Bugs in DropShadow and Gaussian Blur?

I just figured, that both effects create strange artifacts outside the actual node in my application (JFX 1, Update 1 on Windows XP). After checking the online doc and searching for some other nice looking effects, I realized, that these problems appear in the [JavaFX EffectsPlayground |http://www.javafx.net/samples/EffectsPlayground/index.html] aswell.
To reproduce them:
Start the EffectsPlayground, choose "Blur" or "Drop Shadow" as effect and give them a big radius (like 20). I see some strange artifacts right to the picture. The only Question is: is this specific to my system, or is this a general Bug?

Hello,
no, your screenshot looks fine. Here you can see what DropShadow and GaussianBlur look on my PC: Screenshot
Notice the strange look on the right for both effects (Black for DropShadow, white for GaussianBlur).
However, here are some more details on my System:
Windows XP SP3, Java 1.6.0_11, JavaFX 1 Update 1. My Graphics Card is an ATI Radeon X1600, I downloaded the latest official drivers yesterday which did not help.

  • Transform Effect and Gaussian Blur creates issues

Here is one issue I cannot figure out how to correct. At times, I apply the Distort - Transform effect on a clip to scale up/down, etc,...then the next clip (which I dissolve to) has the Gaussain Blur applied to it. When I apply the blur the previous clip (with the Transform effrect) shifts. I have the Blur effect above the Transform effect in the Effects pannel and it still does not help. I cannot figure out how to stop the clip from shifting.

I recall a similar bug with Gaussian Blur a while back.  I winder if that bug is still around.

I seen both of these in Final Cut. What is the difference between them?

FX Plug filters rely more on the graphics card, and therefore can offer more RT performance...

  • Reproduce Unsharp Mask Using Gaussian Blur

    Hello,
I know the effect of Unsharp Mask can be achieved using Gaussian Blur and Blending Mode only.
    Given a layer 'L' (The original) its USM(L, Amount - 100, Radius - 10, Threshold - 0) is given by:
    GBL = GB(L, Radius - 10) - Gaussian Blur.
    Difference  = L - BGL.
    USM = L + Difference.
I made it using 'Image Apply' and Gaussian Blur yet the result is different.
    Does Photoshop uses different method?
How can the accurate result be achieved?

    Hi Chris,
All I did was as follwoing:
    1. Created black image in 32 Bit Mode (RGB Mode so numbers will be the same in MATLAB).
    2. Applied GB with Radius 3.
    3. Saved as 32 bit TIF.
    4. Loaded at MATLAB using imread.
    5. Extracted the first channel (They aer all the same).
    The result is up.
Something went wrong with the numbers.
Anyhow, how come the result of my classic Gaussian Kernel are so different from Photoshop's?
    Here are the example:
This is the GB Kernel of Photoshop for Radius = Sigma = 2:
Here is the GB Kernel of a classic GB using STD of 2 and support of size [11, 11] (Just like photoshop):
    And here is the difference:
As you can see, it is very noticeable difference.
The blur using the classic kernel is much harsher.
Moreover, Using the classic kernel trying to replicate USM (   USM(O) = O + 2(O - B)   )yields something completely different.
    What am I missing here?
    Thank You.
    P.S.
Well, I'm just playing for fun, so I don't have "Run Time" limitations :-).

I'm trying to isolate skin with a secondary layer and am successful.  I want to blur the skin to reduce blemishes but when doing so the blur and degrain sliders don't seem to have an effect. Can I apply a gaussian blur fx on just that secondary? Can't seem to figure this out.  Is there a better way to smooth skin?

Here's an Adobe help page for isolating skin with suggestion on the use of the blur slider also:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/using/apply-secondary-color-corrections.html
And here's one of the original creators of Iridas/SpeedGrade, Patrick Palmer, a six minute vid-tut on using secondaries (specifically in CS6 but this hasn't changed):
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-speedgrade-cs6/secondary-color-correction-in-speedgrade-cs 6/
I'd note, the "blur" and "denoise" tools on the Secondary tab are more about smoothing the keying of the secondary ... they apply a bit of blur or de-noising to make the secondary smoother and cover over the odd pixel or three or four that don't "fit" the key of the secondary in the middle of something you're aiming for.
In current SpeedGrade, I'd try using the Guassian Blur (Range) effect, and sample a good range of the skin tones.
And a lot of people use Red Giant's "Cosmo" plug-in over in AfterEffects or Premiere Pro ... it's a tool designed specifically for working skin tones, dealing with blemishes, wrinkles, spots, and such.

  • What's differences gaussian blur in Photoshop and Premiere?

I would like to ask about the gaussian blur of Photoshop and Premiere.
Normally, in Photoshop it says pixels in radius, but in Premiere it says only blurriness. Does anybody knows the differences of these two? I used Premiere to apply gaussian filter for our clips, but I want to know the value with pixels in radius.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure.  But you could probably match it up pretty quickly.
Blur an image in Premiere with blurriness 50.
Open the original image and the blurred image in Photoshop, put them together in the same document and set the layer blend mode to "difference".
Then blur the original with Gaussian Blur and change the radius until it matches Premiere's result (image goes black because the 2 layers are the same).
My guess is that the numbers have the same meaning, but someone put a really wrong label on it in Premiere.

  • Bizarre Gaussian Blur Bug - FCP7

    Hello everyone,
Have an interesting pickle. I'm working as media manager on a production involving multiple editors. When clients are ready to review, they post their ready sequences into a project and send them to me to encode and upload.
However, whenever one particular episode is sent to me, there seem to be gaussian blur filters applied to random clips. Tried to see some sort of pattern in where the blurs are automatically applied, but there's none that I can see.
Each of the affected clips are, allegedly, "clean" when sent to me, but when opened each of these random clips will have three identical gaussian blur filters on them, each blur level set to 2.
This also happens when I open the projects on other systems in the office.
We are all on Final Cut Pro 7.
I suspect poltergeists, but I figured I'd pick your brains and see if you all have any ideas.
    Thanks!
    Brian

I'm getting sequences in a Final Cut Pro project file. We used to rock XMLs, but we opted to just have the editors copy and paste "ready to cook" sequences into a project and then I snatch it from them. As for the clip names, they are well-named (essentially the film roll then clip number, e.g. NYC082510_001) so we don't have any redundancies as far as clip names go.
As far as if the editors like me... all signs point to yes. I don't think any of them have any sort of vendetta against me. Then again, sneaky clandestine gaussian blurs would be a pretty editor-like way of causing mischief and mayhem.

  • Gaussian blur and Colour Adjust Hue/Saturation cause freeze-up

After using PS Elements 9 for a year, it has started to give me problems, and I can't find a fix for it online.  Choosing Gaussian Blur, or Color - Adjust Hue/Saturation causes PSE 9 to freeze up and stop responding.  This just started today, and I'm baffled.  Some of the other filters have stopped working, but they don't cause a freeze-up.  I've done a disk clean and defrag, but I haven't done anything different to my computer in a long time.  I can try to uninstall/reinstall, but I'd rather not if there's a simpler solution.  I'm on a Toshiba Satelite Notebook, i5 processor,  64-Bit OS Windows Home Premium.  I'd appreciate any insight into this issue.

The editor saved prefs often get corrupted. You may need to rebuild the editor preferences to resolve any conflicts.
Hold down the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. Release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Or hold down the keys whilst double clicking on PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe (in Program Files x86\Adobe)
You should see a pop up box with the words: Delete Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File?
    Click on Yes
Then wait whilst Elements rebuilds the preferences.

  • Issue with Gaussian Blur and Spot Colors

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue.
Setup: We are using CS4 + CS5 Illustrator on Mac OS 10.5.X and 10.6.X
We created a spot color radial gradient filled circle over a background of the same spot color. The gradient went from 100% of the color down to 2%. We then applied a gaussian blur set to 50 pixels so that we had a nice smooth transition from the circle blurring outwards over the background with the blur blending into the spot color background.
The problem arises when we select "Retain Spot Colors" on the blur. It fills the gradient circle with 100% solid color (but at the 2% range of the gradient so it appears white) and deletes the blur effect. If we don't select "Retain Spot Colors", it converts the blur to process and we get a banding on our printouts where the spot background and CMYK gaussian meet.
We tried the gaussian blur set at 5 pixels all the way up to 55 in 10 pixel increments but nothing worked. We tried different spot colors, same issue. We know we can do the background in Photoshop and import it into Illustrator as a workaround, but we are constantly editing and changing files and would like to keep everything in Illustrator.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this or if there is even a solution. We have not tried Illustrator 5.5 and do not want to invest the money in the upgrade yet. We would prefer to stay with both CS4 and CS5.
    Thank you for any input.

    Hi Mike,
Okay, I have some new information that changes things. I misunderstood what the issue was from the designer. My apologies in advance for the confusion. There are actually two issues but they are somewhat related.
    Issue 1:
We are concerned with banding on the outside of a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur over a patterned background of the same spot color.  We do not  know if this is becasue of the number of pixels on the blur, the version of Illustrator, the blending of the blur into the patterned background, etc... While the banding looks slight on screen it is more pronounced when printed. There are many variables and we have tried everything we can think of to create a smooth transition but we keep getting some banding.
The first image shows what happens when the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu) is unchecked. We believe that the spot color is being treated as CMYK and causing the blur to be a slightly different color than the spot color background thus causing the banding.
The second image shows what happens when we select Preserve Spot Colors. We lose the blur.
The third image is what we are trying to achieve over a over a patterned background of the same spot color. This was achieved with the Preserve Spot Colors unchecked and also unchecking Overprint Preview in the Separations Preview Palette. However, this brings us right back to the issue with the Preserve Spot Color being unchecked.
    Issue 2:
The issue is that we want to print a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur (over 50 pixels). In order to preview the blur effect correctly we have to uncheck the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu). However, we have recently found out that this will not work with the software our printers use to do separations. If we check the Preserve Spot Color for the separator, it turns the blur into a large square of color (see screensnap below). We have played around with the Add: x Around Object setting in Raster Effects but it has not helped.
    3. If we do not select "Preserve Spot Color", the blur looks correct but it is no longer a spot color but CMYK when separated.
I hope that isn't too confusing and makes sense. Again, apologies for the mixup on my part originally. Thanks again for any help.

Any suggestions on how to remove an "aura" from around a selection in an image?  I shoot pictures at rodeos.  To make the rider stand out, I create a mask around the rider and then blur the background with Gaussian Blur.  This results in a noticeable blur around the outside of the selection.  I have tried using Feathering as well as other Refine Edge Tools.  The only thing that works is to go around the edge with the Clone Tool.  This is time consuming and not totally successful.  So, my two big questions are: (1) Is there a better (simpler) way to avoid the aura? and (2) If not, is there a way to remove the aura that is simpler??
    Thanks in Advance,
    Art Schwartz

Sorry, what with the long title I had neglected the body of the message and your statement
The only thing that works is to go around the edge with the Clone Tool. This is time consuming and not totally successful.
seems to answer my first question.
Did you do that before or after blurring?
Have you alternatively tried using Content Aware Fill?

  • Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files

We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
    Here are my system specs...
    Model Name:    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacPro5,1
      Processor Name:    6-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:    2.66 GHz

      SMC Version (system):    1.39f11
      SMC Version (processor tray):    1.39f11

I'm getting this same issue - or a similar one. It seems to only happen when I run the Gaussian blur command, and during the same process in my workflow. It also seems for me to happen when I have made a selection from a layer above that is a smart object.
Let me describe the scenario that I have experienced a couple times in the past week. (BTW I just upgraded to CS5 only a couple weeks ago).
Usually I have a document open with dozens or hundreds of layers. The effect that I am executing when this seems to happen is where I have a group of shapes or placed image smart object layer and I'm creating a shadow layer by making a blank layer below said group or image, making a selection from the above group or image, and then filling the selection in the blank layer with a color - which I then run the Gaussian blur filter on, and afterward warp transform to get my realistic looking shadow effect.
But the problem is in seemingly random instances and on seemingly random documents when I run that Gaussian blur, Photoshop freaks out and craps the bed. And by craps the bed I mean deletes pixel data from multiple layers in my document very randomly, and also generates odd bright colors all throughout the document.
You can see the initial freak out in this screen shot from when I just initially selected the Gaussian blur filter from the menu (but had not yet even clicked "OK"): http://cl.ly/3KTx . The strange thing is that I had just run this series of steps on the above layer which in the screen shot you'll see as "Layer 44", and all was well.
Here's a screen shot showing the file after I closed it out, restarted Photoshop, and opened the file back up: http://cl.ly/3K2C . In case you can't tell, data from several layers all over the file is missing and corrupted.
I'm sure I don't have to explain how exasperating this is, as this represents more than a year's worth of work on a client project, no joke. Fortunately I'm mostly done with the actual site build, but that makes the loss of the artwork files of no less consquence - especially seeing as how I'm not ACTUALLY finished and I did in fact need all of that data to complete the project.
Anyhow, some additional details which may or may not be related to the issue:
    - The issue seems to happen randomly. As stated above the same steps did not produce the error just a few minutes before.
    - I have had this issue with another file this week where I was doing the same processes on another shape.
    - It seems that this is occuring when I make the selection from a layer that is a smart object of some type
    - I also noticed artifacts in the weird colors (after I tried running the processes again, so not in the above screenshot) that were actually design elements from an entirely different document that I was working with earlier this evening.
    - I have filed a bug report.
Dunno what else to describe, but I hope you guys can get this figured out, seriously. I paid way too much for my upgrade to CS5 to have bugs in key software features corrupt my files thank you.
Also, in regards to my system...

  • Is there no gaussian blur transparency feature in keynote?

In keynote, you can make a shape transparent, but I also want to add a gaussian blur. I could have sworn this was a feature in keynote, but I can't seem to find it. Please tell me it exists, it's such a sleek effect and it would be a total shame if the Yosemite still hasn't added this feature. Currently on OS X Yosemite 10.10 with the newest version of Keynote (V. 6.5)

This used to be possible in the old version of Keynote. When you selected an image and went to the image properties, you could move the Sharpness drawer from the center to the left, thus creating a gaussian blur. In the current version the drawer is already on the left, so you could only sharpen the image.
It could be a bug, although one which has existed from the moment on they release the new Keynote back in 2013.

  • Chris Cox: Fade a gaussian blur on a layer with a mask, who should I thank?

I remember in the past that it was impossible to fade a gaussian blur if it was applied on a layer with a layer mask with the link icon active, as the blur also affected the mask. (some sharpen filters also affect both layer and mask)
Now, even in Ps 13.0.1.3, I notice that it is possible to fade, both the layer and mask using the fade function.
I'm gladly surprised it had been implemented, as I felt reluctancy to do it in the past when I mentionned the issue.
It now makes a more natural and discoverable workflow.
Thanks to whoever implemented it, or corrected that bug according on how it is seen!

Not sure who made that change.

  • Creating a symbol from shape with gaussian blur = problem

I am trying to create artwork to map to a globe using the 3D revolve effect...the problem is the shape/layer I'm using to create the "glow" effect (compound path filled with white and a gaussian blur applied):
When I create a symbol out of this, here is the problem (note the "excess" areas on the top and right):
...resulting in this messed up globe...
Doing an outer glow effect instead of gaussian blur results in the same thing (its definitely the blur causing this, deleting the shape fixes the problem).  Expanding the shape with the blur results in an image the same size as the bounding box in image 2 above. Any ideas how to address this?
    thx

Yep, that did it! (something strange going on now with the longitude/latitude lines going thru India, but I'll work on that later)...Thank you!

  • How to batch apply Gaussian blur in Aperture

I find myself applying Gaussian Blur to a lot of our shots via Photoshop CS3.
We keep all our shots in Aperture, so I click the image to edit it in CS3, copy layer, apply gaussian blur and set transparency to 30-40%....
Is there a way to automate this ?

You can set up scripts/actions in PS which will automatically be applied to every image that is opened, but I can't remember how you do it. And it would be applied to every image whether you like it or not...

P.S. Most people are trying to sharpen the images, why blurring?
