Can only save 32768 colors in quicktime and avi

Hi,
I am using a variation of the JpegImagesToMovie program to store int[] arrays of pixels to quicktime and avi movies. I created a test movie with frames of size 256x256 such that each from contains a gradient of black to white from the top downwards. Since there are 256 shades of grey, I expected a perfectly smooth gradient; however, it only created 32 shades of grey (meaning, it is only using 5-bits of each color channel, hence only 32768 colors total). I set the format as:
      format = new RGBFormat(
          new Dimension(width, height),
          this.length = width*height,
          int[].class,
          frameRate,
          32,
          0x00ff0000,
          0x0000ff00,
          0x000000ff,
          1,
          width,
          Format.FALSE,
          RGBFormat.BIG_ENDIAN);and I am created the colors as:
data[index] = (red << 16) | (green << 8) | blue; where red, green and blue are ints equal to the y-coordinate of the pixel I am setting.
I also tried specifying 24-bit color as opposed to 32-bit. Has any one else seen this effect? Any suggestions? Thanks,

Turns out all I needed was to set the compression format as so:
  TrackControl tcs[] = processor.getTrackControls();
    for(int i = 0; i < tcs.length; i++) {
      TrackControl c = tcs;
Format f = c.getFormat();
if (f instanceof VideoFormat) {
Format[] fmt = c.getSupportedFormats();
if ((fmt != null) && (fmt.length > 0)) {
for(int j = 0; j < fmt.length; j++) {
if ("MPG4".equals(fmt[j].getEncoding())) {
c.setFormat(fmt[j]);
