Can't Rename or Move Folders in LightRoom 2

Hi,
I moved from LR 1.4 to 2.
Now I can't move or rename folders in the Library Module. Can you help?
Also, I still have LR 1.4 on my computer. Is this unsafe?
Is it safe to use 2.1 Beta?
I've already lost files because I didn't know you shouldn't run Time Machine with LR.
Thanks for any help.
Best,
Mitchell

The method for renaming of folders in Lr2.x was changed from that found in Lr1.x.
Right click on folder to activate the context menu - you should rename is on the menu list.
There is no harm in leaving Lr 1.4 on your computer, but you should note that it cannot open Lr2.x catalogs.
Lr 2.1 is more stable that 2.0, so upgrading would be a good move.

  • Can't rename or delete folders because thumbs.db is accessed / locked

    Hy techguys!
I have a problem deleteing or renaming folders on a network share.
When I look at the opened files on the Server I noticed that the Thumbs.db in the folder is opened by a user.
But the User have already closed the folder.
If i disconnect the Session on the Server the folder can be renamed or deleted.
The other way is to wait and the Session will close automatically. This lasts between minutes to houres?
Anyone an Idea why the connection to the thumbs.db were not closed?
    Thanks

  • Lightroom 2.4/Vista won't let me rename or move folders

When I try to drag a folder to a new location in the hierarchy, I get the following message, "Warning: Could not complete the folder move. An unknown error occurred."  When I right-click on a folder, choose rename, type a new name and hit enter, I get this message, "The folder (name) could not be renamed or moved."
I don't know if I have LR 2.4 or Vista to thank for this feature.  I bought LR 2.3 a few days ago and installed it on a laptop with Windows XP.  Moving and renaming folders worked as advertised.  I then installed LR on my new DELL Studio 15 laptop with Vista (32 bit).  LR then prompted me to upgrade to 2.4, which I did.  So I've made 3 changes simultaneously: new computer, new OS, new version of Lightroom.  Where do I go from here?

You're quite right. I compared the permissions in a folder that works with one that doesn't, and they are different. I got bogged down in the computer science trying to change the permissions, but I'll become an expert later; for now, I'm using a different drive, and everything is working fine. Thanks much.

  • Can I rename and move a catalog?

I recently made a full backup of my LR2 catalog, (18,000 photos) which was on my PC, and transferred it to my new Mac. When I made the backup, I accidentally included a folder of personal photos, which I would have preferred to be a second catalog.
So, I just exported the entire folder of personal photos as a new catalog. All went well. I then deleted the photos from the original catalog. Now, I have two catalogs one is named "Personal Photos" and the other is named "Full Backup." Well, that won't do.
I'd like to rename the "Full Backup" catalog to something more descriptive of the work stuff included. Also, both catalogs are in the Pictures folder, but they follow different paths afterwards. The Backup catalog is under pictures > Lightroom Catalog > Full Backup > Photos > (then the various sub folders). The Personal Photo Catalog is under Pictures > Lightroom > Personal Photos.
Is there a way to rename the Full backup and then move both catalogs so they take essentially the same path?

Steve, you have to remember that LR's works as a database - anything you do (move etc) within LR will be recognised whilst anything done outside of LR causes it a headache lol. So if you start shifting/dragging folders around outside of LR the links will be lost, lots of question marks will appear in the corner of your images and you'll then have the laborious process of telling LR where the images are now to be found.
Within LR's library (left hand panel) you can right click and rename folders if you want and these will also be renamed in the OS's folder structure. The same applies to moving folders - just hold down with the left mouse button and drag the folders to where you want to.
So in short, DO NOT drag within Finder if you want to spare yourself and LR a headache but instead do the dragging from within LR itself which will also be reflected in finder.

  • I can't rename or move RAW files in Bridge (Mac)

Permissions are all set to read/write in finder and other file formats are fine. Batch rename just does nothing, trying to move it gets the error message "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient permissions"
Running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 and all software is up to date.
    Help?

    Alas, I just found a jpeg I can't move.
There are two things to try also.
Don't know if you have cached a lot of files already but personally I would manual dump the Cache file for Bridge and also the second option, dump the plist file for bridge.
You have to cache the files again but that takes only a bit of time, depending on amount and file size.
Also you have to go to the user library that by default is hidden in 10.7. I'm still on 10.6 but there are a lot of solutions on Google to retrieve the user library.
Quit Bridge (and for safety all other CS Suite apps.)
in the user library preferences folder find the Bridge  (still not clear what version you are using?) plist file but for CS5 that is Bridge version 4 (com.adobe.bridge4.plist) and manual drag to the trash.
Then in the same library caches folder go to Adobe/BridgeCS5 / and in here delete both the cache folder and plug in to the trash.
Again run check and repair permissions on your Mac and then restart Bridge again with option key and again reset preferences.
Yes, you have to recreate the custom settings but that is only a few minutes, al your saved workspaces and keyword list are still in place and workspace reset gets your saved workspaces back (only without the UI colors, but those are also easy to recreate)

  • Can't rename iPhoto movies

In Front Row, the name given to my movies recorded on a digital photo camera stays the same even if I change the name in iPhoto. For instance, say I want to rename a short clip from H348602 which the camera saves it as, to "Test". . . I do so in iPhoto via the Info button and things look fine, but Front Row still calls it H348602. Is there any way to let it show it's name?

Interesting. I'm unable to get my digital camera's movies to appear in Front Row at all. I never really looked before, but I do have several. If I look at the album in the "Photos" module and select an albums that only has a movie in it, I get an error "beep" and I have to force-quit Front Row.
Besides that, are you changing the name of the movie in the Finder? Can you not change the name in iPhoto? Or have you tried both?
EDIT: Never mind. I re-read your previous posts. I was able to right-click on one of the videos in iPhoto and choose "Show File" which revealed the original file in my iPhoto library. I option-dragged the file into my user's "Movies" folder and re-named it in the Finder there. Then it appeared in my Videos module with the new name. Maybe iPhoto's organization won't allow renaming the files?

  • Can't rename newly created Folders

I updated to Tiger 10.4.9. Now I cannot rename any folders, new or existing. If I do "Get Info," the screen goes blank then returns to regular without changes to the folder.
    regards, Gordon

    Gordon,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like your problem may be either a Finder or Contextual Menu issue.
Before you try anything else, Repair Disk Permissions.
If it is a Finder issue, it may be helpful to find the com.apple.finder.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag it to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for normal finder behavior.
If it is a Contextual Menu problem, can you identify any corrupted or incompatible third party files in the following folders:?
    Macintosh HD/System/Library/Contextual Menu Items
    Macintosh HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Contextual Menu Items
If so, you may be able to uninstall/reinstall the associated application.
Consider temporary sequential manual removal/isolation of the suspect file to verify CM functionality and finder stability
    ;~)

  • Can I rename or move backup files from my Time Capsule?

I have replalced my Macbook Pro with a new one with the same name. I have backup files on Time Capsule (Time Machine files) that I need to preserve for now, but I want to start backing up the new MB Pro without Time Capsule mixing the old with the new (since they have the same name). So I'd like to move the old files to a different drive or rename them so Time Machine won't use them, but don't want to corrupt them in the process. And if that works, will I still be able to open them to restore select files if needed?
Really appreciate any advice on this.
    Thanks
    Fred

You will corrupt your backups if you change any name in your backed up folders. What I recommend you to do is to move your backup files of the old Mac to another external drive, so you do not have them stored on the Time Capsule taking up space for the new Mac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Simple Question: Can I rename old backup folders?

I've gone through a couple MacBooks (changed MAC addresses and such), so I have about 3 different "computers" in the Backups.backupdb folder. Two of the three folders are no longer "live" backup databases, and are effectively only around because I still want the data. I'd like to rename the folders to something more distinct when I'm "browsing other Time Machine backups". Can I simply change the name of the folder, or do I need to update some plist-files somewhere as well?

Do NOT ever modify or change anything in the TM backup directory. You will probably lose everything if you do.
    1. If you want to "rename" an old backup, run TM and in the TM window which is the only proper way to access TM files, find the old backup and restore it to your computer. This is the file you can rename.
    2. Now, you can rename it and let it become backed up again with the new name.
    3. Finally, once you are assured it is backed up again, then using the TM interface, you can safely delete the old backup.
For these operations you use the Action gear in the TM finder window.

  • How can I rename my Bookmark folders?

I am using Firefox V 25.0.1 on my Mac with OS X V 10.8.5. I used to be able to rename folders, but have been unable to do so. I have no "Bookmarks Manager" or anything identified as a "Library." I have no "Manage my folder" menu tab or "Properties" tab and I am unable to highlight the folder name to rename it. I see nothing under the "filled-in star" in the sidebar. Any way I can rename a sub-folder?

Here is the easiest way. Right click the bookmark (on the taskbar) then click properties. In the small window that will pop-up, you will see the current name in blue highlight - so change it to whatever short name you want it to be - then save. All done!!

  • Can't rename new untitled folders

I've never run into this problem that i can remember. I just went to create a new folder in my "applications" folder for a new browser I downloaded, and all of a sudden, i no longer "have sufficient access priviledges" to change the folder's name, and if i go to put a new folder or anything else into the Apps folder, I now have to "authenticate" with my password. What is this crap? I've never had to problems like this with my Applications folder before, so what happened?
Anyone else run into this? Not even repairing permissions or zapping the PRAM several times clear this up.

Glad you found a solution. Running the disk utility and verifying permissions doesn't work in most of the posts I've read about the topic.
Corrupted drives are just one of those features that Apple continues to use. I go through external terabyte drives like toilet paper (or diamonds depending on your income level) archiving projects. I just had a drive I was working with earlier today suddenly stop allowing my to create folders etc. I've had it happen about 5 times or more now on various OSx versions with various brands of hard drives. Seems to happen somewhat randomly but could have to do with other devices being plugged into your system at the same time and Mac can't handle it- corrupts the drive (today I plugged a camera into my computer via USB). The only solution I've found is to copy the data, reformat the drive, and copy the data back onto the drive. I appreciate user's optimistic view of Apple computers. It makes me want to believe that some of the other things that suck in life are actually amazing opportunities- and sometimes they are.

  • Why can i not access compressed folders with Lightroom?

    Hi,
I noticed that it is not possible to use folders or partitions that are compressed on a NT-FileSystem. In Lightroom's dialog the drive does not even appear at all!
    Could you please change this?

  • Cant move or rename  images or folders from within lightroom 5.

Lightroom wont allow me to move or rename either single images or folders within lightroom. Keep getting an unknown error occurred message. All images are currently on an external hard drive. Any ideas?

Yes. All images are imported into lightroom and editable. Green light is also showing on the folders tab just the same as with my c drive. I can move/rename images and folders etc from explorer but then have to locate them for lightroom to find.

  • LR4 from PC to Mac via ext drive - can't move folders

I'm in the process of migrating from Windows (7) to an iMac which has been a partial success re Lightroom but I'm having problems with moving folders / files within LR (4.4) and could do with some advice please.
On the Windows PC I had all of my photos on the hard-drive (with duplicate back-ups) and my intention was to move only a proportion of these onto the iMac, leaving older folders on an external drive - again with backups. To migrate to the iMac I had initial success as follows:
    1. Installed LR 4.4 on the iMac.
    2. Moved all photos onto an external drive from within LR.
    3. Copied across the lrcat and lrdta files and the presets to the iMac
    4. Started LR and loaded the copied catalogue - worked fine - see all my folders plus their question marks as expected.
    5. Was able to re-linked the folders (still on the external drive) within LR - question marks disappeared, able to access & develop folders/files on the ext drive within LR - good.
    6. Then the problems occurred when within LR I tried to move folders from the external drive to the iMac (into a top-level 'Lightroom Photos'  folder I created within Pictures) but the following then happens:
When I drag a folder up from the ext to the main drive I get the usual 'moving files on disk warning' box, click 'Move' to confirm but then I get an error message 'Could not complete the folder move. An unknown error occurred', click OK and the folder has remained on the external drive. Oddly, when I check via Finder the folder has been created within my 'Lightroom Photos' folder although it doesn't show there in LR and no photos are included in it - they're still on the hard-drive.
I did think this might be something to do with the format of the ext drive - it is shows as read only and is NFTS and I now understand this can be a problem when writing to it from an iMac - but I appear to be able to 'develop' photos on the external drive.
I did find a 'workaround' - in Finder I copied a folder directly into the 'Lightroom Photos' folder on the hard-drive and managed to link to it by clicking on the question mark originally created by the lrcat copy. Seems a bit cumbersome and I would then have to delete the originals from the ext drive but does this sound okay? And any ideas why I can't move them from the ext drive from within LR but can work on them whilst still on that drive? Thanks
    Gary

Just realised why I can 'develop' photos that are on the external drive - obviously because LR isn't editing the image is it? It's just amended the catalogue entry, so that explains that. Dumb of me not to realise that!
So does this bring me back to the problem being the NFTS formatted disk and my only solution is to copy the files within Finder and then re-link them?
