Can't get DSLR footage to export properly

When i try and export footage using either FCP or compressor it comes out either too small but in the right proportion, or way too widescreen. When i try to change the sequence dimenstions it makes the video in the slug go extremely small rather than larger. I'm at my wit's end trying to sort it out.

Hi guys-
I didn't convert it prior to editing, I just imported the footage using iPhoto then copied thos files into an FCP bin. When I look at the dimensions on a particular clip it tells me it's 1920 x 1080, but then in my overall sequence setting it says 720 x 576 :S I'm gonna try those tips you gave me soundman1024 and see if they work sorry for being vague, I haven't posted on a forum like this before and the whole thing with FCP is confusing me haha and in response to Rienk, I'm aiming to put it on the web (YouTube & Vimeo). I've tried making a Vimeo preset in Compressor, but neither that nor any other Compressor setting seems to work.

There are two problems here:
1) Aperture does not modify its "original" files on export. Meaning with the JPEG files that Aperture will NOT modify them, and it will not write IPTC data to them. It exports the XMP sidecar files, as you're seeing.
2) Adobe will NOT read IPTC sidecar files for non-RAW images. So if it sees a JPEG file, it will not look for an XMP sidecar file. It just doesn't read them, so the data won't be imported by Lightroom.
If you are using JPEG files, then probably the solution is to check the box in Aperture to tell it to write XMP metadata to the original files. They're not RAW files, so they're not proprietary in any way, so writing the XMP metadata to the JPEG files is probably pretty safe.

IPod as USB...can't get iPod to show up properly in My Computer

Old computer crashed and now I want to transfer my files to a new computer. I know how to do this but the iPod will not appear properly in the "my computer" section. It shows up as a generic USB drive. I have tried everything to get it to be recognized properly. Can someone PLEASE help me? When I click on the iPod it lists 4 empty folders titled Notes, Calendars, etc. When I click on them, they're empty. Please note, itunes DOES recognize the iPod, but I need to transfer the old songs before using itunes again. Just don't want to lose so many songs. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

WHAT! Oh, come on. This was the only reason I was interested in iOS4. I mean really I knew a lot of features wouldn't work cause of the lack of procesor speed, but the Walpaper is just a static graphic, what is so hard with that? I mean three OS's ago I hacked my iPhone and got that feature working. Apple did the pooch on this one. I hope this is not like holding back features like they do on cars to sell the over priced ones.

Can't get IR receiver to work properly

First to state out, I have read the wiki like 10 times and googled for a couple of hours without getting this to work.
If I start "sudo mode2" I get alot of output when enter the buttons. But I had to change "ir-table -p LIRC" before that worked.
I have added the following to /etc/rc.local
echo lirc > /sys/class/rc/rc0/protocols
I've done "sudo modprobe mceusb" and also tried "modprobe evdev"
I've added this to my /etc/conf.d/lirc:

Think I've found something more than can cause this problem, I want to run my Harmony as a "MCE Keyboard", not an "MCE Remote" (which I finally got to work).

I REALLY hate the page up/page down functions that automatically loaded with the program. I LIKE to use my page up/page down keys for web browsing. How can I get these keys to work properly, or any of the keys to work "normally" as I have in the past?

When using certain keys on my keyboard, they don't work like they are "intended" to be used. I HATE how Firefox has changed those functions without my request. How can I get my keyboard to function as it "should"?

I can't get InDesign CS3 to export a pdf properly

Hi all,
Actually I have resolved the problem but I thought I share with you all.
I have done up a booklet in CS2, containing 70 over TIFF images, all of them with clipping path done in Photoshop. In between this project, I upgraded to CS3 from CS2. After I amended and saved the .indd file to CS3 version, I encountered problem exporting the booklet to pdf. The pathed text and images were missing from the pdf.
1. I tried export the pages to JPG, everything looks fine.
2. Thinking probably the .indd file size is too big. I deleted some pages and export to pdf again. Same problem.
3. Then I read in the forum that some users encounter problem with TIFF images with clipping paths done up in Photoshop. BUT since I have 70 over images to re-save to psd as some suggested, I decide to put it aside first, hoping it's not clipping path that causes the problem.
4. Fed up and desperate. I started troubleshooting by deleting one element at a time and try export to pdf. Elements like path text, rounded corners boxes, color-filled boxes, etc.
5. FINALLY, I found out it was the dotted outline that causes the problem. I successfully exported the pdf after I remove the dotted outline! But client has approved the design and layout, so I can't simply remove the dotted outline! Luckily, I still able to export to pdf without error after I re-applied the dotted lines to the boxes.
If you encounter the same problem as me, probably you want to try re-apply all the dotted or any fancy line by setting it to 0pt, then to your desire thickness again. =)
Please share how you resolve your PDF error too!

Can't get h264 footage to import, only audio?

I'm brand new to Premiere. I have a simple project to edit and thought it would be perfect to get my hands dirty in CS6.
Unfortunately, I've already run into some problems.
• I can't import any h264 footage. I primarily shoot on a Canon 7d, and have a lot of 1920 x 1080 h264s. I was hoping to edit natively, as this is one of Premiere's selling points -- but when I import the footage, it shows it as an ".mov" file, yet no video plays, only audio. In fact, it won't even display a frame rate for the video -- rather than reading 23.976 like it should, it reads "48000 Hz". Why is it only reading the audio?
These files play normally in quicktime.
Any help?
Separate question, but regarding the same project.
This footage was shot in 24 fps, but just looked at final export requirements and I'll need it in 30 fps.
• Should I edit in 24 fps, and then try to somehow convert to 30? How?
• Should I edit in a 24 fps or a 30 fps sequence?
• What options do I have with 3:2 pulldown vs compression?
• Any recommendations of what point in the process i need to do a conversion or compression.
Again, I'm working in Cs6 on a Mac.
Let me know any other questions regarding specs.

Hi katevers34 - welcome to the forum!
I have found that giving those portrait pics a very minor edit in Photoshop has fixed the problem - any adjustment at all, perhaps a slight colour shift. Now you may not have Photoshop, but doing the same thing in iPhoto would most likely suffice as well. I'm sure that in iPhoto you could select all of those pics (Command-Click on each one) and in the Edit > Adjust window, make a minor change to them all in one action e.g. a tiny sharpness adjustment.
Post back if it doesn't work for you.

Can't get postscript files to print properly

I am using Windows XP Pro, Indesign CS2. I upgraded to Acrbat Professional 9. When I upgraded I lost the Distiller printer in my print setting. When I go to print a postscript file, under the ppd tab normally Distiller is listed there. It's not there. Because of this, my files are not printing properly. How do I get Distiller to show up in the ppd box in Indesign?

I've been exporting to PDF for newspaper ads for years and never heard of a problem, but if your company uses older equipment I can understand why they might want to distill in order to be sure that there is no transparency.
That aside, It does look as if the behavior has changed in CS4. I no longer see any PPD choices for PS FIle, either, and I do in earlier versions. I have no idea if this is by design, or if it's a bug, but you can report it at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form
In the meantime, if you set your desired joboptions as the default in Distiller, instead of choosing Postscript File from the list of printers you should be able to pick Adobe PDF and make the postscript and invoke the distiller all in one step.

I can't get video to loop exporting an OAM file and importing into Muse. Seems to ignore all triggers.

I've tried everything I can think of, but triggers are ignored. I've tested in Safari and Firefox so far. Tested in Muse Preview. Tested in An. Nothing is paying attention to the trigger I have set up.
I've used a label to get it to loop back to the beginning. I've used zero to get it to loop back. I've searched the web, YouTube, and here looking for answer none will fix this. No errors in the error box BTW. Been back to Lynda.com re-re-viewing videos. All seems fine, but it isn't.
Website is here: http://www.moviesandfx.com. The animation on the home page is what I want to loop. It plays okay in Safari, has mixed results in Firefox. Not sure yet about IE, I'm on a Mac.
I'd love to hear ideas to fix this. The workflow is An—>OAM export—>Muse "place"—>Muse publish to ftp.

I'm having the same problem. I inserted the oam in Dreamweaver, where it loops forever in split and live view. As soon as I view it in a browser (Safari and Chrome), the looping is disabled. There are no console errors.

I have renewed my interest for Java but need to start at the very beginning again. I have actuallu read up on AWT. Yes yes, I will follow up with Swing but for now I am just testing the waters again.
However, I cant manage even the simplest of tasks. I want to display a TabPanel and do see something in the created Frame but something is not correct (it certainly is not a TabPanel). Would you have a clue as to what I am doing wrong? The TabPanel is an OpenSource example and I actually do not expect anything wrong with it. It does work with getMinimumSize so I might skip a beat there. Any comment is appreciated.

.....follow a link to 'other code'. It is generally considered that if code is short enough to constitute 'an SSCCE' *(<- link),* then it is something short enough for them to look at. Any longer, and you've lost them.
An SSCCE is not only a short form of code, but very specific. I recommend you read up on the SSCCE, and post code in that specific form.
If you want some beginner projects to get you going again in Java, I recommend you put GUIs aside for a while do stuff intended to run from the command line. Use the Scanner class if you need interaction. When you get back to GUIs, launch directly into Swing, because that is the toolkit about which best help is to be had (and also includes a JTabbedPane supported by Sun!).

How can I get surround sound to export through the correct speakers?

I am experienced with Soundtrack Pro and can successfully export 5.1 surround.
I'm moving over to Logic Pro to try out 7.1 surround, but I can't even export 5.1 surround successfully since dialogue for example comes out of all speakers, yet I've panned it to the front centre speaker. Please note I do not have surround speakers set up with my computer as whenever I do connect to my amplifier it just does everything through all speakers (whether using Soundtrack Pro or Logic Pro). I am using the visual surround panner as my guide. Either way the surround export in Logic Pro is not what I'm doing within the pogram.
I believe I've got everything set up properly:
In Preferences-Audio-Devices-Core Audio I have device Sunflower (16ch)
In Preferences-Audio-Output- I have 5.1 (ITU 775) or 7.1 (3/4.1)
All tracks are set with the surround panner and I can use just like in Soundtrack Pro.
I can bounce the individual stems properly.
It's just not in proper surround sound.
Where am I going wrong?

What is the function of Sunflower in your work flow? Usually its used to route audio between programs. In the case of Logic, you simply need to route to the outputs for things to work right.
I guess we should start with your interface - do you have 6 actual separate outputs that you can use to monitor your surround sound?
(NOTE: I no longer do surround, but used to). In my case, I used a RME Fireface 800 which had a bunch of analog outs. I used outputs 1&2 as L&R, 3&4 as Center/Sub, and 5&6 as Rs/Ls. Each of these outputs was connected to a monitor so that I could mix in surround.
When you say you are bouncing 5.1 successfully, do you mean it is creating 6 separate files?
BTW - what mechanism are you using to playback your surround files? I used to use a PC program to burn DVDA's, which I then played back on a DVDA-capable disk player.
If you are looking to encode the files so that they will playback on a traditional surround sound system, you would need to put them through a Dolby Digital encoder. If you have had Logic for a few years, you MAY have Compressor which can do this. Otherwise, Dolby Digital encoder software can be somewhat expensive.
