Building a HTPC running Arch

Hey guys,
I'd like to build a new media PC (HTPC) with Arch Linux and MythTV. I did some googling already about TV cards and it seems that a TeVii S470 card shoud be running fine according to http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TeVii_S470.
My current plan is to use an Intel Atom based mainboard with Nvidia's ION chipset (2x1.8 GHz Atom CPU) with the already mentioned TV card. The television would be connected with HDMI then. The NVIDIA card should be capable of VDPAU, so 1080p movies shouldn't be an issue.
I'd like to know if anyone already has tried a similar setup or might see any issues I'm running into.

.:B:. wrote:A media server streams, but that's just it. It still has to be decoded. You'll still need some type of hardware to do that.
Virtually all TV's and A/V-amplifiers these days are equipped with an ethernet port and support uPNP/DLNA. My 2-yr old Philips TV has such support, but I prefer the PS3 as it is much quicker in fetching and displaying results. There are also a lot of cheap set-top-boxes like the boxxee by D-Link that are low-energy-consuming when compared to a HTPC and (iirc) are completely silent. Recent settop-boxes are based on a chipset that is able to hardware-decode almost anything up to 1080p, so they should be well up to any task.
If all goes well, I will be building a new home starting in Q3/Q4 this year, and I'm reviewing the possibilities to manage all of my digital content in 1 central location. DLNA / uPNP seems like the way to go. Serverside I'm really into ps3mediaserver, although it is a java-app. I have been using Coherence, Fuppes and Mediatomb. PMS works nearly out of the box and Coherence looked promising, but sadly development seems to have stopped.
My server also handles bittorrent, NFS, samba, http, postgresql and I'm looking to make it a mailserver as well.
Clientside I could use a settop-box in every room I want to hook up, but then I would be needing a monitor, amplifier and speakers in every room, which would cost a lot of money and I think it would not look good (the Wife Acceptancy Factor is crucial...). Maybe using next-gen tablets could provide a partial solution, or if I settle for audio only, closed solutions as provided by Logitech Squeeze (WAF-) and Sonos (WAF++) might be an option.
This is a rough outline, though - but my current setup proves that it is possible: my TV, PS3, laptop and office desktops all have access to my central repo of digital content (audio, video, photo). Anyway - what was the OP'ers question again?

  • Installing and running Arch linux on the new MacBook 2015

    So Apple has just started taking orders for the new 2015 MacBook. You know --
    the thinnest and lightest MacBook to date (even thinner than the MacBook Air),
    with a 12 inch retina display, the Intel Core M processor, a single USB-C port,
    and the new force touch trackpad.
    I'm pretty sure there are a few people like me who'd like to buy this new
    MacBook and then install and run Arch (or some other flavor of linux) on it.
    But of course, this MacBook is in many ways very dissimilar to previous MacBook
    Pros and MacBook Airs. So this thread is a shout out to likeminded individuals
    who are willing to brave the odds and install Linux on this new machine, so we
    can help each other figure out (and hopefully fix) the inevitable issues that
    will arise when we venture into this uncharted territory!
    I have a little bit of experience installing and running Arch on MacBook Pros
    and other Apple computers, but I'm (very) far from being an expert. But based
    on my limited experience, I think the following areas will pose the biggest
    challenges to getting Linux properly up and running on the new MacBook:
    1. Installation: it's possible that booting a live USB will fail. So we might
       have to use a CD. Indeed, perhaps we may even have to build a special ISO
       image for this laptop. And once the install is complete, EFI/EFISTUB booting
       with/without refit/refind may or may not work. Also, installing a bootloader
       (grub, gummiboot, etc.) for dual booting Mac OS X and Linux may be a
       challenge. We might have to endure kernel panics and deal with cryptic error
       messages while booting.
    2. Wifi may or may not work reliably. We might have to do some tinkering with
       different drivers, etc.
    3. Battery life may not be very good. We might have to fix a few things here.
    4. The HiDPI retina display may or may not work properly with specific window
       managers/desktop environments. Fonts/icons might be too tiny, may not scale,
       etc.
    5. The new Force touch trackpad may not work out of the box. In fact, I'm
       fairly sure the regular xf86-input-synaptics package won't play nice with
       this trackpad. There may not be support for features like the trackpad's
       haptic feedback, multi-finger gestures, pressure sensitivity, etc. Indeed,
       this might actually take a while to get properly working under Linux.
    6. I don't know if the new USB-C port will work out of the box. It may not
       play nice with USB flash drives and other peripherals and there may be
       issues with ehci/uhci/whatever.
    I tried Googling around trying to learn as much as I could about the issues
    above, but since the laptop is going on sale only today and most users are
    probably not interested in running Linux on it, I came up quite empty. I think
    many others on this forum might also have faced the same issue.
    So here's an open invitation. Let's share our experiences trying to get linux
    working on this laptop. If you buy this laptop and try to install Arch on
    it, please let us know how it went! Even if some things work out of the box, it
    might be useful for others to know, so please share.
    And of course, if you have more information/gotchas: for example, if you
    encountered and managed to fix one or more of the issues above, or you
    encountered a problem that's not on the list above, or even if you tried
    something and it didn't work out as expected, please post below. I'm sure this
    will be a very big help to others trying to solve similar issues on the same
    hardware. Thanks!

    It would probably be beneficial to post the output of lsusb -vvvv and dmesg.

    2. Broadcom BCM4360 AirPort Extreme, not supported.
    5. The new Force touch trackpad and keyboard, both SPI bus devices, do not work.
    On 2, it may just be a case of needing firmware, my laptop has a BCM43602 card, and the firmware required has only just been added to the linux-firmware package.  Prior to that I had to install it manually.
    On 5, I'm wondering if you identified them as SPI devices by looking in OS X, I ask because my laptop categorises my keyboard and trackpad in the same way.  But they are actually still both connected to the USB bus, and presumably using SPI as an interconnect between the keyboard/trackpad and the microcontroller that tie them together.

  • Reasonable to run Arch from a CF drive?

    I'm building a NAS box for my basement and the frame is going to be a Dell Dimension 2400.  I'm using 2x 2TB sata drives which will be configured in Raid-1 for redundancy purposes(losing a drive and everything on it sucks).
    Anyhow, I want my two storage drives to be completely dedicated to my data so,  I've decided to investigate the possibility of installing and running Arch on a CF card connected via IDE.  I've seen mixed yays and nays online from my research, but, in the end, the Arch community has always had not only the best documentation but also one of the most knowledgeable communities I've seen.
    So, What do you think?
    Oh, and I plan on running X with openbox for speed.  I'm just running a couple web daemons to download my shows.
    Thanks!

    EDIT* - eheheh, I just found an interesting article about installing sickbeard and sabnzbd on freenas.
    Awebb wrote: Does it have to be Linux? If you're not too shy to use BSD, I recommend trying FreeNAS. It has everything a home server needs and it is even capable of satisfying a mid-size corporate's file server's requirements. You wouldn't need openbox, it comes with a very sophisticated web interface.
    Its going to need to be able to run
    1) Sickbeard
    2) Sabnzbd
    I did briefly examine freeNAS on their website.  seems nice and although I know nothing about freeBSD, after moving through various linux distros and then finally successfully installing and using Arch, I'm sure I could figure it out.  Actually, originally I planned this project in a way that would make this machine a standalone NAS box using freeNAS.  It wasn't until a couple weeks ago I decided that if I did that, it would mean that I would still need some machine to stay on 24/7 which would run Sickbeard and Sabnzbd to supply video content to the NAS box.  This defeats a portion of my purpose in that I currently have everything running and stored on what is more of a gaming machine with a large PSU and I'd like to save the power and not have that machine run all the time.
    So, the idea was born to just build a box in which its primary function is to store media however it does have an OS for the purpose of running these two web servers so that it can be a lone machine.

  • Please help me choose a netbook for running arch

    I'm looking for a 10-12" netbook with a long battery life. Currently I'm considering Samsung N140, N150, N210 and NC10. I like the look of N150 but I don't know how well will it run Arch. I'm also considering MSI Wind u160, but the awful gloss of the body scares me off.
    At first I was very sure I'll pick Benq u121, but the I found out that Intel GMA 500 has very poor support.
    Could anyone share his experience with Arch on netbooks with nice battery life? I'm talking about battery life of 6+ hours.

    To avoid multiple threads on the same subject, please continue here: Best Netbook?

  • Old Laptop would like to run Arch on it

    Hi,
    I bought a cheap laptop on Ebay a RM A10 specs 1Ghz Amd Cpu 256mb ram 20gb HD... waiting for a power supply at the moment so do not have much more info at the moment.
    Will need to source a card for wifi.
    Question is would it run Arch? do I need more memory? and is 20gb big enough [mostly will be used to web and mail!]
    MrG

    I have an old laptop similar to that (1.6ghz processor, 256mb ram, 20 Gig HD). I only have one partition on it and with that setup I have space for a few movies and albums I've downloaded. I've been meaning to put more ram into this one and I'd recommend you do that same. Of course it's not entirely necessary.

  • Configuring Forms Builder 10g to run (Ctrl-R) against application server

    I would like to run forms from my working directory against our development application server and config, rather than having a local OC4J running. I have configured this by setting the application server URL runtime preference to "http://<server>.<domain>:80/forms/frmservlet?config=dev". This works fine.
    However, when I run the Form, I get "FRM-40010: Cannot read form H:\Neil\TAF00180.fmx". This is because we open our FMBs from a locally mapped drive (i.e. I opened the FMB from H:\Neil\TAF00180.fmb). When run against the application server it seems Forms Builder trys to run an executable with the same path as the FMB - H:\Neil\TAF00180.fmx, but the application server has no knowledge of a mapped H-drive.
    The only solution I can think of is to have an H-drive mapped on the application server to the same location as our locally mapped network drive.
    This doesn't seem like the correct solution to me. How should we configure Oracle Forms 10g and the application server to allow us to run our own working versions against the applications server and config?

    Slava Natapov wrote:
    I guess Neil concern is that OC4J and Forms Server are using own formsweb.cfg and .env files
    And settings can be different.
    For example what if local formsweb.cfg configured to run Jinitiator, but server formsweb.cfg configured for JPI, or they configured with different lookandfeel parameter, or local and server default.env use different NLS_DATE_FORMAT?Hi Slava, Hi Neil
    I think this is more related to "discipline" for the developers....
    @ Neil : How many developers do you have in your team ?
    Are developers allowed to "customize" their formsweb.cfg and .env files ?
    or more customized basejinit.htm, registry.dat, additional jar files ... etc
    or more using different oracle_home for their installation of Developer Suite.
    @ Slava : Using local formsweb.cfg and .env files might not be a problem if every developer machine is installed the same way (i.e. the same oracle_home).
    Also, I don't think that using workingDirectory to network shared connection for each developer is a solution
    [dev1]
    workingDirectory= H:/dev1
    [dev2]
    workingDirectory= H:/dev2
    And at least this is requiring customized *.env files ! as the forms_path should be set for runtime in it for each developer.
    The registry entry is only for the builder to find the path to mmb and pll files for example, and compile well, but the runtime is using *.env files.
    And what about developing in windows and deploy it to linux ?
    I recently managed a project with junior and undisciplined developers. The boss had the same concern about each network drive per developer.
    My concern was how to eliminate all subjective considerations..
    And my answer was "Subversion" no mess with local or network version with the "copy of the copy of the copy of the fmb files".
    So all forms_path were set to C:\myApp\forms etc and each developer made a checkout and commit versions twice a day.
    And the Application Server was also "checked out" to have the latest revision and then ran it into a pre-version for production.
    If I had to make some important changes in the *.olb file or the *.pll files then I made a commit for all developers and then re-compile all *.fmb and re-commit and checkout again.
    I really don't matter if the developer used jinitiator or jpi but the right working copy.
    And standalone OC4J was enough to make basics tests for each developer.
    More tests were made by project managers at the application server level and then adjustments (if required) where sent to developers.
    Hope this helps.

    Jean-Yves

  • [SOLVED]possible to make live image of a current running arch system?

    Hi Friends!!!. Is it possible to make live iso image of a current running arch system? are there any tools available for that?(I want to do this cause When i install a new arch system, I want to remain my own customizations intact)
    Last edited by Pranavg1890 (2012-10-14 07:29:58)

    OK, so after reading the posts, I think that this is not possible.but i think this sould be feature which should be researched upon cause everytime I install arch on a new machine(arch reinstalls on same machine are very rare cause it's a rolling release and has excellent recovery tools) I have to spend a 5-6 hours of time configuring the system.so, i think it should be a feauture that should be worked upon.for eg. like you could chroot into the iso created and then replace the deafult configs by the one on your system or a system scanner which scans the changes on the system with respect  to default arch installation and make the necessary changes to the live image.Thanks friends for your replies. I mark this thread as solved.

    Where is the problem? Why is it even complaining about LabVIEW 2013? Has anyone seen this before?

    Now I remember installing VISA 5.4 to get rid of a nasty bug. It must have installed the 2013 Run-Time when I did that.
    So now I need to distribute 2 runtimes with my application?!?!

  • Does Anyone Run Arch For Server Use?

    I was curious if anyone here uses / recommends Arch Linux for dedicated server use? It seems 'most' people here are Linux enthusiast and run this as their distribution of choice. Has anyone seen or have any comments about loading this on a server or VM and using it reliably as a server like one would say Debian Linux or Slackware Linux? I understand Arch is a rolling release distribution and it's very bleeding edge which kind of impacts how reliable something can be however I've never had Arch Linux crash or do anything dumb however I've not used it massively. Would like to see how others view this topic and such.
    Also for my own interests, if you don't use Arch Linux for a server based role, what do you prefer instead?
    Last edited by Carlwill (2013-04-29 21:02:00)

    https://wiiking2.com/forums <-- I run this on an Arch-based Linode with Lighttpd for static content, PHP-FPM/FastCGI for dynamic and its honestly not that bad to maintain.
    The main trick is to stay current with the packages and always be careful with updating. I normally keep my config stored on a local backup just so if something does go wrong, I can always get things running again. It took just as long as it would normally take me to do a Debian/Ubuntu setup in all honesty, if not faster.
    My advice to you is to install only what you need if you're going to install Arch on a production server. The less packages you have to worry about, the less maintaining you may or may not have to do, if any at all. We're lucky enough to have the announcements page bring up the big changes so that's something to consider.
    Honestly I would only recommend using Arch as a server if you know that the web-based software that you're using really doesn't mix well with frozen versions or if you're a developer and working on your own stuff. (Which I currently am) But when they say that it is as stable as you make it, the truth cannot be any more clearer than that.

  • Building resx at run time!

    Hi everyone,
    following off from :
    Older Post
    I have two xml files, I decided to read them and construct a resx on the run like this:
    XmlTextReader reader = new XmlTextReader("Finnish.xml");
    ResXResourceWriter writer = new ResXResourceWriter("Resource.fi-FI.resx");
    string key = string.Empty;
    string value = string.Empty;
    while (reader.Read())
    if (reader.NodeType == XmlNodeType.Element && reader.Name == "Data")
    key = reader.GetAttribute("Key");
    while (reader.Read())
    if (reader.NodeType == XmlNodeType.Text)
    value = reader.Value;
    break;
    writer.AddResource(key, value);
    writer.Generate();
    writer.Close();
    This works and I see the Resource.fi-Fi.resx being created in the debug folder. (I will extend this to read two xml later)
    But how do I use that resx? Do I need to add it to the project in some way?

    if (rd.Contains(key))

    else

  • Error building Application that runs correctly

    Dear NI engineers,
    I am attempting to build an exe and it give me the following error:
    >>The VI is broken. Open the VI in LabVIEW and fix the errors.
    >>C:\Documents and Settings\Desktop\Desktop\IsomerXDistribution\MAIN.vi

    >>LabVIEW:  The VI is not executable. Most likely the VI is broken or one of its subVIs cannot be located.  Open the VI in LabVIEW using File>>Open and verify that it is runnable.
    All of the VI's in the hierachy and project and executable and located. Why will it not compile?
    Thank you for your quick response.

    The code i am using is a very large (about 350 VI's and methods) complex data structure that runs exceptional well in labview.
    I am posting a very small code that demonstrates the problem. Apparently passing a class by reference causes a broken VI error when compiling. It works perfectly fine when running threw labview. It would be costly to rewrite the VI's in a different format, for something labview internally supports and all other OOP language support, simply because of an erronous compiler.
    Why will this not compile, and how can i make it compile?

  • Folder of application builder(*.exe) with run-time DLL

    My application consists of main.vi, subvi folder, and example folder.
    In addition, I have to add the run-time libraries for add-on tool kit (advanced signal processing, lvwa.dll) which should be located in the root folder.
    (For exe application, can I set the location of DLLs to not the root folder but "DLL folder"?)
    In my several trials, I can't maintain the hierachy of "example folder".
    Instead of my intension, the NI application builder copied the files in the folder to the support directory.
    Can I locate the "example folder" to the root folder by using NI application builder?
    In summary, I want to get the folder structure by application builder.

    Hey Labmaster,
    What version of LabVIEW are you using?
    I am not too clear as to what you are trying to do. You can create folders and add anything from your project when creating an installer under the Source Files section in its properties.
    It might be easier if you'd attach a screen shot of what you are doing or trying to do.

Flex builder cannot locate the required version of Flash Player. You might need to install Flash Player 9 or reinstall Flex Builder. Do you want to try to run your application with the current version?". The popup itself happened before installing flash builder 4. But normally I would just hit yes and it would use whatever flashplayer is default.
    Now if I click yes it launches command prompt with a path to flex builder 3 installation folder. When running from flash builder 4, same happens except the path is the installation folder for flash builder 4. Flex then starts waiting for connection from debugger and after a while it prompts a timeout message. The command prompts title is ...\workspace\project\bin-debug\filename.swf.
    When opening the swf files directly from windows they open fine.
    I used the uninstaller software for flash player and then fetched both fp9&10 and reinstalled them. Which didn't help. When launching to browser everything works just fine, the problem occurs only when launching to standalone player. I tried to check registry settings if there would be something wrong, but all the paths for flashplayers seem to be ok.
    Is there any other hope to fix this than reinstalling flex builder 3 & flash builder 4 from scratch?

    You need content debugger FP installed
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html download it from there and install and you should see the problem go away
    Download the Windows Flash Player 10 ActiveX control content debugger (for IE) (EXE, 2.03 MB)

  • Flash builder 4 no run or debug

    Greetings.
    Thank you for completing a very interesting technology.  I am currently evaluating Flex platform to see if it is something I can rely on in the future when considering a RIA platform.
    I started with Flash Builder beta 2 about a week before final release came out.  All worked well as I was going through "flex in a week" series.
    However, when moving from a trial to the final release I do not have "Run" and "Debug" buttons any more. I uninstalled beta first.
    Both times I downloaded a plug-in version for windows.  I tried installing twice; first into an existing eclipse environment (Zend Studio) and after it didn't work uninstalled and tried with bundled version of Eclipse.  I have not tried downloading a standalone version yet.  The only way to see the result is through "Export release build" which is OK for final preview but is impossible to debug.
    I checked perspecitive customizer to see if the buttons were simply unchecked from the toolbar but they are nowhere to be found in the list.
    I also noticed that my workspace changes are never saved and I always have to open all the views over again each time I start the application. Do not know if this is related.
    How can I get back the debug and run buttons?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

    Try "Reset Perspective" in your Window menu.
