Calling all tech's. Boot Problem.

Hi All,
I am in need of a little help please for one or all of you guru's. This is a problem I have been trying to resolve myself for about a month now, I don't want to take my computer into the shop because it has sensitive information on it. I would really appreciate any information or advice as I think I have covered all bases.
Problem: When turning on my iMac it chimes, goes to the grey/white screen with the apple symbol, about 5 - 10 seconds later the gear starts turning, it then hangs in this state for about 2 minutes with gear turning before turning off and starting all over again.
Suspected Problem: I have had similar problems before when using Target Disk mode to boot into a different partition as I am running a Windows partition seperatly, however by holding the keyboard Command or Option key I have been able to regain control and boot back into the Mac Partition which works fine. Therefore I suspect this is some kind of hard-disk failure.
Attempted Resolutions
I have tried all the command prompts I could find using the keyboard, i.e the PRAM reset, CD Boot, Target Disk Mode using external laptop etc. I think I tried at least 7 or 8 different key combinations with no success, it doesn't even acknowledge that I have given it any input.
The only thing that it did respond to was when I held down the mouse button it ejected the CD, other than that no input at all can be made.
I've tried plugging the keyboard into another computer to test it, it worked fine with full control as per normal.
I opened up the cover and had a look inside, couldn't see any abnormalities, I removed the battery for 10 minutes and re-installed it jut for good measure, as I remembered when I had a PC it used to reset a few things. I also vacuumed out any dust in the USB ports.
I'll take any help I can get.

Ok,
Thanks for everyone help so far, unfortunatly I couldn't get anywhere no control what so ever, so I purchased a replacement internal hard-drive and now it works fine. However a couple of new issues have arisen that I require more help with.
Before the great crash I had an external hard-drive which was storing a lot of backed up files etc, now when I try and open the Volume I get the error message "The Folder "volumename" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges". I've tried a few sudo commands in Terminal but it hasn't done anything, tried changing the permissions in the Info Page but they are all set to Custom and I can't alter them.
Secondly now that I have my system up and running and a spare hard-drive with all my important files next to it, is there anyway I can repair the permissions with it out of my hard-drive, i.e is there some kind of cable of something to get it talking with my now functional computer (long shot I know).
Appreciate any help with these new problems, thanks.

  • Unique error - calling all tech genius

I am begging any Tech Genius out there to help me out. I have a 3-year old (10GB) Ipod which after the 7.0 upgrade started giving me the message "ITunes cannot read the contents of the Ipod 'Podcasts.' Go to the summary tab in Ipod preferences and click Restore this Ipod to factory settings."
The problem is that as soon as I hit Ok to this message it disconnects my Ipod from the computer, not letting me get to the Ipod preferences page. Though I have all my music on my computer, most of the songs from my Ipod has been erased and I am not able to sync at all.
I am tired and exhausted of trying to fix it. Among them, I tried to go back to ITunes 6, resetting my Ipod etc. I will be eternally grateful if someone can help.
    Thanks a million.

    Hey ITried,
Try putting the iPod into disk mode: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 you should be able to restore it from there.

  • Calling all true Powerbook geeks-problem w/hard drive (sort of)

Ok, here's the deal. My old PowerBook G4 (manufactured in 2001) has a PMUnit that had pretty much gone to h in a hand basket so... I removed its hard drive and sold the whole thing to someone for them to play with/fix. I tried to put the hard drive in a case I bought at Radio Shack so I could xfer the stuff that was on that drive and then erase and zero the drive out (with hopes, of course, that I could at least make the little drive into a nice small external extra drive to use for this or that).
I got the data off the drive fine and the drive seems fine BUT... here's the deal - it doesn't quite fit into the standard case for this size drive. The Mad Dog case, for example, at Radioshack which is typically used, I understand, for these size of drives, is just a hair too small... sort of though it would fit save for the little black bolt type things on the side of the hard drive (which prevent the thing from slipping nicely into the case) and the screws for the board in the case which don't really sit flush after you screw them in through the drives screw holes. So - people with more experience than I here: what am I doing wrong? People on Craigslist said this case should fit these drives without a problem and many there say they've done this very thing.
I know someone here has probably done this. It's my drive and I want to be able to still use it even though the PowerBook itself is gone. Help!

AH: I hope you haven't already stripped the unusually soft heads of the screws by trying to use the wrong type or size of screwdriver to remove them. That would leave both you and the PB's next owner with a problem, for which the solution might be here (note the "might"):
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G4-Aluminum-15-Inch-Screw-Set/IF154-022
But N.B. the following note on that page:
"Includes all screws except those from hard drive bracket and display assembly."
    (boldface added)
You might have to call and find out whether the screws not included in the kit are the very ones you need, or whether those are something different.

  • Calling all script experts - Wierd problem with a previously perfect script

    Hi,
As script which used to work fine is now causing me big problems.
The line that is causing the problem is highlighted in the script editor as:
tell application "Finder" to set file_List to every file of entire contents of master_Folder -- Obtains all related files.
On running the script I get the following message:
Finder got an error: Can't make every file of entire contents of alias "Atlas Mac-Mini:Users:design:Desktop: TESTpictures - for script:Landscape copy:" into type reference.
As I said the script used to work fine, A couple of members of this forum have tried to rewrite the script for me (thanks to them) but I'm still gettig the same message. I'm wondering is there something wrong with my system (which otherwise works fine).
I'd appreciate any help and advice on what may be going wrong.
    Thanks, Ray
In case it helps, here's the full script (which adds the file's path to the filename):
set master_Folder to (choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder for filename processing") -- Select folder.

    Hello RaymondTomin,
I don't see any reason for Finder to throw such an error in the said line. Perhaps something is wrong in your system.
Try the following test scripts. If they fail on any folder you choose, I'm afraid something is surely wrong in your system, not in your script code.
(If they fail, create new user account and try them in it to narrow down the problem cause. Also try repairing disk and/or repairing permissions.
And it might help as well to clear some caches by using, e.g. Onyx:

Or even to re-apply OSX's Combo Updater:

  • Calling all tech gurus

I've done several tests with the antenna. I've put a death grip on the bottom where the antenna is located and the signal does drop from 5 bars to ZERO in about 30 seconds. The crazy thing is the call quality doesn't change. I'm getting ZERO bars during the test, but the call seems as if I have 5 bars. My question to you folks that are far more technical than I am, doesn't this appear to possibly be a software issue like Apple first reported? If it's hardware, then I would think the call would drop but it doesn't. Also, I've done this test about 10 times and all the results are the same.

The way bars are displayed on the iPhone IS flawed. They update very slowly and do not give you an accurate measurement of signal. Using bars is not a practical way to determine your signal (at this point, anyway). Dropping calls, on the other hand, DOES say that you have lost signal. Users that are measuring their signal in bars and not in call quality and dropped calls will find themselves mistaken.

  • IPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them

iPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them. Signal is strong and call quality (me hearing the other) is still very good but it looks as if I’m going on mute while I’m not muting my iPhone. When dropping the call and re-dialing it works fine again. It’s a brand new iPhone 5S but it now happened already 4 or 5 times in 2 days.
It feels like a hardware/iOS problem and not a network issue. It happend with iOS7.03 but I just see 7.0.4 is available so will install that one now.
    Thanks in advance for feedback
    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hello Jeff,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the audio on your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if the audio on my iPhone was not working unless using speaker phone.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this:

  • The mother of all re-boot problems.

    Hi All,
I've got that re-boot problem that seems very common but the solutions out there aren't working.
Basically the computer will turn on, chime, grey screen comes up, shortly after apple logo, and then the gear starts turning, about 2 minutes later restart, process repeats.
    I've tried.
    - Booting from CD/Recovery Disk - Won't happen
    - A million different key combinations, I've read about 10 different posts on key combinations and tried them all, including PRAM reset, boot from different source, etc.
Basically it's like my keyboard commands aren't being heard at all, but to test if the keyboard was working I pressed the caps lock button and the light was going on and off which tells me its powered. The only kind of input I have been able to acheive is by holding the mouse button down to eject the CD, other than that I have absolutly no control what so ever.
    Would like any insight.
    Cheers,
    Jarrod.

    HI,
If you've had your iMac for less then one year then it's covered by the one year limited warranty.
Take it to an Apple store or an Apple certified repair provider.

  • After a recent update, the Bookmarks menu has an extra folder called "All Bookmarks" which appears to be a copy of the bookmarks. It is causing problems and how do I fix it?

I recently updated Firefox. The Bookmarks menu shows a new menu item called "All Bookmarks". It appears to be a copy of the bookmarks. When I try to add a new bookmark, the All Bookmarks folder is the only one shown in the dialog. I tried deleting the All Bookmarks folder, but then nothing is shown in the dialog when I try to add a new bookmark.
If I do add a new bookmark, it is put under the All Bookmarks folder and does not show up under the top-level item I want it under. Any ideas about what I can do to fix this.
The update went normally without my intervention.
    Thanks

I was able to fix the problem after following the bookmark backup and restore procedures on the following page:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite#Problems_limited_to_bookmarks
I also had to restart Firefox so that the "Bookmark This Page" dialog would show the normal bookmarks.
    Thanks.

  • Mac Mini boot problem - Debugger called: panic ?

after i push the start button, the first page shows "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." it was written in six languages... secondly, the page i show in this picture appear for just a few second, but i manage to snap a picture on it using my ipad2. after that it repeats the same thing from the first page again and again for several times until it shut down by itself... i do not know what could possibly wrong with that, before it happen i was just finished installing Xcode from itunes store. please help me, i just bought this mac mini 2 weeks ago.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • 1st series iMac G5: Booting problems, kernel panics, waking from sleep...

Specifications of the iMac described: 1.8 Ghz, 1GB, 80GB, 64 Mb Nvidia VRAM, Airport, 10.5.5
Back in August 2004 my dad bought us kids an iMac G5 for ‘family use’. It had a fresh install of 10.3.5 on it and compared to the (1999) iMac G3 it replaced it was amazingly fast.
The iMac never showed any signs of probable issues, until we decided to upgrade to Leopard in January 2008. Initially, this upgrade was only meant to be able to sync with the latest iPod nano (who demanded a newer version of iTunes).
After the installation the first thing I noticed was a high CPU usage, the machine seemed slower than ever and that with 1 Gb of RAM (the minimum sys. req. for Leopard are 512 Mb of RAM). Anyway, then the real thing started, it wouldn’t turn on anymore. We brought it to an Authorized Apple Reseller, the Tech department said the Logic board had failed. The costs of the fix weren’t the worth the computer anymore, so...end of story. The iMac was indeed one of the bad series, although it hadn’t any swollen capacitors.
My dad already made up his mind and bought himself a Macbook. He then told me that if I was able to get the broken iMac fixed, I could keep it. And so, I bought an ‘as-is’ logic board on Ebay. Last weekend I installed it, and it actually seemed to work! Yet, the problems are during the startup: the first thing I see is a screen full with horizontal lines flickering all the time, like an old TV with bad signal. Mostly it won’t boot and I get the message to restart the computer (kernel panic, I got dozens of logs already!). Sometimes it got stuck during booting (grey apple screen with gear in the middle) making the fans go crazy (after a while) and sounding what others describe as a ‘jetliner taking off’ sound. Sometimes the screen remains black. Generally it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to start up properly. Maybe it’s just me but it seems like when the computer has warmed up a little (by turning on and off on and on) starting up gets smoother. I mean the startup screen suffers from less horizontal flickering lines.
During the use of Leopard, I again get high CPU usage, especially when I use multiple programs at the same time, or when starting multiple programs. My iStat Pro said once that the fans were running at 4700 rpm and the heat of the CPU was about 70 Celsius. If I really want to **** my iMac off I should play a racing game. That just totally freaks him out! These problems could probably be solved by adding more RAM. Right?
The iMac also has a sleep problem. Sometimes after lets say an hour or so, you can’t get it out of sleep mode (by manipulating keyboard and/or mouse, the sleep light stops, but the screen stays off --> only solution is to restart). What happened to me once was that it slept so long that it just got into a deep sleep by turning itself off completely!
Here’s a list of what I tried so far:
    - Disk Utility: Resetting the permissions, no problems were found.
    - Resetting the SMU, both on the logic board itself as by pressing the power button 5 - 8 seconds, no improvements.
    - Resetting the PRAM, no improvements.
    - Did the Hardware test of the original install CD, nothing was found, all good.
    - Did Archive and Instal, this actually messed my system entirely, cause it wouldn't boot at all and when starting up from the Leopard installation DVD it wouldn't recognize the Macintosh HD.
    - Did Archive and Instal with the original disks, this disk did recognize Macintosh HD and so I installed the original system, 10.3. Booting problems and those flickering lines are still there though.
Next phase will be erase and install, but first I want to know what you guys think about all this.
Oh eh, One more thing; The guys at Applecare (phone support) told me that the replaced logic board was also out of warranty and so they couldn’t help me. But as the man on the phone was kind, he told me to go look for a special ‘driver’ on the net. He said that the driver should be able to resolve some of the issues described. He said that I had to give in the name of the LB on google and look for results. Is this bogus? Because I haven’t found anything useful on google so far. What’s the name (rather than a number) of the LB in the first place?
I hope you guys can give me some answers. I'm kinda desperate. But I still feel there's hope...

The symptoms of a flakey power supply are sleep problems and you have done all the right things as far as resetting the SMU and PRAM. Your CPU usage can be tracked by going to Utilities>Activity Monitor - look and see what is hogging the memory. The flickering lines could also be an optical system going south.
The other thing you can do is run DiskWarrior or TechToolPro to see if you have corrupted directories. Preferential Treatment will let you check for corrupted preferences.

    *Soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy
OS: Windows XP home, service pack 2
    *Lite-on IT dvd-rom drive
    *floppy disk drive
I also have 3 case fans spinning away in a marginally large Chieftec Dragon tower.
The parts I marked with an asterisk (*) are parts that I removed from my old rig and re-used.
I'll try to give a clear rundown of my problem and the steps I've taken so far.
3 days ago I acquired the P45 Neo and installed it into my system, together with the 8800GT videocard. I was still using my old PSU, a Chieftec 360watt. This PSU served me well for 7 years, but it was starting to build up noise while trying to keep up games on my old rig.
I had some trouble getting the system to boot, I tried changing some of the 4 pins wires going to the hard drive and the dvd drive. I don't know if it was luck or if I managed to divide the load properly for the system to boot. But I succeeded into booting up, got into the bios and eventually installed WinXP.
As soon as it was time to install the videocard drivers, it stopped responding. I assumed it was a power issue, since I could only install the 20pin and 4pin cpu, but my Chieftec PSU didn't have a 24pin plug to the mobo - and it needed replacing anyway! So I bought a new 500watt PSU that had all the required plugs and more wattage.
I installed the new PSU, checked every connection and pressed the power button. 'Lo and behold, the computer starts up. I install the videocard drivers and it proceeds with no problems. I try to install the soundcard, but the cd says I don't have one installed. I fix that by going to the System list and install the drivers from there. I install a firewall. By then I have successfully rebooted the computer 3 or 4 times. I decide all is well and turn off the computer. But I realize I wanted to check up something on the internet.
I press the powerbutton. The PC power light go up for just a fraction of a second. I can see the blue LED of one of the case fans switching on just as briefly - then it goes out. The computer keeps trying to turn itself on. It looks like it's hickupping to try and boot!
I turn off the PSU power on the back-side because the computer keeps trying and wait for a bit. After 10 minutes, it still doesn't work. I leave the computer for a bit and return an hour later. The computer then starts up with no problems. I turn it off after a few hours, do a reset, start it up, no problems. But then the next day it happens again.
It's pretty tough figuring out what the problem is because it looks..almost random. I considered it could be a heat issue, but sometimes it *does* start up just after it's been turned down. Checking the bios shows no strange temperature shifts.
Hope anyone can help me, because I do not want to go back to my old Asrock mobo

While powered down I cleared the cmos data, removed the Dane Elec DDR2 module and set the bios to optimized defaults. Computer restarted to WinXP with no problems (it has been off the whole night). I shut down WinXP, wait a few moments and then turn the computer back on. Alas, it won't start and starts hick-upping. I turn power off at the PSU again, so it stops.
Now I try switching out the Kingston module instead. By now the computer has been off for 10 min (while I write this entry on laptop). I press the power button on the PSU and then the power button on the front. There is a short pause, lasting a second. The computer turns on, longer now, but it only lasts 2 whole seconds before it turns off again and goes on again (I believe now you can call it powercycling). It repeats this process until I shut off the PSU.
I check to see if I have installed it properly and try again but it starts powercycling again.
15 min pass, I put the Kingston module back in, press the power button and voila, this time it does start. WinXP shows up, no problems. I leave it on for a bit and then shut down. And when I press the power button again - the feeling of dread returns, when it starts hickupping again.
I'm going to see if I can install one of the memory modules from my housemate. Then hopefully tommorrow, I'm going to try if I can test a different PSU, since I see someone else on the forum - who recently posted, has the exact same power supply and also has boot problems, coincidence... or not ^^;.

  • Very disappointed after 7 calls to Tech support!

I bought My Lenovo G560 on April 2011 and have since then had to call tech support  7 times, out of which in four of those occasions the tech support rep asked me to use the One Key recovery to solve the problem. When they checked my warranty, they had in file that it had expired.  Luckily, I had my receipt.  When I called back again, they asked me to do the recovery one more time.   Seriously?  You have in your system that a laptop had to be recovered four times and you still ask your client to hit the one key recovery again?  Isn't that supposed to be your last resort??  I am so disappointed at this company!
I bought the Lenovo, because I thought that it had to be good with IBM behind it, but my experience with this laptop has been awful.  The last time it stopped working,  I was in the middle of a job, so I had to run to the store to buy another computer so that I could finish it.  Now, I would just like to have this computer fixed or replaced.  Can someone, please, do something about it?

Back in December I was told Lenovo would contact me to resolve this issue in a couple of days.  I am still waiting for that contact.  My computer is still not working properly.
I have invested more than 20 hours with CSR's by now and plenty more on my own, plus the many headaches that come from having your computer stop working in the middle of a task.  This is a shame.  I would certainly not recommend this product to anyone; not because the computer is bad (a lemon can come out of any company), but because Lenovo has done nothing about the issue and every rep just asks me to hit the recovery button.  I am thinking that the problem lies in that the company does not give the power to the reps to really help the customers.  Reps are just asked to be pleasant, but not given the power to really do what is right for customers (and ultimately the brand).
For the last time, will Lenovo be doing anything regarding this issue?  It's been going on now for several months and still not one person has done anything about it. This computer is a lemon.  We removed all programs and, as per the recommendation of several tech support reps, have hit the recovery button three times (thus erasing all programs and having to invest time in backups and reinstalls, etc).  This computer is not even a year old.  Still, all techs are very pleasant and nice as can be, but no one has taken responsibility for the issue and done what is necessary to fix the laptop

NOTICE: Can not read the pool label from '/pci@0,0/pci8086,25f8@4/pci111d,801c@0/pci111d,801c@4/pci108e,286@0/disk@0,0:a /pci@0,0/pci8086,25f8@4/pci111d,801c@0/pci111d,801c@4/pci108e,286@0/disk@1,0:a'

    rebooting...
It looks like the solaris 10 os cannot find zfs filesystem and keeps on rebooting in normal solaris os mode, but when I go to safe mode and type: zfs list, I can see zfs rpool (mirrored) file system and cannot see the zfs spool (raid z) file system, any ideas on how i can fix the boot problem and get zfs spool back in the safest way possible?...

Same problem here with actual recomended patch set.

What the hell happened to the bootsektor or the pool or what ever?
