Can I performa an In Place upgrade for 11gR2

Hi all,
I goofed a bit, I downloaded and installed 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0) and installed it. After installation I went looking for the patchsets. Then I learned that as of 11.2.0.2 these are not patchsets, per se, but full installs. (I'll know now to log onto My Oracle Support first!)
I've read the various threads hear regarding upgrades for 11g and none are quite the same - trying not to recover existing discussions.
Because I'm installing this as a backbone for Windchill (a CAD file data vault), and I will allow the Windchill installer to create my database and so my installation was software only. The Upgrade Guide e23633 and other documents advise against in-place upgrades. This is a Single-Instance Oracle database with no database created yet, Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition, x64.
In this forum and others as well as various blogs, have threads and articles on the relative difficulties people have had de-installing 11g.
Would you recommend I do an in-place Upgrade to get this to 11.2.0.3.0 or use the Oracle De-install Utility (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64) and actually start from scratch installing 11.2.0.3.0?
(I'm still downloading the 7! zip archives for Patchset 3, so I have a moment before I have to make this decision!)
Thank you,
PT

Thank you for the reply Srini, but it really didn't answer my question.
I've already been through the Upgrade Guide, that's what lead me to post my question for advice and suggestions. My question is, was it really necessary to perform the Out-of-Place Upgrade - the preferred method - when I had only installed "software only" of 11.2.0.1.0 and had no database created to upgrade? Save the time by simply an In-Place because I was already software only.
I fully understand reasons for and have practiced the preferred out-of-place upgrade. The fault tolerant undisturbed source database is the only way to go - when there is an actual database.
Unless someone advises against it, I'm going to simply run the 11.2.0.1 De-Installation Utility first, rather than upgrade in place. Then install back in the same base path the 11.2.0.3 version was. Not that it matters if it is in the same base path or not, but I'll de-install ~0.1 anyway, why not do it first since I have no database to upgrade.
Cheers,
PT

  • How can I perform an "in-place upgrade" on an unbootable Windows 7 machine or at least rebuild Safe Mode?

Some strange glitch has erased every single unlocked & unprotected file on my C: drive. It wasn't a virus because I checked autorun records and running processes using the respective Sysinternals utilities and didn't find anything suspicious.
I restored all data except for some system files and files that had "too long" of a path using shadow copies, which luckily for me were just a few hours old. Then, I decided to reboot into Recovery Environment and run System Restore from there. For even
more strange reason, the available restore points in RE were dated November 2010 (it's May 2012 right now) and the recent save dates are nowhere to be found.
To make matters worse, SFC doesn't work and Safe Mode shows BSOD after loading CLASSPNP.SYS.
    Error messages so far:
RE's startup repair tool: System files integrity check and repair error code 0x2
SFC: Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation
    BSOD: 0x7B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0, 0x0), but the HDD is perfectly fine - it's a dual-boot machine
    CBS.log: Failed to get CSI store. [HRESULT = 0x80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT]
What I need is a way to perform either an in-place upgrade without booting into Windows, or a way to fix the SXS Component Store, or rebuild the Safe Mode so that I could initiate upgrade install from there. A clean install isn't an option because I don't
have the luxury of time to run through the reboot cycles when re-installing and updating other software (I'm using Windows 8 CP for now as my work tools are mostly in the cloud).

It is not possible to do a repair install of a system unless you can boot to the system.
Have you checked the hard drive for problems? - download the manufacturer's test utility, create the disk, and run the extended checks.

  • Can the processor and ram be upgraded for an affordable price?

Okay, so I've had my PowerBook 15inch for about 6 or 7 years now. I love it. I have a number of reasons for wanting to keep it. Like ports that fit hard drives that newer MacBook Pro's don't seem to have. I'm a photographer and use it for a lot of digital imagery. How ever, it uses the PowerPC processor and I'm finding that a lot of websites won't let me use it without a intel based Mac. I'm having issues trying to download some PDF's. I'm told this is because I'm not using an intel based Mac. Finally, newer software is starting to require that I have an intel based Mac.
I'm on the move all the time and never at home. Much of my entertainment comes from Netflix and video games such as World of Warcraft. I can't stream video from Netflix and soon I won't be able to play video games on my PowerPC based Mac. I was laid off and I've got little money. I DO NOT want a PC, but can't afford a Mac at this time. I was wondering if the processor could be upgraded as well as the ram for an affordable price.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You can upgrade your RAM to 2GB. If you want to see if that will help for programs you run, bring up the Activity Monitor, on your hard drive in applications/utilities. On the system memory tab look at page ins and page outs. If page outs are 10% to 15%+ of page ins, you can use more memory for what you run. A page out is when there isn't enough physical memory to run everything, and the system writes some memory to disk to make room for something else. Too much of this can hamper performance.
On the CPU, as was pointed out, you can't upgrade it.

  • Can the pavillion dv7-6157 be upgraded for gaming?

I bought my son the pavillion dv7-6157nr two years ago and he is having trouble with graphics on the high end games he is playing. They freeze or crash. It has 8G DDR3 SDRam, 2 gen Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz - 3.10 turbo, and radeon HD 6770Ms graphics card. For video memory it says "itchable graphics"...what does that mean?  Can this computer be upgraded in a way that would help the graphics? Is there a graphics card or driver upgrade? Can more graphics memory be allocated?
I'm getting tired of hearing that laptops suck.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Here are the original factory specs for the HP Pavilion dv7-6157nr Entertainment Notebook Computer. This model shipped with an Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU and a Radeon HD 6770M GPU. "Swichable Graphics" is a system that depending on some system settings and the graphical load, will "switch" from the integrated Intel HD GPU to the AMD Radeon HD 6770M.
Based on the HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide, there is very little room to improve the performance of this computer. The AMD Radeon 6770M 2GB (this is what you have) is the best this system can accept. Maximum memory is 16GB (you have 8GB). And, in theory, the best CPU would be an Intel i7-2860QM, however there is no guaranty of this.
As far as drivers are concerned, please the HP Pavilion dv7-6157nr Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers page. The HP provided drivers appear out of date, however you may not be able to install newer driver directly from AMD or Intel.

  • Can i use another family members upgrade for an iPhone?

I currently have a Blackberry Bold with unlimited data, and the other line on my plan is just a basic phone. Currently walmart, has the iPhone 5 on sale for $127 but the sale goes off before my upgrade which is on 1/23/12. Back in October one vzw sales Rep told me j could transfer the other persons upgrade to my line to get an iPhone 5. But last night on the vzw support twitter someone told me that the iPhone 5 wasn't eligible for early upgrades therefor I couldn't use the other lines upgrade, that I could only use mine on 1/23? Does anybody know which is right?     Also could I keep my unlimited data if I was to transfer her upgrade? I know I couldn't if I used mine.

Yes if you transfer her upgrade you can A) get the iphone and B) keep your unlimited data and because your coming from a blackberry to iphone i advised doing backup assistance on your blackberry before the transfer but other than that youll have no problem with the activation just make sure that if you get it from walmart that you call to activate it otherwise they will activate it on the wrong line and cause all sorts of problems

If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Can't perform 802.11n enabler upgrade on MacBook!

I wonder if anybody could help?!
I've just bought the 802.11n enabler software for my 2Ghz MacBook. I have installed all updates suggested by Software Update, and when I run the 802.11n enabler it says that my hardware is not compatible with the upgrade.
I tried to manually install the 2007-002 and 2007-003 Airport Extreme updates, but when I run these I am not able to use them because it says the hard disc is not a valid volume.
Is there something I am missing?
    Thanks in advance!

I think you'll find that your MacBook is not compatible.
The only hardware that works are Macs that shipped with the 802.11n hardware already installed.
The compatible hardware were all MacPros and iMacs and laptops with Core 2 Duos. The Core Duo machines were earlier models.

  • How can i get the 4.01 upgrade for Final Cut Express 4.01

I have problems importing movieclips from my Sony HD camcorder (Sony HDR-CX350VE) in Final Cut Express. Surfing some Mac forums I jumped to the conclusion that I am not the only one. FCE sees the clips, but when I try to import them I get an error (idle). On one of the Mac forums I read that al lot of the AVCHD problems have been solved in the 4.0.1. update of FCE. I have 4.0 but I don't get the 4.01 update offered on Software update (although I have registered the software) and I can't find the 4.0.1 update on the Apple support or downloadsite. Does anywhone how I can get this update. It must exist because I found the releasenotes.

The Application is called Final Cut Express, but it wasn't at the top level. I put it there and tried Software-update again. And Yes it found the 4.01 update. Stupid of me and very clever of you, Tom!
    Thanks a lot

  • How to Perform In-Place Upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64

I'm trying to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows Vista Home Professional amd64 but the setup process fails stating that I need to remove Windows PowerShell prior to the upgrade.
    I didn't have http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 installed so I couldn't uninstall it.
I checked Windows features and PowerShell and the ISE were listed.
I tried removing it (via optionalfeatures.exe) but it fails with 'An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed.'
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried installing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried uninstalling http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928439 then removing the Windows feature - same error as above.
I tried performing an in-placce upgrade again and it continues to say that Windows PowerShell needs to be removed.
I cannot remove PowerShell (or the ISE) via ocsetup.exe as no such option exists according to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff716463.aspx
I tried removing it with DISM via /online /Remove-Package /Disable-Feature, but "DISM does not support servicing Windows Vista with the /Online option."
I tried sfc /scannow again - same 'Windows
    Resource Protection' error.
I tried the in-place upgrade again and it still needs PowerShell to be removed.
There have been chkdsks and reboots peppered throughout this process.
I don't know what else to try & I  feel like I'm stuck in a possibly crazy catch 22 situation.
Note: This is a Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit machine.
For those that need more history on how I got here, I'm going to refer you to my 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' post in the, incorrectly categorized, Windows 7 forums.  In short:
Whenever I run Windows updates, all the updates fail.  It doesn't matter if I do one, all or something in between - they all fail.
I ran sfc /scannow but that fails with 'Windows
Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'
I tried performing an offline scan as well but that failed with the same 'Windows
    Resource Protection' error.
Not sure what to do at this point and I don't know what logs would be helpful for you to review at this stage (cbs.log, windowsupdate.log, other?)

Please try below and check if we can boot normally now.
    1.
Boot to Recovery console2. Use the backup
System registry hiv to replace the current hiv

  • Error TF255050 when attempting to install reporting services in TFS 2013 in-place upgrade.

    Hi,
Last week we performed an in-place upgrade of our TFS 2012 server to TFS 2013.   During the upgrade process all went well until we hit reporting.   After placing the reporting server's name in the input and click populate URLs we get the TF255050
error.  We are running a dual tier setup, the reporting server is on a different server than tfs.  (Though the tfs database and the reporting database share the server).
Myself and my partner did a lot of digging on here and have tried most everything we could find to no avail.
-We have ensured myself(installer) and the tfs service account are local admins on both machines
-Sql client connectivity tools are installed
-WMI seems configured correctly when compared to other resolutions to this issue others have posted
    note: this site
ProBlog on artiso.com was mentioned in several posts as part of a resolution but is a broken link.
-I can connect to the reporting services manager from the tfs server without a problem, as both myself and the tfs service.
-I've followed suggestions mentioned in this post (ERROR (TF255050)
    while configuring Reporting Services)
-I've also looked into windows logs on both machines and really seen nothing useful.  We do know that we can successfully talk to sql server though, as the TFS 2013 install already did so.
I could really use some direction/help on the issue.
    Thanks

    Hi Kyleco,
    Thanks for your post.
Your TFS 2013’s SQL Server instance and the Reporting Server installed on the same machine?
On your TFS 2013 Server machine, open the SQL Server Management Studio and try connect to your Reporting Server, ensure can connect successfully.
You didn’t configure the Reporting Server for your TFS 2012 Server? If yes, we suggest you in-place upgrade to TFS 2013 Server first, then manually configure the Reporting Server for your TFS 2013 Server:

  • In-place upgrade Windows 2008 to 2008R2 and effects on SharePoint

I have a SharePoint farm, with a WFE running on Windows 2008 64 bit. THe APP and SQL server both use 2008R2. It's a complicated setup, with many custom applications. Rather than a fresh install, we would prefer to maintain our current applications and configuration.
Can I perform an in-place 2008R2 upgrade? Will it affect SharePoint? The Farm?
    Backup strategies?
    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,
Operating System in place upgrade is NOT supported with SharePoint 2010. It is recommended that building a new Win2008 R2 and restoring a backup of your SharePoint 2010.

So i need this to work as an in place upgrade to 2008I feel your pain, but any company worth their salt will (meaning the vendor) should know that you cannot simply perform an in-place upgrade of a Server OS.
Really the proper method is to backup everything, format and install Server 2008 (are you limited to 32-bit?), restore data/reinstall software. What's the reasoning for the upgrade? 2003 EOL or something else?
Do you have a guarantee that the software will even work on...

    Hello everyone.
We seem to be having an issue when doing an in place upgrade on our windows 2003 R2 server to go to Windows 2008. Every time we try and do the upgrade, once the server reboots it blue screens with no real information. Just mentioned to try and do a check disk to check for hard drive issues.
It gives us the option to go the earlier version of windows (back to 2003 R2) but nothing we have tried has succeeded so far.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • 'In place' upgrade from 7.8 to 8.1

    Hi!
I'm kicking off some planning around an upgrade from 7.8 to 8.1 / 8.2 Public Sector. Aside from the repository and non-repository code item work, I've started to think about the logistics of upgrading the actual software. Our plan is to keep the phyiscal architecture as is, as it's more than capable of supporting 8.1. We're running completely on Win2K3 with an Oracle 10g back end DB.
Has anyone performed an 'in place' upgrade from 7.8 to 8.1? That is, starting cutover with 7.8 running on a set of phyiscal servers and finishing cutover with 8.1 running on the same set of machines?
I'm thinking along the lines of a 2 phase cutover, taking a weekend to install software, configure new components (such as BI Publisher, as we're replacing Actuate at this point) and doing as much 'zero impact' work as possible. This will be an outage weekend, where we take 7.8 offline to do any work and bring it all back up at the end. The second phase would be the database upgrade, SRF, repository and non-repository element deployment, along with bringing up the 8.1 system.
I have a few obvious thoughts, such as installing Gateway and Server components on machines already running 7.8 versions. CFG and siebns settings should be kept distinct in different installation folders, but does Siebel store anything in the registry? I'm also aware that the Gateway and Component ports will be the same / conflicting, but this shouldn't be a problem if only one set of services are running at any given time.
I'm also concerned that we cannot do the Gateway and Server installation and config without having an 8.1 database already in place. Is that the case? If not, I'm hoping we can get the installations and component group allocation and configuration done without affecting the 7.8 service. We can then take full server backups and be ready to 'just' do a database upgrade on the second cutover date.
Anyway, I'd really appreciate any thoughts or experiences that you all may have or have had on such a plan.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
From your message, I understand that you have 8 siebel servers and 2 for oracle database (Correct me if I am wrong). For the production environment you will need to remove all siebel components from at least one system each for gateway, siebel server and webserver. Do ensure that your database is properly backed up before proceeding with a db upgrade.
Do note that removing one server each will be hitting your application very hard and hence it will be great if you proceed only during a long weekend or sometime giving you a good time duration to do the upgrade and do the system checks also. Also I would suggest to do siebel install and oracle db upgrade in one go. Please consult your db admin for the best way forward in this.
Once your 8.1 installation is running do the import of all the integration points that you have for the older system and then verify their functioning with your installation. Only when everything you need appears to be working as per the previous system, shut down the older system and remove existing Siebel components and do the necessary installations.
You may like to see this site "http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31104_02/books/SiebInstUNIX/SiebInstCOM_InstGateway3.html" , "http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E05553_01/books/SiebInstUNIX/SiebInstCOM_InstSiebSrvr3.html" and "http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E05553_01/books/SiebInstUNIX/SiebInstCOM_InstSWSE3.html" for pointers in case you are not comfortable removing siebel server components from your production environments.

I compared the registry with a working system but the Counters - and all other keys - looked fine.
At the same time as upgrading a DC a colleague was updating an unrelated server, and he started to see similar events in the event log (but for the Dell OpenManage Essentials service, not ADWS). The error was complaining about KERNELBASE.dll which set my
spider sense tingling. We knew that this server had Windows Updates pending. Fully updating it solved the problem on that server.
I solved the ADWS problem in the end by fully Windows Updating the DC. In particular, the ADWS Service started successfully after installing KB2919355 and rebooting. That also
'unlocked' a further 59 updates pending.
After the in-place upgrade I always fully Windows Update but I'm 99% certain that KB2919355 did NOT show up when I did a Check for Updates straight after a reboot so I thought the DC was up-to-date. I then spent hours investigating the ADWS problem and rebooted
as part of the diagnostics. It was then that I noticed on the logon screen that there were updates pending...
Moral of the story? Windows Update, then Update again, and again, and again. The length of time it takes to Windows Update after an upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012R2 is painful though.
