Can a single clip be rendered/exported into a movie?

Hi Folks,
I'd appreciate knowing if from event clips or a project clip, can I just take one clip and share/render/export it to a quick time movie, that I could e-mail to someone?
Thanks for any help given.
Jim

The easiest way is to start a new project and drag the clip in from the Event. Then use the Share menu.
Another way. Select your project clip, and then EDIT/COPY.
Then, start a new project, and EDIT/PASTE.

  • STRANGE: single clip missing in export! (but still in the timeline)

Strangest thing: I exported a project... and a SINGLE clip is missing. BUT... the "key" over that clip shows up (over "black.") Hmmm... So I went back to the timeline... the clip is STILL THERE! So, I re-rendered, exported again... SAME THING. That one darned clip goes "black" w/ the key over it. Any suggestions?

NOTE: Had no problem exporting this same project before.
1.) even clip info = 720 x 480 / 29.97 fps (same as ALL clips throughout entire project)
    2.) Timeline info = 720 x 480 DV Anamorphic 29.97
3.) Here's the clip in the timeline. (see image, it's the gentleman in the labcoat) Amazingly, in the export the "keys" appear over black. Just this ONE clip is missing--audio and video. No other clips are affected.
4.) Finally, here is how I am exporting the project: (see image)

  • How can i put a 3GP video file into i movie?

I have put all my baby sisters videos into imovie to make a CD...
but the most important one (the one where she was born) wont go in because its not the (mov) format, its (3GP). Can anybody help?

You could use QuickTime Pro to export your file to DV Stream. This .dv file will work with any version of iMovie.
Because your .3gp file has small dimensions the export will resize it and image quality will suffer.

Try Mixing Down the audio before export.

  • How can I get my personal home videos into iMovie?

I REALLY wanted to make my sister a special birthday video with home videos. I put the home videos which are on DVDs into my laptop and I tried just about everything, but nothing is working to convert these so that they can go into iMovie. Can someone PLEASE help me? This is super stressful. -__-

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Importing movie or more then a few clips into i movie project library?

Hi, Is there any way to import more then just a few clips into the project library, Maybe the whole movie all at once? It takes a long time taking a few clips at a time. Any help would be great!
    Thank You,

sidenote, nomenclatura : you drag clips to a Project, not the Project Library..
you can add all clips from one Event into a Project..
    • click into the black background of the Event's Preview
    • hit Apple-A (='all')
    • hit E or drag 'n drop into Project..

  • Import video from i photo into i movie

I have downloaded short video clips from my digital camera into iphoto. I have not been able to figure out how to get these clips into imovie. I've wasted hours trying to find an answer in the tutorials. Maybe a real person can enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

The weird thing is that the day before yesterday I downloaded some other movie clips from my digital camera into iphoto and somehow I got them into imovie but I can' remember how -- I think I copied from iphoto and pasted in imovie.
    Maybe yes or maybe not.
You could have copied them from iPhoto to one of the iMovie Event folders using the Finder "Drag 'n Drop" import method. Unfortunately the files will be ignored by iMovie '08 when the application is opened and will not be thumbnailed/cached. For all intentents they will be invisible as far as iMovie '08 is concerned.
Alternatively, you could have converted the file(s) to a compatible compression format it which case they may or may not be useable. If converted by a QT application like QT Pro, GarageBand, iTunes, etc. the video will convert but will not retain any audio. Of course, you can always open iMovie '08 to see if the files are really there and, if they are, open them in the QT Player to see what compression formats they actually contain at this time.
According to your notes, an MPEG1 format would not be compatible -- so how did I get the clips the day before into I movie? I do a lot of "trial and error" things -- something obviously worked. Any idea what I might have done??
I repeat that multiplexed MPEG-1 files are "playback only" compatible with QT applications. They will cannot be converted and retain audio nor can they be edited by QT applications. These files contain blocks of audio data interspersed with blocks of video data in a single data stream to spatially synchronize audio with video and prevent overrun. Fully supported QT files (playback, conversion, and edit compatible files) contain separate audio and video tracks which are synchronized temporally. This is why QT files are so touchy about timecode breaks and proper file termination -- something Windows media players generally ignore.
In any case, as previusly stated you can use any third-party, MPEG-based application to convert your files. My preference is MPEG Streamclip. It is a free application that provides all of the conversion options of QT Pro without spending $30. While it does not allow layering of content with the same or independent scaling/offsets within the display frame, it does handle multiplexed compression formats if you have the proper QT components installed. It also supports audio formats like AC3 which QT does not natively support. In your case the software as downloaded from the internet will convert your Sony clips to DV, AIC (high quality/large files), Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG (medium quality/medium size files), or MPEG-4, or H.264 (lower quality/small size files) all of which can be edited by iMovie '08 natively.

That's about what it's supposed to look.
How do You want it to look ?
    a. You can change places by using this
    b. May be You changed this top right symbol of an hard disk ?
    c. or changed the number of frames to be viewed ?
    d. OR - it can (at least for me) be so that You think of how it looks in iPhoto. (To me a very common mistake)

  • Every single clip needs to be rendered suddenly

Hello, I am a photographer that has now been thrust into shooting a lot of video due to my 5dmkii. I have been converting my footage with mpeg streamclip to pro res 422 and then editing it in fcp with no problems. Suddenly, final cut is requiring me to render every single clip I drop into the timeline. I can't figure out what is going on for the life of me. Oh, I have a macbook pro with 6 gigs of RAM too so its not my computer (that I know of). Thanks for the help!

Hi there - we need more info than just your hardware.
When you say "no problems" in reference to how you were editing before, have you changed something since then? Camera? Files?
What are your sequence settings? If they do not match your clip settings, they will need to be rendered.
When you drop your clips in the timeline, does it ask to convert the sequence settings to match the clip settings? If it does, you should click "yes".
Are you sure you are conversion settings are correct?
    Let's start with those.

Thanks for the reply with the very helpful details.
Export from Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HDTV 1080p29.97 High Quality
I suspect that we are in a no win situation here - an Elements Organizer 12 issue.
With Elements Organizer 11, 10, and 9, I can bring your MPEG2.mpg into the Elements Organizer with thumbnail with
image. I cannot for Elements 12. And, I am working with the same MPEG2.mpg in Elements Organizer 9.0/9.0.1, 10, 11,
and 12 on the same computer. In the morning, I will look Elements Organizer 13 as well.
In my work with 12, this MPEG2.mpg consistently crashed the Elements Organizer 12.
It is difficult to explain these results by invoking a missing codec theory since all was done with the same sample on the
    same computer.
    More later.

  • Rendering, Export Format and first step into FCE 4.01

    Hello,
    SCENARIO:
I’m completely new to FC and only have amateur experience in iMovie 06 and somehow managed to use the “new” iMovie. I only did basic stuff, family videos and nothing more (not that the new iMovie is really much more powerful). But I have some work to do now and have access to a workstation with Final Cut Express 4.01. I understand the basics of FCE and have seen Apple tutorials which are pretty basic. With all this in mind I decided to give FCE a try.
    *WHAT DO I HAVE?*
    I have a 45mb 1024x768 H.264 movie, here’s how the movie’s properties look in Finder:
The movie is a 20 minutes screencast demoing a program and was recorded under Windows, I have no access to any source footage. Probably was recorded using Camstasia (or similar) for Windows.
I also have Final Cut Express 4.0.1, Snow Leopard 10.6.2, a 2x Quad Core and 10GB or RAM.
*WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?*
I will be using a screen capture program (Camstasia, IShowUHD, etc) to record three or four 20 secs clips, which must replace certain parts of the original video. In iMovie (even the latest!) this is more or less not precise, but easy to do. Latest iMovie and the “precision editor” also permits handling the video/audio more easily. The idea is that the clips I will insert, will replace certain existing parts that have mistakes. THe audio will be the same (there’s a spoken voice) so I will be essentially doing the same (sans the errors in the video, hopefully)
But I want to do it in FCE. I’m sure that although I won’t be using its potential, it will be my 1st step into something more powerful. But I have questions which, despite several attempts, preferences hunting, export, render, rinse and repeat, have been unable to answer.
    *WHAT HAPPENS?*
I know that H.264 is not an editing format and that whatever iMovie does in the background is probably part of the “magic” for end users who want to upload it to YouTube; given that premise:
What settings am I supposed to use if I want to edit my above mentioned QuickTime file, provided I can later export whatever I do, back into the same H.264 1024x768 movie?
I have tried different Sequence formats, but they are all 720/1080, etc. and therefore have black borders. There’s no “custom” size that I have seen. Using the highest and closest one, leaves me with 1280xSomething, which is a wide format. I haven’t found a way to export only a “clipped” version (remember I don’t know much about FCE) and if I export using QUickTime Settings and change the size to 1024, the video will be deformed (which is -to some extent- logical, given that 1280 doesn’t fit in 1024). The “viewer” shows the 1024 video correctly, only when I drag it into the sequence, this new border appears (which is correct, because I have to “render” it and it is rendering in 720 −1280xNNN)).
The new clips (which I still don’t have) will probably be also 1024x768 H.264 or similar and I’ll add them to my sequence and inserting them in the corresponding pieces, cuting and making sure the transition fits and the audio is not crazy. But all that is the editing part, which I think I have controlled.
I have trimmed the original 20 minutes video into a 20second one, to “test” all this (I don’t want to spend a few minutes of rendering/exporting for testing this) and have been unable to produce the same 1024x768 movie I had before entering FCE.
    Any pointers?
    Thanks in advance.

I don't pretend to know how iMovie works (I've hardly ever used it), but I very much doubt it allows you to edit 1024x768 video natively without any "behind-the-scenes" conversion.
I’m hardly an expert in iMovie (if such title exists), all I can tell you, is that the H.264 1024x768 videos that i “Drag”, slice, cut, move and finally export (in the same size), look exactly the same.
Are they being converted “behind-the-scenes”? Perhaps.
Do I see or notice any difference on my screens? None at all. They really look identical.
I’d have expected FCE to *at least* be able to perform this very basic task. Evidently, FCE is targeted at something different, which then leads to the question that every iMovie 06 user asked… Why cripple iMovie in the latest releases? Where’s our “not quite FCE” but easy to use editor?
The answer has been the same: there’s no such thing anymore. I thought it was FCE (plus more) but clearly, there’s a huge market FCE can’t really touch. FCE (and Pro) might be very good products for what they do, but they are clearly not even able to touch iMovie marketshare. Which is a pity, cuz iMovie (whether you hate it or love it), is limited in a lot of things
    Thanks.
P.S.: I’m not a fan of iMovie nor a FCE basher. But I love Logic Express/Pro

  • Can't add more than one title over single clip

This is the first time I'm using a clip that is unedited apart from a title card over black at the beginning that dissolves into the clip and a dissolve to a still photo at the end of the clip.  So far I have only been able to add three titles: the first over black, the second over the actual clip, and the third over the still photo.
The clip lasts around a minute so I want to add titles as it progresses.  For example, the first title can last for 5 seconds, then a gap of 10 secs. and then another title for 5 seconds, etc.  Every time I try to drag the title
Every time I try to drag a title into the project, it doesn't "take."  Does iMovie not allow a string of titles if there are no edits within the actual clip?
    Thanx.

    This applies to iMovie 08:
    1) It appears that when you drag a photo or a title to a long clip, then by default, it thinks you want a long photo (or title). It seems like it wants to make the photo 25% or more of the length of the clip. This is why it is hard to drag multiple photos to a clip. The last photo you drag is trying to take up 25% plus of the clip, and there may not be room.
I found a good workaround. I added a dummy clip that was 4 seconds long to the end of the project. (This clip to be deleted before sharing the project). When I drag a new photo to the project, I first drag it to the dummy clip. Now the photo has a duration of exactly four seconds, and I can drag it to the place I really want it. It fits now, because it is only four seconds.
    2) I confirmed that when you put over 4-5 photos into a single clip, they will start behaving erratically. One will not show up, and another will show up twice.
The solution is to split the long clip into multiple clips. I had a long clip. I split the long clip into 30 second chunks. To do this, I imported the entire clip several times. Then, in the first instance I selected from frames 00:00 to 30:00. In the second clip I selected frames 30:01 to 1:00:00. Then 1:00:01 to 1:30:00. etc. This way, I did not lose any footage, but I had multiple virtual clips, where before there was only one. Now I was able to add multiple photos to each of these shorter clips with no trouble. And I only needed four photos per clip. It worked great.

  • How do I get audio back on single clip that loses audio when imported into Premiere Pro CC?

I've got one clip out of many that for some reason won't play any audio when imported into Premiere Pro.  I am new to Premiere Pro so am hoping it's something stupid I've done, but this is a problem with just a single clip exported the same way as all my others, the original audio is loud (not quiet) and none of the FAQ issues seem to apply (ie I haven't muted the audio or anything stupid like that)
The clip was exported from Plural Eyes into a "master" Premiere Pro project where the audio is fine. I exported it as a short MP4 clip and if I play the clip in Windows Media Player the audio is there loud and clear.
But when I import the clip into a fresh Preimiere Pro CC project this clip appears with just the "film strip" icon on the far left in the Timeline panel, unlike other clips which have an icon that shows "film strip" in the background and "audio wave" in the foreground.
I'm hitting so many glitches with the CC editions of Premiere Pro and After Effects which have annoying inconsistencies between them I'm tempted to just go back to Sony Vegas Pro (single program, no hassle) but hoping most of these issues are down to "newbie incompetence". Very hard to understand why this one clip out of many should be giving me this specific problem though. Any ideas?

I'm getting so many weird results. Most go away by simply closing the project and re-opening and I only have 6GB memory but even so, I'm disappointed by what I thought was supposed to be more "world class" video editing software than Sony Vegas Pro which I found to be a lot more stable. Also struggling with differences between Premiere and After Effects. Every time I want to do something in Pro I seem to need to go to After Effects and vice-versa. After Effects lets me do more of what I could "just do" in Vegas Pro timeline, but it's hideous for lining up audio and having to render anything in RAM to even get a clue as to what a change has done.  Need to add Audition to the long list as well I suspect. Fun times!

  • Converting a nested sequence into a single clip

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to convert a nested sequence into a single clip?
I have captured several forty minute mini-dv tapes and there were a lot of timecode breaks, my user preferences made FCP generate a new clip every time the timecode changed.
I like to make subclips from a single master clip when I edit so I added all the broken clips into a sequence and nested them which has created a single clip within a sequence, but it has labeled the footage as a 'sequence' in the browser as opposed to a 'clip'.
I think I need to strip the footage of its timecode but to not want to have to print to a blank mini-dv cassette and then re-import, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be a great help.
    Many thanks.

File - Export - QT Movie... Current Settings... don't make it self contained and DON'T trash your original captures either!!
