Buggy pkgrm in Solaris 10

Maybe out of topic, but I had this problem when trying to remove a pkg from a Zone. So I tried the same command in the global zone, and It had the same effect.
We just had a Package named "wd" working on Solaris 7,8 and 9. It istalled nicely on 10, but when I made a pkgrm wd, the result was a little unexpected:
Among a lot of files also these ones go removed:
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/profile
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/lockstat
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/fbt
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/fasttrap
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/dtrace
/kernel/drv/sparcv9/dcam1394
/kernel/drv/sparcv9 <non-empty directory not removed>
/kernel/drv/sdt.conf
/kernel/drv/profile.conf
/kernel/drv/lockstat.conf
/kernel/drv/fbt.conf
/kernel/drv/fasttrap.conf
/kernel/drv/dtrace.conf
/kernel/drv <non-empty directory not removed>
/kernel <non-empty directory not removed>
/etc/rcS.d/K10dtlogin
/etc/rcS.d <non-empty directory not removed>
/etc/rc3.d <non-empty directory not removed>
/etc/rc2.d/S99dtlogin
/etc/rc2.d/S89bdconfig
/etc/rc2.d <non-empty directory not removed>
/etc/rc1.d/K10dtlogin
/etc/rc1.d <non-empty directory not removed>
/etc/rc0.d/K10dtlogin
I suppose that there is a Bug in pkgrm, since also part of SUNWdhcsr got removed:
I think that should be easy to reproduce. You just need to dreate a pkg called wd, and try to install and deinstall it on Solaris 10.

Sorry for not beeing so precise. I do not know how to file a bug report, because I have Solaris Express for non commercial use. If you let me know how, I could file a bug repport:
I have this problem with Solaris 10 beta 51 and 54. The Version I use now, which also has the Bug is:
cat /etc/release
Solaris 10 s10_54 SPARC
Copyright 2004 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
Assembled 01 March 2004
I have also a problem with mountall in Zones, which is probably also a Bug. Where should I report this one?

  • Solaris INTEL Binaries Re-Download

    Hello! dear Sun Support:
I have a problem (naah! classic). I was downloading the binaries of solaris for intel (the laaarge files) and, i left the files downloading by itself*s, when i get back to review, the computer was completly frozen (WINDOWS crahing??? Unbelievable!! ha! You see? NOW that's what im going to change my buggy plataform for solaris!!!) When I restarted, the files weren't there nor in the internet's cache. I want to Download the files but, the site detected and marked the files as "Downloaded". I need to download again but the option doesn't appear. Can you help me? for i need to download the next files again:
    *     Download Solaris 8 1/01 Installation CD ( 327.29 MB )--THIS ONE STILL APPEARS
    *     Solaris 8 1/01 Software 1 of 2 CD ( 313.20 MB ) has already been downloaded via Main component.
    *     Solaris 8 1/01 Software 2 of 2 CD ( 138.55 MB ) has already been downloaded via Main component.
Than you so much for your kind help
    Best Regards

Solaris 8 download for Intel has not been available for 3 months, only SPARC, so I'm not sure what you are downloading. You can purchase the media kit from:

  • Multicast address inside a solaris zone buggy ?

I need to post to a multicast address from within a solaris 10 (06.06) zone but the routing is abnormal:
    On the global:
    224.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 172.16.248.42 e1000g0 1500* 0 1 U 0 0
    Inside the zone:
    224.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 172.16.0.60 e1000g32001:1 1500* 0 1 U 0 0
As you can see the route is attached to a different interface which is strange cause the zone also inherit an access to e1000g0:
Any ideas cause the only solution I know is to change the multicast route but this is not possible inside a zone ...
    route -n delete -interface 224.0/4 -gateway 172.16.0.60
delete net 224.0/4: gateway 172.16.0.60: insufficient privileges ....
    Thanks

The zone attach the multicast to the 1st interface, which means for a zone:
I've changed the order in /etc/zones/myzone.xml
    <network address="172.16.248.86" physical="e1000g0"/>
    <network address="172.16.0.61" physical="e1000g32001"/>
    <network address="172.16.244.86" physical="e1000g244001"/>
Now the route for the multicast is bounded to the correct interface:
    224.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 172.16.248.43 e1000g0 1500* 0 1 U 0 0
    As the global zone.

  • Xmx over 3G for a server app on x86 Solaris is buggy for 32bit app jre15?

    Hi folks,
I am sorry for the cross-list, but a bit desperate for feedback.
One of my colleagues says that he thinks the Xmx=3000MB (but less than 4Gig) is buggy for a server side application.
I have searched the bug tracker and the forums and I can't find any reference to this.
Does anyone know if the server side applications can misbehave given such high memory parameter if being run in 32 bit mode ?
My server app start up parameters are:
    -server
    ${MIN_MEMORY:+-Xms$MIN_MEMORY}
    ${MAX_MEMORY:+-Xmx$MAX_MEMORY}
    -Xloggc:${LOG_DIR}/gc.log
    -XX:+PrintGCDetails
    -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
    where both MIN_MEMORY and MAX_MEMORY = 2500MB
    using:
    Java 1.5.0_09
    on a
    SunOS 5.10 Generic_120012-14 i86pc i386 i86pc
    Please provide any feedback.

  • New to solaris what should I be downloading solaris 10 or opensolaris?

well I have some experience with redhat but want to learn solaris as, well I really will never be able to get a linux/unix position if I only know one. hmm so I started looking around and got confused by the many versions now available of solaris. so after bout an hour is seems like...
    1) the solaris 10 os is released for free
    2) there are multiple solaris's based off this code but the one solaris is pushing is the opensolaris 2008.05.
in my mind I figure that solaris loosely relates to redhat then and opensolaris loosely relates to fedora.
    so here are my questions.
I see solaris is "free" but I can't figure out exactly what that means. I know for instance that me sitting at home at night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun? also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. I really don't want to waist time downloading and installing this if regular old solaris 10 is the better option. thanks you much for helping a newbie out. I have a seconds pc waiting for this and remember it is basically so I can get up to speed so my solaris unix will be on par with my quite limited linux experience. thanks again...

I see so>night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun?Depends. With Solaris you can use the Solaris Companion CD to get a few of the more generic programs or you can use sites such as Blastwave, SunFreeWare, Package Archive etc... to add more software of you can always compile from source.
OpenSolaris has a pkg install command which is analogous to yum and contains a lot more software then the Solaris Companion CD. If you hunt around you can get a list of all software that pkg install can install to your system.
also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I Plop in the DVD and hit "upgrade" or you can do fancy things like live upgrade if you plan in advance.
guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software. Patches that aren't labeled as critical or security, phone support, etc... are not part of "free" Solaris.
secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. There is a device detection tool that can be used for either OS so you can see in advance if your hardware is probably supported. OpenSolaris contains programs that are generally more current then those that are offered by Solaris.

  • Jds3 in solaris 10 x86 broken

Hi, i am a novice to unix and have been trying to learn solaris for some time now. I finally have a system that will allow me to install the os with minimum headaches. The problem i have been experiencing is that when i install kde OR SUN GNOME, something related to it causes jds to brake. I get a black background when i log in to jds and can only use some applications. if i try to change the background through the jds tool it crashes. can someone advise me what may be affecting gnome and how to fix it please. (JDS WORKS FINE IF KDE AND ITS DEPENDANCIES NOT INSTALLED)
    my system specs:
    AMD 3000+ PROC
    ASUS A7N8XE-DELUXE MB
    1.5 GIG RAM
    80 GIG HD
    256 MB ATI VID CARD
    PINNACLE CAPTURE CARD
2 PROMISE PCI CONTROLLER CARDS(4 80 GIG HD ATTACHED)

I apologize, someone usually responds on this forum
within a day or two, and I'm currently working on
newer opensolaris releases and one of the older linux
based JDS releases, so your combination of JDS3
Solaris with KDE wasn't easily to replicate without
wiping a system that I'm using for something else.
In the future I would suggest that you post such
questions to one of the opensolaris forums:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=39
    start=0
Here is a thread on installing KDE from blastwave:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=
    26374B
If you think this combination of JDS3 and KDE would
be useful to others, I'd appreciate if you could post
your solution. Even "newbies" can contribute.nitz thank you for responding, it has been frustrating trying to get this beast up and running. First i had resolved the problem by cleanining up my /etc/profile file as there were duplicate path statements and statements in incorrect order, caused by me following stuff i got over the internet and not realizing that solaris puts some of those statements automatically into env path. This was working fine until i had to reinstall thus mu handle REINSTALLED :-)
    because i forgot to create a hard link between /usr and /opt/csw which my soft link got trashed. now after reinstalling the OS and programs from blastwave the black background is back in JDS. any help or suggestions will be appreciated. on another note i have been able to fix the sig 11 error associated with kde as follows;
*make sure /opt/csw/kde-gcc/bin and /opt/csw/bin is at the end of the path list, because the compilier was interfering with the css compilier.
also do not install qt from blastwave as kde also has its own qt files built in. when i installed qt for use with another program i get the sig 11 error and kde will not login or work properly, but when i just pkgrm /opt/CSWqt , everything worked normal again.
    Thanks again for responding.

  • Jds-help and Solaris Management Console compatible with jdk6u1?

    Hello,
I am running Sol 10 11/06 for sparc on a Sun Blade. I just upgraded to jdk6u1 from jdk5. I installed all required j6 packages, and then installed patches for j6u1. I then used pkgrm to remove all jdk5-related packages (I searched for all packages starting with SUNWj5 and then removed them). Java seems to be working fine.
Now, my Desktop Overview and other java-related help functions do not work. I get this error:
    # jds-help ghelp:jdsoverview
** (jdshelp:826): WARNING **: An exception occured 'Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0''
A large jre error log is produced that mentions a problem with JVM:
    # An unexpected error has been detected by Java Runtime Environment:
    # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0xfc94dd6c, pid=1338, tid=1
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.6.0_01-b06 mixed mode, sharing)
    # Problematic frame:
    # V [libjvm.so+0x14dd6c]
Solaris Management Console does not work either, and gives an error that no suitable java 2 version is installed in /usr/java.
Maybe I removed a j5 package I shouldn't have. Which j5 packages are related to the operation of jds-help? Any ideas as to what is causing my problem with jds-help and smc?
Does anyone know FOR SURE that jdshelp and smc are compatible with jdk6u1?
    Thank you...

I got rid of jdk6 and re-installed 1.5.0.11. Solaris Management Console 2.1 works again, so it appears as if smc and Sun Studio 11 are both INCOMPATIBLE with jdk/jre6.
jds-help still does not work, with a jvm error, so perhaps it is also incompatible with jdk/jre 1.5.0.10+.

  • Package name in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I try to uninstall the following path:
    /usr/spool/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic
for all the printer model files.
Is there a Solaris 10 Package name associate with these files that I can use pkgrm to do?
    Thanks!

You can get the associated package name by running:
    grep lp\/model\/ppd\/system\/foomatic /var/sadm/install/contents | awk '{ print $10 }' | sort -u

  • Installation for Solaris 10

Greetings all...I'm not sure where this is supposed to go so I figured I'll start here since I technically am new to java, hehe... New meaning new to the Solaris installation of Java, specifically in regards to downgrading the JDK/JRE from 1.5.0 (latest as of the 6/06 release of Solaris 10) to 1.4.2_12.
    More detail:
We have four T1000s and four T2000s, all with Solaris 10 6/06 installed. Apparently, the latest 1.5.0 release of java is installed and used by default (java -fullversion shows 1.5.0_06-b05). JRE 1.4.2_11 is also installed but since then, 1.4.2_12 has come out and the developers that are going to be on this machine absolutely demand 1.4.2_12.
For those familiar with Solaris and pkgadd/pkginfo/pkgrm, I'm looking to A: remove 1.4.2_11 and 1.5.0_06 and B: put in 1.4.2_12. I've done both the self-extracting .sh script as well as the packages but when I run that version of java, it comes back with the following error:
Error occurred during initialization of VM
    java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
I've looked everywhere I can think of to fix this but I'm at a loss now. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure what PATH variable I'm supposed to have. Thanks in advance!

  • Also I need ndiswrapper support for solaris 10

I have a linksys -G type router and my computer uses a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster
which works in Linux like mandrake , debian systems like knoppix and kanotix but their are some buggy like debian also that don't let me change the essid in debian but most linux works with the drivers for my card which are
    04/13/2004 10:01 AM 7,870 BCM43XX.CAT
    03/31/2004 08:44 AM 11,960 BCMWL5.INF
    02/19/2004 11:51 AM 300,928 BCMWL5.SYS
normally you install the drivers with ndiswrapper -i BCMWL5.INF then use -m to add it too the model loader program in linux which adds wlan0 to ifconfig and iwconfig programs
which also ndiswrapper requires the source code of the kernel to install the ndiswrapper right , it req. it too compile the drivers, and using the linux gui programs to setup essid and key wep info
also I use a script in kanotix to use /etc/network/interfaces to load the info on bootup etc.. to get my wireless network card up in linux.
also how the support for soundblaster sound cards in solaris 10, I have not fingured out if theirs sound yet. freebsd 5.4 seemed to be missing the sound support
one more thing in bootup of the install program for Solaris 10 my geforce 6800 card detected right but my tv output was all wrong in since the picture , was only on the monitor and tv had stange graphics on it which did not look right I hope nvidia drivers fix this problem , Is their any different command needed for clone mode in Solaris 10 then free86 nd xorg scripts use?

I got the solutiion from Canon Customer Serivce, temporary until the 10.10 download is released.  It works:
"You can download the latest software updates at this address:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/professional/professional_cameras/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_...
Please select "OS X Mavericks v10.9" using the drop-down menu on the page.  You have to pick the previous version of Mac OS, because the options for OS X 10.10 Yosemite have not yet been populated.  I sincerely apologize for any confusion this may cause.  After selecting OS X 10.9, please click on the red triangle next to the word "Software" to see the software updates available for your computer.  I would recommend updating all of your software including EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional."
I never did find the drop-down menu, but I went into the site map and found what I needed.

  • JDK 1.2.2_007 install on Solaris 8

    Hi,
This isn't a programming question but more of a setup issue and I hope it is not to far off topic for this form.
I'm responsible for testing a Java app and need to go as far back as JDK 122_07 for my testing. The box I use is an Ultra 5 running Solaris 8. When I install the JDK for 122_07 and put it in the path, I'm still getting 1.2.2_005 (the default installtion) when I do a java -fullversion. I have updated the path in /etc/profile and /etc/default/login. When I do an #echo $PATH I see /usr/jdk122_07:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:. I could take off 122_05 but it breaks other stuff. See next question.
When I run pkgrm to take off SUNWj2rt there are about 8 other package dependencies. The primary concern is SUNWdtnsc which is needed for Netscape.
Even when I go into /usr/jdk122_07 and type java -fullversion I get back the 122_05 result. Looking at java in the dir I see it is linked to java_wrapper? What is that all about?
    Thanks for any nuggets.
    Gary

Thanks Ada. This is a new install so I'll have to look at some other cause. Thanks for the reply.

  • Solaris 10 [11/06]: Second CPU not accessible using psradm / psrinfo / ...

    Hi all,
Some months ago I've build up a small Server for some home projects with Solaris 10 x86 11/06. All things are running fine but Solaris does not use the second CPU that is installed.
I have a FSC D1306 server board from an old Primergy P200 server.
First, I saw that my system only uses one CPU:
    # psrinfo
0       on-line   since 10/04/2007 20:13:27I then checked, if the system recognizes the second processor socket at all:
    # prtdiag
    System Configuration: FUJITSU SIEMENS D1306
BIOS Configuration: FUJITSU SIEMENS // Phoenix Technologies Ltd. 4.06  Rev. 1.05.1306             12/12/2003
    ==== Processor Sockets ====================================
    Version                          Location Tag
    Pentium(R) III                   CPU 0
    Pentium(R) III                   CPU 1
[ . . . ]After that I wanted to see, if the second processor has been detected properly by the BIOS:
    # smbios -t SMB_TYPE_PROCESSOR

Can anyone help me enabling the second CPU? I would like to use it because I have some applications that would run much better on two CPU's rather than one.
    Thanks for all tips,

If memory serves, to get multi-cpu working, you must enable acpi in the bios. Given that this is a pIII, it is in the era where api was either really buggy or was off by default (so you should also check to make sure the bios was the latest...)

  • Solaris 8 ufsrestore issues

    Hello all,
this is my first post here.
    I am experiencing a strange issue when attempting to do a ufsrestore of an entire backed up OS (Sol 8) The restore goes fine but some time after the new server is up and running I start getting these errors;
    # Jun 13 01:20:00 usmlsu52new.arrow.com cron[23056]: open_module: stat(/usr/lib/security/pam_projects.so.1) failed: No such file or directory

I now can't do anything on the server? I am at the root prompt but when I try to run a ls, df -k, cp it just gives me the same error complaining about the ld.so.1 file missing??
Can anyone help me with this
    Thanks
    Paul.

Could be the library file is missing or corrupted. Need to copy the good version of the library file.
Since, the system is up, the recovery steps are as follows:
    1) /usr/sbin/static/mv /usr/lib/ld.so.1 /usr/lib/ld.so.1.buggy
    2) /usr/sbin/static/cp /etc/lib/ld.so.1 /usr/lib
It worked for me on Solaris 9 and Solaris 10.
In case, the server doesn't boot, need to boot of media, mount the root file system and /usr, if /usr is a separate filesystem and perform the above commands.

  • Lucreate failed on solaris 10

    Hi All
tried to create a new boot environment using lucreate on Solaris 10 release 10/08
    /usr/sbin/lucreate -c live -m /:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0:ufs \
    -m -:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s1:swap \
    -m /tmp:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s4:ufs \
    -m /usr:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s6:ufs \
    -m /var:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s5:ufs \
    -m /local:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s7:ufs -n cloned
my disk lay out on c0t0d0 and c0t1d0 are identical, df shows a pretty straight forward config:
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on

I am running out of ideas as everything looks correct to me
    thanks for your help

    Hi,
Try devfsadm -Cv (might be small c) but if you have tried running that below command many times you will need to clear the failed devices before it will work. The command your using looks fine though. Also are you using x86 or sparc as x86 is very buggy, and one final thing have you installed the live upgrade patch cluster.

  • Solaris Cluster 3.3 on VMware ESX 4.1

    Hi there,
I am trying to setup Solaris Cluster 3.3 on Vmware ESX 4.1
My first question is: Is there anyone out there setted up Solaris Cluster on vmware accross boxes?
    My tools:
    Solaris 10 U9 x64
    Solaris Cluster 3.3
    Vmware ESX 4.1
    HP DL 380 G7
    HP P2000 Fibre Channel Storage
When I try to setup cluster, just next next next, it completes successfully. It reboots the second node first and then the itself.
After second node comes up on login screen, ping stops after 5 sec. Same either nodes!
I am trying to understand why it does that? I did every possibility to complete this job. Setted up quorum as RDM from VMware. Solaris has direct access to quorum disk now.
I am new to Solaris and I am having the errors below. If someone would like to help me it will be much appreciated!
Please explain me in more details i am new bee in solaris :) Thanks!
I need help especially on error: /proc fails to mount periodically during reboots.
Here is the error messages. Is there any one out there setted up Solaris Cluster on ESX 4.1 ?

    @TimRead
    Hi, thanks for reply,
I have already followed the steps also on your links but no joy on this.
What i noticed here is cluster seems to be buggy. Because i have tried to install cluster 3.3 on physical hardware and it gave me excat same error messages! interesting isnt it?
Please see errors below that I got from on top of VMware and also on Solaris Physical hardware installation:
    ERROR1:
Comment: I have installed different memories all the time. It keeps sayying that silly error.
problem_statement : *Node has insufficient physical memory.
<analysis>5120 MB of memory is installed on this node. The current release of Solaris Cluster requires a minimum of 1024 MB of physical memory in each node. Additional memory required for various Data Services.</analysis>
<recommendations>Add enough memory to this node to bring its physical memory up to the minimum required level.
    ERROR2
Comment: Despite rmt directory is there I gor error below on cluster check
    <problem_statement>The /dev/rmt directory is missing.
<analysis>The /dev/rmt directory is missing on this Solaris Cluster node. The current implementation of scdidadm(1M) relies on the existence of /dev/rmt to successfully execute 'scdidadm -r'. The /dev/rmt directory is created by Solaris regardless of the existence of the actual nderlying devices. The expectation is that the user will never delete this directory. During a reconfiguration reboot to add new disk devices, if /dev/rmt is missing scdidadm will not create the new devices and will exit with the following error: 'ERR in discover_paths : Cannot walk /dev/rmt' The absence of /dev/rmt might prevent a failover to this node and result in a cluster outage. See BugIDs 4368956 and 4783135 for more details.</analysis>
    ERROR3
Comment: All Nics have different MAC address though, also I have done what it suggests me. No joy here as well!
<problem_statement>Cluster node (3.1 or later) OpenBoot Prom (OBP) has local-mac-address? variable set to 'false'.
<analysis>The local-mac-address? variable must be set to 'true.' Proper operation of the public networks depends on each interface having a different MAC address.</analysis>
    <recommendations>Change the local-mac-address? variable to true: 1) From the OBP (ok> prompt): ok> setenv local-mac-address? true ok> reset 2) Or as root: # /usr/sbin/eeprom local-mac-address?=true # init 0 ok> reset</recommendations>
    ERROR4
Comment: No comment on this, i have done what it says no joy...
<problem_statement>/proc fails to mount periodically during reboots.
<analysis>Something is trying to access /proc before it is normally mounted during the boot process. This can cause /proc not to mount. If /proc isn't mounted, some Solaris Cluster daemons might fail on startup, which can cause the node to panic. The following lines were found:</analysis>
