Can you restore a mac os x 10.7 TM backup on a 10.8 MacBook Pro?

I have an iMac Late 2006 and have recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13-inch as an upgrade. I have a time machine back up of my iMac and I would now like to restore my macbook pro from the backup of my iMac.
My iMac backup is from OS X 10.7 and as my MacBook Pro is brand new, it comes with OS X 10.8.
I am not sure if you can do this restore if the operating systems are different. If you can, can someone let me know and also how to do it?
Thanks

You can restore it. The Mac will ask you for a backup when you start it up, so connect the external disk and choose what you want to restore. If you have configured the computer, open Migration Assistant, connect the external drive and press From a Mac, PC, Time Machine backup...

  • How can you tell if a computer problem is a hardware or software problem? My Macbook pro is always freezing!!

I've been using my Macbook Pro for about 5 months. The first 3 months were great. But now it makes my life harder!!!
    It's always freezing.
    Any suggetions.

Something doesn't sound right here. You say you have been using the MBP for 5 months and your profile say you are running 10.4.10. A MBP bought five months ago should have Snow Leopard 10.6. Of did you get this MBP used five months ago? Before we can help you must tell the straight story.

  • HT4859 Can you restore an app prior to the last three backups? If so, how?

I have an app that's frozen up at the logo screen. I did a restore of the iPad, but it wouldn't give me an option before the last three. everything restored just fine; however, found that i really need to go back about a week. I don't have that option on my iPad. Can this be done via computer? Any suggestions? I have iPad with retina, have the latest updates, etc.

iCloud only retains your last three iCloud backups.  Older backups are no longer available.  You could check to see if you have an older one on your computer by opening iTunes, going to Preferences>Devices and checking the Backups list.  If not, there's no way to restore it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you want to erase the disk, reinstall Mac OS X and your Mac didn't come with DVDs or you have OS X Mountain Lion or Lion:
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting.
    2. Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    3. Install Mac OS X.
If your Mac came with DVDs:
    1. Insert the OS X DVD that came with the Mac and press C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
    3. Install Mac OS X

As many times as you want till you delete or modify it.
It's YOUR backup, a copy of all your stuff.

  • Can you restore from a backup that was made on a previous version of iOS?

    Hello.
I had an iPhone 3GS unning whatever the latest proper version of iOS currently is at the time of writing (4.3.5, is it?) but on Saturday I was on a rather drunken night out and I lost my phone.
    Silly me.
But I was out of contract and the new iPhone (4S or 5 or whatever) is going to be announced on Tuesday next week (just been confirmed by Apple today) so I'm just going to make do with an old, spare Nokia until the new iPhone is available in the UK.
Once the new iPhone launches I will buy it, plug it into iTunes and just restore from backup and I'm back in business.
Except for one thing... The new iPhone will have iOS 5 installed and my last backup before I lost my 3GS was done on iOS 4.3.5.
Is this going to be a problem or can you restore from a backup made with an older version of the OS?
I've never done it before so I don't know.
    J

You "should" have no problem doing that. I say should, because you can't restore a backup made with a higher iOS on a device running a lower iOS, I.E. - you can't restore a backup made from a device running, let's say iOS 4.3.5 on a device running iOS 4.2.10. However, iOS 5.0 will present many new features and since it has not been released, I have no way of stating with certainty that doing as you plan will not present any problems. Past history indicates it won't, but we'll have to wait & see.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

can you restore your iphone4 with no sim - my son wants to use it like an ipod...

no, you cannot.  However, the SIM doesn't need to be active.  An old deactivated SIM from the carrier to which the phone is locked (if the phone is locked) will do.

  • Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

    Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
    Any ideas?
