Callmanager upgrades

whats the opinions on how upgrades re handled.
we have a pub & 2 subs on 4.1.2, and need to upgrade to support some devices that are not available on the current system. i.e. ATA 188, 2801 Router 7941/7961 handsets.
I realise the device packages can be added fairly easy, however as we're on 4.1.2 a few releases behind, I feel that an upgrade is probably due.
However whats putting me off is the time involved in the proceedure, i.e. from what I see I need to upgrade OS, & sql as well as the ccm software.
Our maintainer who I could ask to do this, wants about 1.5 days per server, which seems excessive to me and when its three servers thats taking a lot of time.
How does anyone else schedule upgrades, comments please.

i've done an 8 server cluster in 24 hours, so 3 servers should take no more than 9 hours. (if you don't have any show stopping errors/issues)
definately can be done in a business day plus a bit of overtime. (or after hours which is better for the users in most cases)
must be done one server at a time, especially during the synchronizing the CCM030x database process. (publisher first then one subscriber at a time)
be sure to follow disaster recovery steps such as performing a BARS backup before starting, pulling an HDD of a RAID/Mirror set, etc.
also, have all the disks, SRs, patches, data ready to go. all these are stated in the step-by-step upgrade instructions.

  • CallManager upgrade from 3.3(5)es23 to 4.2(3) fails

    Not having a lot of luck over on the Unified Communications Applications forum so thought I would post this here as well.
    The CallManager upgrade from 3.3(5)es23 to 4.2(3) fails at installing SQL2000 SP4.
    On the Publisher :
    OS Image 2000.2.4
    OS Service rel : 2000.4.3aSR9
    OS Upgrade : 2000.4.3a
    On the Subscriber :
    OS Image 2000.2.4
    OS Service rel : 2000.4.3aSR9
    OS Upgrade : 2000.4.3a
    SQL2K SP : SP3a(1.0.6)
    The SQL version is too high to allow the Publisher to be patched to SQL2k
    SP3a(1.0.6).
    I have also donwloaded the SQL200 SP4 upgrade and tried installing that on the
    Publisher but this fails also.
    I did try upgrading the OS on both the Pub and Sub to 2000.4.4a with
    2000.4.4aSR6 but the CallManager upgrade still failed at the SQL2000 SP4
    upgrade phase of the installation.
    Has anyone seen this happen before and know a solution? All suggestions very welcome.

    SQL SP4 should be installed AFTER CallManager4.2(3) upgrading finished.
    ( Please refer to SQL SP4 readme.file from cisco , not from Microsoft)
    Here is the basic task order:
    OS upgrade->CCM upgrade->SQL SP4 upgrade.
    My suggestion:
    Restore your system to CCM3.3(5) ( find your backup data)
    Then upgrade again.

  • Callmanager Upgrade Question

    Upgrading from 4.0(2) to 4.1(3).
    The actual Callamanager(2pub and 2 Sub) is running on an old Hardware. We puchased new servers to install the CCM 4.1(3). Question is How to Upgrade and keep all Config of CCM 4.0(2)(phones,users...etc). Will it go like this:
    1- Install CCM 4.0(2) on the New Servers
    2- Run BARS Restore (assuming a Backup of CCM 4.0(2) is already taken of the old Hardware)
    3- Upgrade Callmanager to 4.1(3)
    Am i missing something? how about service releases...etc?
    The DOc i found on Cisco is only relating to an Upgrade without Hardware Change.

  • Callmanager upgrade 6.1.2 to 6.1.3 partition problem

    Hi All, im trying to upgrade from 6.1.2 to 6.1.3 however, the ISO is about 2Gigs and I get the error "There is not enough disk space in the common partition to perform the upgrade. Please use either the Platform Command Line Interface or the Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT) to free space on the common partition."
    Is there a way I can get around this or increase my partition size. I'm attaching a jpeg screen shot of my console partition sizes.

  • Callmanager upgrade fails

    guys have a cm ver 6.1(1) which wont upgrade, have tried to upgrade to a few diff vers, anyone ever seen this type of error before

    Let's back this up if you don't mind.  You say you have 6.1.1 - so first things first, what version(s) have you tried to upgrade to?  Did you experience this error on the very first attempt?  If so, what was the upgrade path?
    How was this system built?  Was this a 4x to 6x upgrade build or was this a fresh 6x build?  Alternately (it could be 5x to 6x).  Give me some details and we'll try to walk this out.

    The installation is not proceeding in the PUB or in the SUB?
    Make sure you have run Upgrade Assistant and
    LMHOSTS|HOSTS files are configured correctly.
    Windows path environment path is not correct. So the isntaller is unable to save the dc
    database.
    It could be incorrect DNS entree that maybe preventing it from properly installing it.
    It could be that you running into
    CSCee81635 bug below are the details.
    If the problem is after installing CallManager, DCDirectory service fails to start giving a logon failure error message.
    Conditions:
    If windows administrator password has any of the following 4 characters, this
    problem will surface.
    \ " % ^
    Workaround:
    Change the windows administrator password to remove the one or more special
    characters mentioned above from the windows administrator password and reinstall CallManager.

    From the cco i have found that its not possible to migrate a callmanager 4.2.1 with a data migration tool to callmanager 5.1.2b. Can any ony confirm this.

    Sadly, you are correct :( There is no Upgrade path from the CCM 4.2 Train to any 5.x Release. This nice new Tech Note document shows a good visual of the supported Upgrade paths (CCM 4.2 can go directly to CCM 6.x)

  • VoIP Monitoring and Management Tools

    Does anyone have suggestion on VoIP monitoring and management tools for large enterprise voip infrastructure?
    We are in the final phase of 8000 phone cut-over across 2 location (2clusters) and need some advice on choosing the right monitoring system.
    I saw Qovia have Cisco approved monitoring tools.
    Does anyone ever use this? any suggestions or advice?

    Monitoring voice quality is just one aspect of ongoing operations. It is equally (if not more) important to have the ability to remotely troubleshoot end-user problems, manage configuration changes, and perform active testing on a regular basis before users are impacted.
    In addition, whenever you make changes to your IPT system (e.g. CallManager upgrades/patches, IOS upgrades, power outages) you'll definitely want the ability to verify the system is still operating as design. Using the active tests you can do this easily and in an automated fashion.

  • BARS data (when replacing publisher server)

    Hi there,
    I gonna replace the publisher server and then connect the new publisher with the existing subscriber.
    My question is:
    When I run BARS and choose the data source server, should I choos both publisher and subscriber server?
    Or just publisher server?

    Good stuff, you are halfway there! The db replication problem and DC directory health problem are most likely related;
    Interpreting the Results
    The validation results display in the Upgrade Assistant Summary window. At the top of the window, a report summarizes the results for all modules and displays which modules failed, which modules produced warnings, and which modules passed. A link to the folder that contains all log files, including the Upgrade Assistant Summary report, displays also.
    To identify a problem with the failed validation module, review the following information that displays in the Summary window:
    The first link points to the log file that specifies the error or warning.
    Click the first link and search for the error or warning; for example, ERR: or WARN: .
    The second link points to the corrective action file that describes the log file error message and recommends the corrective action.
    Click the second link to open the corrective action file. Search the corrective action file for the error message that is noted in the log file. Review the description and corrective action.
    Caution After you correct all problems that the utility identifies, Cisco strongly recommends that you run the utility again on every server in the cluster before you begin the upgrade.
    Obtaining the Log File
    You can obtain the results from the utility in the following directory:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Cisco\Logs\UPGRADEASST (for example, UPGRADEASST-05-15-2003_13.47.58)
    To access the log file, click the Summary file.
    Tip A link to the log file displays in the Summary window for every failed validation module. To access the log file, click the link in the Summary window.
    The Summary.html file, which is the Upgrade Assistant Summary report, provides the exact same information that displays in the Upgrade Assistant Summary window.
    Each time that you run the utility, the utility creates a new log folder and new set of log files. The utility does not remove the log files, even if you uninstall the utility. You erase the log files when you reimage the server or manually delete the files.

    **This db replication between Pub and Sub(s) is broken**
    The publisher database server upgrade requires that all call-processing processes that the server handles fail over to the configured subscriber servers. Database replication must exist prior to the upgrade, so failover occurs.
    This utility verifies the database replication status for all subscriber servers in the cluster. This utility validates that the database contains the latest information about the system. Validation results include Running, Idle, Failed, or Succeeded.

  • Upgrade CallManager 4.1(2) to CUCM 6.1(5)

    Hi,
    What is the best approch to upgrade CallManager 4.1(2) to CUCM 6.1(5)?
    There will be 2 new CUCM servers available for ver 6.1(5). There are around 1000 phones.
    Based on the Cisco upgrade guide, there is no direct upgrade from 4.1(2) to 6.1(5). Does it really need to upgrade to 4.1(3) first, then 6.1(5)? Is it possible to upgrade from 4.(2) to 6.1(5) using DMA tool directly?
    If don't use DMA tool, but configure CUCM 6.1(5) from scratch, how difficult is it to configuration 1000 phones and 1000 users? Is there a way to export the phone and user configuration from 4.1(2) then use bulk configuration to upload file to 6.1(5)?
    All suggestion/experience are appreciated.

    You always need to be on the latest release from the CCM train you're on, in your case it's mandatory to be in 4.1(3) for ANY Linux upgrade.

    You can export the a lot of data using BAT if you want to do a fresh install, however you'll need to handle the data to add all the new mandatory fields 6.1(5) has and your BAT file won't have.
    It's possible but it requires some work on the CSV files.

  • CallManager 4.1 to 6.1 upgrade data import

    New to Unified Communication I've been assigned to upgrade our callmanager from 4.1 to 6.1. Is there a way that I can import the phones and data settings while I upgrade so I dont have to import phones and create partitions, search spaces, and all that. Saving that time would be helpful.

  • Why should I upgrade my Callmanager 4.x to a latest version?

    I was wondering, we've an operational Callmanager 4.1 that has been running for quiet 4-5 years and never felt like we've to upgrade until recently that we're being pushed by Cisco to upgrade our applications\servers as their End-Of-Life has been announced and we'll be soon left out of support!
    My question is from business perspective, what're the key features\benefits we'll get if we upgrade let's say to the latest version of UCM 7.X? How do you explain (in simple language) some critical enhancements\improvements that we'll get especially in terms of functionality, if we upgrade our Callmanager 4.x to UCM 7.0?

    Hi!
    Here are some reasons why you should upgrade to a later version:
    1. As you just mentioned EoS/EoL. Older versions might be hitting bugs which will not be fixed
    by the developers 'cause usually they fix new bugs on later versions. Also the support you can
    get from TAC will end on EoS.
    2. CUCM 5.X through 8.X versions run on Linux, whether 4.X version used Windows. Linux is
    an appliance model which is faster, more robust, provides more security and is not affected
    by viruses. Besides the installation is easier and faster, you don't need to install first an OS
    and then the CUCM. No need for Microsoft patches, CSA, anti virus, etc. The Linux OS and
    CUCM SW come embedded so you just need one installation disk.
    3. With newer CUCM versions, newer features are introduced. For example older 4.X versions
    do not support SIP endpoint registration, if you want to use newer features you will need to
    upgrade. There have been several features introduced on newer versions, you can check them
    on the Release Notes:

    4. If you are using other UC product such as Unity, CUC, UCCX, CUPS probably you'll need to
    upgrade them too in case you want a new feature too. UC products have a compatibility between
    them... it's important to check if you upgrade your CUCM if other products will need and upgrade
    too or viceversa.

    5. Newer versions such as 8.0 which can run on VMware. This means you can install it on a blade

    6. Just like with the CUCM SW, phone firmwares are also updated for later CUCM versions.
    7. With newer CUCM versions you can use newer phones. Suppose right now you are fine with
    7940s and 7960s... but as they are EoS/EoL when you want to buy new phones, your CUCM 4.X will
    probably not support them and you will need to upgrade.

  • Upgraded Callmanager to 4.1.3sr3 and ICD agents cannot go active

    Upgraded PUB and SUB from 4.0.1 to 4.1.3sr3 and now my ICD clients cannot go active. They can log in but get the error "Request to change agent state failed. Unable to change agent state.

    Did you run the JTAPI update utility as indicated in the following link?
