Calling back with empty distribution points list : Local DP vs Remote DP

Hi all,
I am an issue getting remote offices to pull packages (A task sequence) from their onsite DP. They keep pulling from the main DP in the datacenter.
How do I ensure the mainDP is not considured 'LOCAL' but it is 'REMOTE' and the local office DP is 'LOCAL'?
Here is my setup:
SCCM 2012 with DP / MP set in Datacenter: mainDP
3 Offices up the country with local DP Server: OfficeDP1 / OfficeDP2 / OfficeDP3 (green under monitoring and my packages show as verified content)
SCCM Boundaries set via "AD Site". This matches our AD Structure. In AD Sites and Services, each site has a unique IPv4 addressing (AD Address Prefix: Office1 - 192.168.100.0/25 & Office 2 - 192.168.101.0/25 etc)
Each SCCM Boundary has a boundary group that reflects the local office
The locationservices file on an office PC has:
Current AD Site of machine is Office1
Calling back with the following distribution points
Distribution Point='http://mainDP/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/PR10005D', Locality='LOCAL', DPType='SERVER', Version='7804', Capabilities='<Capabilities SchemaVersion="1.0"><Property Name="SSLState" Value="0"/></Capabilities>',
Signature='http://mainDP/SMS_DP_SMSSIG$/PR10005D', ForestTrust='TRUE',
I would expect it to say http://Office1DP/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/PR10005D
This is how I configured my separate packages / programs:
Package A and Package B:
Data Source Tab: disabled Binary diff replication
Data Access Tab: nothing ticked
Distribution Settings: ticked - distribute the content for this package to pref dist points
Program 1 and 2 respective config:
Advanced tab: ticked - Allow this program to be installed...deployed
This is settings when the TS deployed agaisnt Device Collection
Distribution Points Tab: Nothing ticked (no fallback configured nor use remote distribution point)
Deployment options dropdown: Download all content locally before starting task sequence

This may not be the answer you're looking for since you're doing boundaries differently.
This is how I have it setup and it works perfect.
1)  Do ip ranges for all boundaries
2)  Assign each boundary to a boundary group
3)  Add the remote dp as the site server in the boundary group
4)  Also make sure the main local dp also has a boundary group with all the ip ranges that don't have a remote dp.
I believe when you download something from software center, you can check the following log to see what download locations it finds.

    Hello
We are running sccm 2012 R2 cu0 and encounter a strange behavior regarding users not able to use the software catalog.
    Some background :
We setup primary site and 3 DPs while running sccm 2012 sp1, then upgrade ro R2, then cu0
then we setup 10 DPs and start deploying clients.
All Clients looks well configured using the "Configuration Manager". All packages are replicated onto those DPs (except ms updates so far)
Clients that are assigned to boundaries linked to the 3 DP made while running sccm 2012 sp1 are running smoothly. They can use the apllication catalog
The one that are assigned to site where dp have been build with R2 cu0 can't use catalog.
They all got this message in the :

Ad schema is ok, boundaries and boundary groups also.
I compare new DP vs "old" ones and there is no difference in the configuration.
I looked at some logs but didn't found any relevant information.
I also read all similar post but none looks "similar" to our configuration
If someone can "guide" me to troubleshoot this, it will be appreciate.
Feel free to ask for any information
    Thanks

    Hi,
Could you please use IP ranges instead of your boundary to test whether
    the clients could get DPs?
If this could work, there should be a problem with the boundary of AD sites.

  • What do you do when photos appear on iPhoto fine with preview, but show up back with an explanation point when selected?

What do you do when photos appear on iPhoto fine with preview, but show up back with an explanation point when selected?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Why doesn't customer service call back with answers?

I called to inquire about changing my plan.  i decided to simply keep the plan I had, but customer service had already taken me off my current plan.  I didn't know this.  They put me back on the plan but unknown to me without the 5 friends and family.  This was in March.   In April, of course I was going over my 700 min.  I called and  was put on a tempory plan to cover the overages but was told all would be back in May.  Well I still did not have my 5 friends and family!
So as of May 9th I have spoken to 10 people, including 2 managers, an Associate director and a resolution specialist, all were going to  do all they could.  It seemed the plan I had was a promotion, 5 friends and family with 700 min., and no longer available.  A form was sent to the off line"people".  This was not my doing.  I did not request to be taken off my plan.  I spoke to an associate director who scheduled a call back with me and gave me a number to call her back.  No call and the number had nothing to do with Verizon. Today I spoke to a Resolution Specialist,  "A man of his word." he said. He explained that my original plan was given to my by the loyalty "people" and there shouldn't be a problem getting back on it.  I will call you back before the end of the day.  The man of his word hasn't called back.  Have been a Verizon customer for at least 40 years! What is wrong with Verizon? I was angry before but now I am very, very angry.
Anyone know where to go from here?

Having your promotion removed is very upsetting crowhollow. I'm sorry you are still dealing with this issue and I would like to find out the status so we can get this resolved and  you can continue enjoying your service with us. Please send us a private message with your name and phone number. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • "Failed to connect to remote distribution point" on local machine

I have a new System Center 2012 R2 setup. I only have a single server with Configuration Manager, SQL, and Distribution Point all on the same machine.
The Configuration Manager Client Package is failing to load to the distribution point.

  • SCCM 2012 and SCCM 2007 Shared Distribution Points

I am building a new SCCM 2012 site (primary and 4 secondaries) besides a SCCM 2007 site (primary, 3 secondaries and 65 DPs).
I migrated all objects from SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 which worked well.
I migrated a client from SCCM 2007 to my SCCM 2012 environment and that worked well. Then i push some packages from SCCM 2012 to my migrated client which worked as well either.
Then I switch on the SHARED DISTRIBUTION option in the migration section and now my migrated SCCM 2012 client only can access the SCCM 2007 DPs and packages from SCCM 2012 DP can't be accessed anymore...in Software Center the packages will stay at 0% downloading....
Is that normal behavior after enabling shared DPs ?

Did you ever find a solution for this? I am experiencing the same issue.
I have an IP address range boundary for testing SCCM 2012. After enabling shared distribution option SCCM 2012 migrated boundaries from SCCM 2007. My test IP address range boundary has two boundary groups... One is the SCCM 2012 Boundary group
pointing towards the SCCM 2012 DPs. The 2nd is the automatically created "Boundary Group for SCCM 2007 distribution point."
With both of those in there I can only push SCCM 2007 packages to the SCCM 2012 clients. SCCM 2012 packages come back in the logs as "Calling back with empty distribution points list." If I remove the automatically created "Boundary Group for SCCM 2007 distribution
point" from the test IP boundary then SCCM 2012 clients will properly download from the SCCM 2012 DPs, but now the SCCM 2007 packages fail to download to the SCCM 2012 test clients.
I assume I have some kind of boundary issue but am at a loss of resolving it. Either that or I have the shared dp concept down incorrectly. Shouldn't I be able to have a boundary that has SCCM 2012 clients that uses the 2012 DP for 2012 content but the 2007
DP for 2007 content while I am migrating?
    Thanks for any help

  • Distribution Point Offline - how long before SCCM client connects to alternative DP?

Hi, I'm doing some testing on my SCCM 2012 setup and have been attempting to test distribution point resiliency and fall-back.
I have a single primary site with two distribution points. One is in the main datacentre and is in the same boundary group as the clients and tagged as fast connection. The 2nd DP is in the DR datacentre, in a separate boundary group (no client subnets are
in this group) and the distribution point has the allow failback checked.  Both DP's have the same content.
After shutting down/taking offline the main distribution point, I've then kicked of an install of a package on a W7 client. It attempts to download and stays in that state for as long as I leave it. Looking in the logs I can see both DP's returned to
the client (the DR tagged as REMOTE), it then attempts to connect to the main DP and just keeps retrying over and over.
I thought if it couldn't connect to the main DP it would then failback to the DR DP, but it doesn't appear to do this. Is there a timeout on this before it would fail back?
I'm also currently  trying adding the DR DP to the main boundary group and tagging the connection as slow so the main DP would still be used first. Again both DP's are returned to the client when installing software and the client attempts to connect
to the main DP over and over without using the DR DP which is online.
Is this normal behaviour or do I have a configuration issue?
    Appreciate your help.
    Carl

Hi, just to update on this thread, I raised a support call with Microsoft and the end result is that SCCM2012 clients wont fall back to an alternative DP where a DP is offline. The fall back is only for when content isn't on a DP. The 8hr timeout doesn't
appear to be in affect anymore.
What I have managed to get to work and test out is removing our production DP (also primary site server) from the production content boundary group, then clients will fall back to the DR DP as this is the only other DP available with content.
I've managed to perform the update to remove the site server from the boundary group while the primary site server is offline, by using a PowerShell script to connect to the SCCM provider on the DR site server (DP/MP/SUP) to perform the update as our site
database is off-box. This works well and the changes replicate to the SQL replica in DR that the DR MP uses and when clients failover to the DR MP they then begin using the DR DP and packages can be installed etc.
How funny, I just fixed this at a Client this week.
This is default client behavior as MS CSS probably told you, the client thinks the Distribution Point is coming back online soon so it waits, for good reasons. For some reason I keep thinking "7 days" not 8 hours, but maybe wrong.
I have a work around for this, it just requires a change to the Distribution Points DNS record. Head to the DNS server, find the record for the Distribution Point that is down, change the IP address to a different member server IP address, this will cause
the client, when it flushes it's DNS cache, to get an updated DNS record for the Distribution Point and it will try to connect to the Distribution Point using the changed IP address, which then induces what the client thinks is a severe error which makes it
go to the next Distribution Point in the list it got from the Management Point. Once you've recovered the Distribution Point and it is back online, change it's IP address back in DNS or just let the Distribution Point update its own DNS record when it boots
up (if configured to do so) and viola, you are back in business.
Test, test and test again before ever putting something from "the web" into your production environment. I just implemented this at a client to solve their issues with their DR procedure.

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Point without IIS

Hello. My environment is SCCM 2012 SP1. I need to set up distribution points on several Windows Server 2003 machines. These machines have certain security requirements. One of which is no IIS. In SCCM 2007, I was able to create DPs without installing IIS.
This prevented the use of BITS extensions but was acceptable. I cannot seemed to do the same with SCCM 2012.
As a test, I performed three steps to test a DP without IIS on a Windows Server 2003 machine 1) Made the primary server a local administrator on the Windows Server 2003 machine, 2) Installed RDC using the msrdcoob_x86.exe file, 3) in the admin console, I
created a new site system server with the distribution point role. I did not check allow it to install IIS to install/configure during the setup. The distribution point reports a successful installation status but I get three errors when I try to distribute
a package. The first error message is Failed to create virtual directory on the defined share or volume of the distribution point. The second error is Distribution Manager failed to connect the the distribution point. The third error is Distribution Manager
failed to process package "Package Name". I know that installing IIS with BITS extensions and WebDav support would fix this problem. However, I would like to use the DP without IIS like I did in SCCM 2007.
Looking at the supported configurations, I see the below. This leads me to below that it is possible. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, what I am missing in my steps.
With System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the distribution point site system role does not require Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). When BITS is configured on the distribution point computer, BITS on the distribution
point computer is not used to facilitate the download of content by clients that use BITS

BITS is a client side technology and has nothing to do with the server side of a DP or IIS and thus is irrelevant.
WebDAV was built into the relevant components of ConfigMgr obviating the need for the Windows Server WebDAV component so that's not needed for 2012 at all and thus N/A.
Ultimately, no, this is not possible. IIS is required on a DP in ConfigMgr 2012. This is clearly listed at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs.

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting in-place distribution point upgrades

I have a shared SCCM 2007 secondary site server that I'd like to upgrade to a SCCM 2012 Distribution Point. I went to the Administration>Migration>Source Hierarchy>Shared Distribution Points and right clicked and hit Upgrade and then proceeded
through the Upgrade Shared Distribution Point Wizard. Then under Administration>Migration>Distribution Point Upgrades, monitored that status, but even though I left it overnight, the status is still "Upgrade distribution point." I checked under
the Monitoring>Distribution Status>Distribution Point Configuration Status and selected the name of my distribution point and noticed that I'd forgotten to add the Site Server's computer account to the local admin group on my Distribution Point Server.
But even though I've corrected that, the status of the upgrade has not changed and there is nothing of note in resource manager indicating that the process is underway.
Are there any additional logs to monitor the progress of the in-place Distribution Point upgrade? Are there any other troubleshooting steps I can do to determine why the status of the upgrade isn't complete?

    Hi all
I would like to share my experience with migrating from SCCM 2007 Distribution Points to SCCM 2012. We have in our test environment 39 secondary site systems with the role of distribution points and I wanted to play with the migration feature "Share
Distribution Point" scenario. In the night in which I had prepared the Secondary sites using the migration wizard, 30 of the 39 sites completed in approximately 3 hours with the status "Completed upgrade distribution point". On all distribution
points the same completion date was entered. It seems that a task at specific times in the background check again whether the migration is complete and the status is consolidated. The remaining 9 Distribution Points were then completed almost exactly after
    12 hours.
I then inquired about the migrated packages. On the night not a single package came in the status 'Targeted'. After about 12 hours I saw at once that now at least the distribution points were recorded in most packages. The status 'Installed' but got no distribution
point. I then startet at about 10 packages an update distribution job. These then became the status of 'Installed' more than 4 hours later. Then the weekend was between and on Monday morning, no other distribution points were listed as 'Installed'. I checked
local on the distribution point, if all of the packages was converted. This was the case, not only the 10 I have updated. The packages then should be available during deployments, I think. But I have not tested it.
If you have looked at a package converted times more precise, the status of most distribution point is 'Unknown'. I then googled for this situation, and I have found this
article. There seems to be a bug which is currently in a solving process.
For me, there are two solutions for this problem:
    1. Waiting for the hotfix and the problem is then solved centrally. By the fact, that we migrate the 340 Secodary Sites in 3 weeks, I don't think that this hotfix will be available.
    2. Depending on the number of distribution points and packages it may be helpful if all 'targeted' packages are again updated. In this 'Unknown' status situation I simply do not know if the packages are really available or not.
I found another problem with the Distribution Point migration. Actually with the migration of SCCM 2007 Secondary Site Server to SCCM 2012 remote Distribution Point, an uninstallation of the secondary site server should be performed. We had tested this with
SCCM 2012 RTM and it was working at that time. With the update to SCCM 2012 SP1 here again seems a problem with the migration to be added. In the SCCM 2007 environment, the Secondary Site Server were removed during migration. But not local uninstalled, even
    after 3 days.
Conclusion to the Distribution Point in SCCM 2012 SP1 migration:
As always, you just have to have patience until the migration jobs are completed. Certain tasks must then be carried out by hand. In my view, the missing log information is the biggest problem. Without the log information I was blind
during the migration. If you only have a short window for migration and like us, that we need to migrate 340 Secondary Site Server in the production environment, the scenario must be carefully considered. We proof now to not migrate the Secondary Sites with
the Migration Wizzard, but start from the ground up a new installation of Distribution Points followed by the necessary sync packages.
    Kind regards Stefan Somogyi

  • SCCM 2012 R2 - Distribution Point untrusted domain - Not acknowledging Network Access Account (FYI)

    Hello!
    Scenario
Built a single primary site server in one domain with multiple distribution points. All site servers are member of this one site.
The distribution points in the primary site servers' domain function as expected. The distribution point deployed to an untrusted domain does not. The primary site server can see all objects in the domain, publishes successfully, and CCM client on the
DP in the untrusted domain knows its part of the site, knows its AD site (according to locationservices.log). The DP role is installed properly, logs are populating, queries are being made for application lists and updates. nfortuantely authentication
errors indicate that this software can'tbe downloaded.
In essence the DP in the untrusted domain can't pull down content from the primary site server. The role uses BITS to download content from IIS on the primary site server, but the requests each throw a 401 error. Unauthorised. This should be an easy fix.
Create a Network Access Account in the primary site server's domain, assign it to the site (Software Distribution setting), wait for the DP to pick up the setting and watch it retrieve its content. The DP in the untrusted domain is configured as a Pull DP,
implying it has to use a Network Access Account to download content. It knows the content is available and makes every effort to download it.
    Problem
The DP in the untrusted domain doesn't know a Network Access Account (NAA) has been defined for the site.
The account does exist, created in the primary site server's domain and assigned to the site. Its not a password issue. IIS has not been set for Anonymous access as this isn't needed - the NAA should provide the credentials it requires to pull down content.
A manual check using the URL of the package confirms the package is accessible from the DP when using the NAA's credentials. I've allowed enough time (i think) for the DP to acknowledge the NAA. For fun the DP role was removed, and the CCM agent removed. Both
were reinstalled. A fresh install didn't detect the NAA.
    Solution
After some soul searching and a little frustration, it came down to this: A Pull DP always uses the Network Access Account. If the DP can't find a Network Access account it will fail to pull down content. This is undisputed. Found an article that states
the Pull DP always uses the CCM client configuration to do its dirty work. At that point the CCM client was checked. It had the classic problem of only displaying two Actions - Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle, User policy Retrieval & Evaluation
Cycle. Most components were installed but not enabled. This is fairly common. Looked at the console, found the device, added the Approval column. Turns out it wasn't auto-approved. Reason being that the client is in an untrusted domain and clients in untrusted
domains aren't approved automatically (by default).
In this case something as simple as an Approving the client fixed these issues.
    The DataTransferService.log highlights the issue:

    - No trusts between domains/forests
    DomainA\PRIMARYSERVER
    - Primary Site Server, MP, DP, IIS, all roles
    DomainX\DP1

Based on the above, you are using a PullDP. If so, have you installed the client agent on this system? The client agent is required on PullDPs in untrusted domains so that they can acquire the NAA.

  • OSD: prestaged image does not distribute to remote distribution point

    Hi,
We have an SCCM 2012 with 2 distribution points: a virtual (the sccm server) and a physical (a pure distribution point). Once and a while we have issues with deploying packages to the physical dp but clearing it and redistirbuting solves the issue.
Now we have a big OS image (15 GB) which does not want to deploy to the physical distribution point at all.
The status stays "in progress" since this morning 11 AM (+/- 8 hours ago). Other packages distribute also slowly but fine.
Distmgr.log shows only logs from end of March this year and then stopped logging anything so I don't have a clue what is going wrong.
    Please advise.

    Hi,
Please go to the properties of the OS image, make sure "Manually copy this content to the distribution point" on the "Distribution Settings" tab is checked.
    Best Regards,

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Points on Domain Controllers

I want to install Distribution points on all of my remote servers. They are all domain controllers though. I know one of the prerequisites to host the DP role is to have the SCCM computer object apart of that servers local administrators group. Since they
are domain controllers they dont have a local security policy and it is controlled by AD. I'm sure you can add the SCCM computer object to the domain admins group to solve this but my question is if this is considered a supported configuration?

If you are using the DC as a Distribution point to install clients via Client Push, the "NT Authority\Authenticated Users" group must be added to the local group "Users" to the DC/DP.
Clients are still able to get installed manually, but Client Push fails.
Failed to correctly receive a WEBDAV HTTP request.. (StatusCode at WinHttpQueryHeaders: 401)
Run elevated command prompt (net localgroup users "Authenticated Users" /add)
Test Client Push - Should be successful.
Reason: By default the local groups NT Authority\Interactive Users and
NT Authority\Authenticated Users are removed from the Domain Controller. Clients that are using the DP for content cannot authenticate using the computer account.

  • Client update not working due to distribution point

Since upgrading from 2012-SP1-R2 i haven't been able to upgrade the clients, im fairly sure now after a fair amount of research this is down to the distribution point. I would assume that if there was an issue with the distribution point the update wouldn't
    be sent to the clients.

Im fairly sure i have the automatic updated all done, via the Hierarchy settings. Its only when i went to distribute content on one of my packages i realised that the issue might be with the MP/DP as i get "failed to distribute content details will
be available after server finishes processing"
In distmgr.log i get "package ****00002 does not have a preferred sender.
Used 0 out of 3 allow processing threads
In smsdpmon.log There is nothing for months which was my next check.

  • Distribution Point IIS Config - Multiple applications using Default Web Site

    Hi all,
I've having some problems with a distribution point, when trying to download content I'm getting the following error in the datatransferservices.log:
Error sending DAV request. HTTP code 500, status 'Internal Server Error'
Looking at IIS, I can see that another application (uniflow print server) has published folders under the Default Web Site.
    Reading
similar errors it appears it may be to do with ISAPI filters being configured by the other application. Unfortunately these filters are required by the Uniflow application. So, my question is:
Is there any way to change the web site used by the distribution point?
    Thanks,
    Iain

Not on a one off basis, no. The web sites are tied to ports which means you would also have to change the port. Both are global changes. The better solution is to not multi-purpose a DP.
