[BUG] Exporting to xls and xlsx produces empty file

When I'm viewing a table with data, and in Actions choose "Export...", turn off "Export DDL", choose "xls" for format, everything else is on default, and either leave empty or enter same name for both Query and Data worksheet names, and specify filter query - export produces empty xls/xlsx file. Only when one explicitly enters different worksheet names does valid non-empty excel workbook get generated with two differently named worksheets.
Either validation should be added for worksheet names, or generating them automatically on export should be supported.
I'm using Oracle SQL Developer 3.1.07.
Kind regards,
Stevo.

Hi Stevo,
Really appreciate you reporting this. There was an earlier, somewhat similar thread on this issue that we blamed on export file size:
Sql Developer 3.1 - Exporting a result set in xls generates and empty file
But you have discovered an important variation that explains it for small export file sizes also. Here is what I verified on 3.1.07.42:
1. Normally if the worksheet names are left untouched (empty), then the names default to Export Worksheet and SQL
2. If the name settings in Tools|Preferences|Database|Utilities|Export|Excel Format are null (empty), there is no problem
3. If the name settings are intentionally changed to a single blank character, then the problem you describe occurs.
So, you may wish to go to the preference settings and intentionally Backspace over each to null it out, then click OK.
In the case of intentionally setting both worksheet names, data and query, to the same non-null value, that is also a problem.

Gary

  • Unable to open .xls and .xlsx files from windows explorer or from Microsoft outlook using MS Office 2007

    When I double click on an .xls or .xlsx file Excel will open up, but I never see the file open up.
    If I right click on the excel file and say open with excel I then get the following error:
    "Windows cannot find file c:\test\test.xls.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again...."
    Everywhere I looked seems to indicate the file associations was messed up so per a technical document I deleted the .xls and .xlsx association and then ran the Office 2007 repair and rebooted.  Still not working even after office puts the .xls and .xlsx
    file associations in.
    Here is what I see the in .xls and .xlsx for the &Open action:
    Application: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e
    UseDDE: Checked
    DDE Message: [open("%1")]
    Any guidance would be appreciated!

    In the ened I had to go into Excel Options, Advanced, General, and uncheck the "ignore other applicaitons....".  BUT this only worked after doing the Office 2007 repair.

    When using the {module_webapps} tag, the filters "lastclassified" and "randomclassified" producing empty collections. "all" and "lastest" are working OK.

    I may be doing something wrong because looking at the "Purchased" in iBooks I only see all the books that I actually purchased, none of the iBooks that I created in iBooks Author shows up. I can re-download all the iBooks I've purchased and some in iCouds, but the ones I've created  in iBooks Author are no where to be found.

  • Sender FCC with unbounded RecordSet Structure produces Empty File

    Hi Experts,
    My scenario is File (FTP) to IDoc, using FCC on the sender.
    The source file is a flat file representation of the IDoc e.g. with the segment names preceeding each record row.
    FCC parameters are as follows:
    RecordSet Name: Z1RECORDSETNAME
    RecordSet Structure: EDI_DC,1,E1TPDLH,1,Z1TPI2H,1,E1TPACC,E1TPTRM,,E1EDT13,,E1TPDIH,1,Z1TPI2HD,1,E1TPNOT,*
    RecordSet Sequence: Variable OR Ascending
    .fieldFixedLengths
    .fieldNames
    .keyFieldValue
    .endSeparator
    .keyFieldInStructure
    above parameters are used in all segments, except in E1TPNOT where ignoreRecordsetName is added
    My issue is when the test file contains more than 1 value for the unbounded segments E1TPTRM, E1EDT13 (e.g.  3 row values for E1TPTRM and 2 row values for E1EDT13) the Content Conversion succesfully finishes but produces an Empty File (size = 0)
    Does anyone know how to fix this issue?  Am i missing something in the parameters to be able to support the current file structure?
    Kindly share your ideas/solution
    I've tried to edit the test file to have only 1 record value for the unbounded segments and it is succesfull and does not produce an empty file.

    Try giving
    EDI_DC,1,E1TPDLH,1,Z1TPI2H,1,E1TPACC,E1TPTRM, * ,E1EDT13, * ,E1TPDIH,1,Z1TPI2HD,1,E1TPNOT,*
    I got it, i guess even you have given the astrix after E1TPTRM and E1EDT13 and it changed to bold.
    Ok ignore my answer.

  • Export to Excel and Save as Static File

    Hello all,
    When I export to excel from SharePoint 2013, and save the file, the data remains dynamic in that if I update the list in SharePoint it will update the data in Excel. This is great and I use it in a few places, but I also need to capture a point in time and
    save the exported Excel file as static data (i.e. Export to Excel, and Save as the Q3 Report). How can I save the file as static/remove the dynamic link so I just have the data at the time of export?
    Thanks!
    K.
    Personal Blog: http://thebitsthatbyte.com

    Hi Kelly,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to export to excel as a static file.
    In SharePoint, when you export list to excel, it works as a one-way sync. It can sync data from SharePoint to Excel. If you don’t want to sync the data from SharePoint, you can copy the data from the exported excel file to a new excel, then save the new
    excel file.

  • FYI TDMS open and read on empty file gives no error's out

    I found that if you 'open' an empty (0 byte) file using TDMS open, you will not get any error messages when you open it, nor when you call functions such as "Get properties" or "List content", also no error when you close the TDMS file.
    If the file is non-empty, but not a valid TDMS file, TDMS open returns an error.
    I would have expected that I would get an error or a warning at least when trying to read a non-existant property or group, if not by the open function itself?!
    The 2013 snippet below creates a 1-byte or empty file in the local user temporary folder, closes the file, then attempts to open and read it as a TDMS file.  The temporary file is deleted afterwards.
    If the file is empty, NO errors or warnings occur at any point.  If the file is not empty, it fails on the TDMS open. (Note the sequence structure is because the path out of the tdms close is invalid if the tdms open failed.
    This could conceivably cause an issue if your program does not do additional fault checking to catch existing but empty files.  (Which of course shouldn't ever happen, but in some situations it could happen.)

    CLD LabVIEW 7.1 to 2013

    Hooovahh
    I asked to list the channels in a named group.  If that named group did not exist, I would think that should at least be a warning,  but I could see how it should not be an error, it was just unexpected to me that reading a non existant group (in an empty file) did not indicate any issues at all.   To me, 'error out' should give a warning or an error if something unexpected happened, but I may just have stricter opinion on something that by nature is very philosophical and open for debate. (And there are always tradeoffs, overt checks and bounds in a function obviously leads to overhead, and TDMS is optimized for performance, so that may be one reason it is the way it is.)
    (This situation came up for me because when a file is first created, we datetime tag it and write a bunch of other meta-data to the file, then later (and over time) we add the spectrum goup + data.  [Edit] actually, in the old code, if the file existed, it was assumed to have been setup correctly. so if the group exists, the old code assumed all the meta data has already been written [end edit].. One of the many fixes possible, I'll rely on the 'found' boolean output of the parameter read instead of relying on the error/warning. If the datetime tag is found, the code will asume the file exists and has been filled with the meta data I expect.)
    Thoult ::  I wasn't sure, but in either case, my intent was to provide extra information, not 'knock you' for participating in the discussion, I hope thats not how I came accross.  English is a second language to me, so I sometimes come across 'wrong' from what I mean.

  • Add the ability to use .xls and .xlsx files for Data Merge

    Who wouldn't like that?!

    Me! Me!
    Or rather: I think the big empty part of Data Merge right now is its inability to handle XML input. Much as I detest XML, it seems like a lot of people would really like that to happen, it does appear to be a Web 2.0 -type technology that it's easy to get the InDesign Marketing team excited about.
    It's easy enough to convert XLS/XLSX into CSV (or XML), so I think improving XML would be a better use of scarce resources...
    (I can't believe I'm tossing out a vote in favor of XML. Kill me now!)

  • Using NPOI to open both XLS and XLSX for reading

    I am having an issue opening an Excel 2007 (xls) Workbook.  I receive the following error:
    The supplied data appears to be in the Office 2007+ XML. You are calling the part of POI that deals with OLE2 Office Documents. You need to call a different part of POI to process this data (eg XSSF instead of HSSF)
    My code for reading xls file is:
    // Workbook object
    HSSFWorkbook hssfworkbook;
    // create workbook object using file stream
    using (FileStream file = new FileStream(path, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read))
    hssfworkbook = new HSSFWorkbook(file);
      Please tell me the solution for above issue.
    Thank you.

    Hi Vani d,
    I am afraid that NPOI is third-party dll. This is out of our support. So i will move to off-topic forum.
    But here are some useful info as below
    Please note the following code, When opening a workbook,  a .xls using HSSFWorkbook,  a .xlsx using   XSSFWorkbook. Please refer to
    http://poi.apache.org/spreadsheet/quick-guide.html for more information.
    Workbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook();
    FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream("workbook.xls");
    wb.write(fileOut);
    fileOut.close();
    Workbook wb = new XSSFWorkbook();
    FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream("workbook.xlsx");
    wb.write(fileOut);
    fileOut.close();
    Have a nice day!

  • Export to Excel from Reports produces corrupt file format

    Whenever I choose to export to excel results of custom reports I am unable to open the file as I am told the file format is corrupt. The contents show as containing xml data and even changing the extension from xls to xml does not get me anywhere.
    If I save the report and then download I am still informed the file format does not match the extension but the fie will open in Excel.

    Hi,
    Please raise a ticket or provide the URL if the issue is still there.

  • IPhoto or Final Cut bug: export creates 19 stereo tracks attached to file!

    I am exporting three slideshows from iPhoto '08 to Quicktime to be placed in a Final Cut Pro project. The first two exported fine. The longest one (just over ten minutes) exports and plays in QuickTime, but when you import to Final Cut, it mysterious has 19 stereo tracks attached, and won't play unless you remove all of those tracks (hence, no music) Again, the shorter two come in just fine with one stereo pair, as you would expect.
    I installed the iPhoto update, tried again, still the same thing...

    Is it just that one particular slideshow or will any slideshow exported and imported to FCP display that problem? Also, if you have Quicktime Pro, open the problem file with it and check to see if if contains those 19 tracks. If not, then maybe FCP is causing the issue.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Bulk Export Package Spec and Body as single file

    Is there a way to bulk export the package spec and body into a single file, you can export spec and body if you choose each individual proc/package but if you just choose the spec/body individually from the connection - > packages list it only exports that part of the code. If not i will raise as an enhancement.
    Thanks
    Trotty

    Thanks for your update K.
    Have tried that and you can sort of do it however you still have to choose/select the spec/body individually so twice the overhead selescting them.
    Will raise an enhancement and see where it goes.
    Thanks

  • IMovie saves and reloads an empty file

    I am using iMovie 6.0.4 (267.4) on my G4 DP 1.25 GHz, 2 GB RAM. When i save my 12 GB iMovie to another drive in my G4, iMovie reloads the movie that was just saved and closes the original. The reloaded version is empty sometimes. How can the reloading step be prevented? I have the same version of iMovie on a 2nd drive and the "about iMove" has the same version numbers yet it thinks the other version is older and gives warning messages of "the file was made with an older version and that the saved iMovie may not be readable with the older iMovie edition." The original 12 GB iMovie file can be saved OK but, when saved as, the original 12 GB file is closed and an empty 8 MB iMovie is loaded with no data sometimes. My two drives with iMovie on each are mirror drives yet iMovie thinks hey are different. I work on the same file on the 2 mirror drives and jump back and forth. The originally saved iMovie file is OK. My system gets a regular DiskWarrior treatment but that doesn't stop iMovie from reloading an empty iMovie when I save the project with the save as option. iMovie prefs has no way to stop the reloading function. Thanks for your help.

    I am using iMovie 6.0.4 (267.4) on my G4 DP 1.25 GHz, 2 GB RAM. Now when i save my 12 GB iMovie to another drive in my G4, iMovie reloads the movie that was just saved and closes the original. The reloaded 8.4 MBversion is empty. How can the reloading step be prevented?
    I tried saving as, and iMovie takes about 11 minutes to save. iMovie then loads an empty 8.4 MB iMovie file. I repaired permissions and tried to save again getting the same results of loading an empty iMovie file with the same name as the saved file. I close this file and don't save.

  • Exporting a sequence and getting an Error file too big message

    I have tried to export a sequence using Quicktime conversion. It is a two minute clip and I keep getting an "Error, File too big" message. Does anyone know what can be happening?

    What exactly are you exporting to? Settings, codec, data rate? What drive are you exporting to? How is it formatted?
