CallableStatements and a result parameter.

Can someone help clarify something for me.
I am creating a stored procedure (I call it a function because it returns a value) in a database. Here's the procedure:

end;Now, when I'm using the CallableStatement, I am trying the format of {? = call MnemonicCodesViewGetDescription(?, ?, ?)}.
I am registering parameter 1 as an output parameter with registerOutputParameter with a datatype of Types.VARCHAR. I then set the input parameters with the setXXX methods. I'll execute the call and then use the getXXX method to get the result parameter.
Is this the correct way of doing things?

The whole reason I'm asking this question is it does not work with jConnect 5.5 but does work with Sybase's iAnywhere JDBC driver (which is like a JDBC-ODBC bridge) connecting to the same database jConnect failed on. It also works when I try it with an Oracle database using Oracle's thin JDBC driver.
I have been in contact with Sybase regarding jConnect not working and they are basically telling me that I have to use a select statement to get the result parameter from the procedure/function and the fact it does not work with the CallableStatement is not a bug. Like I just said, they want me to use a select statement like this: "select MnemonicCodesViewGetDescription('code', 'type', null);".
I have pointed them to the JDK docs talking about CallableStatements but so far they feel they are right and I'm wrong.
Is there any other documentation that might help me with this?
