Can't see usb HDD connected to TC

I have a new 2TB TimeCapsule to which I connected a 1TB Seagate HDD formatted to Mac OS extended.  When I go to Finder the USB drive does not show up.  Nor does the power light on the drive come on.  When I connect the HDD directly to my Mac Mini it is visible.  Now get this, when I connect a usb hub to the TC and then plug the HDD into the USB hub, the drive appears in Finder.  No, the hub is not a powered hub. Any thoughts about why TC won't recognize the drive when it is plugged directly into the TC usb port?
Thanks

Yes, it is using a USB chip that the TC cannot talk to without a hub. This is due to lack of drivers I think.
I posted a thread to which I have no answers.. but if you would like to fill in the details I think it will explain what is happening.

Plugged external hd in airport extreme but can not see using IPad .I have downloaded app for airport & can find airport but does not show hard drive. How can I access files on external hard drive?

Unfortunately you can only access hard drives plugged in airport extreme or time capsule, from a Mac or a PC. iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) do not support this feature.

  • Cant see usb HDD connected to AE(n)

I accidentally unplugged power from my HDD while it was connected to my AE(n), and now I cant get the HDD to be recognized by the AE, or when connected directly to a computer with usb. Thankfully the HDD has firewire ports also, so i am able to access the drive that way. Any suggestions how to get this HDD to be recognized via usb again? Thanks in advance!

  • IMac i7: Slow boot when Ext USB HDD connected.

    Hello,
I have a weird issue with my iMac.
When i have an External USB HDD connected and powered on while booting it takes a very long time for the Apple logo to show up.
I'm guessing this has to do with the fact that my iMac is searching the External USB HDD for an bootable operating system.
Is there a way to preventing my iMac from doing this?
I don't have any OS on my External USB HDD.
    Thanks!

go into system prefs -> startup disk and select the disk with os x on it. that should solve the problem

  • Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

  • New iMac can't see Laserwriter Select connected to a PC on same LAN-- why?

I've just returned to the Mac universe after a five year hiatus. When I discovered how well Macs play with PCs and Unix these days, I decided to come back.
There's just one issue: I can't print to my Laserwriter Select 360, connected by parallel port to a Windows XP Pro PC on my LAN. My new iMac doesn't see the printer at all. The imac does see the PC's workgroup in the Network Neighborhood, and I can mount the shared volumes of that PC on the mac with no problem, so the Mac can talk to the PC for filesharing, anyway. (smb:// address used)
Applecare has no clue why I can't see the printer. They told me to turn on Windows Sharing and Print Sharing, but that had no effect. The Windows machines on my LAN can all see and print to the shared Laserwriter Select 360, no problem. They're all running Windows XP pro, latest patches.
The iMac of course has the latest Tiger. All machines are on my internal subnet 192.168.0.*.
I just got a new cartridge for the Laserwriter, and there's no reason to retire it-- that printer works great. I just can't believe/accept that the iMac can't be made to print to an Apple printer! (Also, I've heard that appletalk->ethernet bridge solutions are flaky so that's not an ideal route).
    Any/all ideas welcome.
    imac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Here's the result. The PC is on 192.168.0.2, and the iMac was assigned .18 by DHCP.
I just tried adding a lexmark printer to the PC (over USB) to see if there might be some difference. The other windows box on the lan sees the LexMark same as it sees the Laserwriter (and both show up in the output of smbclient below). Needless to say, the iMac doesn't see the LexMark either.
Thanks for your help with this one...

  • Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

  • Can't see external HDD while wanting to restore

I just had to restore my Mac, and luckily I backed up to a Ex HDD with Time Machine, but now I'm trying to restore it I've had nothing but problems.
Cmd+R gives me: No full system backups
    Migration Assistant: Can't see drive
    Setup: Can't see drive
I've run multiple repairs on it, and even mounted it to the network on another computer, but it still didn't come up.
I'm getting really frustrated, please help =/

But /Users, with your home folder inside it, should be there.
I lost the 200GB after I had to restore my Mac (when I tried to restore from my backup), then had to reinstall again due to me playing with the partitions =D
    Well, that does complicate things.
    If you're sure it's gone, I won't bug you anymore, but if you think there's a chance, I'm willing to try . . .

  • Windows 7 can't see USB disk (WD Passport) on Airport Extreme

I am needing some help. I just bought an Airport Extreme and everything is working but I can't see my files on the USB external drive from the Airport Extreme. I can see the drive inside of the Airport Utility but not over the network on my laptop.
    My laptop is Windows 7.
I read somewhere that I may need to reformat my WD Passport but how do I do that in windows 7 and will I lose my files on the drive if I do this?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me!

There are a number of posts related to issues between Windows 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
    o Search for: security
    o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    o Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
o Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
On the AEBS, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • MacBook Pro can't see MY wifi connection

Hi all,  Ok this has been bugging me for some time now, I've had a Macbook for around a year now and have notice that with some wifi routers my macbook can't see them until I  reboot the router I'm trying to find. This can be most annoying and is beginning to become a problem, my iphone and ipad can see the wifi router but my Macbook can't unless I reboot the router and then I mostly get a connection (although this is getting worse as i have to reboot the router more often) but if I leave the connection i.e turn off the MB or leave the house on returning I have to reboot the router to get connected again. I have made a few enquires in web search engines but haven't found anything of much help and the problem is still here. At first I thought it could be my router but this has happened on a few routers of friends that I have tried to connect to, although i can see lots of other connections so it shows that the MB can find routers but not all. Is anyone else having this problem or does anyone know a way to fix this?
    Cheers

    Hi guys,
I personally figured it out on why this problem occur, well let me just hit to the point.
What happens is that the router of the wifi channel is being changed automatically or someone might accidentally changed it. MBP can't detect wifi from certain wireless channel. So, we have to change the channel of the router wifi channel that may be detectable by your MBP.
    THE SOLUTION -
    1. Connect to the wifi from a active device to the router wifi that your MB can't detect or use Ethernet cable to get connected.
2.Once connected, access to the router wifi menu by entering the ip address on your net browser, eg:192.168.2.1
3.Then go to wifi setup or menu, and you may come across the wireless channel.
4.Switch the channel from any numeric to numeric that the router wifi can make your MB detect it.
eg: Wireless Channel - 6 (change it to -->) Wireless Channel - 11
5.Save the settings for the router wifi, exit, restart your MB and HAVE FUN!

  • Can't see AE when connecting to a wireless network

    Hi there,
I'm having problems joining my AE to an existing wireless network. I've configured the AE using the Airport Setup Assistant (I chose the 'setup new base station' option, and then 'connect to current wireless network'). The AE is glowing solid green. But, I can't see it at all in my Airport Admin Utility, or in the Airport status icon in my menu bar.
Can anyone suggest what I should do?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Sorry for a tardy reply but I've been out of the country. I'm a very basic guy so whenever I have experienced anything similar to your situation, I go to the beginning. I hard reset the ae, run it through setup assistant (vs. admin.) tell it I want to join the existing network enabling iTunes, naming the unit, etc. The only difference in what it sounds like you're doing and what I did was enable the unit to act as a WDS remote (I wanted to extend my range) feeding from the base. it sounds as though the unit can be seen but it is stretched for range. If you elect to do the hard reset, move your ax as close as reasonable to your existing base. After you have done the setup, the light will turn green, then flash amber (twice as I remember) and turn solid green again. You can then unplug it and move it where you need it. I am running three units to three stereos and the furtherest is about ninety feet away with multiple walls. It feeds off the closest ae which is only about thirty feet and the whole thing works as an all select or single select system with iTunes. I have airfoil from rogue amoeba but I have not found it to be as reliable in broadcasting to mutiple units as iTunes. Try it again (I hate to ask) and let us know.

  • G4 (MDD) with AirPort Can't See/Won't Connect to Wireless Networks

Hi all. I've seen topics/threads that get close to my question/problem, but not quite.
    I inherited a PowerMac G4 (MDD)/Dual 1 GHz/1.5 GB DDR SDRAM/running 10.3.9.
I purchased a used original AirPort card from eBay, opened up the machine, and plugged it in. When I went to update the software (from a CD), my machine told me that it was up to date (though one HD is running OS9 and one running OSX -- so the software wouldn't install because the HD running OSX said it was up-to-date and the HD running 9 said it was impossible). The machine recognizes the card/shows it gray in the toolbar/says it has Firmware Version 8.70 in the System Profile.
My problem is that the AirPort can't see any wireless networks 99% of the time, even though 3 (including mine) are in range all the time. I've seen my network only flicker into possibility a few times, and even though I've disabled all security measures on the wireless router (Linksys Wireless-G, Model WRT54G), it simply won't connect. One time in 3 hours it momentarily looked like it was going to connect, then said "out of range," then disappeared completely. It has seen 0 wireless networks for the past hour.
I've read everything far and wide trying to solve this issue and am totally stuck. At first I thought I needed an antenna for the AirPort, but this is an internal card, so that doesn't seem right. I know the AirPort card (and not Extreme) is right because a) I don't have a FW800 port and b) the machine recognizes this card. Finally, I thought it may have had to do with the WPA security on the Linksys, but even with security disabled...nothing.
I'm feeling very frustrated. Any advice?
    Thank you very much.

Thanks, Tom. I did as you suggested, and the Max Signal under the Log is showing a red 12, which is terrible, yes? What, exactly, does this tell me? That this is simply a case of old technology (AirPort b) struggling to communicate with new technology (Linksys g) over a medium distance (Linksys is in next room, through wall)? If plugging straight into the ethernet were an option, I'd just do it. But I can't get my G4 onto the Internet without running cords down the hallway and through my TV room, which is an obvious eyesore.
Is there a chance this AirPort card is only partly functional and I should return it? Or do I need to accept the fact that this G4 needs to either be moved closer to the Linksys router or be plugged in directly?
    Thank you.

  • Can't see available WLAN Connection on Tecra A5 but ok with Tecra M5

    Hi,
    I have the following problem:
I have a DLink Wireless Access point (DWL-3200AP) configured in my office.
On my laptop, I can see my WLAN and I'm able to connect with my Tecra M5.
I can see the WLAN on the configfree graphic tool.
Now the problem .... I bougth a Tecra A5 for my boss, everything is working fine ... Radio is active ...
Wireless card OK ... BUT I can't see the WLAN ... can't find it ...
I checked everything but I have no idea why ...
Does someone can help me ?
    Thx
    Math.

I would suggest checking the router settings.
In my knowledge many WLan routers support a hiding WLan option.
In such cases the WLan is not visible and you have to know the name of the WLan to searching it.
I think you know the name of the WLan therefore I would recommend entering the Wireless Network connection properties and then choosing the Wireless Networks tab.
There you can Add the preferred networks. You have to enter the WLan name and the encryption.
