Can't drag files/folders in list view

This has happened on two Macs now. Once on a 2x3Ghz Dual Core MacPro on 10.5 and most recently on the latest X-Serve on 10.5 Server. On the MacPro, I wound up reinstalling the OS since I wasn't very far along in the setup. The X-Serve is still malfunctioning.
The only way to drag something is to put the window in either icon or column view.
Logging out and in as another user doesn't temporarily alleviate or fix the problem. Restarting either.
Booting to the 10.5 disk and repairing system disk permissions doesn't fix.
There is a mention of this on this post but I see no fix for the problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5667131&#5667131
This youtube post (strange forum...) shows the problem. (I do not have the copy/paste problem though.)

Since this has happened twice to me within three weeks, I imagine there must be others this has happened to.
Anyone have any ideas?
MORE DETAILS: When both computers came out of the box, dragging worked but somewhere along the way, dragging stopped working. The Mac Pro was a factory install and the X-Serve was a format and install (the way I usually do things.) Both setups are vanilla - no third party apps yet! On the X-Serve, I did a custom install leaving out the extra fonts, languages and I pared down the printers installed.
Thanks

LaunchServices is often implicated in drag & drop issues.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
Code:
<pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Can't drag files, folders, or emails

I can no longer drag files from one folder to another, or folders, or Outlook emails into folders.  I've seen others having this problem.  is there a fix?  Is apple working on one?  This is basic computer functionality and a serious bug.  any thoughts appreciated.  I have restarted and other simple suggestions in forums.  I believe this to be a bug in Mountain Lion and Mavericks, based on what I've read.  But this is a staggering impediment to computer usage.

Weird solution.  I disconnected the nice Logitech mouse and went back to the little Apple mouse that came with the iMac, and it works correctly, dragging emails to folders, files to folders, etc.

  • Finder problem-can't sort some folders in list view

    Hi,
I have a problem with some of my folders in Finder. I prefer to use 'list' view when working in Finder. However, in some of my folders the item bar is greyed out and I can't click the bar to sort. From the image below, the left image is the folder in question; the right is the normal view that I like to work in where I can click on the bar to sort items.
I'm not sure why this is happening, so could somebody shed some light on this please.
    Thanks.

I had the same question.   Credit goes to http://superuser.com/questions/339525/os-x-lion-new-finder-view-that-doesnt-allo w-sorting    for the answer.
If you have a window that is in this state,  first click the title bar to make sure it's the "active" window, then go to the "View" menu,  then click "Sort by..." : None.
Make sure "None" is active, then you can sort just like it's 1984-2010.

  • Can't select file names in list view

    System: Mac Pro 2.93 Quad-Core, 6GB RAM, 10.6.2
I updated from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 using software update AND from 10.6 to 10.6.2 doing a clean install. Both times I had problems with the finder: first, the icons in the sidebar turned into "page" icons (a white rectangle similar to the Documents icon, but one sheet instead of "two"), then I couldn't select the file names (to change the name of a file) in list view. Strangely I could do so in icon view or using Get Info. I trashed the com.apple.finder.plist file, and now every window has it's own set of values (different icon sizes and sorting prefs.) and I can't seem to make all windows default to a set of view/sort values (every time I open a window they change even after I selected "use values as defaults").
I'm stumped any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if the finder is "acting-up," does that mean that copying files, doing backups and the like, are all compromised? (This would be really upsetting).
    Thanks

Have a bootable backup/clone of your previous 10.6.1 installation or a TM backup?

  • Can't drag files in library grid view

I am unable to click and drag files from folder to folder within a library.

    > Cancel that, now it seems to work. Anyone know why it sometimes doesn"t?
A common problem that people still seem to have trouble with is that you must "grab" the thumbnail image itself, not the frame. Trying to drag an image by grabbing the frame does nothing.

  • Can't drag files from stacks to trash in 10.6.7

I have two stacks on my dock, downloads and documents. On my desktop (an Early 2009 model iMac), I have no problem opening a stack ("fan" view) and dragging a file from the stack to the trash. However, on my Early 2006 MacBook, I'm unable to do this. I was able to do it with 10.5.8, but I just upgraded it to 10.6, and then to 10.6.7 a few days ago, and now I can't.
I can still drag files to trash if I open the Documents or Downloads folder in Finder, just not directly from the stack, so it's just an inconvenience at worst, but if someone could help me fix this, I'd really appreciate it. I can provide more information if needed, but I'm not sure what would be useful.

I never even knew you could do that! Just tested it on my 10.6.7 machine, though, and it worked fine. I don't have a solution for you - I suppose you could try deleting the Dock preferences (com.apple.dock.plist) and reboot - but wanted to let you know it's not a problem in 10.6.7 so you can at least take a stab at tracking down and fixing the problem.

  • Can i drag files from one computer to another

can i drag files from one computer to another

You can, if you want to transfer files between macs I advies to use AirDrop(wi-fi needs to be enabled). Use shift+command+R, this will take you to your AirDrop in finder. Do this on both computers and you should see the user of the mac where you want to transfer files to.
If the seconds computer is a Windows, you can alway use a USB Drive, External Drive, through Dropbox(install dropbox on both computers and download the files that you need on the second computer) and if the file is small even mail.

  • Can't drag files into itunes from computer folder.

Im running windows 7 64bit, with the newest version of itunes:10.2.2.14.  I can't drag files from my "music folder" which is in my documents into itunes anymore.  I used to be able to do this with my old computer running windows 7 32bit, and even on windows vista, but it doesn't seem to work for me now. is there a setting that i can change? or mess around with something to fix this problem?

Ah. Just updated iPod again and movie dragged in fine.
Odd how it should work for one and not the other.
I guess that could a "bug fix" that the update referred to?

  • Can't drag files from Mini Bridge

    Hi
It's seems as an issue but I can't drag files from Mini Bridge to workspace thought my colleague can do that. Is it a problem with my configuration or internal bug of photoshop CS6?

It works now! Yes, I think "Big" Bridge wasn't start what time. Thank you!

  • I can't drag files with the mouse

Just installed Mountain Lion. After about four days I can't drag files with the mouse. Not across the desktop or from Finder window to Finder window.

I have the same problem, I have posted the below here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4152036?start=0&tstart=0
I have exactly the same problem on Mountain Lion- I go to drag files from the finder to another finder folder or the desktop and when I go to release the mouse button the file stays in a "hover" state, as if I hadn't released the mouse. It then follows my mouse cursor around forever. Very frustrating.
I have rebooted several times - any ideas?

  • Can't drag and drop from page view

Can't drag and drop from page view to desktop even though plus icon shows up for duplicating the page.  On Mac 10.9.2 Acrobat XI. I don't want to extract through the menu and associated dialogues.  Its slow and cumbersome.

    Hi Peterbruce,
Acrobat for Windows will let you select pages in the Pages panel and drag them to your desktop, but that isn't an option in Acrobat for Mac OS. You can drag thumbnails from the Pages panel in one doc, to the Pages panel in another, however.
    Best,
    Sara

  • I can't drag files to my iPhone 5 from iTunes. I get an alert that says files can't be copied because I have iTunes Match enabled but I do not have iTunes Match that I know of

I can't drag files from iTunes to my iphone 5, I get an alert that says files can't be copied because I have iTunes Match enabled but I do not have iTunes M

Correct.  When you purchase devices, they would have stated the OS they needed to work, on the box.  This can be overlooked, but it is very important to check when purchasing.
You current OS, is so old, that they technology build into the new devices, is not something your OS understands.  It didn't exist when your OS was created, and therefore you need to upgrade the OS to work with the newer technology of these devices.
10.6 software is not downloadable.  You must purchase a DVD disc.  You can order it from the on-line apple store

  • ITunes 11.0.1: Can't drag files into playlist unless it's in "List" view mode

If I drag and drop audio files from Finder into a playlist in iTunes 11 (which I do in order to make sure meta tags are correct), they only appear in the playlist if i'm using "List" mode. Using "grid" or "artist list", the files get added to my iTunes library, but they don't appear in the playlist I dragged them into.
What's up with this? Is it happening for other people?
(This is iTunes 11.0.1 on OS X 10.8.2.)

    berrrnard,
I get the same result as you. Best advice ..... always drag them to the List.
I don't really follow this though.......... (which I do in order to make sure meta tags are correct).
    What do you mean ??

  • Can't drag files out of the dock folders/stacks

On Mavericks I'm able to drag files out of the folders/stacks I have on the Dock (Downloads, Documents, etc.) just as you would anywhere on OSX. But, for some reason my mom (Mavericks) and my fiancee (Mountain Lion) can't. I've tried checkin the permissions for those folders (in Get Info) and they have read/write permissions. This only happens in list view, not in fan, grid or automatic. Is there some hidden setting or something else that would allow them to be able to drag files?

For downloads, go to your user folder downloads and remove them there. Same for Applications. To remove alias from the Dock hold down the command key while dragging them from the Dock.
If that does't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. Then try a Dock reset.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
