Can I use extra MBP RAM in a G5?

I haev an extra 512MB PC2-5300 DDR2 module left over from my Intel MacBook Pro.
Can I install it in a friend's G5 iMac?
I know the specs are different but I thought if it is faster/better it would work.

The RAM you mentioned will only fit an iSight G5 iMac.

Can I use my MBP while flying?
Tech specs say maximum altitude is 10,000 feet - does that mean I cant turn it on at 30,000 feet?

I have used my MacBook Pro at 30,000 feet many times, and I have never had any problems.
Cabins are pressurized at 8,000 feet, so you are well within the limits.

  • Can I use the DDR3 ram in Macbook 2.1?

Can I use the DDR3 RAM that I took ou from my Mac Mini in my Macbook 2.1? The original ram in the Macbook is DDR2!

Unfortunately DDR3 and DDR2 are not compatible.  They also use physically different sockets and each will not fit in the other.

  • Can I use DDR2/667 ram in a machine wants DDR2/533 ram?

I searched all over these forums, googled my eyes out, read the dev note for my machine and could not find a definitive answer...
    The scenario is this: I have a PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) M9590LL/A, that is spec'd for DDR2/533 or PC2-4200.
I have a friend who just bought a 24" Intel iMac and upgraded the ram to 2 GB, thus he has 2 pieces of 512 mb DDR2/667 that are unused.
He will sell them to me at a very good price. Will they work in my machine? Can you use FASTER ram and will it clock down to the proper speed in a machine that is looking for slower ram?
Right now in almost all places online the DDR2/533 chips are MORE expensive than the DDR2/667 chips.
Right now my machine still has the stock of 512 mb of DDR2/533 ram (2 pieces of 256 mb).
Another friend told me to just put the chips in and see if they will work, I do not want to do this if there is some minor voltage difference that will either damage the motherboard or the DDR2/667 chips or both.
I know in the PeeCee world, you can use PC133 ram in systems that need PC100, and DDR/333 ram in systems that need DDR/266, and likewise DDR/400 in systems that are looking for DDR/333, but I remember reading that DDR2 ram is more sensitive to BUS speed and voltage than DDR(1) ram.
    Any ideas?
    Please help me :>
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if you found a similar form factor module with a
higher spec than Apple's official, I would not put it
in the machine. Mac OS X can be very particular
about the kind of RAM that is installed, and panic if
the wrong kind is installed, or cause problems such
as unexpectedly quitting applications. Follow the
specs to the letter. See my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html#RAM
So you are basically saying that higher-clocked ram will not spec down to run slower?
Thanks for the info. I will give a good read to the link here to your FAQ.

  • Can I use my MBP 15 reboot CD to wipe a hard drive of a 13 inch MBP??

I recently upgraded from my (late 2008/Early 2009?) 13 inch Macbook Pro to a brand spanking new 15 inch Macbook Pro, i5. I wanted to give away the 13 inch to a friend, however I lost the wipeout disks for that a long time ago and don't want all of my crap (and personal information) left on it.
Can I use the new disks that I got for my 15 inch, or would i have to acquire the disks from elsewhere?
    Thanks!

No. The gray discs that come with a Mac will only boot that particular model, built at about the same time.
would i have to acquire the disks from elsewhere?
Yes. Contact AppleCare, give them the serial number, and they'll send a new set for a small fee. The new owner will need them anyway.

  • A Simple Question - Can i use CL3 DDR400 RAM with 848P?

I've posted earlier but no-one had come back to me and if memory is to blame i need to get this replaced first thing in the morning asap as this is critical.
Can i use PC3200 DDR400 CL3 memory in an MSI 848P or not?
I'm using an Intel P4 2.2Ghz 533 CPU if that counts?.... so the memory is only running at 333Mhz...
I'm trying to use 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL3 and i'm getting nothing but problems such as my PC refusing to boot up or reboot properly and also the following messages :-
'DRAM TIMING IS TOO TIGHTLY SO RELOAD TIMING'
I havn't set any timing - what does this mean??????
In the BIOS section 'DRAM TIMING SETTING' There is only a CAS Latency option for 2 or 2.5 - no option for 3?
Does all of this mean that CL3 type DDR can't be used or is in-compatible with the 848P?
If so, there was no mention of this in the product spec or anything relating to this on the MSI website.
Please can somebody, anybody tell me?

Just as I've replied in your other thread, you've to start playing with the timings instead of the SPD timings...

  • How can I use my MBP's(late 2008) display as a secondary screen for MCP retina display?

I've got my new MBP retina dispaly and I would like to use my old MBP as a secondary display.
Is there any way to do this without installing different types of software like ScreenRecycler?
I tried to connect the only cable I have which is an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable but nothing really happened!

Thanks It actually works when you want to share the screen.
However I'm looking for using the old MBP's screen as a secondary display so that I can have two screens like an external monitor.
Also when you use the share screen it has some delay because of the wireless network.

  • Can i use 4gb of ram after 10.6 upgrade on MA589LL?

Hello, I am new to Mac.
I have a late 2006 iMac (MA589LL) that I have upgraded to 3GB of RAM. It has 10.4.11 on it but i have 10.6 in the mail. The specs say that it is limited to 3GB of Ram but it also says that the hardware will support 2 x 2GB sticks but the OS will only use 3GB. I am assuming that this is due to 32 Bit OS. If I upgrade to 10.6 or even 10.7 will that give me the 64 Bit OS and allow me to utilize the full 4GB?
Thank for any help and suggestions to a new Mac user,

Here are the complete specs for your model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
Upgrading to 10.6. or 10.7 will not change the fact that it will only address 3 GB; personally, I'd stay with 10.6 because Lion is somewhat of a memory hog and 3 GB will be stretching it - you will not be happy with the performance. From what I've read, yours can read 3.1 or 3.2 GB if you install 4 - I used to have the same (but 24") model and stayed with 3 GB. And that will not change by installing Lion.

  • Using OEM MBP RAM in my iMAC

My brand new iMac is behaving funky and I think it's a RAM issue. Quite often I am getting transparent lines in the icons on my Dock. Also, when running semi-intensive apps like Google SketchUp (3D modeling) or video editing apps, I constantly get the "spinning ball". Pardon my terms, I'm a Mac noob.
A few months ago I bought a MBP (17" 2.6 C2D), and upgraded the 2gRAM to 4g of Crucial RAM with no problem. Last month when I bought my iMac (20" 2.6 C2D), I took the (2) 1gb sticks of Apple OEM RAM and put them in the iMac.
Do any of you know of any known issues with this, or have any guesses?
I have confirmed that both sticks are properly seated, and my system reports seeing 2 gigs.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi BigStackGuy: I'm not sure if this will be causing your issues, but, I believe the RAM for the latest generation of iMacs is 800mHz speed. The RAM used in your MacBook Pro will be 667mHz speed. Hope this helps

  • Can I use my MBP Retina to record a podcast?

    Hi everyone,
I have been asked to host a Podcast for a club I run. I have recorded videos and instructional demos etc on my MBP Retina before, but just using the onboard mic rather than anything external.
Myself on my own in a room worked perfectly.
Would I be able to have 3/4 fella's around the table, MBPR in the middle, hit record and then have all of us chatting through an agenda and record to a suitable level?
Without going to the expense of buying 1/2/3 external microphones I mean.

    Anybody?
    No?

  • Can I use HP XW8400 ram in my Mac Pro

    Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy 4 x 2GB of RAM which is/appears to be the same spec as that fitted in the HP XW8400 workstation. I'd rather buy Apple branded but it is too expensive.
Can anyone confirm this RAM will be compatible please [it will have the large heat sinks fitted]
    Thanks

Just looked on Crucial.com and specs are: -
    HP XW8400
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT570802
    Mac Pro 2006
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT685422
Different part numbers as they have different heat sinks but looks like it's a match; just would like an expert to confirm if possible please

  • Can I use My MBP as a display?

If I connect a multi function video appliance (digital plot charter, GPS and radar unit) through my DVI connection, will my laptop act as a monitor for this appliance? In this mode, I would suspect the hard drive will not be active and the power consumption should not be more than with a conventional monitor? Many thanks in advance.

If I connect a multi function video appliance (digital plot charter, GPS and radar unit) through my DVI connection, will my laptop act as a monitor for this appliance?
No; the DVI port is for video out from the computer, not video in. Using the MacBook Pro as a monitor for another device requires creating a VNC system.
