Cannot add Gmail to Apple Mail in Mavericks

I cannot add Gmail to Apple Mail in Mavericks.  I have tried adding it as a Google account AND as an "other" account.  I have tried manually filling in the settings, using the instructions from Gmail's website:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465 or 587
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server
I have tried with both part 465 and prt 587 for the outgoing mail server.  Still, it tells me, "There was a problem setting up the account."

Go to Mail->Preferences->Accounts and create an account

  • Cannot send gmail in apple mail since upgrading to Yosemite

Since I upgraded to Yosemite, I am unable to send any mail from any imap accounts.  My gmail and work account are offline.  I've tried all of the tricks others have posted and tried to reset the accounts up again.  I left one of my iMacs using Mavericks and have no problems.  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Take a look at the article linked below, it provides a lot of great troubleshooting suggestions that’ll resolve most issues like the one you’re seeing when sending emails on your iMac after upgrading to OS X Yosemite.

  • Gmail no longer pushes new messages to Apple Mail in Mavericks

I Googled [gmail push Mavericks OR 10.9 "use idle command"], and restricted results to the last year; absolutely nothing came up, so I decided to post this:
Gmail seems to no longer push email to Apple Mail in Mavericks—at least for me.
In OS 10.8 and before, enabling "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" caused Gmail to instantly push new emails to Apple Mail.  No longer.
With the new "Check for new messages Automatically" option, new messages aren't coming in at all, or with severe delays (I don't recall which).  When I change it to "Check for new messages Every minute," it checks every minute, which is okay, but not what I had in previous OSs: instant pushing of new messages.
Has anyone managed to solve this problem?
Or does anyone at least know what's causing the problem, and whether it's potentially fixable?

Nevermind. I am blind as a bat. I found the answer. There's an option under VIEWING in the preferences for Display unread messages with boldl font. I don't know why that is unchecked.

  • Using Gmail with Apple Mail.

Has anyone else encountered strange behaviors retrieving your gmail through Apple Mail. The issue I'm having is it seems to pull in the last couple days worth of email every time I open apple mail to check my mail. Pretty annoying when you get a lot of email. Any suggestions?

Couldn't wait. Found it under Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced.
I changed it from One Week (the default ? ) to One Day.
    That should help.
I have my Apple Mail program set to FORWARD every message that comes into Mail to a Gmail address, and on Gmail I have preferences set to reply to all messages from the email address they are sent to, so my email that goes to Mail generates replies that look like they come from Mail.
Allows me to keep a record of all emails I receive.

  • HT2500 Can I import my contacts from Gmail into Apple mail (Snow Leopard)?

Can I import my contacts from Gmail into Apple mail (Snow Leopard)?

That says Reset Documents and Data, not Contacts.
I want you to go to www.icloud.com, login and see how many contacts are there, because they are all the iCloud contacts. Any contacts that are not there, are not on iCloud.

  • HI, as of today can't use Gmail with Apple Mail anymore. neither on Macbook Pro nor on ipad. But is still works on my iphone, guess because I didn't update on the iphone. So can anybody tell me what happened and how I can fix it?

    Hi,
as of today I can't access Gmail via Apple Mail anymore. Last night I updated on Macbook Pro and ipad, and both don't allow me to access gmail anymore. Gmail still  works on my iphone, I guess, because I didn't update that one.
Can anybody tell me what happended and how to fix it?
    Thx
    Chris

    ChrisK21,
Make sure your settings match up with this:

if wouldn't hurt to delete the account entirely and just re-set it up in preferences.

  • Trouble sending mail through Gmail with Apple Mail

I am having trouble sending email through Gmail using Apple Mail.  I have entered the correct password thorugh the two step verification from Google and the Connection Doctor says that I'm connected to the IMAP and SMTP, but I get the error that my email address was rejected by the gmail server.
    Any thoughts?

Google has instruction posted for setting up your iPhone with gmail. I followed these directions and it worked perfectly.

  • I get "you cannot add events to a mail calendar" when I try to add events

I was in Mail and created a to do and a new calendar was created called "[email protected]>calendar". When I try to add an event to this new calendar I get the error "you cannot add events to a mail calendar". I can create new calendars under the "[email protected]" group heading. And I have tried to import iCal events into a new calendar created under the "[email protected]" heading but, when I close iCal all the newly imported events disappear.
Is iCal corrupt? Can someone explain what this calendar is for? Doesn't seem to be of any use if you cannot events to it.

this is happening to me as well, I cannot create an event in our shared calendar

  • Gmail / apple mail, assuming mavericks upgrade issue. Messages from/to and subject header do not match displayed message

    Hi Everyone
Hoping someone has had a similar issue and can help me sort it out.
Since Upgrading to mavericks a few weeks ago, I notice the follwoing issue in my apple mail when searching older messages (newer ones seem fine at the moment).
A lot ( I cant say all, but quite a few well into the 80-90% plus of messages sent pre update) have gotten scrambled. I can search from/ to and subject headers, and they correspond with each other. But when i select the message Im looking for, the message desplayed is from a different sender (with a diferent subject)
Ex I search for JohnDoe (happens if i use search function or just go manually looking thru folders) and subject "Quote", Message comes up (or I find as in manual search). When i select the message the message displayed is not the correct one. Its From JaneDoe with a subject "Thanksgiving" and its message.
Obviously making it a little tricky to track down previous emails.
My mail provider is Gmail (which I have heard mavericks / apple mail have been having lots of issues with).
Hopeefully someone knows what I can do
    Thanks
    BigRed81

    Hello BigRed81,
I have a question on this subject.  I am having the same issue.  I followed the link to the support page for rebuidling a mailbox.  It states :
"When you rebuild mailboxes for IMAP and Exchange accounts, locally stored messages and attachments are discarded, and the messages and attachments are downloaded again from the server to your Mac. Your mailbox appears empty until the download is complete."
I use gmail just for my Inbox.  I pull off all of my messages from the server by filing them on my mac.  So my concern is if I rebuild a mailbox, my mail account is gmail imap, and I do not have copies of my emails on the gmail server anymore that I will lose the majority of my mail because there is nothing to download again.
Do you know if this will happen?  Or I should not be concerned?
    Thanks
    Mykol

  • Gmail's Apple-Mail-To-Do's no longer appear under Reminders

I use gmail as my mail utility (set for IMAP).
Before the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.7, my To Do's appeared in Apple Mail under Reminders > To Do > Gmail. They also appeared in iCal. On my iPhone they appeared in the Apple Mail To Do folder. If I added a new To Do, everything synced.
The other day, all of my gmail folders temporarily disappeared from Apple Mail, however, they began to automatically re-appear over several hours. (A problem with a gmail server?) (BTW, before this occurred I noticed lots of activity under "Mail Activity", copying To Do's between gmail and my mac, even though I had no recently added, edited, or deleted a To Do.)
All is restored, except my To Do's no longer appear in Apple Mail under Reminders > To Do > Gmail. (My To Do's still appear on my iPhone under Apple Mail To Do, and they still appear in Apple Mail under Gmail > Apple Mail To Do.)
If I add a new To Do (by highlighting Gmail under Reminders > To Do, then add the new To Do) the new To Do fails to appear in my "Apple Mail To Do" folder and thus can't be viewed on my iPhone.
All I want is to be able to track a list of To Do's on my Mac (in both iCal and Mail) and on my iPhone.
    Help!

    UPDATE:
Hmm, well it seems to have recreated the weird folder 'ToDos.mbox (Server)' (that is the name of it on the server).
I have successfully moved my to dos from Apple Mail To Do to ToDos.mbox, so now my question is, as I have deleted Apple Mail To Do and just have the oddly named one, how do I get Apple Mail to rename it and use a more user-friendly name like it used to. Basically I just want it back to being called 'Apple Mail To Do'. (Renaming it on the server will just confuse Apple Mail again.)

  • I cannot send gmail emails from Mail on my IMac.

I cannot send emails from Mail on my iMac using gmail. I get the following error message:
The SMTP server “relay.gradwell.net” rejected the password for user “succeed”
Neither of these have anything to do with my username or password, which I have checked are correctly entered in Accounts.

  • Add account in Apple Mail greyed out

After migration to Yosemite I imported added my accounts and imported my mailboxes in Apple Mail. This seemed to work fine.
Now I want to add another mail account in Apple Mail (preferences -> accounts) and I cannot click the + (plus) as it is greyed out.
I then added the account through system settings and it appeared in Mail.
After a while (about an hour of inactivity) this account disappears from both Mail and system preferences.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Found this and trying it myself . . . https://discussions.apple.com/message/23992956#23992956. Sounds plausible but it is a work around. Apple should look into it . . .

  • Gmail on iPhone4 not syncing with Gmail on apple Mail

    Hi. iPhone newb here.
I have a gmail account that I access through apple mail. I just got a new iPhone4 and set up my gmail account on it. My problem is that the two don't seem to sync up. When I read or delete an email on apple mail on my home computer, it doesn't get marked as read or deleted on my iPhone.
Is there a way to resolve this? It's annoying to have to manually keep them both consistent.
    Much thanks in advance,
    Steve

You need to change your Gmail settings from POP to IMAP (on the Gmail website). AFTER you have made this change, delete the Gmail account from your iPhone and then re-add it. You will need to do the same delete/re-add on your laptop.
After doing these steps, your iPhone, laptop, and webmail should all be in sync with each other.

  • My Yosemite POP account with Gmail and Apple Mail is gone

I just noticed in the last few days that my Apple Mail Gmail account has changed from POP to iMap without my intervention.  It no longer has the drop-down box to choose one or the other.  I want to keep my Apple Mail as a POP account, but I can no longer change it.  Is this possible?  If so, what do I do.  FYI, on my iOS devices I use iMap accounts for my gmail mail. Thanks!

You can try reconfiguring the account as POP. Delete the account, then add it back. After filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key while clicking Continue. Fill in the necessary information, then click continue until all screens are filled in.

  • GApps/Gmail to Apple Mail Setups: Part 1 "Types"

    LITERATURE
    http://eprints.rclis.org/14165/1/CHI_2004_lb172-gwizdka.pdf
    http://inboxzero.com/articles/
    ACTIONS
Do - Completes task associated with email
Defer - The email isn't best answered by you
    Delete - Message is deleted
Delegate - Task assigned to other though any method
    Respond - Reply!
    TYPES
All three cases I'm laying out here will deal with the inbox zero approach.
    Cleaner
    "Delete-Centric"
    deletes email as primary action
    does not or rarely archives
may use basic stars or flags
    "The Hybrid"
    Cleaner-Keeper: "Archive-centric"
limited "just stars/flags" or no tagging of messages
could use archive instead of delete preferring to keep everything
    Keeper
    "Sort-centric"
messages are categorized in advance thru filters
or from the inbox and distributed to folders/labels
We're obviously excluding those users (and there are a lot of them) who keep all of their messages in the inbox and either rely on unread and read counts/ indicators and/or emails per view/page. What could we name these people? Feelers? Bleeders?
I'm very unfond of this method and the literature suggests that this choice is vastly inferior to the other approaches.
I'm very fond of the hybrid approach with the user adding filters in gmail to manage their wanted email subscriptions and removing themselves from lists they do not want.
Am I missing any types here?
    Anyone got anything to add?
Part II A-C will deal with the actual setups for each type.

The outgoing mail saved as drafts issue, results when you are composing a message, Mail saves it to drafts folder on the server. It's supposed to removed the draft version when sending but often it does not, leaving you confused over whether the message has been sent.
You can select to save draft messages to On My Mac. You won't have access to your drafts on other devices with this option, but no more doubt over a left over message in drafts.
Gmail is not standard IMAP. Getting the settings correct is difficult. You need to log into your browser to make some of the selections.
Trash/delete are not the same thing. Trash really trashes where delete actually removes the label and moves the message to All Mail.
To make matters even more confusing, the setup for Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook for Mac are different. For example, the settings for Sent mail.
When sending from Gmail’s server, your sent messages will be automatically copied to the [Gmail]/Sent folder. By default Outlook 2011 will set Sent to “Don’t store a copy of Sent Messages”, but Mail won't let me select this option.
Also confusing is setting Mail's folder for Sent, Drafts, Trash and Junk. If you see a [Gmail] folder list with folders, you need to select the folder to be used by Mail. Under Mailbox in the Menu bar, select Mailbox > Use this mailbox for
This article will help get you started with setting your Gmail account settings in your browser, but as I noted Mail and Outlook are not exactly alike. Connect Outlook for Mac 2011 to Gmail’s IMAP service http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/connect-outlook-for-mac-2011-to-gmails-i map-service/
MailTab Pro for Gmail is on sale right now for 99¢. AirMail $1.99 is also very popular. Both on Mac App Store (MAS) and work great with Gmail.
    Hope this helps!
