Cache Synchronization with JMS and a Message Driven Bean (MDB)

If I understand correctly, Toplink ueses the following configuration info to find the target to publish its session messages to a JMS server (having its URL as below) which provides the JNDI service that Toplink needs to look up the topic:

To do this, the EJB container that hosts the above MDB needs to be configured to know where the JMS server is by using the above URL same as in the Toplink sessions.xml file.
I am not clear that who provides the JNDI service for the Toplink session name lookup used by the MDB:

so that the MDB can find the currently running Toplink session and communicate with it.

Although TopLink is running in the application server’s VM, the only notable integration points with the server are for JTA and user-defined data sources. All of the work performed to get a session via SessionManager occurs solely within TopLink. When the call is made to retrieve a session, you aren’t getting the ‘active’ session identified by “Employee_Session” that is registered with the application server, rather a new session is created using the definition that exists for “Employee_Session” in sessions.xml.
When the call ‘session = SessionManager.getManager().getSession(“Employee_Session”)’ is made, the SessionManager simply looks for sessions.xml at the root level of its deployed jars or classpath, then looks for the “Employee_Session” tag within sessions.xml. If a session exists in the file with that name then a TopLink session object is created and returned.
Note that setting an environment entry as mentioned above simply allows for the session name to be declared dynamically. The call to ‘myEnv.lookup(“tl_session_name_for_mdb”)’ simply asks the bean’s environment for the <env-entry-value> that matches the <env-entry-name>. That string is then used in SessionManager (no different than a hard coded value would be) to identify the session in sessions.xml that is to be loaded.

It lists steps for connecting to servers when using RMI but not JMS. Appreciate any additional documentation on doing this in JMS. Many thanks

    JMS, by its nature, provides the connections between the different 'servers'. If all servers connect to the same JMS service then there are no additional actions required to have the 'servers' synchronize.

  • Usage of Apache Beehive JMS control inside Message Driven Bean

    Hi,
    I am developing a j2ee application using weblogic workshop 10.3. This application contains the following three projects.
    - J2EE Utility Project
    - Message Driven Bean Project
    - Ear Project
    In the Utility project I have created one apache beehive jms control. I am using this control inside the message driven bean application. I haven't got any issues during the development and deployment phase with the beehive control. But during runtime the apache beehive jms control is not getting instantiated and the mdb application is throwing the null pointer exception when the EJB container try to execute the methods on the control instance. I have used the declarative programming model to create the control instance inside the mdb application.
    I am using the weblogic 10.3 server for testing and I have created the 10.3 weblogic+workshop domain. By default it has the beehive libraries deployed.
    Can somebody help me out to resolve this issue?

  • Message Driven Bean (MDB) for AQ Queue cannot start

    I am working on the creating a message driven bean in Managed OC4J 10.1.3.0 to consume messages from AQ Queue. I am using a Oracle AS generic JMS connector and a resource adapter to create a message listener for the MDB.
    I am able to make successful connections to the AQ and also consume messages, but if i try to start the MDB using the Oracle Application Server Web Admin console, the MDB fails to start, i have to restart the entire OC4J instance to restart the MDB.
    The error on the Admin Console says "Failed to start MDB. Please see log for details." , but the problem is nothing is written to the log file.
    I have tried setting the logging level in web admin console to FINER but still no new errors are written to the log file. I have checked the opmn logs, instance logs as well the home logs.
    Please help, since this issue will further help us decide whether we need to go with the implementation or not.

    As far as I know XMLType JMS messages are not supported when using OJMS. They might be for OC4J 10.1.3, but I thought it's an AQ limitation rather than an OC4J one.. To be sure you might just log a TAR on Metalink.

    "Your onMessage method should handle all exceptions. It must not throw checked exceptions, and throwing a RuntimeException is considered a programming error."
    The above sentence is from the JMS documentation.
    I will use a message driven bean for guarenteeing to send an email with some critical info in case of an unexpected system failure. Say I was not able to save into db some critical info, therefore I want to send that info to myself with a mail to be able to handle that situation manually. Now in case of failure I will send a message to a queue which contains the critical info, and a message driven bean will listen for the message and send email to me. But what if the message driven bean fails ? If I am to handle any exceptions on my onMessage method, how will the messaging system be able to redeliver that message ? It seems to me the message will not remain in the queue anymore(I have consumed it) ?
    Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

    You can configure your queue to guarantee delivery. If you use JTA you can also make it transational, so the message is put back on the queue in the event of failure. Your configuration should also include max retries and a failure queue to make sure you don't get stuck in an infinite loop where a message can never be processed.
    Which app server are you using? WebLogic makes it pretty easy to set these config parameters.

  • Message Driven Bean Concurrency

    I am working with message-driven beans (MDB). My understanding was that
    these beans would read and execute concurrently. My tests show they do
    not. I have setup a single MDB which contains the following trivial
    implementation of onMessage...

    Now I have a little test application that throws ten messages into the
    queue. Each message is consumed from the queue SEQUENTIALLY which is
    not my understanding of concurrent processing. So in all sending ten
    messages to the queue each message is processed in turn taking 100 seconds
    for the whole thing to complete instead of 10 MDB instances all chewing on
    a different message and the whole thing would complete in roughly 10
    seconds.
    Is there a setup step that I have missed? I have bumped the
    default.properties file messagebean.pool.size=30 from its default of 3.
    It does create 10 bean instances, what for I don't know...

    Message beans are used for asynchronous calls, meaning that the container decides in what order to execute them. If you want to achieve concurrent calls consider using Session Beans.

  • Is Message Driven Beans Supported in iAS 6.5?

    Hello Everybody,
    Admin guide of iAS 6.5 speaks about using Message driven beans (mdb). It also says that iAS 6.5 supports EJB 1.1 specification. But, EJB 1.1 specification doesnt support mdbs. Only EJB 2.0 does this. Then how come iAS 6.5 supports mdb, when it says that it is EJB 1.1 complaint and not EJB 2.0 complaint.
    Please clear this doubt for me.

    This is what provided in the Developer guide. I have just read it.
    "iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition 6.5, provides support for deploying message-driven beans. This implementation is based on the EJB 2.0 specifications,
    and is for developer use only. The message-driven bean infrastructure in this release has not been tested in a production environment."

    We want to be able to use B2B to send messages to a JMS queue and then process messages from B2B using a Message Driven Bean. Is this supported.

              is started at the same Host that runs the WLS Server too.
              And the QueueConnectionFactory (QCF) is configured to TRANSPORT(BIND).
              In my configuration should be two WLS Servers and one JMS Queue (MQS) with the
              Queuemanager.
              A Message Driven Bean is deployed on both WLS Servers wich should get the Messages
              of this Queue.
              If one of the two WLS Servers fails the other WLS Server with the corresponding
              MDB should get the Messages of the
              MQSeries Queue.
              If the QCF is configured to TRANSPORT(Client) the Message Driven Bean can't start
              and the following Exception is thrown:

  • Message Driven Bean and transaction handling

    We are using container managed transactions with MDB's running on OC4J version 10.1.2. We have two database serveres, both running Oracle 10g.
    The MDB consume messages from the AQ-database through JMS (connected to a JDBC datasource registered as "jdbc/OracleAQDS").
    The MDB onMessage() code update the second database, using a JDBC datasource registered as "jdbc/OracleDBDS".
    We need atomic behaviour - if the MDB enforce a roll-back we want the updates aginst the second database to be rolled-back as well.
    (1) Should we use XA-datasources since AQ and DB runs on two different servers or do the OC4J container "magically" provide two-phase-commit for us?
    (2) If the MDB does a roll-back we would like to add an error record to a database table. Can we configure a third datasource and prevent if from beeing part of the container managed MDB roll-back?

    I am having a problem using the @RunAs annotation in a message driven bean.
    I would like the code in my onMessage() method to be executed with a specific role/user, so I want to use the @RunAs annotation to achieve this.

    It seems as though the @RunAs annotation has no effect. Although I specified the role TestRole (mapped to the user TestUser), the code still seems to be executed by user anonymous.
    Am I missing something?

    Both beans (the MDB on WLS 10 and the session bean on WLS 8.1) use container managed transactions.
    For the MDB I do not explicitly set the transaction attributes, so it should default to container managed transactions.
    For the stateless session bean I have specified the following in the ejb-jar.xml file:

    </ejb-jar>So as far as I understand it the transaction starts at the MDB (upon receival of a message). The transaction for the remote call to the stateless session bean (in the onMessage() of the MDB) is included in the transaction of the MDB and gets committed when the onMessage() method finishes and the transaction of the MDB itself gets committed.
    Correct me if I'm wrong here.

    Hi, I need to develop a EJB 3.0 Message Driven Bean. The MDB has to work on a Oracle AQ using Oracle JMS. Is there any how-to document giving an example about this issue. Can you give an example how to create the JMS destination in OC4J (how to configure the Oracle JMS AQ in OC4j), issue the JMS destination via annotions (resource injection) in the MDB.     Check your ejb-jar.xml and see if it has the version of "2.1" there...
    If the application was depending upon EJB 3.0 annotations but it had a ejb-jar.xml that had version set to "2.1" and there was no oracle specific descriptor (orion-ejb-jar.xml) to designate it use the resource adapter; It would expect JMS destination and connection factory that is required for a JMS-MDB set in the ejb-jar.xml. So try to change the ejb-jar.xml to update the version to "3.0", OC4J would have parsed the annotation and combined the metadata with ejb-jar.xml and it would work.

    and I created a Message Driven Bean ,I used those Queue , and all things was OK
    But I wanted to setup a Topic and use it in this manner
    I created a Topic like previous steps for setup Queue

    Except in Step 3  ,I selected Topic instead of Queue
