limit of 300GB transfer on Infinity, am I right this has been lifted or will I get a letter if I constantly download without counting how much I've transferred?  I expect I may use at least 300GB watching HD videos and downloading stuff as I don't do much else lol.  Would I be better off with the business package just in case?
    http://business.bt.com/broadband-and-internet/internet-access/fibre-broadband/
    It also states:
"No more slowing down in the afternoon, just when you need to work fastest. Our business prioritised service gives you a dedicated broadband fast lane with a guaranteed speed of 16Mb for business traffic at busiest times."
So does that mean no torrent throttling or is it just the same as the residential BT Infinity at a higher price?  Also what is the contention ration for business, is it 1:1 or 25:1 or so compared to 50:1 for residential?
Thanks if anyone can answer my questions and help me decide which provider to go with this year.
    Happy new year to all!

    jcampy wrote:
it is 25:1 ration but remember with fttc there can be un avoidable congestion from the cab to the exchange on very busy cabs but that rearly happens
also unless you go over your limit throttling is only applied on p2p packets same as TT
the limit of 300gb is still in force AFIK at least according to this post
    http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/BT-Infinity-Fair-Usage-Policy-Throttling/td-p/93273/page/2
also remember that bt also add uploads to your limit so you can use 300gb by uploading 250gb and downloadin 60gb
    Hi.
On Infinty option 2 there is no limit, the 300Gb limit was done away with months ago. it is UNLIMITED with only p2p torrents being throttled during peak hours and all weekend.
the link to the post mentioned is now over a year old.

  • Another Slow Sky Fibre BB.......but could it be....

.....sky capping my usage? I recently cancelled the tv part of my package as we did not watch it, mainly because ive got an android tv box with XBMC/KODI on which we stream tv shows and movies on. We can watch what we want, when we want with no bloody adverts etc.. When i phoned up to cancel the advisor said that the monthly usage was one of the highest they had seen, 400GB+ a month. Could sky have slowed down my usages speed because of this? Find it weird that last month and previous months i was getting 28-34Mbps, but since ive spokent o sky and cancelled my tv its now down to 15-17Mbps I use speedtest and also checked sky-maintenance (via router) and that speed says 17998 DownStream Connection Speed. Its been like that for 4 days now. I check it evryday. At work at the moemnt so i cannot do anything about it but maybe theres stuff i can do when i get home so any help would be appreciated.

Funny enough the same thing has happened to me.Although I'm not on fibre optic about 2 weeks ago my android box stopped working.I haven't had a problem since I bought the box in February.I even got another box to double check ,in case my original box was broken. Everything else streams in the house ok,apart from the boxes.Coincedence or what.?.My contract is up in November so I will be moving on.

  • Migrating away from Infinity to Sky fibre unlimite...

    Hello all,
BT Infinity has been pretty decent this past year, but with the price rises due in Jan, I'm strongly considering cancelling my service and moving to Sky for their Sky fibre package. I know all the fibre is managed by BT anyway, so there wont be any difference in service, and it's really more of a cost issue than a service issue. We will also be getting the HD TV package and phone bundle, and it all works out at a much better price than we are currently paying for each service separately.
Does anyone know exactly how the migration process from one FTTC ISP to another works? Is it a similar process to ADSL migrations, in which you're given a MAC code and a time period for cancellation? Or is it much more complicated to migrate on a fibre connection without a loss of service for a long period of time?
Any tips would be much appreciated.

you will only benefit from infinity2 if your infinity1 connection can max out the speeds, if you cannot get the max infinity1 speeds then that is the max your line can do, going to infinity2 will not make it faster as you have already reached the max your line can do

  • Upgrade from Sky Unlimted to Fibre Unlimited help please.

Hi everyone, as a former Virgin media fibre customer who moved house two months ago and decided to go with Sky at our new property, We initially decided to try Sky broadband unlimited and see if we were happy with the speed. After a couple of months we have decided to go for Sky fibre unlimited and placed the order two days ago at the weekend. Please forgive my ignorance here, but am I right in saying that unlike Virgin media, Sky fibre isn't installed by an engineer any more and that the fibre part of the installation goes to the green cabinet? Also I already have the black hub supplied when we took out broadband in May so will there be any change to the physical wired connection at the master phone socket? I wasn't expecting fibre being installed this way and it has thrown me a bit lolmany thanks Rich

You are right - the fibre conections that Sky and the vast majority of ISPs provide is FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) which means fibre to the green street cabinet, and the normal phone line form there to your home,. The black hub is fine for fibre

  • Switching from BT Infinity 2 Unlimited. Worth it? Is Sky Fibre Pro still available?

Hi all I'm currently on BT Infinity 2 Ulimited, but I've become less than satisfied with the speed on my line. I know the line is capable of around 60MB/s as that is what the tests were indicating when the engineer was round to install the service. However it has slowly deteriorated over time and now sits at just over 40MB/s. BT are beyond useless and will not accept that this is an issue, let alone try and fix it. Has anybody recently switched from BT Infinity to Sky Fibre? How is the upgrade process? And has this generally improved or worsened your speeds? Lastly, I can't for the life of me find this Sky Fibre Pro (up to 80MB/s) service on the Sky website anyway. Google results seem to take me to 404 pages. Is Pro still available, and if so where do I order it? If all Sky offer is an "up to" 38MB/s service, then I won't be switching. I have no desire to make my speeds worse still. Thanks a lot.Ryan

First thing to remember is that Sky Fibre will still use the same cabinets and cables to get to your house, so changing provider will not necessarily make any difference, although the physical moving of the cables may make things better, but may also make things worse.
Deterioration is an unfortunate side effect of more and more people using fibre and the crosstalk between cables.
Sky Fibre Pro is still available but you can't sign up online, only by calling Sky.

  • Xbmc issues using sky fibre?

I was on sky normal broadband and used the xbmc via box and pc but found watching some items at 1020p would cause issues, buffering.I moved to sky fibre and now find the films stream ok, but when i use the kodi to watch 3D films or other content these will now not load, but before was fine.Is fibre got any security issues with these sites or links.

It's very dependent on what time of the day you access the content because of the sites the host the material, the early evening to 10pm is the worst for buffering issues, even for those using hybrid fibre. Do ensure you are using the latest release of kodi, which is 14.2 and try the genesis addon, as that's rather a good addon and offers lots of sources for streaming to kodi. You can also tweak the buffers by adding settings to advancedsettings.xml, instructions for doing so can be found by sesrching on Google.

  • Disgusted with SKY FIBRE!

I have been told because my stats are 40/10 I cannot revert back to sky broadband unlimted this I thought about doing as the up and download speed on sky fibre after being brill for a month or so is now sooooo slow I cannot even use the on demand service from sky, sent them all my stats and download speed test etc told them its not a virus or operating system fault as I get the same poor rubbish service to my sky box also. It is beyond me that its my fault it really is.

please ignore my question, as soon as i posted it i found other threads providing the answer.
    Cheers, Neil

  • TalkTalk Fibre & Time Capsule

    Hi All
I fully appreciate this has been asked many times but after looks at all the threads I cannot work out what to do!
I have had TalkTalk Fibre installed and using the Huwai router that came with it. However, I would like a stronger signal as in WIFI I am getting a poor reception in many areas, so I can either:
    1. Use just the Time Capsule as my router
    2. Bridge my Time Capulse to mirror the TalkTalk and increase range (I believe?)
My main thing is which is best, and if its option 2, then how do I do it step by step as I have done a hard re-boot on the Time Capsule but just cannot get it to communicate with the TalkTalk router.
Also, will I still be able to use the hard drive on it at the same time
FInally, I have my TalkTalk router in the dining room, then have an ethernet cable from that to a ethernet box near my TV. This then has the Time Capsule plugged into it with 2 ethernets (1 to the LAN and 1 to the WAN).
Am I totally wrong in my set up or can someone give me a 'dummies' guide to set it up?
    Cheers!
    Michael

Hi LaPastenague, hopefully you can help
I have set up a TC with a talk talk huawei router as you state above.  However, I sometimes receive an error messgae on my IMAC stating that another device is using the IP address and that I should try and access the web again later or talk to the system adminstrator.
My set up is by using ethernet from the modem to the Huawei router and then ethernet to the TC WAN.  I am using a different wireless network name and password on the TC than is on the TalkTalk network.
I am having problems with my sonos music system losing access/connection to the TC server and so I am looking to resolve all the TC network issues before I can tackle the sonos issues and hopefullt one might resolve the other....

  • Sky Fibre - HELP! Very bad connection!

Hi, I have had Fibre for a number of months now after getting no use out of Broadband as my property is new build the connection was shocking, so was left with no option but to upgrade in the hope of improvement....but this was not so, it has NEVER functioned at the 40mb promised, and at the moment my my sky hub settings at showing at 25mb, carried out a online broadband speed test and i am actually receiving 2mb.... i have contacted sky to be talked through the whole changing channel settings etc to no prevail! i cannot even stream a video it is that slow... please can someone release me from this snails pace broadband?!!! Thanks!!

    Thanks for the stats.
Your line looks like its either capped or simply wont accept higher speeds than 25mbps(this could be due to poor quality copper from the cabinet, bridgetaps on the line or aluminium).
My line attenuation is 24.2 on what is known to be an impacted line and i get 35mbps.
Have a look on the BT Wholesale ADLS checker (it gives fibre speeds aswell)enter your address details and see what speeds it gives you(it will give you a maximum and minimum for both clean and impacted lines).
