Can't set up printer - port doesn't show an Appletalk tab

I installed 10.2.8 recently. I was unable to set up my printer (LaserWriter Pro 600) because there was no Appletalk tab in the System Preferences > Network > printer port tab (message received was that Appletalk hadn't been started). In fact, the tab arrangement was identical to the modem port. I noticed earlier that when starting Internet Connect, the default port was the Printer port (very annoying); I'd guess there's a connection between these conditions.
Does anyone know why this is occuring and how to fix/get around it?

Starting in either 10.1 or 10.2, appletalk is not available on the localtalk-capable printer or modem ports of G3 computers. Appletalk is only available on TCP/IP-capable connections (ethernet and PPP-modem).
You need to get the Pro 600 onto ethernet (an ethernet to localtalk bridge, for example)

When you use the Canon driver, the 2 sided printing is set in a different location. There is an entire menu dedicated to it (at least on my mx892). The printer dialog box has a menu selector in the middle of the screen (I think it says "layout" by default). If you click on it, you will see the duplexing options at the bottom. Much more flexibility than the single checkbox available with "airprint". The interface is unusual (at least for me) but you can pre-set up many different configurations (Fast Duplex, Fine Single-sided, B&W, Photo, etc etc.)

How can I set up printing to queues on a Windows 2008 server directly from the iPad apps and not from third-party applications without using AppleTalk or Bonjour?

We have a Windows 2003/2008 server-based network with a dedicated print server which we would like to be able to print to over Wi-Fi. How can I set up the printers on the iPad without downloading a third party application such as Print Central or Print N Share? I want to just click the arrow and "Print" then choose the printer, which doesnt show up. I want to be able to use the existing TCP/IP-based network that we have to reach these queues, not having to install Bonjour or AppleTalk to reach them.

This would really be the "Holy Grail" right now. I think this a feature that every large organization requires. AirPrint works on a small scale, but is not really an enterprise class application. In addition it uses the Bonjour discovery process which is difficult in a large LAN WAN environment. For those that would remind me, I am aware of the enhancement link

How can I set the printer to continuously print from a roll of paper?

I need to print something continuously from one long piece of paper. I have googled this but all I find are answers on how to do this with an epsom printer! Just got my first HP printer today (J110) and pleased with it so far, but I'm having trouble finding out how to set it to continuously print.

In the case of Photoshop, you are placing an image on a canvas and can position the image to suit. Word and Excel have a Page Setup menu that lets you set the margin positions - which know since you have got the output you wanted. Understood. Unfortunately you don't get that option in Preview. The image will be centred - both horizontal and vertical - based on the paper size and the printer you have selected in the print dialog. You could create a custom paper size with the margins you want to position the image and then use that custom paper in Preview. But your workaround of using Word gives you more control over the positioning of the image.

Can/can't set up printer?

-Here's what works: Plugging the HP Photosmart D1100 printer into an imac, connect to that imac using home-networking and use the printer.
-Here's what should/doesn't work: Plugging the printer directly into the Airport Extreme base station, connecting to the base station to use the printer.
It shows up in the print/fax in system prefs, but when I try to add it I get a message saying "software update needs internet access" providing a "network diagnostics" button, but network diagnostics tells me everything looks ok and brings me back to square 1. I'm tired of these circles and want it to work! I shouldn't have to rely on a computer that may be asleep; I should be able to access this printer with just the base station. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Can aperture set up printer profiles?

i seem to remember somewhere that aperture asked me if i wanted to print something to be scanned in to balance colors? i didn't have the printer then but i do now, is there any way to call this back up? did i dream that?

Printer Driver Doesn't Show Up.

I have a Canon Pixma MP500 (Multifunction). It's only about two months old.
Up until last weekend, I was still running Jaguar. My printer worked perfectly. I upgraded to Tiger on Saturday and didn't try to print anything until today. When I tried to, I saw my printer was no longer installed. However, it was detected. When I tried to add it, the correct driver was not listed. I put in the install disc that came with the printer, re-installed the software and restarted. The correct driver still didn't show up. I went to Canon's site, downloaded the drivers, installed again and restarted. They're still not listed. I tried to choose some of the drivers that are listed to see if I can print an email, but anything I spool just sits there in the queue.
What do I do next? I know it's plugged in correctly. I haven't touched it since I set it up two months ago and it was working perfectly fine just before I upgraded to Tiger.

Pb find printer, but doesn't find drivers; drivers are installed.

Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane

My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?

Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.

Mandatory Variable set in a view doesn't show in Web template ?

Hi Experts,
I have a mandatory user-input variable in my query. I build a view based on the query. When I opened the query analyzer I had to select a value for my variable since it is mandatory. I did so and built my view. I based my BI web template on my view. When i execute the template the variable screen doesn't show, the value of my variable is the one I entered when I built the view and there is no way i can change this value from the Web template. Is this expected behaviour ? If so how can i build a view when i have a mandatory variable withoit setting its value in the analyzer ? The user has to set it later in the BI template.

Actually the variable has a default value which is defined in a function. This default can be overriden. The problem is that when defining the view you need to specify a value or leave the default. In any case in Web Template you are not given the option of changing whatever you put in the query analyzer. i am puzzled how this could happen.
