Can't print in Quark 6.5; missing ppd for my printer

I just purchased the new 20" iMac w/the Intel Core Duo processor, and with it, bought a new printer, scanner, and updated all of my software. This computer replaced my trusty G4 Cube. I am now running strictly OS X (Classic isn't supported on the Intel Macs) and I love it! However, I cannot print from Quark 6.5 to my HP DeskJet 6540.
I called Quark and the tech support guy got me set up so that I can now create pdfs from Quark (It still doesn't work perfectly, but maybe it'll fix itself when Quark 7 is released. Quark 7, I'm told, should run natively on the Intel Mac.) I mentioned that I couldn't print from Quark. I haven't been able to test my computer out too much, since I just got it, but I have printed from Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 and off the internet (through Safari) with no problems. The tech support guy from Quark told me to check in a particular folder that lists all the PPDs (Macintosh HD--Library--Printers--PPDs--Contents--Resources--en.lproj) and there were lots of printers listed, but no HP DeskJets. He said that I need to get the PPD for my printer and place it in that folder.
Well, the next step was to call HP. I had researched their site beforehand, and know that there are no driver updates/downloads on their site for the Intel Mac--all of that came preinstalled with OS X.4. The tech support guy from HP had me try to add a new printer (something about a Gimp printer, I believe a 550 series??) and that didn't work. (Coincidentally, the DeskJet 550 PPD is not listed in my PPD folder either---no DeskJets are listed!!) I asked if HP had created a PPD file for my printer, and they said that they hadn't created anything that is compatible with the Intel Macs. He said that Apple called HP up, asked for their info, and that Apple created what they needed as far as printer drivers go.
So....I called Apple tech support. I explained all that I just mentioned above, and she put me on hold for a few minutes while she spoke with I guess a more experienced technician. Eventually she told me she didn't know how to help me and that I should try posting my situation here.
Is there anything I can do short of buying a new printer--one that's listed in the PPD folder? Thanks in advance!
20" iMac w/Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2GB RAM, 500 GB HD, the works!

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked around, but didn't see that option anywhere in the printer dialog box and corresponding menus, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. It doesn't even give me the list of PPDs in the Quark printing menu (they're all checked as being on in the PPD manager). That box is grayed out--I can't even click on it to scroll through the list, if there even is one.
Since posting this problem, I've spoken with Apple and HP again. The Apple tech said that they don't deal with PPDs at all. HP said they never created a PPD for this printer. The only 2 PPD drivers he could find were for laser printers. I don't need a large laser printer, nor can I afford one. Maybe I'll just have to get rid of this printer (which is brand new) and find a comparable one that's not an HP and will work with all of my software.
HP also suggested holding on until August when OS 10.5 is supposed to be released. Apparently I'm not the only one with printing problems. HP said that 10.5 should hopefully fix many of the printing problems people have been having.

  • When i ask my macbook air to print it tells me it is looking for my printer it takes several minutes before it finds it and then prints, why is that as my wife is connected to the same printer in the same way (bluetooth) and hers prints straight away

As per my question, when i ask it to print it tells me it is looking for my printer this takes several minutes before it prints.  my wife is in the same room using an imac also using a bluetooth connection to the same printer and hers prints immediately.  why is this.

Perhaps you could try this to resolve your issue:
*How to Reset the Printing System*
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse (or right click if supported).
    4. Click "Reset printing system ..."
    5. Restart your Mac
This will remove your print queues but not your printer drivers. So you will only need to add your print queues again.

  • Hello - Can anyone give me help/pointers on prepping art for screen printing?

I have expereince in Illustrator, but mostly for print. Is there special ways of preparing art work for screen printing? This would be art/logos for hats, tee shirts ansd promotional materials for a screen prininting company - mostly apparel?
Thanks, any info is appreciated - I've got to learn the right way to do this in two weeks time -
    Rosie

Best advice I can give you with so broad a questions is: Forget about color; think in terms of inks. Also think in terms of opaque, not translucent, inks. Inks for the kinds of garments you mention are almost always opaque; so you have to forget about on-screen appearances which assume the translucent inks of offset printing.
The way you properly prepare files for screen printing is highly dependent upon the capabilities of the particular screen printing house. Screen printing runs the gamut from crude hand-done process in a local T-Shirt shop to highly automated high-resolution imprints on instrument face plates; and everything in between.
In the most common setups, you should think in terms of line art, not halftone or tint dots. That rules out soft & fuzzy shading, fuzzy drop shadows, and other raster effects.
Some garment screen shops are able to handle toning dots; other's aren't. Some shops can do 4-color process; some can't. Six-color screen printing machines are fairly commonplace these days, even in local shops. The better garment imprinters have equipment capable of CMYK process, but instead build gloriously brilliant images using six or more opaque inks on any color substrate.
So without more specifics about the shop capabilities and the specific artwork, it's not a simple matter to give you a ready-in-two-weeks crash course in preparing artwork for screen printing to cover everything you many encounter.

  • How do i sign up and what email address do i use for my printer do i make a new address for my print

HP photosmart premium all in one printer How do i set up for email to my printer do i need to make a new email just for the printer or use my email address

    Hi jsavat,
You can change your printer's email address from the main page of the ePrint Center site with these steps:
    1.  Log into the ePrint Center page if you haven't already done so.
    2.  Click your Printer's tab, and then click "Change" next to your product's e-mail address.
    3. Type an e-mail address in the dialog box. The e-mail address can be 6 to 30 characters, and can be a combination of letters, numbers, an underscore, and up to two dots.
    4. Click "Check". The ePrintCenter system checks if the e-mail address is available.
    5.  If the address is available, click "Save".
Let me know if this helps.

  • My Epson XP - 400 will not print wirelessly or via USB. The documents just sits in the print queue while the computer is "searching for the printer".  I set up the printer on the computer and it is connected to the wireless network.

I'm unable to print wirelessly or connected via USB with my Epson XP-400. The computer continues to say it's searching for the printer even though the printer is set up on the computer, the printer is connected to the wireless network and the USB is plugged into the computer.

  • Can I save Projects in their entirety (with photos) for future printing?

Hi - I have 15 iPhoto books that I would like to have printed. I have built these books with photos selected from a group of roughly 12,000 in my iPhoto library. I would like to have the books printed and then archive my photos to DVDs and delete them from my computer in order to be able to load on new photos. Is there any way to export my "Projects" to a DVD such that if, for some reason, one of the books that I had printed got damaged, I could easily reinsert the DVD and upload the project for printing again (with all of the photo and photo edits/cropping fully intact)? Given what I have been able to glean so far, it seems as though there is no mechanism for backing up projects for development say 5 years hence without keeping all of one's photos on a drive together. For me, this is not feasible... Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks for any help you are able to offer!

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • How to install the "Generic Printer" PPD for the Print Booklet setting?

    Hi,
This is rather urgent. At my university the iMacs used to have the "Generic Printer" option while building a booklet under the "Print Booklet" > "Print settings" > Setup > PPD: Generic Printer, for a Post Script File so we could select any paper size to generate the .ps file. But they've changed the computers and now no one has itm and academic resources will take one month to install the option while I need to generate a booklet for next week. I've noticed some computers (one or two) have the PPD Generic Printer installed and they've explained to us that is a downloadable driver, but we don't really understand how it works. Can someone please tell me where and how I can install this driver so my InDesign will have the PPD: Generic Printer as an option?
    Thank you!

thanks for the reply. I followed ur steps to check the printer queue. I could only copy the URI link (which is:
usb://Canon/LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150?serial=0000A29AIAWT), however,  i couldn't paste to the same place (if im not getting wrong?).
Please see the screenshot as below. Is everything correct there? I still couldn't print anything.

  • Need advice on Pages for commercially printed publications.

Here is my situation. I have created a publication (a buy/sell classified magazine) using Pages.
Pages was recommended to me as opposed to Indesign or Quark as it has some great placeholder options for text and photos and would set up nicely as an easy template. So I spent 100s of hours setting up this document and getting it perfect and then off to the printer we go!
Firstly I should mention we are using cold set printing for those who are familiar with it... anyhoo... publication came back with VERY dark photos and even the text was not crisp.
Has anyone had cold set printing done from a publication or document done in Pages? Is the problem with the conversion to PDF? Any suggestions to fix the problem? Is lightening the pictures significantly going to work?
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Have you asked your printer about how they handle PDFs? Or, for that matter, what they thought went wrong with the file you sent them? As far as I know, there is nothing special about the PDF output of Pages, and any printer that can utilize PDFs properly should be able to use Pages output (at least as far as the text is concerned -- images may very well take some tweaking). This sounds like a matter you should address directly with your printer -- if they are any good, they should be willing to discuss this with you.
For the most part the commercial printing we've done from Pages was for digitally printed jobs, since we generally don't do large runs (1000+), but I have never had any problem with our printer services handling the PDF or producing less than acceptable results.

  • Printing multiple screen objects (ALV+GFW) with only 1 print dialog pop-up?

    All,
This is related to my previous post at:
Re: How to print multiple ALV Grids with only one print dialog?
but there is still one open question...
My requirement is to create reports that will be called through portals; those reports are a combination of charts and the associated list output describing the data of each chart.
In my first report (4 charts), I created a screen with 8 custom containers: 4 on the left hand side for the charts and 4 to the right for the list output.
To create the charts I am using the Graphical Framework (GFW) and for the ALVs the new CL_SALV* classes.
Everything works fine on the screen, but the users also want to print the report. I got them to the point where they will accept a separate printout (page) for every object (e.g. chart and ALV) of the report.
I put a print button through the GUI status on the screen and trigger the associated print events in the program; this works fine as well, but the problem is that for every output (in this case 8) a print dialog appears and prompts the user for a printer selection. This the users won't accept and - quite frankly - I wouldn't either ;).
Now, in my previous post someone pointed me to the use of the REUSE* function modules to append the ALVs and then print them together; this works and reduces the print dialog to only one for the ALVs.
Even though this is an option, I am still kind of hesitant: why using all the great new OO stuff via the CL_SALV* classes to bring the ALVs on the screen, just to go back to the old approach for the printouts???
Especially since I still can’t figure out how to combine the GFW objects in one print – or even better – how to suppress the dialog by passing the information behind the scenes either.
As of now, I have 2 options:
    - 8 print dialogs (OO only)
    - 5 print dialogs (using the REUSE approach for the ALVs and triggering the chart prints individually)
Does anyone see a way to bring it down to ONE?
    Thanks,
    Guenther

Update: I found the solution for the ALVs!
Even though I am using the
"new-page print on parameters G_S_PRINT_PARAMETERS no dialog" statement, the dialogs still appeared; reason for this was that I also set:
    "L_O_PRINT->SET_PRINT_ONLY( IF_SALV_C_BOOL_SAP=>TRUE )" before I output the ALV table.
After removing this, the ALVs are printing without pop-up!!!
Unfortunately the GFWs still prompt for the printer selection

    Hi,
Mine is also same requirement and i could not even generate multiple print dialogs. Can i have your code to compare with my code please.
I am displaying container information on 200 screen PBO. I have added one custom print button to the grid tool bar(remaing container toolbar print buttons i have disabled). Once i click on custom print button a popup is coming and when i click on continue(one container informtion print is coming) and  it is coming to 100 screen(in this, i am calling selection screen as a subscree) and subsequent print dialog is not coming.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Seeking a driver for my printer to run through my Airport Extreme router

Im trying to find a driver for my Lexmark X1100 series printer which would allow me to run the printer through the usb port of my Airport Extreme router. The printer works when plugged directly into the usb port of the computer. I have a Windows 7 Asus computer. Can anyone help me please. I am using the Bonjour printer wizard to set up the router for the printer. Thanks

There is no driver that will allow that, as this printer only works by connecting it to a host computer, not to a network. No printer driver or software is ever installed to the AirPort Extreme for any printer. Printer drivers and print/scan/fax software (if any) must be installed separately to each computer that will be using a printer.

  • Using Airport Express for a printer

I have placed my laser printer on our main floor since that is where I am most and I was unable to connect wirelessly using my desktop PC (not Mac) through the network in our basement. I was told I could do it by getting the Airport Express. However, it appears that I need to have the ethernet of the network plugged into the Airport Express to print to it. I do not have internet on the main floor. I was hoping to basically use the Airport Express directly to the printer.
ie. Mac Laptop anywhere in house. Airport Express plugged into power supply with usb from printer to Airport Express. Print from my Mac Laptop or my PC laptop or even my PC desktop in the basement.
Is there a way to extend the network, maybe?
    Does this not work???

Okay.... so, I got my MacBook to connect to the printer no problem once I figured out one thing.
But, I have installed Airport Utility on my Dell PC. I installed Bonjour, but, through all the "Help" items, it isn't real clear how I am supposed to add the printer. I say "search for printer", but it doesn't show. The help just indicates install Bonjour and follow the instructions on how to connect to the computer, but after Bonjour was installed, all it said as far as I knew was it was installed. I tried accessing the install again to go through the process but was unable to ... I think the install file was deleted and now, when I try to reinstall the whole airport utility, it is denied since I have a newer version of airport utility installed (I updated).
Please help.... I even checked to see if Port 5353 was open, and Bonjour already did it for me.
Airport Utility sees the airport from my PC, and it lists the printer I had "installed" while on my Mac, but, I can't seem to "find" it when I browse for the printer under the add printers.

Issue : Command to move print content left/right in Smartform label for zebra printer.
Requirement : If you changed the printer setting top position and left position, Print should start from a specific (X,Y) position.
I am facing an issue while printing a smartfroms in different zebra printer.  We had tried all
    S_LZPL_SETUP_X  (Where X is LH/SPD/MD/PM/FT )
But these command are not working in smartforms.
We had used ZPL II printer command like u2018LH X,Yu2019  and u2018FT,X,Yu2019  in main window as well as in subsequent windows. But that also not working.
    Please advice.
    dinesh.

    Hi,
If you follow notes #750002 and #750772 and use a smartforms and device type LZEB2, then the you cn just adjust the position of the text in the smartform. e.g. Use tab-stops, spaces or adjust the position of the window. There is no need to use ZPL2 commands directly.
