Can't Connect to My Time Capsule Backups, Please Help!!!

I have been using Time Machine/Time Capsule to back my data up for over a year. I bought a new MacBook Pro this morning. I did not want to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything over because there were many bugs and corruptions on my old disk and was scared that would all be transferred to my new machine. It was time for a fresh start.
I set up my new computer and transferred most of the files I needed via a flash drive. I am now trying to set up my MacBook Pro to connect to my Time Capsule backup disk via Time Machine, but once I enter Time Machine it does not allow me to go "back in time" to see all of my previous backups and restore points. There are some really important files I am trying to get to, but this computer isnt connecting to the Time Capsule backups. The old computer has already been completely reformatted, but it is still able to access the Time Capsule backups.
I have done some internet research and learned that Time Machine uses a computer's ethernet MAC address to allow access. There are some codes posted on various websites that allow to alter what Time Machine thinks you MAC address is so that you can access your backups with a new computer/different logic board. None of these Terminal workarounds worked for me. The Genius Bar and Apple Care couldn't help either.
I am hoping somebody can help me out. I understand I can use my old computer to get into Time Machine and retrieve what I need then transfer those to the new machine. But there must be a way to allow a new computer to fully access Time Capsule backups, but curiously, I can't find it. I rather have my new computer have full access because I am selling the old laptop and so I wont be able to use it to access my backups any longer.
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope that gives someone all the facts required to both understand what I am saying and help me fix the problem.
-Amir

Right now it is just empty because I have unmounted and disconnected my Time Capsule. I'm trying a low-tech work around to see if this works, but much rather do it the "right way."
What I am doing is this:
(1) Use Migration Assistant to copy everything from the Time Capsule to the new machine (this is exactly what I was trying to avoid initially). Migration Assistant has been copying files for about 5 hours now (still not sure what is going to happen).
(2) Create a full backup on Time Capsule with my MacBook Pro now that it has everything from the Time Capsule on it.
(3) Do a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
(4) Hopefully, have the fresh start on my machine I wanted, but still have access to at least one archived copy of my old computer and files/folders.
Does this make sense? Basically, the new machine does not allow me to access the old backups. So I am handicapping the machine now by reverting to my old settings via Migration Assistant, will back that up, then start all over from scratch again but hopefully have the peace of mind that my files are not gone because I will at least have that one copy of all my old copies in a Time Capsule backup that the new machine can access.

  • I purchased a new router and now I can not connect to my time capsule. What should I do?

In the past, I have just used my time capsule to back up my macbook pro. It connected wirelessly and everything worked great. I recently purchased a new router and now I cannot connect to the time capsule. Please help!

Is that other router the "main" one?  If so, you'll have to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the network created by that router.  The details of how to do that and whether it's possible may depend on the brand and model of that router, but I have no details on that.

  • I can't connect with the Time Capsule.

    Hello everyone,
Some years ago, I bought a Time Capsule. Until now, I didn't want to use it as an extern HD.
    So I tried today.
I am using it for a year now, as main router. Several computers and iDevices are using it.
Because I had forgotten some things - and I hadn't wrote it down - I decided  to reset it and configure it again.
Since then, the internet has become slower - and I my Macbook pro can't connect to the Time Capsule's disk.
In Finder's everything fine. Left, under 'Shared', I can see the Time Capsule as a HD.
When I click on it, I see: "No Connection". Then I select "Connect As", and I fill in the Time Capsule password.
It tries to connect a few minutes, but then I get the message:
"The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
In the Airport Utility, there's a green light.
*My firmware has the newest updates
    *I am using Snow Leopard
*I am using newest update of the Airport Utility
*Since reset, internet's fine but a bit slower.
    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
    Hope you can help me!

What actual model is the TC.. the A1xxx number from the rubber base mat???
As they age they become unreliable. Some earlier and some at 3year mark.
It greatly depends on the setup of the existing network.
I would recommend a downgrade in the TC firmware.. as with Snow Leopard there is no advantage to you in the later firmware.
Go to the airport utility and select firmware update.. hold down the option key when you make the selection and all the previous versions available for your model will come up. I recommend using 7.5.2
Do another reset of the device. This time a full factory reset.. and start the configuration again.
Ignore update to firmware requests.. turn off the reminder.
Set all names to SMB standard. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. TC name, wireless names, hard disk name.
For wireless I recommend you use wpa2 security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Set to manual for radio channels and test 1, 6, 11 in turn for the best.
Depending on the broadband you use, the TC must be in router or bridge mode.. tell us more if you need help for this.
If you think the TC is slowing you down, do a test with direct connection to the broadband modem and give us the speed comparison.. direct and via the TC ethernet or wireless.. tell us which though.. wireless will always be slower than ethernet.
If you have issues still with the hard disk it might need some work.. older models the disk might need to be erased .. please open any time machine backup and run a verify.

    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
Yes, but the TC is designed primarily for Time Machine.. if you store files, there is no method in the TC to back up those files.. do not make them the only store.
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
You cannot partition a TC .. not without removing the disk. You can create a disk image.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
You can use multiple devices with TM. Be aware you need lots of free space for this to be successful. So you need to add up the total you want to backup on each computer.. and at least double it.

  • Hello. My mac can't connect to my time capsule. There is no response and I can't put it back to the originals definitions because all my files are there and I can´t loose them. (sorry about my bad english, but I really need help!)

Hello. My mac can't connect to my time capsule. There is no response and I can't put it back to the originals definitions because all my files are there and I can´t loose them. (sorry about my bad english, but I really need help!)

Your files are unaffected by a reset.. no reset via the reset button on the TC harms, deletes or does anything to your files.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Here is how to do a fully manual setup for TC which is sometimes necessary with Mavericks in particular.
Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule

  • Upgraded MobileMe to iCloud and now can't connect to my Time Capsule at home with Back to My Mac

I upgraded my MobileMe account to iCloud yesterday and now I can't connect to my Time Capsule when I am away from my home network.  I had been able to using Back to My Mac with my MobileMe account.  Now the airport utility still only shows a mobileme option in the advanced settings.  Is there an update for the time capsule so that I can input my iCloud information?

Apparently this isn't possible. This was never discussed publicly before the iCloud launch. All that was said was Back to my Mac would continue working. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything, even after the iCloud launch. Made the switch, my AirPort started yelling at me because of MobileMe credentials. I've been waiting for an AirPort update but have still been digging. Just found this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4867
Talk about a footnote. This should have its own article, not be like, "Oh everything will still work great! ... ... ...
    Except for AirPort disk sharing."
I'm not too happy about this.

How can I do a complete Time Capsule backup on an external USB hard disc with the new AirPort utility V6?
It was possible in the AirPort utility V5, but in the new V6 I can't find this option.

Download and use 5.6.. the other non-toy version of Apple's Airport Utilities.

  • Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Sure, if the printers connect using the Ethernet port, you have 3 ports on the Time Capsule.
If the printers connect using wireless only, the Time Capsule will support up to 50 connections.
If your printers connect using USB, then you will need a powered USB hub. Something like this, for example:

  • Suddenly can't connect to my Time Capsule

I have an Air with only 128GB of storage so I keep my iTunes library on my Time Capsule.
Yesterday I was downloading an iTunes U episode and it was going straight to my library on the Capsule. I went to Finder to move some folders around in my Time Capsule but it wouldn't connect. I would hit "connect as" and it would say "The drive Data can't be disconnected because it is in use by iTunes." I wasn't sure what was happening but I let the iTunes U episode download (remember, it was downloading straight to the Time Capsule so I know it was connecting) and then I went to try to connect to the Time Capsule again. Now it says "Connection Failed" and if I try to hit "Connect As" it doesn't give me any prompts for username or password or anything it just says "There was a problem connecting to the server "The Tardis". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator." Wireless is working just fine and Airport Utility is showing a connection, it just won't actually connect.
I have no idea where to go from here. Why won't it connect?
    Help?

Try a restart.. if that fails you will need to do a reset on the TC.. that will not affect what you have on the hard disk but you will need to redo the settings so try to use the same name for TC and passwords etc.. otherwise you can redirect the itunes to the library store again.
BTW this is why we tell people the TC is unsuitable target for itunes.
Unless you have been backing it up.. if the itunes library has been corrupted it is lost. There is no backup or recovery in the TC.

  • Can not connect to airport time capsule

Here is what the current situation is:
I can setup the Airport Time Capsule (3GB) form my Mavericks 10.9.4 MacBookAir 2013 using AirPort Utility. However, after setup, I cannot connect to the time capsule using many of the standard ways. Trying both connections of wired and wireless. I have tried:
    1. Connecting to the Time Capsule using Time Machine (which I can see the Time Capsule Drive as a selection), and I always get the error "There was a problem connecting to the server “XXXXXX”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator."
    2. Using Finder side bar under Shared (which I can see the Time Capsule Drive as a selection), clicking on it, always says Connection Failed at the top of the window. Clicking the Connect As... button results in the same error message as #1.
    3. Using Finder, connect to server option, entering the name of the time capsule with .local at the end, and using the ip address and it always returns the same error as #1.
Trying option #3 and looking at the Console for error messages always produces these two messages:
    Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1093]: ERROR: AFP_CreateSessionRef - AFPLoadModules failed 22
Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1154]: NewAFPLoadModules: bootstrap_look_up failed Unknown service name
Any help would be much appreciated. My computer has security scripts run on it that my company wrote inhouse and not sure exactly what is locked down and not locked down. Thank you.

    Using method 3.. try
SMB://TCname.local or SMB://TCIPaddress (I hope obvious you replace with actual name or actual IP).. Please use names that are SMB compatible.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    No luck try CIFS:// etc.
    This forces it to SMB1.
No luck ping the TC in terminal.. does it respond??
Do you have ipv6 set ot link-local only in the computer??
Your company may have locked you out.. I would not be surprised. Are you running a vpn on the computer whilst trying to connect to the local network. That will fail and the ping test will show you why.
    Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1093]: ERROR: AFP_CreateSessionRef - AFPLoadModules failed 22
Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1154]: NewAFPLoadModules: bootstrap_look_up failed Unknown service name
Interesting.. it is blocking AFP perhaps. AFP modules refused.. I do not know the errors well enough but if AFP fails there is a good chance TM won't work. So even if you can mount and access the disk I am not sure you can do TM backups.

  • Can I connect to my Time Capsule from any where via the internet ?

I want to be able to connect to my Time Capsule when I'm on the road. How can I do so?

Do a google for remote time capsule connection.
Yes, it is very easy using a Mac if you have static public IP and the TC is the main router.
It can be done via iCloud and BTMM.. again just look it up.
It is very very hard to do it without iCloud Lion and latest TC firmware or static IP.
It should be accessed by AFP.. means no windows machines.
It should be considered carefully as there are some risks.. passwords my not be exchanged encrypted..
The right way is vpn using a vpn router and TC in bridge.

  • Can't connect to a Time Machine backup disk

I have erased my TM via Airport Utility
AirPort Utility 6.x: Erase an AirPort Time Capsule disk
So far so good...But now, I am unable to open TM, when I do it opens momentarily, then closes with message "Can't conect to a Time Machine backup disk".
I have turned off TM as I do not want to use the TM as backup..I want to use it as an EHD and transfer data to the disk manually (not by automatic TM backups).
    How can I do this?

No. It is not in Finder at all..only I can see the Airport Capusle (on the left side) under "Shared"...but this does not allow for any data transfer.
It should show under "Devices", and allow for data transfer....don't know how to fix this one..

  • Can´t connect remotely to Time Capsule

    Hi,
since I installed OS X Maverick, I cannot connect to my Time Capsule remotely anymore. Simple says "Connection failed". Under "Connect As" it basically says the same in a longer message. Under the previous system it worked fine.
I have setup Time Capsule to store my login/pwd of the  iCloud account and "Back to my Mac" in the iCloud settings on my computer. It´s an older Mac Book Pro 17".
Does anyone else have this problem and maybe solved it?
    Thanks for the help!

Ok. . but you are probably in deep shitzen..
    1. Yosemite clearly has issues.
    2. If you have setup the TC correctly behind the FIOS router in bridge mode you cannot use BTMM .. it is simply not going to work.
You can use one of the other methods.
See AirPort Disk - Remote Access (3 Methods)
Let me also add, if you want to do this in a business manner.. I would add a method 4.. vpn.
Connect a suitable vpn router to your FIOS and put your TC in bridge to that. Forward whatever ports are required to your vpn router so it is able to establish the tunnel to the outside world.
From a business practice point of view this is the right way to do things.. you may need specialised help to get this working.. you might also need business ISP account with static IP. BTMM is a home method.. avoiding the complexity of vpn, which is also less than 100% reliable.. no business would rely on such a method. Nor on using domestic accounts.. remember you are treating your home setup as your business. It should be the other way around. The information you need should be at your business location and you link to it from home.
If you actually need this access then do it right. OR get a USB drive and make a clone of the files so you can carry them with you . .or use cloud services.. which are far more reliable albeit you cannot store as much without fairly high cost.

  • TS1398 I can't connect to my Time Capsule wi-fi with my iPhone.

I recently got internet through Time Warner which I believe is DSL.  I connected everything up to my Time Capsule, and the light is green. I got onto my Macbook and updated the firmware for the Time Capsule and am able to get on the internet connected to the Time Capsule with no problem what so ever.  I got my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 4s and try to connect to the Time Capsule, I enter the password and all it does is have the loading ring and won't connect to it.  On my iPhones I've tried to renew the lease, reset my network settings, turn off and on the wifi, hard reset, turn off the phone normal, and still nothing.  On my Time Capsule I've tried to disconnect and reconnect everything, I've tried to restart my modem and reconnect it.  It's still the same problem I can connect just fine with the wifi on my Macbook, but my iPhones just have the loading ring and never connect.  What can I do?

I had the same issue.  Our iphone 4s connected to the time capsule just fine, but the older iphone 4 would not.  I turned off the wireless n setting in the time capsule and set it for 802.11b/g only and it worked fine.  The time capsule should have negotiated the 802.11g setting for the iphone 4 but it did not.  Not a great solution but the g was fast enough to support our cable internet speed of about 25Mbit/s.

  • I can't connect to my time capsule. the machine is on but the message is the backup disk is not available.

My Mac desktop has not backed up to my time capsule since July 10th.  The time capsule is on and plugged in but the message reads that the backup disk is not available.  What can I do?

It helps to know what OS you are running on the Mac.. let me guess.. Mavericks.. since it is the most buggy on the network side.. although Lion and ML are also lacking the rock solid nature of Snow Leopard.
Have you done the simple things.. ??
    ie reboot the TC?
No luck then reboot the network.
No luck then I would recommend a complete reset of the TC.
I have outlined how to do this many times.
eg Re: Why the connection from Air to Time Capsule is lost suddenly?
As you will see this is not something unusual.
Apple has a document.. very well hidden.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
It is helpful (although it doesn't go far enough IMHO).
Try what I have suggested and tell me how it goes.. more problems then also give me more info.
Full network info and details on the OS you are running.

  • Can't connect to my Time Capsule!!

My Time Capsule was working perfectly except it wouldn't let me back my data up to it, so I reboot it and now the backups work. However, now another problem presented itself. It won't let my WiFi devices connect to it. It's name appears and disappears on the Available WiFi Networks list and doesn't give the devices enough time to connect to it before disappearing from the list. My MacBook and iMac connect to it almost every time but the iPhones won't. I tried rebooting it one more time to see if maybe the problem would get fixed then, and it didn't. I need to know what to do ASAP. I can't access the internet from my mobile devices in my own home, that's a big problem since I don't have unlimited 3G! HELP.

    Are you on Mountain Lion?
I recommend using 5.6 utility even if you have to jig it as it will not load straight into ML.. it is actually compatible.. first thing I got ML on a MBP just recently was to load 5.6 utility.. you simply unpkg the dmg file you download.. and drag the actual utility into the correct directory. There are plenty of posts .. just google.
Lock the TC to use channel 1, 6, or 11 at 2.4ghz. The phones seem very sensitive to flipping channels.
With the 5.6 utility you have much more control over the TC.
Of course if you still run Lion on either computer then just load it.
