Can I install OSX Tiger server version on my G4 Powerbook?

Hi everyone...
I cannot find the disk(s) for my Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz PPC)... so I've resorted to purchasing them. I found (on ebay) a set of disks being described as such: "Apple Mac OS X Server 10.4 Tiger M9769Z/A (PPC)"
My obvious question is... will this work on my PB G4?
I'm attempting to clear out the laptop and give it away but would like to re-install the OS for the new owner (a neighbor's teen getting started in music with Garageband)...
Any quick advice?  Thx...

You may be able to call AppleCare directly to ask an OS X specialist about the availability of Replacement DVD system discs for Tiger 10.4, and Leopard 10.5, with white labels, for supported PowerPC macs; these were available and cost about $20. each DVD. These may not be available still, and knowledge of their exact availability may also be limited; if not plain unavailable (again.) They'd need the PB's serial number & method of payment, if they have the discs available I'd get both 10.4 & 10.5. And look online for iLife '05 or other.
If an OS X Tiger Server 10.4.x is older than a retail version which may have shipped with a computer when new, it may not work in that computer. You could try the installer, to see if it would, but it could be rejected, or fail part way into the process. So, in those instances, a retail OS X install DVD of later version is the path to installation, if you can't get the grey original install-restore disc set the computer shipped with. They have part numbers.
The server edition is a bit different than retail Tiger 10.4; you can see some versions of Server 10.4 Tiger as listed in the downloadable freely available MacTracker.ca database that works offline...
{from  http://mactracker.ca downloaded database OS X Server 10.4 Tiger}
Note the above list ALSO shows PowerPC and Universal for Intel-based Mac.
+System discs that shipped with a Mac, be it PPC or Intel, do not interchange.
The company welovemacs seems to have a similar Server version Tiger 10.4 with like product number and it does not say it can't work on specific PowerPC Macs (there is an Intel version, won't work in PPC) so for comparison here is there link: http://www.welovemacs.com/m9769za.html
Server versions of OS X can run in machines the standard one can, with a few exceptions in hardware; or in situations where the OS X version is older than the computer, so compatibility with hardware is lacking. In some cases, the installer may work OK, but would need additional Software Update to fully work, so the Combo update 10.4.11 may help.
There are some applications that may be missing from a retail or server edition of Tiger (or Leopard, etc) that would have been included in the computer's original as-shipped system and backup restore/install DVDs. The iLife applications would be on a separate retail disc set, a later iLife version than shipped with Tiger in a computer may be used in Tiger; to a limit. There (or was) a Support article on vintage iLife versions and OS X system they were supported in. Some bookmarks fail and links have changed, content moved or removed.
Several PowerBook 1.67GHz models exist, some shipped with Tiger 10.4.2 variants on their own DVDs so the Tiger Server would likely need to be later than 10.4.3 to work. But it would be worth a try, if you have it. Could be it may install (or not) but if it does, it may run in SafeBoot, and accept update to 10.4.11 Combo. Or you may be looking for a different installation DVD.
There may be a way around this, if you have a second Mac that can use the Tiger Server, and use it to install into the PowerBook, in Target Disk Mode, and see if it can accept the Combo update, then boot up. Not sure if this idea would even work. Been awhile and my target disk and firewire experiences are rusty!
Not sure if this helps...
Good luck

  • How can I install OSX Tiger from a DVD if my iBook G3 600mhz only has a CD?

I just purchased this iBook for my wife as a starter laptop for her as I love Macs and iBooks and I know she will be better off with one than the HP laptop she has. It is in pristine condition. The only problem is that the iBook is loaded with OS X 10.1.4 which is outdated and needs an upgrade. I found my old Tiger DVD and wanted to upgrade but the iBook only has a CD drive. I do not have an external DVD drive or such. What can I do? Can I copy the info off of the DVD onto a Pen Drive? Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you so much!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you want to run Mac OS X 10.4, you need to upgrade the iBook's RAM. Mac OS X 10.4 requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US
Although a 128 MB module would get the iBook up to the minimum required by Mac OS X 10.4, I strongly recommend that you maximize the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 144-pin, 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.
Instructions for adding the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
Once you get the RAM upgraded, you can attach the iBook G3 to your iBook G4 with a FireWire cable and use the iBook G4's optical drive to upgrade the iBook G3 with Mac OS X 10.4 (assuming that you have the full retail DVD, and not an upgrade DVD or one that came with another Mac).
Instructions for doing that can be found in these two articles:

  • Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini?

    Hey guys and girls...
Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini? If so how?

WHS is 64-bit. Genius are really not versed in Boot Camp or Windows, let alone anything not on the "approved" list of Windows versions.
Most of the problems are with burning ISO, or the SuperDrive. It should have seen the NTFS partition. Disk Utility is known to be trouble, burning it on your Mac Mine but iwth Windows 7....?
Seeing you have Windows 7, format the partition to NTFS 160GB you want and then exit and boot WHS installer.
Or run the install from Windows 7.
In past, WHS supported TimeMachine, streaming video, supported iTunes (that was broken/disabled it seems by Apple with 10.0), as well as even SuperDuper backups.
Main idea is to have some network attached drives.
    Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra2 Review
Newegg - HP StorageWorks X310 Windows Home Server
I have both a ISO and Burned it to a dvd useing windows 7 built in ISO burning software, Its a 64 bit copy (got from microsoft download website from my dads microsoft account).
It is enouth for the OS but it runs slowish on the mac mini (latest core 2 duo 2.4ghz model) The Idea was to have it backup my pc and laptop to a usb drive and act as a media centre pc (connected to av receaver and tv and on a gigabit network with a 2TB nas)
Since it looks like this may not work, whats the best way to make it into a media centure? mac osx? windows 7? plex? whats best and good?
I'd avoid USB like the plague. Why not use your PC instead? If I was going to use a Mini for WHS, I'd just use the Mini solely for Windows and not have OS X (you can boot OS X off an external drive anyway).

    Hi,
I just purchased and received Tiger from Amazon.com via a seller that is a legit make repair biz. The disk they sent me says: Mac OS X Tiger "CPU drop in DVD" also states that the software is part of a hardware bundle. I can not install from this disk it shows up in my startup prefs as "Mac OS X upgrade DVD". Was I sold a bogus DVD? Do I have to buy another version of the install?

  • How can I share a Tiger server's User database to a Panther server?

I need some help to set this up. Keep in mind I do not have a DNS server.
I have a Tiger server with Xserve and an older Panther server, both on the same local network. I have a whole bunch of users setup on the Tiger server. The Panther server does not have any users setup on it. I do not want to have to type in all the users all over again in the Panther server. What I'd like to be able to do is somehow share and syncronize the user database on the Tiger server with the Panther server.
I looked into the Open Directory settings but I do not understand what to do. How do I configure the Tiger and Panther servers respectively so the Panther server can sync with the Tiger server's users database. Is this possible? It seems like it with Open Directory, one being the Open Directory Master and the other being the Open Directory Replica? But I just don't understand how to set this up. Also the Panther OD settings seem quite different than Tiger's in Open Directory.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
It may be best to set up your 10.4 Server as an Open Directory Master first and then use Directory Access on your 10.3 Server to connect to the Tiger Server so as it can use the same User Database. This should be possible. OD Master/Replica relationships are not possible if the OS versions are different, even if the Master was 10.4.11 and the Replica was 10.4.10. You have no chance when its 10.4 and 10.3.
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/OpenDirectory_Adminv10.5.pdf
The link is for 10.5 but the basics are the same. This is a recent post that describes how to set up an OD Master:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1377046&tstart=0
I'm guessing that your 10.4 Server is Standalone and is serving simple file services only (AFP and possibly SMB/Windows). If this is the case (and I can't see how it can't be) then your users will be in the local NetInfo node. This will be the default node that is presented to you in WorkGroup Manager. You always get a warning that your are working in an invisible node (if you have not disabled this) when working in the Server's local node. Don't worry there is nothing wrong with the warning. WorkGroup Manager on Panther (10.3) Server works the same way.
You could if you wanted to simply export the Users and Groups from WGM in 10.4 and import them into WGM on 10.3. This should save you having to key them all in again. If the prospect of configuring internal DNS Services and all that goes with it seems to much for you then this is probably the simplest option. How do you do this? Launch WGM (its the same for both versions), select the Server Menu and select Export after first selecting desired users. Do the same for Groups. Use the same procedure in reverse. The Users and Groups files are not very big and can easily be transferred using a memory stick etc.
There are differences between the two versions which are mostly to do with Server Admin. In 10.4 Server there are more services. One of the Services will be Open Directory. In 10.4 Open Directory will only show a green light by the side of the service if it is in any role other than Standalone. Server Admin on 10.3 Server will always show the green light by the side of the Open Directory Service. This does not mean that it is an OD Master, you have to click on Settings and inspect the Role to see what it actually is.
You should be able to connect to a 10.3 Server with 10.4's Admin tools but don't be tempted to use Server Admin to configure/change anything on the 10.3 Server. You should not be able to go the other way 10.3 > 10.4 using the same tools.
Internal DNS Services are a requirement for LDAP Services (and pretty much everything else) on Servers generally, although for simple file services not absolutely necessary. Internal DNS Services do not have to be configured on the Server itself just as long as they are configured on another server, for example, on the same network. If these are the only two servers on the network then you will have to configure DNS Services on either one or both of them depending on what you want.
Not available on your 10.3 Server but is on your 10.4 Server are Access Control Lists (ACLs). This is a permissions model that is in addition to the standard POSIX permissions. Think carefully about how you provide permissions to your network clients if there is a mix of client OS, 10.3, 10.4 etc.
    Hope this helps, Tony

    David Vafa wrote:

it should work, according to this (rather old) discussion: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=2291517#post2291517.
Apple says in [this|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461] support article:
    Requirements
A full, single-disc version of Windows 7 (Mac OS X v10.6 or later only), Windows Vista, Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later. Boot Camp does not include Windows. You must provide your own properly licensed installation disc. Important: A Windows XP installation disc must include Service Pack 2 (SP2). You cannot install an earlier version of Windows and upgrade to Windows XP, nor install an earlier version of Windows XP and update it to SP2. _*Media Center, OEM, and upgrade versions of Windows XP are not recommended*_.
but they don't say it's not possible.
    good luck !

First please don't post your serial number in a public.  You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.6 on your system.  The DVD you are using must be the original that came with the computer before it will work.  What version of Mac OS X do you have on your system.  I am thinking it is a higher version then 10.6.2.

Help! accidentally install OSX Tiger into my backup harddisk!!
i lost all my backup files, work, my life! i have 2 HDD and one is suppose to be installed onto and the other one is my backup hdd..
what happened is i selected onto the wrong hard-disk...
is there anything i can do to recover back files that i installed over osx?
    any suggestion much appreciated

Hi Ma'e, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Installing OS X should not overwrite your files unless you chose "erase and install". If you chose "Archive and install" look for a folder on the top level of your hard drive called "Previous System".
If you did an "erase and install", If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it. Also, a service that has been recommended but I cannot personally endorse is DriveSavers.

I clean my disk totally by disk utility and now nothing comes up when holding option key. After a while this text comes with a black background, "No Bootable Device -- insert boot disk and press any key".
I think I erase everything, even boot settings!!!
Now, How can i install OSX now on my iMac?

What is the exact iMac model you have, please? If your model can run Snow Leopard then you need to install Snow Leopard from your installer discs. Snow Leopard must then be upgraded to 10.6.8 so you can upgrade to the version of OS X you had installed from the App Store.

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy

How many machines can I install the $79.99 version on?

If this is a personal purchase, not for a business, then the terms of sale for the Mac App Store state that you may install any software on all computers you "own or control". If it's for a business for installation on multiple computers that are each used by a different user, then basically the terms are one installation per purchase. Here is the official statement:
If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download a Mac App Store Product for use by either (a) a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) used by that individual that you own or control or (b) multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use a Mac App Store Product on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use a Mac App Store Product on a single Mac Computer located at a resource center or library. For the sake of clarity, each Mac Computer used serially by multiple users requires a separate license.

  • Can I install OS X Server on my Macbook Pro ?

    Q1)
Can I install OS X Server on my Macbook Pro (mid 2010) and use it as a server in my small office network ?
    Q2)
If i have OS X Server, can some of the client machines be windows Xp / 7 ? Will it work well ?

    A1: Yes.
A2: Yes.  (Though this is dependent on exactly what you're planning to do.  Windows Server and Active Directory will be a better choice for Windows distributed authentication, for instance.)
A3: are you going to have your MacBook Pro configured at a static IP address, with proper local DNS running on your server or some other LAN-local device (server provide and need local DNS, and referencing your ISP DNS won't work here), and will your server be available most- or full-time for the clients that are going to come to depend on the services from the server?  If not, then this approach is probably not the best one.  What happens to your environment and to any of your shared data if you're carrying your MacBook Pro server around and it happens to get dropped or lost or stolen?
A4: If you're "just" planning on serving storage to your other systems, then get a NAS device.   Something akin to an Time Capsule, or a Synology NAS widget, or similar network-attached storage devices are available, flexible, and cost-effective.  NAS devices are also usually rather less to manage than a full-blown server, too.
A5: If you have specific services or requirements in mind, somebody here might be able to provide a more specific answer.
TL;DR: Servers differ from clients in that a client outage generally adversely effects only one user, where a server outage generally adversely effects multiple users.
