Can't read disk

For some reason, my OSX has stopped reading the CD/DVDs I insert. Although, they are clearly visible in "Disk Utility," they will not come up on the desktop and I can't do anything with them.

Check what the Finder is set to show on the desktop in the General section of its preferences, which are accessible from the Finder menu.

  • Can't read disk label

    Dear Sun experts,
I am trying to install Solaris 9 on a Sun Ultra 10 Sparc workstation. This system formerly had Solaris 8 on it, but we decided to do a reinstallation to configure things the way we wanted them. Before doing that we encountered a few problems
1.The system failed to recognize the Dell Ultra Sharp Monitor, when the signal cable was plugged into the port behind the computer. To solve this we researched and were told to remove the Video card attached to the mother board, and this we did.The system now recognized the dell monitor and booted in Solaris 8.
2.We ran sys-unconfig to reconfigure the system to change the hostname on a reboot. We powered off the computer.Afterward we would go through the sys-unconfig program in an indefinite loop.So I powered off the computer each time i got stuck.
3.Lastly I tried to do a STOP A to try to go to the 'ok' prompt in order to do a clean installation of Solaris 8 Installation CD, by running
    ok boot cdrom [ENTER]
    Here's what I am getting:
Boot device: /pci@1f, 0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args:
    Can't read disk label.
    Can't open disk label package
    Can't open boot device
    ok
    [end]
I want to do a clean installation of the Solaris 9 CD on the sparc ultra 10 computer. Please can anyone help me out? I looked at the solaris 9 installation guide, and it asked that I follow this procedure. Please respond if you can help.
Also of note is that I got this system from a user who had installed Solaris 8 sparc on it earlier.
    Thanks a million!

    Hi!
After a day fighting with same problem and found no good solution on the internet , I was able to do a workaround in order to be able to boot my sun bade 1500 that was giving the "can't open disk label" message.
I found no source of the problem but someone with more knowledge could guess. (maybe a default bad alias definition of cdrom ?)
Well, first of all I plugued a normal IDE CDrom as primary slave, leaving IDE HD as primary master. And inserted solaris 8 installation CD (as it was my only solaris bootable CD, but I guess that I oculd boot any other CD).
After that, I went to the openboot prompt (ok>) and did next:
ok devalias cdrom - this will show you current path to internal CD. Use this to determine what new alias should look like.
    ok setenv auto-boot? false
    ok reset-all
ok probe-scsi-all - find the path to the new cdrom - write it down & write target # as well
ok show-disks - find the exact path you just wrote down and type that letter
ok nvalias cdrom2 [Ctrl] + [y] which will paste that path. Finish with @sd1,0:f AS IT's PRIMARY SLAVE
    ok reset-all
    ok boot cdrom2
    I found this part in http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Solaris/Q_ 20757891.html
except teh @sd1,0:f, I found that with my good luck!
After that I was able to boot with CD. the installation failed, but at least I was able to mount / filesystem and modify my /etc/passwd ... my target!
    HTH
    Cheers!

  • Can' t read disk label, install issues

can' t read disk label, install issues
i am trying to install solaris 8 on a sparc5 (256mb, 4.2gb,110mhz). i initially installed using the installation disk and it seemed successful as i was able to load the rest of the cds. something went wrong though b/c the system is stuck in a rebooting loop after it finished the last cd. so i went searching and found that i could only have a root partition of no bigger than 1gb. since i used the installation disk, i was not given an option to specify slice sizes. so now, i am trying to redo the install starting from the first disk (1 of 2) and skipping the installation disk. when i do a "boot cdrom" with the 1 of 2 disk, i get the cant read disk label or something about short entry and it will not boot. i am using actual Solaris 8 cds and not downloads. what can i do to get it to boot up from the first disk, or fix the partitioning on the disk?

I am using the offical Solaris 8 Installation 2/02 for SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems February 2002, Revision A
Output from the probe-ide command follows:
    device 0 (Primary Master)
    ATA Model: ST3160023A
    device 1 (Primary Slave)
    Removable ATAPI Model: LTN4865
    device 2 (Secondary Master)
    ATA Model: ST340016A
    device 3 (Secondary Slave)
    not present
device 0 is the new hard disk that I just installed
device 1 is the CDR drive
device 2 is the original hard disk. I can boot this but now get some magic disk errors or something like that
    device 3 is not present
I have all devices set to cable select according to the manual.
    Thanks for your help...

  • Can't read disk label: Booting Blade from CDROM

    Folks !
I am trying to boot Sun Blade 100 from its internal IDE CD-ROM drive
using the Solaris 8 boot/installation CD (01/01). When I give the command
"boot cdrom" from ok fromt in OpenBoot, disk seems to spin for a moment
(green light comes on) but it eventually fails complaining:
    can't read disk label
    can'open disk label package
    failed to open boot device.
I have tried following (all to no avail)
"boot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@1,0:f" since devalias shows that cdrom is aliased to above. I also tried cdrom@0,0:f, but same result.
tried boot/installation CD from Solaris 9
    did set-defaults reset-all
checked probe-ide and show disks output to make sure CDROM is recognized - it is primary slave.
swapped another IDE CD-ROM drived pulled from a PC. It was recognized but still not bootable.
Makes me wonder if PROM/NVRAM is corrupted. Hard disk
drive is trashed as such (another Blade 100 problem, since it was crashing
often, I had to force powerdown using the switch eventually leading
to corruption of basic files like /usr/lib/libnsl.so.1, so I can't force fsck)
I have to boot from CD to recover the machine and hopefully
repair the disk drive or swap it out and upgrade to Solaris 9.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks very much.

as per the message it appears either you have a bad CD drive or CD media . If you have another machine try to boot this CD and verify it is working there. If the CD is ok you will have to swap the cd drive for testing

  • Out of the blue! clicking HD, "can't read disk"

    I've got a 4th gen. click wheel.
    I didn't drop it, I didn't sit on it, I didn't give it a bath...
I just plugged it in this morning, and out of the freakin blue:
the first sign was that it wasn't showing up in itunes.
The second was that when I tried to quit itunes, the whole computer froze.
The third was when I finally unplugged the iPod, the harddrive was clicking HARD.
It had reset by itself and was on the Apple logo, which soon became that dreaded crosseyed ipod with "apple.com/support" on it. Good. God. So I reset it again and again and at one point it seemed to be back to normal.
But then I had to leave, and when I came back, the problem had started again. It was resetting itself over and over, I reset it and brought it into disk mode, and now it won't come out or disk mode!
And now, when I plug it into the computer, I get a friendly little "cannot read disk" message.
    ... Any suggestions?

I'm having a similar problem with one of our media drives.
my backup just died. really, really can't afford do lose this data...and have 500GB.
any suggestions? other than reformatting? here's the error that i've gotten:
    Verifying volume “Media Server”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
The volume Media Server needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
         Volume needs repair
tried disk repair, and tried tech tool pro 4. no success.
I just need to copy the data off...and then i can throw the darn drive in the trash. Help ASAP! please!

  • IPhoto can't read disk

    Hi,
I'm using iPhoto '08 7.1.3 with a Sony DSC-H2 digital camera and a Digital Concepts MemoryStick card reader.
All was working fine until my imac wouldn't recognize my memorystick (received message that the "disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"). When i was in iPhoto it wouldn't register at all, i only was even able to get that message by pulling the memorystick out of the card reader and reinserting it.
after some experimenting, i got it to work by plugging the memorystick card reader directly into the port at the back of the imac instead of using a cable to connect the memorystick card reader to the imac. no problems for several months.
today, i received the same message. i could see the pictures just fine on my camera. finally i put the memorystick back in the camera and hten used the cable to connect the camera directly to the imac (therfore not using the card reader at all), and was able to import the pictures that way.
do you have any ideas what is causing this problem? if my card is "going bad" then why can i use it in my camera? could it be the card reader? i am out of ideas for future fixes and now feel it is going to not work in the future. i am happy to buy new card reader or memory stick but don't want to waste money either if it is something in the iphoto software someone may be familiar with.
    thanks!
    Jen

My best guess is the card reader from what you have described
Once you import the photos you may want to try using the camera to format your MS just to be sure that it is not a MS format problem
BTW - I just found a SanDisk Memory Stick USB reader at Radio Shack for $9.95 - small, compact (fits in my spare battery pocket with my spare batteries in my Sony Camera bag

  • Boot image does not exist and cannot read disk label errors.

Hi - I'm having a problem with installing Solaris 9 4/04 on a Netra T1. The Netra already has Solaris 7. I need to get this set up as a jumpstart server but it can't find the boot image. I'm using a brand new bonafide installation disk - not a copy. The system won't let me install/upgrade to Solaris 9 either. I get an error stating that disk label can't be read. I've tried swapping out the CDROM but I still get the same errors. Does anyone know what or why this may be happening? (Oh - and another strange thing - like I said the CDs are the original but there doesn't appear to be a cdrom/cdrom0/s0 directory. The directory I see is cdrom/cdrom0/sol_9_404_sparc/Solaris_9/Tools)
ERROR: Install boot image /cdrom/sol_9_404_sparc/Solaris_9/Tools/Boot does not exist

I appreciate any help at all - is there anyone out there who can tell me what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks

Hi check that you are booting of the right cd. Make sure it is soalris 9 software 1/2 if that fails then it may well be that your cd is buggered. most likely it is buggered it it cant find the boot image.

  • Can't open disk label package

    Hi,
i just tried to make a boot DVD for Solaris 9 9/05 from a image file (.iso)
the iso file size is about 4.383GB.
tried with the nero express with the option copy image to disk.
succefully burnt the details, even the expected .flar file exists in the burnt DVD.
But when i tried in the SUN machine E2900, i got the following error,
    Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
ERROR: disk-label do_read: Short disk read
    Can't open disk label package
    ERROR: Can't open boot-device
    - I guess the fashion in which we are writing an image file to the DVD matters. if somebody faced the same situation, please do suggest me how to proceed ?

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
important files that we are unable to access now.
I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
"If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
the external drive back in to your new computer. "
Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".

  • "Can't Read Or Write to disk" Video Won't Transfer To Ipod

I have transfered videos to my ipod in the past but I have two tv shows from the Itunes story that won't transfer.
They are in the correct mpeg 4 whatever format. My itunes is the most resent version, but for some reason I keep getting the same error.
"Cannot Read Or Write To Disk".
    HELP??!!
      Windows XP

I've got this problem too. My 5g iPod 30gig syncs after about 3 minutes with iTunes then after loading songs and videos after 10 minutes i get the same message your getting - "Can't Read Or Write to disk". I think theres some kind of USB2 conflict or something. All my other USB devices work fine. All my drivers and software is up-to-date.

  • "Can't read from or write to disk...." iPod error

I recently switched from my old PowerBook G4 (running Leopard 10.5.2) to a newer MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.5). I migrated my account and permissions from the PB to the MacBook Pro, and everything is working just fine except for iTunes (version 8.0.2) and my older 160 GB iPod Classic (running 1.1.2).
NOTE: THE VERSION OF iTunes ON THE PB WAS VERSION 8.0.1.
Since the migration, I've been getting this "can't read from or write to disk..." error whenever I attempt to sync my iPod to iTunes. Previously, I'd never had any problems. I have tried to restore the iPod using iTunes - didn't work. I have tried different USB to dock connector cables - didn't work. I have even tried completely re-formatting the iPod using Disk Utility - didn't work. Everytime I begin syncing the iPod, it starts out just fine. At varying degrees of completion it ALWAYS fails with the same error.
I had an idea. I tried syncing the iPod to a different computer - my G5 4 x 2.5 GHz (running Leopard 10.5.5) with iTunes (version 8.0.2). I still got the same error. I haven't dropped it, submerged it in water or done anything to it that would otherwise compromise its functionality. So, I'm at a loss.
    PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
Does anyone have any other suggestions? - OTHER THAN BUYING A NEW IPOD

    UPDATE:
OK, after the visit to my Genius Bar; I thought of a variable that wasn't previously considered. Because their transfer of media was successful without the slightest hitch, I had to figure out something else.
Everytime I had tried to sync the iPod with my various Macs, I was using the same process. Since all of my music and movies "live" on an external 500 GB drive, I was attempting to use that same drive whenever I would try to sync. It occurred to me that possibly the failing was in the drive and not the iPod.
I have part of that library on a Power Mac G4 867 DP (running 10.4.9). I updated the iTunes on that machine to 8.0.2, connected the iPod and made a successful transfer of a large amount of media!
My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the 500 GB drive to stop hanging on transfer and update of my Genius information. The drive just completely stalls and I get the spinning wheel from iTunes and the application ceases to respond. When I force quit iTunes, the drive recovers fine. I don't have any problems transferring data to and from it and Disk Utility reports that the drive is healthy.
I have tried re-installing iTunes on all affected Macs - didn't help. I believe my problem may exist in the iTunes Library file or in the associated .xml document. My only concern is that if I do a completely fresh install of iTunes where those files would be re-created, I would lose all of my play and ratings data as well as the information about when my files were added. On a related note, when playing the music from this drive through iTunes. I don't have any issues at all.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • Ipod Touch message "itunes can neither read nor write to "my Name" disk.

While syncing my Touch on I- Tunes, everything stopped and the message was "can neither read or write to B-----J-----"s ipod disk. I was on the phone for hours with Apple support, sent the Touch back twice to no avail. Finally found a newly acquired song from I-tunes stopped the sync in its' tracks and could not be recovered from. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a second gen which I received today as a replacement from Apple as they thought that might solve my problem. I found a recently acquired song, David Gilmore's "Where We Start " caused the crash. I did a manual load of the touch after a restore of it"s software and tunes. I watched the computer screen as I updated several songs at a time. I recreated the problem three times so I am confident I know what caused it but the only way I know around it is the slow process of a manual update. I have reported it to Itunes because this has taken me two weeks to figure out.
