Calm down

Lots of folks have gotten some serious bunches in their undies here over problems with the Mac App Store, but let's calm down and step back for a minute. Consider...
*The Mac App Store is brand new*
If something doesn't work just yet, back off, give it a few days and wait for the dust to clear. If that something that didn't work cost you money to not work, go contact Apple or the developer of the app in question, whichever is appropriate. Resolution will probably not be found here for such things.
*The Mac App Store does not replace the internet*
You survived just fine on Wednesday without the Mac App Store. Just because the Mac App Store appeared on Thursday does not mean that the same day all developers stopped selling Mac software any other way. If an app isn't listed, or can't be purchased, or whatever, go buy it the way you would have done it on Wednesday.
*The apps are (mostly) not made by Apple*
If an app that you bought or downloaded from the Mac App Store crashes, doesn't work as advertised or has other similar issues, you need to talk to the developer of that application. Complaining about it here won't bring resolution.
*TNSTAAFL (in other words, there's no such thing as a free lunch)*
Don't expect apps to be free just because you bought the same app for your iPad. That's not how the development world works. Some developers may offer such deals, but most probably won't. They had to pay a lot of programmers to port the program to another platform (yes, Macs and iPads are separate platforms), and they have to pay for that somehow.
Similarly, don't expect free major updates to paid software. Just because the Mac App Store offers an update mechanism does not mean that major new releases will be obtained as updates for free through that mechanism. Again, developers have to pay for programmers to create those major updates, and they have no reason to do so if they can't get paid for them.
I'm sure that, over time, more FAQ-type questions will come up, but I think that covers what's come up in the last 24 hours!

I understand what you mean, but you should understand easily that is very annoying to spend money to something NOT working.
This is not the place to address that kind of issue, unless you're having a problem with the App Store application itself. If you are, then I will gladly personally refund you the purchase price of 10.6.5 to 10.6.6.
And since there is no place to contact apple but this forum..
Of course there is:
http://www.apple.com/contact/
http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/
And, BTW, you are not contacting Apple on this forum, you're contacting Apple users.

  • Frequent state between agressive mode and calming down mode

I have a cisco 1841 router, on which ip inspection is enabled (IPS). The inspect max-incomplete for high is 500 and for low is 400. This is a gateway to an ISP (for internet) with 512K bandwidth. I get frequent transitions between aggressive and calming down modes, which is causing connection interruption. It was working fine, but it is happening currently. Can anybody help me with this?

  • Though installed firefox 10.0, I recently have the application updater.exe running as soon as firefox is launched. The problem disappears when forcefully closing updater.exe, then also firefox calms down. How to avoid this problem?

It consumes 30% of cpu and takes with it firefox, together consuming more than half of CPU and going on >1/2h.
This is a new phenomenon which slows down all other activity on my computer.

After updating to version 10 I closed Firefox.
I noticed that there was a lot of CPU activity.
Checked Task Manager and noticed that in Processes, firefox.exe and plug-in container were running. Opened Firefox and closed again but the processes were still running in TM.
Highlighted firefox.exe in TM and clicked End Process. Both processes disappeared from TM.
Have opened and closed FF a couple of times since with no problem.
However, the OP seems to indicate that this is a problem that re-occurs.
Why is FF not shutting down properly? Is it possibly something to do with the automatic check for add in/extension updates?

  • Firefox "froze" after I refreshed a forum chat room, but my mac didn't recognize it as a non-responsive program. I tried quitting, didn't work. I tried shutting down, all other open applications quit but firefox kept the machine from shutting down.

Chat room was for a bbcode forum.
I'm running a MacBook with Leopard.
I have the latest version of Firefox.
I can move the ff window around my screen and when i click on it my menu bar doesn't recognize that i'm in the ff window.

i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? Activity Monitor on Mac just shows the total used by the app. it's impossible in my case to efficiently disable dozens of add-ons & scripts, restart, and test each one by one b/c it can take several hrs before the CPU starts to spike high again. i have no time for this.
    thanks

  • Intermittenttly, when scrolling down a page, the page jumps back up uncontrollably and nothing makes it stay in the desired place.

This happens also on pages I can zoom in on - it will zoom in and out uncontrollably. Sometimes just moving the cursor across the window without clicking on anything will cause the view to zoom in or out. Eventually it calms down.
This IS intermittent and started only recently. When I turn off my laptop, it usually says it's installing an update and I'm not sure if that's a Mozilla update, Quicktime, Flash or what and if you can tell me how to determine what's being updated so often, I'd appreciate it because I have a suspicious nature about things happening without my knowledge!
The scrolling up and down can happen on a page once and if I go out and return, it may or may not happen again. The distance it goes back is never the same. Left-clicking the mouse doesn't anchor the page. Using the scroll bar doesn't change anything. In fact, even when the left mouse button is depressed with the cursor on the scroll bar, the bar will jump up and down by itself.
I use a Rocketfish wireless mouse. Thinking it was the problem, I replaced the battery and re-booted it but that doesn't help. Closing Firefox and re-opening it doesn't stop the problem.
It doesn't seem to happen in documents on my laptop, just on the internet.
In fact, it's happening right now!
Thanks for your help...Hope you have some ideas for me!
ALSO - I am NOT a fan of Google and don't really want it on my computer but I notice "Google update" listed as a plugin. If you can tell me how to remove it, please do. Thank you!

    Jeesh, sorry for the typos...
I've also contacted the template creator, and he couldn't seem to fix it either.

  • Cross references causing ID to bog down

I hope this is my last question for a while . . . I have a ID book document containing hundreds of cross references across several documents. Whenever I open one or more of the files, ID starts blinking the busy cursor at me (interspersed with a ready cursor that goes away before you can actually do anything).  This swirling busy cursor just goes and goes and goes--I suspect that the application is checking all the hundreds of cross references over and over again.  However, nothing is changing on those refs and the "checking" behavior is practically making InDesign useless. I can't do anything without waiting minutes for ID to finally calm down and let me click on something again.  Is there anyway to turn off that constant reference checking or maybe convert all the cross references to static hyperlinks so ID will operate normally?

Hey, seconding this problem! This is beyond annoying and into "why didn't I buy Quark Xpress". There HAS to be a way to prevent this from occurring. Somebody?? Anybody?? Buhler??

  • HT1386 i want to sync music from my itunes to my iphone? Why is this probably harder than discovering a cure for cancer? FFS im trippin out over this!!! 3 hours down the ****** today downloading itunes and redownloading it then tryin to sync! FML!!!

pretty much as above? any very simple answers coz everything ive tried to folloq doesnt exist!!! >:(

You are far more likely to get help if you calm down and explain the problem. By that I mean, what did you do? What happened when you did that? What error messages did you receive (be as exact as possible)? What steps did you take to troubleshoot ("everything" is not the correct answer here).
As it stands, all we really know is that you want to sync music and you can't and that you are upset.  So, now that you have vented, start a new thread without the hyperbolic references to cancer. I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
    Best of luck.

  • I just updated my Iphone 4 with the latest update form Itunes and it killed it. It said some error and shut down and went to the install itunes screen. I have lost everything! This is ridiculous!

As above, I updated my phone, no jail break no nothing and its stuffed. All the money I have spent on in app purchases all gone?
I am gutted, all because if Apple stuffing up? That is not fair. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the recent update?

Thanks Malvin, I have calmed down a bit, it still says 5minutes till back up is complete, I did sync my phone. At this point I will just be relieved to get it to turn on to normal, then I will start worrying about apps.
What on earth is wrong with the updates? I think I am just going to ignore them from now on. The previous update locked my itunes and I couldn't access my apps untill i downloaded another app (thanks to these forums).
I will post back in a few minutes once it is complete.

  • Everybody settle down about Lion!

So far Lion has been out for 4 days, sure there are going to be bugs its the first version of a new operating system!, of course everything isnt going to be perfect. Apple is already seeding (or about to seed) 10.7.2 for developers and this should fix some bugs and problems.
People need to settle down about simple little bugs, i have two macs that i upgraded a couple of days ago and so far havent had any bugs whatsoever, and even if i come across some i certinetly wont retreat back to Snow Leopard.

LION OS X 10.7 NOT READY FOR BUSINESS!!!!
So from what I gather, everyone should calm down because a couple of guys claim that the majority of users are having no problem.  Those that are having trouble should enjoy the amazing features and perhaps import data back from your time machine backups...
Well I can't.  Sorry.  Cannot get network accounts at all.  When I first 'upgraded' there were no network accounts available so I took the advice from this forum that I should unbind with my 2008 R2 Server and rebind.  Well guess what - now I cannot rebind with them.
So I look at my backups.  Guess what.  I cannot connect to my My Western Digital (World) drive that connected so happily before - "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem."
This would have to be one of the biggest stuff ups of all time.  Clearly this basic functionality (connecting to an MS Network) has not been tested rigourously enough or at all.
Can we have some fixes please Apple and some advice that the fixes exist.  I would like to have my expensive Apple computer working again on my network in a 'business as usual' kind of way.

  • BSOD K8N2 AMD X2 3800

Noticed problem accessing E drive = error message
tried defrag, chkdsk /f and couldn't complete
nothing before today stored in system restore
started getting BSOD IRQ_EQUAL_TO_NOT_LESS_THAN Stop 0x000000000xA
tried to start copying files from E with bsod after a 1-2 min of copy process
ran Hitachi drive diag and drive failed in basic and advanced mode
ran ontrack drive diag and drive would stop after a few min on the read test
so...thought drive was bad...copied what I could from drive and returned for warranty replacement
installed and formatted new SATA drive...copied files to E
now getting BSOD on copying all files
cannot complete virus check on any drive... bsod on all drive access after a few minutes
    updated BIOS and mobo drivers
    no change... did Win Repair
now computer really runs like crap...getting fail on spoolsv.exe
booted into safe mode and did virus check ccleaner and spybot check
??? should I fix ccleaner registry problems?
    didn't BSOD during safe mode
went back to normal mode, same spoolsv.exe error
kept saying I need to update to sp2, but hangs during 'finishing install'
    tried running sp3 candidate...hangs
    what would you do?
should I give up and try to upgrade to Vista and hope it fixes everything?

Seems like your OS files have gotten corrupted - from Command Prompt try SFC /SCANNOW with the OS CD-ROM in a drive.  You also need to calm down and run some basic diagnostics, e.g. memtest86+ like someone else said and then run WDC diags on your remaining drives and a full Windows scan of at least the boot drive with CHKDSK /R or "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" with the Windows scanner.
Which nForce3 driver pack are you using - the last from nVidia was 5.10 (5.11 is bad so do not use).  Where did you DL the SATA/RAID drivers?  If from MSI and it's the version with V5.34 NVATABUS.SYS I wouldn't use that - the 5.10 pack SATA is OK but the best SATA/IDE driver, if you must, is the V4.79 SATA-IDE which is only available as part of an aborted attempt at a unified driver pack, 6.37Beta, by nVidia... available here http://downloads.guru3d.com/nForce-6.37-Beta-Drivers-download-971.html BUT use only the drivers in the IDE folder, which you'd have to install manually.  You could also do a custom remix, like I have, by replacing the IDE folders in the 5.10 pack with the ones from the 6.37Beta pack.
BTW forget about Vista with a nForce3 mbrd - nVidia has removed all "compatibility" notices and their official stance is that it(Vista+nForce3) does not work with a dual-core CPU and they will not be doing drivers.

  • Text is running together on some pages and not others. i've tried no squint and playing around with text options in tools. I can't strike a good balance.

I can't seem to figure out how to have a full screen experience with larger text and everything is in proportion. Either the right end of lines are chopped off, or lines of text are running into each other and out of boundaries.
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
== I installed FF earlier this evening. I've had FF before and my gripe was the inability to set a certain magnification. I found the no squint add on and it seems very good, but somewhere I'm getting stuck. I've been fiddling with no squint, font options in tools and size and resolution settings for my monitor.

i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? • Purpose of Collaboration Services

OK, now I'm admittedly a relative Apple noob, so bear with me.
According to the Mac OSX Server Getting Started Guide - page 15-17:
"iCal Server makes it easy to share calendars, schedule meetings, and coordinate events."
However - as evidenced here - it doesn't appear that iCal Server is intended to share calendars at all, in fact it seems to only allow single users to make their own calendars and whatnot:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2144655&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2238411&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2237812&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2241199&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147439&tstart=30
Can someone confirm this before I spend thousands of dollars needlessly, and i can go calm down my CEO who is foaming at the mouth to be able to have a single calendar betwixt his iphone and his outlook 2007?
Essentially my requirements (and understanding of how it works) are this:
ipod/iphone users as well as macs, and PC's running Outlook 2007 should be able to connect to a centralized calendar, whereby users can schedule other users for meetings and work items.
Every user should be able to view the calendar and at a glance see what has been scheduled.

In general, what you need to do is use the "iCal Server Utility".
You use that application to create a "Resource" or a "Location". These would be what you would consider a "group" calendar (ie, a "room reservation" or "staff vacation" calendar.)
Once you create this "Resource/Location", then you can allow your users to have read/read-only access to that calendar.
The only tricky thing about this is that Apple inexplicably removed the ability to set permissions to these resource/location calendars from a GUI, so you have to do it via command line according to these basic steps:
First determine the locations' record name in OD:
    dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 list /Places
Let's say that is 'vacation'. Next determine the record name of the group you want to add as a delegate. Let's say that is 'testers'.
To see who currently has delegate access do:
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --list-write-proxies locations:vacation
    To add the group do:
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-write-proxy=groups:testers locations:vacation
Do the --list command again to verify the change.
Use -read- instead of -write- if you want read-only delegates rather than read-write.
This has worked fine here. I suggest submitting an "Enhancement Request" to http://bugreporter.apple.com and ask them to put a GUI option in the "iCal Server Utility" for this (it used to be in the GUI in 10.5's "Directory.app" program...)

  • Time Machine and File Permissions

'Twere I to rate this question's technicality on a scale of 1 through 10, it would rate 8. Just warning you. Unix people will be especially useful for this.
Okay, so, before the problems started, my hard drive had three partitions. One for OS X, one for file storage for Ubuntu Linux, and one called the "Swap" partition, which somehow relates to Ubuntu (the Ubuntu installer put it there, I've no idea what it's for). Here's a makeshift diagram of what my partition map used to be:
I ran out of space in my OS X partition. You see, I've recently had the fortune to obtain some rather fantastic software. The downside is that the software (and it's files) take up roughly 53GB. I won't trouble with you what it actually is (though it should have dawned on some people by now). Between OS X and Ubuntu Linux, OS X prevailed. As far as I'm concerned, Linux will have to wait 'till I have a larger hard drive.
So, I fired up Disk Utility, and tried to remove the two Linux partitions. It told me it was "Preparing to erase [insert Linux partition name]". It told me that for an hour. After one hour, I said screw it, I'll do this the "hard" way.
My initial plan was to back up my data, and completely reformat my drive, reinstall Leopard, and have it restore from my Time Machine backup. Now, my external drive is not big enough to hold a complete system-wide backup. I had to leave some stuff out. Here's the list of exclusions, taken directly from the back up logs:
Excluding System files: 16.3 GB (242143 items)
    Excluding /Developer: 0 bytes (1 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/Downloads: 7.9 GB (18 items)
    Excluding /Applications/Creative Suite 3: 3.2 GB (13214 items)
    Excluding /Applications/Disk Images/Macromedia: 240.5 MB (4 items)
    Excluding /Applications/Utilities: 484.2 MB (111 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/.Trash: 97.3 MB (2142 items)
    Excluding /System: 108.2 MB (5874 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache: 144 KB (1 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db: 52 KB (1 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/Library/Mail/Envelope Index: 680 KB (1 items)
    Excluding /Users/Audacitor/Library/Icons/WebpageIcons.db: 20 KB (1 items)
I am uncertain as to why it excluded those last four entries. I didn't ask them to be excluded, so I assumed that was something Time Machine does automatically.
The backup worked normally, or so it seemed. After about a half hour, it told me it was done. I hastily (read; stupidly) unplugged the drive and prepared to reformat my drive. So excited was I to reach my new software, that I made the utter and completely foolish move of not double checking that everything I needed was backed up. If I had, I might never have this problem, and even if this problem were destined to happen, I could have at least saved my Pictures folder (fortunately, most of it's contents are safely residing on my iPod).
So, I wiped my drive. Specifically, I booted into my Leopard Install DVD, and went for the Erase and Install option. The install commenced and finished without a hitch. I brought my "new" computer up, enjoyed the theatrics of the intro movie and started running through the setup. I came to the step where it asks if I want to transfer files from another Mac, from another volume on my Mac, from a Time Machine backup, or not at all. I of course clicked for a Time Machine back up. The first sign of trouble was that my backup didn't show up (despite having my external plugged in). I felt a pang of fear, but it didn't worry me too much, and I thought to myself that I'd just use Migration Assistant later on (the Leopard setup sequence specifically stated I could do this if I so wished).
So I went straight to my desktop and fired up Migration Assistant, and went through the steps till it asked me to select a Time Machine backup. But there were none to select from. I waited a full minute, my fear growing steadily to terror. Finally, I realized that my data was gone, and flipped out. My inner geek, which was screaming at me to calm down and look inside my external, was shackled and thrown into a tiny corner of my now completely panicked mind. This lasted for roughly two minutes. After regaining myself, and opened my external. It contained one folder named Backups.backupdb. I opened it, and inside I found Neomiranda (Neomiranda is the name I gave my computer). So far so good. Inside the folder of Neomiranda, I found 2008-02-20-060526.inProgress. Another 30 seconds of flipping out over the idea of .inProgress. After awhile, I had the sense to right click on it, and hit the "Show Package Contents" option.
Inside were three folders, with three corresponding log files. I quickly realized that each one was a backup. The first two were empty, which I anticipated. Those were my two attempts while figuring out what to exclude, so I could get a backup to fit on my external. The third contained another Neomiranda folder, which contained all my data. Everything except my Pictures folder was there.
So, I went back and forth, manually restoring my data. When I'd finished, I started up a few apps to check that everything worked. Not everything worked. Mail wouldn't even get a bounce from the dock, Firefox told me there was a copy of itself already running, and iTunes complained that I had either a locked disk or insufficient permissions. Acting on iTunes' advice, I set out comparing the permissions of various folders I'd copied to the permissions of their equivalents on another, fully functional, system. Everything checked out. Nothing was locked, and everything had the correct permissions. I fired up Disk Utility and had it a run a permissions repair. It spat out a great deal of stuff that it apparently found wrong, and apparently fixed, but ultimately, it had no effect.
I cannot find anything wrong with any permissions, but I've got a feeling that's where the problem is. Why? Because any time I want to do anything to a folder I've copied, or anything inside a folder I've copied, it wants my admin password. Despite no apparent differences in permissions between folders I don't need a password for and between folders I do need a password for, I need a password for folders I have copied from my backup.
I've not looked into file ownership, as I couldn't find a way to even find out who a file belongs to, much less actually change ownership to anything. If I end having to use chown at a bash, fine with me, but I'm not a Unix man. I'll still need help with it (though I do know how to use the man command).

Same problem and for months now. I haven't been able to find a solution, but I suspect that's because I don't know exactly what's wrong.

  • So far, I have downloaded firefox 4.0 TWICE...does that mean I have firefox 8.0? AND WHYDOES IT KEEP ASKING ME TO DOWNLOAD FIREFOX 4?

DETAILS? OK OJ, here's the details. Firefox has crashed a b'zillion times (I'm an artist, Jim, not a mathematician!) so when they said download 4.0, I wasn't sure about it. But I did it.
And, when I turned my attention to what it had given me, I found that it had absconded with ALL of my internet passwords that weren't supporting my specific name. Except that confounded BonemanHA which is what Google used to screw up my account at youtube. (thanx, again, googz! I know you're watching all of this) but, that's besides the point.
    Then it crashed again.
    Froze and crashed.
I'm starting to think the firefox is nuzzling the arctic poles.
I swear on a stack of bibles...and lightning comes down and kicks my ass.
I calm down, the next day I pretend nothing has happened, go about re-establishing my passwords (is this too long? Will someone come out of he electronic closet in my computer to tell me if it is? I HATE writing a bunch of words only to look up and see it stoped at Dear so'n'so,)
Anyway, now it asks me if I want to download 4.0....
I should mention now that I LOVE to bring laughter to folks. Times are too hard on paople as it is, and a small mission of mine is to bring a smile, however small to people that i can. My smiley face is a lil hat guy with a big smile:
    d=^))
and if he tells a joke (did you hear about the two guys that walked into a building/ Man...You'de have thought they would use a door or climb in a window or something.)
    dX^D
But when it regularly asked if I would download fire 4.0 I was more of
    d=^|
so. I downloaded it again, because like everyone else, I get tired of the nagging whiney attitude.
Only, it didn't download the second time, either.
    It DID...
    but, it didn't.
I know it was a partial because my pretty birds are gone. That was what I chose for the top bar.
And...before you get too much of a laugh going about a guy having the pretty birds up top, consider this...
I'm 6'5", 225 pounds, and although 60, can still cut and chop a cord of wood a day for burning in the Winter.
But, it doesn't matter, does it?
The birds have flown the coop. (maybe they're pigeons?)
I still get asked to download 4.0
some of my passwords are still a mystery to me.
(I use different passwords at different places...just a security dealio, eh?)
So...dunno what else I can say.
It still freezes occasionally (once a day) but that beats crashing two and three times a day.
I get done with shipping out error reports, too, because sometimes it's my fault.
Impatiently banging on the keypad doesn't normally get ANYTHING done, but, it worked once...so I do it again.
    Sometimes.
Well, I see there's more questions below, so, I best be moving along.
I'm almost sure that I'm leaving behind a mad techie who's sure I wrote too much
    or
someone sitting there getting a good laugh.
Hope for the laugh, but...could you explain this to a tech, please?
I'm not so much a tech.... more of a user.
(ps...mixt reviews on Tron 2 It was good to see a second try but I think it went askew with a mismanaged plot line)

  • Memory Problems with Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit

In preparation to rebuild my Windows Search Index, I installed the Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit on my system (Vista Business 64).  When I finally rebuilt the index, I wasn't too surprised by what I saw happen, namely, the SearchFilter.exe process would kick in whenever I wasn't using the system and just eat RAM.  One time I turned it on and it had allocated over 4,000 MB (and my system only has 4,030 MB available) so of course it was forcing all the other processes to hard fault (ie. everything was moving like molasses--for example, it took 20 minutes to put the thing to sleep).  But I just let it do it's work, figuring that perhaps this was to be expected relative to the small library of PDF's that I've accumulated on my computer, ranging from LaTeX generated text files, to containers for hi-res scans.  So, after a day and a half of basically not using my laptop, everything finally calmed down and I enjoyed the benefits of searching the content of my library from the Windows Start menu--for a short while.
However, to my dismay I've encountered the problem that this freezing of my computer would now occur after everytime I download a new PDF (in this particular case they were Google Books scans) and then left the computer to idle.  Again, the SearchFilter.exe would allocate all of my RAM for itself and just push everything else onto the Virtual RAM, which means the SLOWEST possibly fetching you can get.  I had to uninstall as this was making my computer unusable for 15-30 minutes after each idle. Everything is back in working order without the iFilter, but I would like to know if anyone has reported such problems on x64 systems.  Obviously, I will also report the problem to Microsoft, since the search engine should certainly have the precaution to handle such memory problems.   However, it is a problem that is created by the Adobe PDF iFilter interacting with the Windows Search engine.

    Hello,
We believe we have figured this out.  It looks like it has to do with the length of the default folder location for the Adobe iFilter.
I was able to reproduce the issue and the following resolved it for me.  See if this resolves it for you all as well.
Here is how to get Adobe Version 11 PDF filter to work.
1 . If you haven’t already, run the following in SQL Server:
    Sp_fulltext_service ‘Load_os_resources’, 1
    Go
--you might also need to run:
sp_fulltext_service ‘Verify_signature’,0  --This is used to validate trusted iFilters. 0 disables it. So use with caution.
    --go
    2. Stop SQL Server.  (Make sure FDHost.exe stops)
    3.
Uninstall the Adobe ifilter (because it defaulted to having spaces or the folder name is too long).
    4.
Reinstall the Adobe iFilter and when it prompts for where to install it, change it to: C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter
    5.  Once the installation finishes, go the computer’s Environment variables. Add the following to the PATH.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter\BIN
NOTE: it must include the BIN folder
NOTE: If you had the OLD location that included spaces, remove it from the path environment variable.
    6. Start SQL Server
    7.  IF you had an existing Full-text index on PDFs, drop the full-text index and recreate it.
    8. You should now get results when you run sys.dm_fts_index_keywords('db','tblname')  --Note: Change db to be the actual database name and tblname to be the actual table name.
Give this a try and see if this fixes yours.
    Sincerely,
    Rob Beene, MSFT
