Can Designer 2000 (ver. 1.3) Connect to ORACLE 8i

Hello Everybody,
I have installed ORACLE 8i on Windows XP Home Edition Build (2600).
I have also installed DESIGNER 2000 (version 1.3) on the same machine(Compaq Presario Model 5410US). How do I get Designer 2000 to connect to my ORACLE 8i database. My listener is running with two default handles ORCL and EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA. But when I enter my user name and passworld and ORCL as a connetion string, I get an error message "ORA-12154: TNS:COULD NOT RESOLVE SERVICE NAME". Could someone please tell me what to do. Many thanks.

I think if you follow the steps you can connect --
1. First check whehter TCP/IP has been installed and
you can connect using the protocol. You can do this
using simple command like ping. So on the DOS command
prompt type following--
ping 127.0.0.1 and enter.
This will give you a series of messages and in the end
OK. If you get OK in the end that means TCP/IP is
properly working.
2. Then configure the tnsnames.ora for the database sid you have
chosen. You can do it through SQL Net Easy configuration.
Configure it for TCP/IP and remember the sid name e.g. ORCL.
3. Go to DOS prompt and change the directory to your
ORACLE_HOME. Start the database giving command
svrmgr30 (enter)
4. It will give you prompt as SVRMGR. Type follwing
connect internal; (enter)
It should show message as connected. Then quit out of server
manager.
5. You are now again on to DOS prompt. Type the following
lsnrctl80 start (enter)
It will give the message as Listener Started Successfully.
6. Now minimize the Dos window and start Forms application.
While connecting type username, password and database name also.
e.g. scott, tiger, ORCL.
It should get connected. Because I followed the same procedure
and now I am working suceessfully on it.

• Can't get Microsoft FrontPage to connect to Oracle 9.2i

After considerble discussion in the microsoft.public.frontpage.client newsgroup (subject: "Database | Results ... won't ... through Oracle ODBC"), we had to give up and conclude that there didn't seem to be a straightforward way to connect to Oracle 9.2i via the FrontPage database wizard.
I tried a system Oracle ODBC DSN via MS Access and it worked; but, ` can't get the same DSN to work from FrontPage. From FrontPage it generates a user/password error, though the same user/password works from MS Access.
I tried an OLEDB connection and still received the following:
Server error: Unable to connect to a database from the web server using the
connection string 'Provider=MSDAORA; PWD=myPwd; UID=Administrator; Data
Source=glOdb.mikecoughlin.net'.
The following error message comes from the database driver software; it may
appear in a different language depending on how the driver is configured.
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle
Number: -2147217843 (0x80040e4d)
I'm certain that this user/password combination is valid e.g. it works in Enterprise Manager to view tables etc.
So, my question is:
Does anyone have a/the workaround to use FrontPage to connect to Oracle 9.2i ?
thanks,

You should be able to access Oracle via ADO in VB-- this is pretty common. You'll have to be a lot more specific about what problems you're having for anyone to help, however.

Problem:
As soon as I try to generate the snapshot down to table level I can't see the db link to the remote database TEST in the DDL statement that was generated. I tried looking for a place in the database design but can't find a place to specifically define a database link.
In the database design I have specified that a db link extist but

• JDeveloper 10G (BPEL Designer): how to create db connection to Oracle Lite

I want to create a JDeveloper database connection to the Oracle Lite database installed with JDeveloper 10G BPEL Designer, but haven't been able to find any info on the subject.
Can anyone point me to some info or walk me through it?
Regards

To connect JDeveloper 10g to an Oracle Lite database, you will need to follow this setup.
1. Create an ODBC entry for the Oracle Lite database. If you have installed Oracle Lite 10g Mobile Development Kit, you should have a copy of POLITE.ODB pre-installed. Check your ODBC.ini, or run Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC), and follow the polite entry pattern. If you create a new Oracle Lite database, you must create a matching enrty in the ODBC configuration file.
2. In JDeveloper, create a new connection for your Oracle Lite database.
The Connection Name should match your entry in ODBC for ease of reading.
The Connection Type should be Oracle Lite.
The Username is system.
The Password is xxx.
The Deploy Password box is checked.
The Datasource Name must match the ODBC entry exactly.
Leave the rest of the fields as is.
Test your new connection.
Enjoy.

Hi Nguyen,
I have done something similar (migrating from Des1.2/Oracle7.2
to Des2.1/Oracle8.0) but in a NT environment and this is how I
went about it.
1. First you have to export the current repository on using the
Des1.3.2 RAU (Repository Admin. Utility) facility.
2. Then install the new version of your Des2.1 (on server
and client in my case).
3. Create a new repository using Des2.1.
4. Import back using the export file from Des1.3.2 and the
Des2.1 RAU.
Usually the Des2000 booklet from Oracle gives a detailed step by
step procedure to migrate from one ver to another. You might be
better off if you have that book with you too.
Hope this info could at least help you to get started.

• Error and crash durring creation of Designer 2000 repository

I am a student learning to use Oracle and have run accross a problem when I tried to generate a Designer 2000 repository.
I have installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition Release 8.1.5 on Windows 98.
I logged on to Oracle using the internal id and began generating a repository, at the point in the process when it reaches these details:
Stage Details
CKTRIG
Creating the repository triggers
Object Details
TRIGGER
CDI_EL_CREATE_AUDIT
Staus Information
Submitting Definition/Statement..
cdapitrg.sql
I get the following error message:
ora-04089: Cannot create triggers on objects owned by SYS
I have tried skipping the step until it reaches one it accepts and then received a fatal error which closed the whole program down. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling and starting the process from the beginning and ended with the same results.
Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly how I can get around it?
Thanks.

Am not sure if you were able to resolve the issue but below are some points:
a. I think the dlls sfabol and msa are not any more registerable, since they are more of VB.NET components and here assembly is registered and not the dll.
b. For logging into the application just ensure that you have user id in table SMOUSER and the employee for that user in SMOMITABT table.
c. If this is fine, then ensure that you have the latest BDOC metadata information on your laptop. I think in 5.0 also you need to use Clientconsole to download this information.
d. If this is all okay, then try running SQL profiler and check if the query to the ides db is being executed by the framework. If the query is fired then it means application seems to behave properly but the query is not retrieving relevant details.
For further details feel free to contact me..
thanks,

• Feasiblity study - weblogic 10.3 can connect to Oracle 8i

Can weblogic 10.3 application server connect to Oracle 8i database.
As weblogic 10.3 can be installed with jdk 1.6 only. So can this be used to deploy applications which connect to Oracle 8i database.

Most probably WLS 10.3 may not support Oracle 8.x any more. This could be the reason. It may work, I am not sure. But it is not supported as per this link:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12840_01/wls/docs103/jdbc_drivers/oracle.html#wp1066391
May be for your Oracle, you can use Oracle Drivers. But Weblogic Wrapper Oracle Drivers seems to be not supporting oracle 8.x any more.

• Developer 2000 ver 5 connecting problem with 10g

Is it possible to work developer 2000 ver 5 with 10g database? When I connected in Form Designer it worked after a long time But when in runtime both form and report gives network error. So, Please give a solution for developer 5 to work with oracle 10g.
Thanks & regards.
Jamil

Hi,
We use forms 6 and had the same problem and at this time upgrade to a new version is not possible; so we found two ways to handle this (Note we have form 6 to this may not work for you):
a) Compile your forms using a database 8 or 8i, and the fmx should be able to connect to a 10g database. this means a daily backup from to 10g to 8i or at least make sure you have the same db structure.
b) Perform a partial forms upgrade of procedure builder:
from the help menu on forms open "About form builder" and check the version of installed products.
Download forms 6i and upgrade only "Procedure builder" with this:
Oracle Procedure Builder V6.0.8.21.0 Build #1459 - Production
option b has been working for us, we are able to connect to a 10g database without problems.
Of course, this is a work-around, not supported by Oracle or anyone for that matter, so make sure you test it in a couple of machines before using in a production envrionment.
Regards,
Hugo.

• DFD balancing using FHD in Designer/2000 rel 2.1 ver

How do I perform DFD balancing using functional heirarchy diagram (FHD) in Designer/2000 rel 2.1 ver

If you mean by balancing of DFD the complexity (that is the number of (sub) functions), then the FHD is the only option to show this complexity.
Open the FHD and create a new diagram. Choose as the root function your highest level DFD-function (that should be the complete system).
Now you get a overview of your functions and subfunctions and you can see the complexity.
But what is important is that you have made DFD's on all levels, not just the lowest (elementary) level. Otherwise you can not use the FHD, because there will not be an full hierarchy of functions under a single root function.

• Connecting from Oracle designer 2000 Forms 4.5 to 9i

Hi,
a)We have installed Oracle designer 2000 and are able to connect to a 9.0.1.0.0 database.

Oracle Tools Common Area Version 2.0.0.9.0
Oracle CORE Version 3.5.2.0.0 - Production
b)We are able to connect from SQL 3.1 to a 9.0.1.0.0 database also.
1)Does Oracle support this configuration?
2)Will my Oracle 4.5 forms builder be able to use all the objects available in the 9.0.1.0.0 database?
3)Is there a possibility that my forms will not run properly because of this configuration?

Strictly speaking we only certify the upgrade from 6i to 9i, however, the technical details of going from 4.5 directly to 9i are the same and in many cases should work as going from 6i to 9i.

• Excel-2007 cannot connect to Oracle ODBC data source, Control Panel can.

I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS

1) What is my system? I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2) Why use Excel with Oracle at all? I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work? I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:

define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);

define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!

I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: ODBC DSN
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it my Oracle database name and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "DSN=<my database name>" which I keep, it also has fields for the user name and the password, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.
Unespecified error"

4) Additional food for thought:
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC) on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with Data Source Name (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <user name>/<password> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "Connection successful" appears (just for a test I enter incorrect user credentials and "Unable to connect" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE

The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.
All help is highly appreciated ,
Plamen

Did you find the solution to your problem?
If not, I think I may know.
Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?
Have you had any luck with your installation?
thanks,
Paul
