Can't open Freehand Mx in Leopard 10.5.8
I've been using Freehand Mx for years and have lots of recent files. Around 6 months ago updated my system (Intel iMac) to Leopard 10.5.8. Freehand was working fine until yesterday!
Now when I try to open it the application seems to open but there is no start image on screen. I can see it in the dock but the only way I can get out of it is to force quit as nothing appears on screen when it is supposedly loaded!
I've tried all the hotfix ideas and relaoded the system and the application, still nothing!
I recently installed Mackeeper and am beginning to wonder if that's the problem.
Anyone got any ideas?

Thanx for your reply. Not what I wanted to hear but at least it gives
me a direction to go in to get this fixed.
Do you think buying an upgrade to Snow Leopard and installing that
would solve the problem along with the adobe fix?
Andy
A Snow Leopard upgrade might work if it replaces those files that MacKeeper erased but my concern is if those files were related to FreeHand's installation. But even if you reinstalled the old Leopard, you will be going through the same process and if I understand what you did orignally, that didn't work. Best bet would be to back up your drive, erase, and reinstall your preferred flavor of OS X. Then install FreeHand and register it fresh. Remember to use the hotfix if you decided on Snow Leopard. Sorry I can't help much more than that, Andy. — Mark

Can you open freehand files in CS6?
can you open freehand files in CS6? I have been using both illustrator & freehand for 15 years & have thousands of work files being freehand.
It seems very disappointing to have to keep an old version of illustrator just to open these files. I also find it interesting that many of the key tools that freehand had over illustrator are not translated into the newer versions of illustrator. Something simple like you still can't have a unique picture bullet • before text in illustrator. In freehand you could cut & paste any graphic into the text you were designing.saturn234 wrote:

No. The conversion plugin didn't make it into CS6 so the last import function was CS5.5

At this point, it is the only way to make your files convert into Illustrator although I've had some luck with exporting to EPS or (if your FH graphics are simple enough) save as AI format. Keep your eyes on this project however : http://www.stagestack.com/

As a fellow FreeHand user, I couldn't agree more. Other users of both programs have said this endlessly over the years here. A litany of features are still m.i.a. since FHMX was acquired years ago... including inline graphics. It's almost comical. -
Why i can't open freehand files in Windows which are created in Mac??
As i use Mac to operate freehand in my company. But when i open those files at home by using Windows freehand, i can't open them? Why?? Please help..thanks!
Most obvious - make sure the Mac file have the correct ".FH10" file extension.
I use FHMX on Windows7 and regularly open Mac files from FH8 without any dramas.
Try back-saving the Mac files to FH8 (with .FH8 file extension) and opening those on the PC.
Failing that, convert individual layers to PDF open those on the PC and re-assemble the drawing.
Good Luck -
Can't open Aperture after Snow Leopard to Mavericks upgrade.
Upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Now, the Aperture icon in the dock is greyed out. When I try to open it I get the message that I have Aperture 3.2.4 and it can't be opened with Mavericks. I purchased Aperture from the App Store when I had Snow Leopard and it shows in my purchases list, but when I check for available updates nothing shows. I have US English in my preferences, and Aperture is in my Applications file. I tried to update Aperture with 3.4.4 as an interim step from the Apple website, but got the message that I had to update from the App Store.
Any help appreciated.
RussCould there be anything interfering with the App Store connecting to Apple's servers? Firewall, antivirus filters? Any problems with your AppleID? Credit card expired, the answers to your security questions too short, an too simple password?
In some cases it will help, to boot into Safe Mode before connecting to the AppStore. Try to load the updates page while booted into Safe mode, see: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode -
How can I open Appleworks files in Leopard?
I installed Leopard as an upgrade on my MacBook without problems. Everything seemed to open and print on my Epson Stylus CX7800 without problems; I was able to scan and print from a scanned file without difficulty; there was even an enhanced print dialog which was great. HOWEVER, when I opened files created with Appleworks 6.2.9, or created and successfully saved a new document and I attempted to print it AppleWorks and the print dialogue either locked up or crashed. I tried massaging everything I knew of but still was unable to print any AppleWorks document. I get the print screen and click print but nothing, nada happens. I cannot print to PDF on the left hand dropdown either.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail. I cannot open the Appleworks files with either Pages or Keynote (did not even recognize the word processing files). When I attempt to, they crash after appearing to open a word processing file but all I got was gibberish! I attempted to open the files with Adobe 8 but it would recognize them and seemed to open them but then I got a "cannot open" message.
I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true? I did find a way to solve my immediate problem but it is not one I like at all. I finally wiped one segment of my external 250GB drive and installed Tiger on it, then copied all my files to that segment. I can load and print Appleworks normally as before. I guess that is one kind of "fix" if a bit unwieldy since I prefer to use my MacBook from my reclining chair because of severe arthritis. ( I will again be out of the loop for awhile as my right knee is being replaced tomorrow.)
I am so curious as to why some seem to be able to use their AppleWorks. I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch? Do you think that would help? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me as there are other problems with Leopard but less onerous than this one. Anyone out there to help the thousands of us who have used AppleWorks extensively as educators?
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB 67 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and Leopard 10.5.1I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.

Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac. -
I can't open my MacPro (snow leopard) with my reset password.
I reset my password with Disk and touch C for open, and the computer don't accept the new password.
What can i do?Clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk with a clean cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol.
Stick it in and reboot the machine holding the c (or option) key down and boot from the disk.
Second screen in under the Utilites menu is Reset Password.
If you did this and it doesn't work, you can try this method from Single User mode.
At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down ⌘ and S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
The next step is optional, but it’s a good idea because it checks the consistency of the hard disk before moving on. At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type
fsck -fy
and press Return. Wait for the checks to complete before going to the next step. This is a simple check for file system integrity and is optional. It may take a few minutes to complete. Be patient. If you get concerned that it has stalled press the Return key. When the integrity check completes pressing the Return key will result in the localhost prompt again.
Type
mount -uw /
and press Return. There is a single space before and after -uw
All on the same line, type
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
and press Return. There is a single space before and after the word load.
Type
ls /Users
and press Return. There is a single space following ls.
This lists all of the usernames on the computer, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what the user names are.
All on the same line, type
dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
but replace “username” with one of the users displayed in the previous step. Replace "password" with a new password of your choice. There is a single space before and after the . (dot) character that follows dscl and a single space following -passwd. Press Return.
Type reboot and press Return.
If your not able to c boot, but can option key boot, the you likely have a Firmware Password enabled, not knowing this your basically screwed. -

When i switch to GarageBand or iMovie or iDVD or iWEb , it says the samething.
Please any advice will be really really reaallllllllllly helpful. The one thing i would hear is that i will have to reinstall the operating system , cause i loose the DVD install of Tiger. As this sounds more like an OS10.5 software issue than a hardware problem at this point, you might want to post in the forum dedicated to that system software here:

Opening FreeHand MX file in InDesign CS2
I was sent a FrreHand MX file that i need to edit in InDesign

InDesign can't open FreeHand files, regrdless of the
extension. For edit=
ing or even opening fh11 file you'll need FreeHand.
Illustrator, however=
, can open older FH files so you have to export as fh9 (or
older) first.=
You can extract some elements, export as eps or pdf, etc.
and import in=
to FreeHand but it is almost like recreating the design from
sctratch.
You can of course use 30 day demo of FreeHand for editing.

The licens=

with a lot=
of body text, there is no better tool than InDsign CS2.

Opening Freehand files in Illustrator
Can I open Freehand MX files in Illustrator CS3?
Thanks,
JozeYes. But depending upon how the FH files are built, some unexpected problems may result on some objects in the translation.

How do you open FreeHand MX files in Leopard?
Adobe said that installing and using FreeHand MX in Leopard is not recommended. Since Illustrator CS3 only has partially success in opening FreeHand files how are you supposed to open them? Is anybody using FreeHand MX on Leopard. I concerned about installing it since other apps of the age I've heard don't run at all (PhotoShop 7).

Everytime I turn on my MacBook Pro the Airport is turned off and I have to turn it on again and then again. At first I thought my internet access was slow but nope my Airport turned off in the middle of a search. Also this morning my Sherlock became a question mark and is gone. Leopard seems unsable and I can't wait for the bug fix. I wish I had waited longer to purchase and load.

Sherlock is gone from Leopard. All you saw were traces of his leaving when you upgraded.
As far as Airport goes, check the Network Preferences and under Advanced be sure you have the correct boxes checked or unchecked as needed. Then see what happens.
What seems unstable about Leopard? Mine seems stable as a rock on my old MBP. -
Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path
Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path using any of these perfectly normal methods:
1. double-click file in the Finder (e.g in a Folder on your Mac or on your Mac desktop etc.)
2. select file and choose "File... Open" command-o in the Finder
3. drag file to the application icon in the Finder.
4. Select file in Bridge and double-click, choose File.. Open.. or Drag icon to InDesign icon in dock.
If you try to open an ID file named with a "#", you will get an error message "Missing required parameter 'from' for event 'open.'"
This happens to any InDesign file that has a "#" (pound sign, number sign, or hash) in the filename or in the file path (any parent folder).
To reproduce
Name an InDesign file Test#.idd Try to open it in the Finder or Bridge (as opposed to the "Open" dilaog of InDeisng itself).
"Solution"
The file WILL open using File... Open... command-o while in InDesign application.
Rename the file or folders that have a "#" (shift-3) in the filename.
Report to Adobe if it bugs you.
This does not occur in "plain" Leopard 10.5 nor Tiger 10.4
Untested in Panther or before and
Untested with CS3 and earlier in Snow Leaopard.
Anyone have those and want to try this... ?In case this really bothers you: we've added a workaround for this into Soxy. If you enable the option, these documents will open fine on double-click.
You need Soxy 1.0.7 from:
http://www.rorohiko.com/soxy
Go to the 'Soxy' - 'Preferences' - 'Other' dialog window, and enable 'Open InDesign via Script'
(Irrelevant background info (it's all invisible to the user): the workaround works by special-casing how Soxy opens documents in InDesign: instead of using AppleScript, Soxy will use ExtendScript to instruct InDesign to open the document - which works fine). -

Has Spotlight finished its indexing? Check in the upper right. If you get just the search field, it has, if it says its indexing, you have to wait before you can use anything.

I made a bootable disc on an external hard drive, with Yosemite on it. I am running Snow Leopard on my iMac. How can I open the Yosemite disc from the desktop on my iMac? Does the external hard drive need to be connected to my iMac by firewire to do that?
kahjot wrote:
Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?
