Cable modem - wrt54gs - nothing

I can connect my pc directly to my cable modem and connect to the internet just fine; however, when I connect it to my wrt54gs I CAN connect to the router but CAN NOT connect to the internet! I tried to apply a static ip,gateway, etc instead of automatic configuration but that also did not solve my problem. I also tried to connect my netgear router (which I used successfully two days ago at a different location) and once again no success. I have Charter as my provider and have to use the router to allow more than one person to connect in my house. I have much router-setup experience but I am just stumped. Because my cable modem is supplying an ip,gateway, dns, etc, my router should pick something up; the router is just not getting those settings even when I manually input them via static config. No I also do not need a username or password. Anyone? Thanks, -Chuck

Many cable ISPs only allow a single internet connection at a time. To prevent a second simultaneous connection they remember the MAC address of the current device. Only that single MAC address can use the internet connection.
It depends on the ISP how to "reset" this to allow a different device to connect. Some possibilities are:
* call the ISP (necessary with a few ISPs).
* on the computer which has a successful connection through the modem directly, manually release the IP address using the "ipconfig /release" command line tool in Windows.
* power down the modem and then power it up when the router is connected.
* like the previous but you have to wait a few minutes/hours/a night.
* reset the modem and then connect the router.
I cannot tell you which of these methods will work. I find often, powering everything down for the night and then powering up the next morning with the router connected will do it. But it depends fully on the ISP and how they do it.
The other option is to use the MAC address clone function in the router. Connect to http://192.168.1.1/ The function should be a subtab on the main Setup tab. Clone the MAC address of the computer which successfully can connect directly through the modem. If you open the web interface http://192.168.1.1/ from that computer it should be enough to press the "clone this pc" button and then saving the settings on that page.
After that, the computer and the router use the same MAC address. That is no problem, because MAC addresses are only valid inside an ethernet LAN and the router will only change the MAC address on the WAN/internet port and not on the LAN side where the computer is connected to the router.
After you cloned the MAC address of the computer you should be able to use the router or the computer directly on the modem without any resetting.

i have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem.
it worked for about 8 months.
My kid pressed a button by accident and now it won't work.
    the router just keeps resetting.
    i unplugged everything.
conencted 1 computer, and everything is fine.
    Received DHCP address.
Once i plug in a second computer it starts rebooting.
Both computers are set to DHCP.
NO internet connection is connected at this time for troubleshooting purposes.
Nothing is connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router (port for internet access), only 1 and 2 are connected.
i reset the router and still nothing.
i can connect 1 computer via wireless and 1 computer via direct connection and all is good. Once 2 devices are connected via direct connections it starts resetting.
i can even connect the modem to the router (for internet access), and connect to the linksys router via wireless from my computer and get internet access.
But once i direct connect 2 connections, the router starts resetting.
i have reset and reboot it with every combination i can think of.

Its good that its working now.
If it happens again, try this :
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
Do this when the computer os connected to the router with a cable.
than on the computer open Internet Explorer and in the Address Bar type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
It'll ask for the password. The default password is admin.
Once in the setup page. Click on the Wireless tab.
In there Change the Network Mode to mixed. And change the SSID to your name.
Change the Channel to 11. And Enable the SSID Broadcast.
Save the settings here. After that Click on Wireless Security and configure it accordingly and Save the settrings.
Than click on Advanced Wireless Settings. In there Disable the SES function.

  • Arris Cable Modem not working with WRT54G Router

I am at my wits end.Comcast just changed my old RCA cable modem for an Arris Telephony modem.(I had Comcast phone service added)The tech that did the install said the wireless G network was all up and running. (My 3 other computers and printer) Well lo and behold the network does not work at all. I only get internet through my wired computer and cannot access my router through 192.168.1.1 anymore.I tried powering down the router and modem by holding the reset for 30 seconds and unplugging them. Any help GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanx!

ok man, good new and bad news. Good news, i know what ur goin through cause i have the exact same problem. Tried a new router too (wrt54g to no avail). Bad news i have no idea how to fix it. I've tried everything. Linksys tech support hasn't emailed back after their originaly fix which did nothing. Please PM me if you get any ideas. Ps Have you noticed that when the setup page times out you can't get an ip wirelessly. Also, my temporary fix is power cycling. Somtimes it works for a few days, or sometimes a few hours.

  • WRT54GS slamming Cable modem with Packets

I'm having trouble with my WRT54GS locking up my Cable Modem. TWC says its slamming the cable modem with too many packets. Is there any way to check this on my end? Full story below.
A little about my set up. I have Time Warner Cable business class Roadrunner service. 5 Static IPs. 4 being used at the moment. The Cable modem has a 4 port switch built in. Port 1 has a month or so old WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Gateway mode, Channel 6). Port 2 goes to my Sonicwall Barracuda them my internal network which also has WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Router mode, Channel 1). Both routers are sitting next to each other. Ports 3 & 4 have a Vonage Router hooked to each of them.
I started having trouble April 5 with the Internet being down that morning, then that night and falling morning. I power cycled the Cable modem to restore service. Called Time Warner Cable after the third reset. They told me that didn't see anything wrong from their end and I should call them when it is down. I did this and they said they would send someone out the next morning Friday. They came out on Friday morning and Checked cable which the tech said was fine so he replaced the Cable modem around 11:30. Fifteen minutes after he left the internet went down. I called TWC again. They did diagnostics on the cable modem from their end and saw that whatever was hooked up to port 1 was sent out 400 packets/sec. I think they said the cable modem could only handle 300. Port 1 is connect a WRT54GS v7 (latest firmware). We are using it for our Blackberries from Cincinnati Bell for WIFI and UMA service (like T-Mobiles @Home service) for VoWiFi. I turned off all the phones but the router was still slamming the modem with packets. I turned off the WiFi just in case someone hacked our WPA2 key. Still slamming the router with packets with only my laptop hardwired to it for setting up the router. I turned off the router and the modem wasn't getting hammered anymore. Port 2 which is my internal network was only up to 150 after open a lot of TV shows. Ports 3 & 4 nothing. I disconnected the WRT54GS hooked to Port 1.
15 minutes after I got off the phone with TWC internet goes down. They send out a tech on Saturday to check the line again. he sees a slight problem on the line but it should not be causing a problem which the first guy might have thought. But since I am having trouble he goes outside and checks the connections. He finds loose connection and a bad line cap (blocking cable TV). He fixes the connections and replaced the line cap. He comes back inside and rechecks the line. Everything is great no more fluxation of signal or packet loss. I hook the WRT54GS back but it still takes down the modem. So I figure that it's just bad. So I take the WRT54GS from my internal network and set it up to match the one for the Blackberries it's replace. I install a WAP54G on the internal network in it's place. I can't get my Blackberry to get a UMA connection and doing Google searched find this page
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_Router_Tips
I set up my router and Assess point with the setting from the above except the channel setting leaving them on channel 6 & 1 so they don't interfere with each other. Set: Fragment Threshold : 2304 (256-2346), RTS Threshold : 2304 (0-2347) and Beacon Interval : 50 (20-1024 ms). I also Enable WMM QOS. My phone connects and internet seems to be staying up Saturday Evening. I come to work Sunday afternoon and Internet is still up. I check my phone I have UMA signal and everything is right with the world. 20 minutes later internet goes down. I unplug the WRT54GS and power cycle the cable modem. I am now waiting to see it the internet will stay up without any WRT54GS hooked up.
I have not had a problem before and both Linksys are not even 6 months old. I have read review were people have had trouble with the WRT54GS. Were some people have no trouble will other all kinds of trouble.

As you said cable connected to the pc is working fine!!...connect modem to the router WRT54GS...reset the router once (30 secs) in such a way that Power light on the router is blinking...power cycle complete network i.e., unplug modem & router power cable for 30 secs...plug in modem power cable once lights are solid green plug in the power cable to the router...its important that after upgrading firmware resetting the router is important...so try this & it should deifnately work.Do the wireless & advanced wireless settings as router is currently in default settings.
Also, you want to connect your access point WAP54G to the router & open the setup page of WAP54G using 192.168.1.245 do the wireless settings & try connecting to the wireless router & then check....should work.

  • WRT54GS wireless Can't Through Motorolla SB5101 Cable Modem

I have a linksys wrt54gs wireless router. I have had it for almost 2 years, it has been hooked up to a DSL modem, no problems whatsoever. I just moved, and now have a Motorolla SB5101 cable modem.
I followed all of the steps exactly for setting up the router with a cable modem. Everything went smooth, when I check the status of the router, it has an IP address, everything's good. But I can't get online. The modem is fine, I'm hooked up right now via USB. The router is also fine, I can log into it and everything. All the lights are good on both the router and the modem. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware, I've power cycled, nothing. I know it has to be something simple, some setting somewhere.
    Please help.

My troubles started after I upgraded my WRT54G V2.0 to the latest firmware.  The download firmware file is prefixed with WRT54GV4.0_ which leads me to question if it is supported to run on my WRT54G V2.0 machine.
The full name of the firmware binary in the Zip archive is "WRT54GV4.0_4.21.1.US_code.bin".  Please confirm or correct that this is the latest & greatest firmware version for my V2.0 WRT54G.
The problem presents itself as an in-ability to connect to ot ping any IP device past the RF side of the Motorola SBV5120 Cable Modem (also an older Motorola SB4100).
I use DHCP on the Modem with OOL's (Optimum On-Line) DHCP Server, in turn I use DHCP on the Router with the Modem as DHCP server and finally use the Router as DHCP Server for my home network desk top/laptop/printservers/USB wireless hubs.  Either the Router's MAC address or my laptop's MAC Address is reported in the SBV5120's configuration as CPE device, depending on which is connected.  I can always connect to the internet by cabling my laptop directly to the bodem's Ethernet port instead of the Router's WAN-Internet-Link port.
According to OOL tech Support, The SBV5120 and downstream devices do not care about which MAC addresses is used, just that one is present.  Apparently the ability of spoofing to defeate MAC Address Filtering worked, so they don't do it any more (My guess - let me know if I'm right or wrong)
The modem log consistently reports success in completing the DHCP process and reports itself as operational.  After a series of power cycle of both modem and router, I was finally able to connect to the internet through the router.  This lasted about 28 hours.  If I connect the IP LAN port of my laptop, I can connect to the internet.
At this point, I found the firmware alternative,  dd-WRT, and replaced the LinkSys firmware with the dd-WRT firmware.  Consistent ability to connect to the inter has been the result.  The Latest LinkSys firmware is in question.  I hope they have a plan to fix it.  If not, I'm going to look very closely at the alternatives when it comes time to purchase 11n products.

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4020&userrole=Linksy...
So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….

I cannot find a configuration on the Linksys WRT54G that will allow me to connect to the internet through the Arris TM402P/110 modem.  Have tried (1) setting the Linksys to use a dynamic WAN address, (2) setting the Linksys to static IP 67.185.155.0 with TCP/IP settings taken from the above configuration, (3) cloning the MAC address of the desktop computer's NIC and trying both (1) and (2) again.
The error message says that the network cable is not connected.  Is it possible that the connection between the router and cable modem requires a cross-over cable?
    Any suggestions?

on the router's ui... keep the internet type to dhcp....clone the mac address and then do a power cycle...ensure that the modem is completely powered off during the power cycle...if you have a battery back - up , remove the battery...after a minute , put back the battery and then plug in the power cable in the modem...
let me know if this helps you....

  • WRT54G V5 loses connection to BEFCMU10 cable modem

I have a BEFCMU10 on my cable internet service, with a WRT54G downstream. The cable modem works fine, and when the computer is connected directly to it, all is well.
When I connect the WRT54G, all is fine for, say, 8 hours, then the computer loses the connection. Cycling the power to the WRT is required to get up and running again.
I suspect that I have not configured the WRT correctly. It's set to use DHCP to connect to the BEFCMU. Are there specific settings I need to make for this setup?Message Edited by stowaway on 08-21-2006 05:05 PM

If you connect your computer directly to the modem, are you able to go online without any problem? If yes, try to access the setup page of the router and check the status page of the router and check if your getting a public IP address under internet IP. If your not getting a public IP, go to the setup tab and click on mac address clone, enable the mac clone and click clone pc's mac then save the settings. after that do a power cycle on the router and the modem and try to check again the status page of the router if your getting a public ip. If your getting a public ip and still having the same problem, try to lower down the MTU of the router to 1490 up to 1300.

  • Wrt54gs router to internet cable modem connection drop

With the wrt54gs router set at auto dhcp and mostly on default settings, after some time of inactivity the connection between the router and internet cable modem drops out.  That is, when there is no activity (no transmission to/from internet) the connection drops and the wireless connections shows "local only."  Any suggestions/comments on why this is so?  Thanks!

Have you tried to connect the Modem to the computer and checked if you are facing the same problem or not?
On your Router setup page, change the MTU size from AUTO to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1350 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Wireless tab and below Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Click on the sub tab under Wireless "Advanced Wireless Settings"
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • AC1200 vs. WRT54G with "faster" cable modem

I use a Wireless-G 2.4GHz router model WRT54G which I have had for 5 to 6 years.  My Time Warner Cable Co. recently sent me an "improved" modem with 2 freqs. 2.4 and 5.0 GHz and promises download speed up to 100 Mbps and upload 10Mbps.  My old cable modem ran bench speeds of about  21 Mbps download and  2.21 Mpbs upload.  Replacing the old cable modem improved the speed test to 51.35 Mbps download and 11.02Mpbs upload.  My question is would replacing my WRT54G router with an AC-1200 Smart Wi-Fi router improve my speed even more or would any increase be negligible?  Thanks for your input.

k, yup. thats a 802.11n router/modem or gateway. so it depends on what you are going to connect to it as to whether or not it will be 'faster' for you. one suggestion is to run your test on a wired pc to see what speeds you are getting now. plug a pc into one of the ports and run the speedtest.com test from there. It should be about whatever they tell you you are paying for. If your devices are not capable of connecting at the higher AC speeds then buying a new router won't do much for you. also if you decice on going with a new AC router you would be best to make sure that they will allow you to put that gateway into bypass mode or modem only mode. It will make connecting the router easier. If you still have that 54g router powered on you may want to turn it off as it may be slowing down your wireless connection. Try to connect to the ssid that is from the new gateway and test that as well.
