CalDigit VR Firewire-software issues, disappears

I bought a CalDigit VR Firewire- 2 drive enclosure and put 2 WD Caviar Black 2tb drives in it.  I decided for my needs I wanted to just use the JBOD setting so that if there was ever a problem I could take the drives out and use them in an old SATA USB enclosure.
CalDigit has a dial to hardware format the disks to JBOD.  It showed both disks on my desktop so I loaded up one as backup to all my smaller disks.  The drive is hooked up to my iMac via FW 800.  After loading all my data to Drive 1, and backing up my computer info to Drive 2 via Carbon Copy Cloner, the drive started placing multiple folders on my Desktop with nothing in them, but with the same name as the drive.
Then I restarted my computer...and both drives disappeared from my desktop.  All those created folders with the Drive's names disappeared also.  In Disk Utilitiy, no disks again.  All my other Hard Drives, including the other FW800 drive I have that is daisychained out of the CalDigit is still on the desktop and able to be used, but BOTH CalDigit drives are missing.
What is my problem and is there a software solution that I can use to find the drives?  I have an iMac so I cannot use a card, even the card that CalDigit makes for FW 800.  I've restarted the drive and my computer and the drive is the only thing that continues to not show up.

Hmm, I hadn't really considered the fact that these were sort of on the cutting edge with Firewire at the time they were introduced. That would certainly explain their being somewhat temperamental about different connections (working with OS X's built in Firewire networking but not with my external hard drive). It also explains why my iBook has no problems whatsoever, having been introduced in September of 2000 by which time all then little kinks had likely been worked out.
Well, though it doesn't help me get the drive to connect via the Firewire ports on my machine, your anecdote does seem to point to the Blue and Whites simply having potential issues with various Firewire devices on their built in Firewire bus. If that's true, which would not surprise me at this point, then the solution would simply be to install a separate, modern Firewire controller, or in my case, continue using the drive with the machine over my USB 2.0 controller. At least I'm not doing something wrong .
I have been aware from the very start of messing with this machine that this particular model family consists of some VERY flaky beasts, but that seems to be what makes it fun for me .
Thanks for the B&W story. Like I said, it may not seem like much, but it has helped .

  • FIX: FireWire communication issue solved - What worked for me

After installing the iPod Updater 2006-01-10, I found that my FireWire devices (not just my iPod) no longer worked. After much messing about with all the suggestions I found online (none of which worked) I've managed to sort out the FireWire communication issues I had.
you can read about the exact issues I had here:
    http://forums.kustompcs.co.uk/showthread.php?t=35034
    and here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1562072
Unfortunately those looking for a quick fix will be disappointed, I had to:
    a) Send my iPod Mini back to Apple, which was promptly replaced
    b) Totally re-install Windows (including drive format)
    c) Borrow the install CD that came with my friends iPod, which had a later version of iPod Updater (2005-10-12) than the one I had on my install CD, but earlier than the dreaded 2006-01-10
If anyone needs this updater (as it's impossible to find an earlier one on Apple's website) drop me your email in here and I'll send you the web address to download it. This is basically a ZIP of the original CD, totally virus free (for those that are worried) and appears to work fine.
If Apple have an issue with this, then why don't you fix the link on your site to this updater; this is simply my response to the complete lack of response from Apple on this matter.
A quick note about the: 'connection rate=S100 ERROR'.
If you discover you have this error when you test your iPod in diagnostic mode; find out how to do this here:
    http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
Then it appears there is nothing you can do to fix this other than sending it back to Apple. No amount of restoring will solve it.
I hope this helps someone out there! I've yet to fix the issue with my LaCie drive (basically it needs sending back) which if anything proves that whatever screwed my system did something to the hardware on a low level, it wasn't a Windows software issue, because after re-installing it, I download SP2 and ALL the latest hotfixes, if that was the cause, it would have done it again.
This leaves one culprit - the iPod Updater 2006-01-10, as this was the only software I installed at the time both of my FireWire devices went down, avoid it like the plaque.

  • Strange Drive Behavior - Hardware or Software issue?

Our xServe has three drive bays. Bay 1 is the system drive, 2 is our file data and drive, 3 is has an empty 250 drive.
Over the network, users can access the file data, however when I attempt to open the hard drive at the server (by clicking on the icon) the window opens but it does not display all the contents. I get a spinning beach ball and am forced to relaunch the Finder. The same thing occurs with attached FW drives.
Disk Utility and Disk Warrior show the drives to be fine (although I'm not sure I completely trust the reports).
As a hardware test I swapped the data drive to bay 3 and the blank drive to bay 2. Clicking the bay 3 icon seemed to work initially until I tried to open bay 2 and got the spinning beach ball.
I have repaired permissions on all the drives.
It is not clear to me if it is a hardware or software issue. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this would be a great help.

Thanks for the reply, Camelot. This is a weird one.
I don't know the exact number of files, but it only totals 84gb out of the 120gb available. The amount of data hasn't significantly changed recently and this problem is a recent one.
I have let the beachball spin for several minutes and it doesn't resolve itself. I am afraid to let it go for much longer because I fear the data will get corrupted. Because of the external firewire drive issue as well, I don't have a recent back up .
I have backed up the data in its current state to other networked computers and am doing a random test of the files to see if there has been any corruption, but with so many files it is hard to say.
The whole thing makes me nervous, to say the least. I have years of troubleshooting desktop macs but the Xserve seems like a different beast so I'm wary of doing the usual types of troubleshooting. Guess it is time to call in the pros!
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Problem: Categories I've created under "MEMOS" on my Palm Desktop Software keep disappearing.....

    Hi,
I just posted about having just re-installed a verstion of Palm Desktop Software yesterday to see if it would alleviate the following problem, but right after my consultant left, it happened again, which it does infrequently and I don't understand it.
First, I use this software to keep track of mostly everything; addresses; Things to Do, Datebook, etc.  I also use it to write down important information.  I create an alpha category under the menu "new memo" such as Banking, or Accounts, or Passwords, or Computer Stuff, Doctors, etc.  A few days ago, I created one called Important Info which involves a legal log and I just started writing in it.  It was fine for 2 days.  Yesterday, I made an addition to it.  Then I wrote & sent a few E-mails, and later re-opened Palm and it wasn't there.  This has happened in the past where all my Computer Info disappeared or another category altho not often and I can't understand where it went or why?  I do back up and managed to copy & paste the info I had into a newly created category, ie. I could look in a backup I did 2 days ago to see if I can retrieve any info, but I want to do this with my consultant over the phone because, whenever my Palm Desktop Software completely disappears, I freak out@!! even tho she explained why and what I had to do.  But I don't trust myself, so i make any changes with her over the phone.
But, mainly, I just wonder WHY various categories have disappeared when I didn't do anything to change anything, and where it went to.  it's really a puzzle to me.  If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Trudi

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer an some possibilities as to why things just disappear.  Most of the time, I don't shut down my Mac, even though I should.  But I do on & off especially when it's slow of some function is not working.  Sometimes restarting it resolves the issue, not sure why.  But I'm sure at times I do leave applications open before I shut down, altho most of the time, I quit each application before doing so.  Sometimes not.  So that's a possibility.
I assume the file-save function for Palm is a  menu choice and I will do that each time I add any data on my Palm desktop, just to be sure.
I don't understand yet how to Export data from Palm Desktop to a folder on the desktop - but I will read the article to be sure.  Noone seems to understand why this just happens with a category gone missing from my MEMOS feature.
Thank you for your useful information.

  • Having software issues, MBP mid 2012 won't boot

I recently had my MBP fail to boot, it would only load to a flashing folder with a question mark on it. I've had many suggestions as to what could be causing it, and so far I've disproven a couple. It isn't an issue with the hard drive, as I've run the extensive hardware test and everything checked out fine. Also, I took it in to geek squad since I had a membership with them and they also said the hardware was fine. They checked the SATA interface wire and it also checked out okay. They said that it was a software issue that was unavoidable, so they backed up my hard drive, wiped it clean, did something that they call "removing excess security titles," put the data back on my laptop and gave it back. It worked fine for all of 6 hours (6 total, only 1 hour of use) and then crashed again. The blinking "?" folder appeared again. Also, when I boot with the option key held, or command + R and then enter disk utility, my hard drive still does not appear in the startup manager or the disk utility window that usually lists hard drives found. "Macintosh HD" does not appear anywhere, and neither does "Recovery HD". The only drive I can get to show up is my external drive that I use for time machine. this means that I cannot select the drive (Macintosh HD) that I wish to place my time machine backup onto. Please let me know if anyone else has had this issue, and let me know if there are any suggestions on how to resolve this issue (preferred without taking it to apple store, dont have any near me.) Thanks in advance.
I posted a related question yesterday, so if you would like some more background info on the matter, you can read this one as well.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/26090958#26090958

Resolved this issue myself, and have decided to never trust Geek Suqad with any of my tech again. The issue was simply a faulty SATA cable. I didnt buy an external enclosure, but I did get a friend to let me pop the hood on his MBP and swap SATA's for a couple minutes. It booted perfectly to my desktop without any lag.
Reasons why Geek Squad will never see me again...
    1. They charged me $80 for a data backup when I could have easily done that myself at home.
    2. They misdiagnosed my problem as a "software issue." Gave it back and issue wasnt fixed.
    3. Took it back in and they misdiagnosed it again. Since they determind the HDD was fine, they automatically      assumed it was the logic board and wanted to charge me $500-$600 on the spot to ship it to repair facilities and      have it fixed.
    4. A 19 year old kid equipped with Google and Youtube (me) was able to diagnose, confirm, and repair something      in 1.5 hours that they couldnt even correctly diagnose in 4 days of working on it.
5.That "removed excess security titles" thing I mentioned... Yeah all they did was go into my applications and      delete one of my antivirus apps and my battery health app. They said that sometimes viral protection apps can      compete with one another and cause damage. That makes absolutely no sense to me!!
Needless to say, NEVER trust your computers with Geek Squad. They can't even correctly diagnose a faulty WIRE.
Lesson Learned: Always take Apple products to Apple technicians regardless of discounts elsewhere.

  • PC Card not recognized - hardware or software issue?

    Hello All,
this is my first post to this forum. I own a PowerBook G4 (late 2005) since February 2006, but still do consider myself being new to the world of Mac.
Most questions in this forum get good and detailed answers. That's why I hope someone here can help me with some issue regarding my PowerBooks PC Card slot. Thanks in advance for reading this.
I can't get some special PC Card to work. I'm not sure if it's an hardware or a software problem. For now, I guess it's an hardware issue with the PC Card slot. Regarding this, my Apple Service Provider told me, they will charge me a fee of 90 (Euro-)bucks, if their result of checking the PowerBook is, that the PC Card slot has no hardware damage and needs no repair. I'd like to have some more certainty before paying this for no reason.
    Some facts:
    * The PC Card is an Option GlobeTrotter HSPDA 7.2 READY DataCard
    * This data card proved to work well in a linksys WRT54G3G router
    * I installed a vendor specific driver/kernel extension/whatever that came with this card
    * When the data card is inserted, it seems to get power from the pc card slot, since some lights on it start to flash
    * At the same time a message occurs in system.log:
'Unable to create cardbus nub for socket 0'
    * The card +does not+ appear in System Profiler
Provided that a pc card slot works correctly: Does system profiler at least displays an entry in section 'PC Cards', even if a certain card is not supported?
I'd like to ask you to tell me what you think. Please make a guess, if it's an hardware or a software issue, and let me know for what reason.
    Thank you!

    Hi eww,
thank you, any help/hint/idea is appreciated, cause I ran out of ideas myself.
I bought the card from a company called nova media: http://www.novamedia.de/epages/e_produkte_gt_hsdpamac.html. Novamedia develops drivers and connectivity software for those data cards by Option, and sell them bundeled with hardware. So I'm pretty sure this card basically works on PowerBooks. Their support answered several of my questions, and even developers got involved, but at the end they couldn't say for sure if it's their drivers or my PowerBooks fault. They never had this kind of error before.
Entry 'PCI Cards' in System Profiler shows 5 devices, no matter if the card is inserted or not:
    Entry 1 ... is a network controller
Entry 2 ... Card: TXN,PCIXXXX-00, Type: cardbus, Bus: PCI, Slot: PC Card
    Entry 3-5 ... USB20 devices
I had a look at the darwin source code (http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/tarballs/apsl/IOPCCardFamily-45.tar .gz) for the cardbus stuff and even found the log statement, but beyond that, got no clue from it. Unfortunately I'm neither a C programmer nor a device driver expert.
I guess, the best thing is to bring the PowerBook to my Apple Service Provider now. I'll leave a message here in 1 or 2 weeks what the results were. Currently I need my PowerBook very bad and can't do without it for several days.

  • Headphone jack no longer working - How to test if it is a hardware or software issue?

Hi, my headphone jack fairly suddenly stopped working. The speakers and the sound are fine, but when I plug my headphones in nothing plays. I see that the computer does recognize that headphones are plugged in, and it does change it to "headphones" instead of "speakers" under sound properties.
I don't remember installing any particular updates, but I did recently swap out my 4GB RAM to an 8GB stick. Not sure if the tech shop did something that might have ruined it. Does anyone know of a way that I can test whether it's a software issue or a hardware one?
    thanks

    Hi @svltn,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I saw your post regarding your concern about the audio jack not working. There is a good chance that is it not a software issue because then you won't get any sound from the speakers either. You can try setting the headphones as the default audio device if you haven't already. This third-party link will show you how. It is for Windows 7 but if you are using Windows 8 just search for Control Panel from your main tile page and the rest is the same from there.
Have you tried a different set of headphones or the current headphones in another device to see if it is the headphones themselves that are broken? I don't think it is the RAM but if you still have the 4GB RAM put that back in and see if the headphones start working again.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

My iPhone 4s will not charge in car or truck. It would appear after research that this is a software issue with ios5. Will there ever be a patch to correct this infuriating problem?!!!

Mine charges just fine, as does everyone's iPhone 4S that I know. Apple even sells a number of car chargers that are certified to work:

Perhaps there is a problem with your charger or the outlet you're using in your car/truck.

  • Keyboard and trackpad unresponsive - software issue

Hey guys, first time on the forum but I have quite a severe problem.
After a forced shutdown (stupid I know) when I try to use my MacBook the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive (even the caps lock light doesn't work). I know this to be a software issue because I tried using a Linux boot disk to rescue my data, however I couldn't find the HD using this method. I have also tried using a USB mouse but again to no avail. Does anyone have a fix? If not any way to backup my data before trying to reinstall leopard? (I am running the latest leopard update).
    Thank guys.

I am having a similar problem, all except i didn't force shut down. i cant backtrack to the ver. from my install disk because i cant open it due to the fact my mouse and keyboard don't work. i've tried a usb key/mouse combo and they don't work either. any suggestions would be appreciated

  • Keyboard does not connect - have narrowed to a software issue as it works in safe mode, but do not know how to resolve the software issue

I was in the process of connecting a Razer Blackwidow USB keyboard to my iMAC and something went wrong.
The new keyboard doe not respond and now my bluetooth keyboard does not work either. No connectivity whatsoever.
I've tried a number of things, including resetting the PRAM / NVRAM and SMC (interesting that the computer responds to the keyboard commands that are required to reset the PRAM). I also checked all the universal access setting to make sure nothing was interfering with normal keyboard operation.
btw, blutooth seems to think the keyboard is connected I get a gree light. I can even go through the process of unpairing and pairing and it allows me to type in the numberical code to pair the keyboard, but after that, it still does not work.
When I start the machine in safe mode, the keyboard works fine. So I've narrowed this down to a software problem. I tried to go to another user account to see if it's just associated with the current user, but since I have no keyboard connection at all, I can't type in a password, so that's no good.
I've eliminated a number of applications that I have recently installed (including the Razer set up app) that might interfere with keyboard operation, but no luck.
Any suggestions on how to go about tracking down this software issue?
    Thanks - musikman7

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I have a 17" Macbook pro with flickering red and cyan(blue) lines across the screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem.

I purchased my Macbook (17") through a certified apple tecnition in August 2012, it was refurbished and the motherboard was completely replaced. I do a lot of photo editing, but I have been unable to do so because of the red vibrating lines that interrupt my screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem. I brought the computer back to the technition I purchased it from and he said that it was a problem with my fan, so I have two new fans but the issue is still occuring. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. Does anyone have any information on this issue?
Here is an image of the issue
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/67839707@N08/8884847081/

I recommend having your Mac serviced by someone competent. A force sufficient to "blow apart" the fans was clearly excessive and may have damaged the display cable, as well as any number of other problems.
Dust is properly cleaned with a vacuum, preferably one designed for computer service, and they are not cheap.
Compressed air should never be used. It just blows dust everywhere, often into places where it can no longer be removed.

  • Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?

Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?

Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.
