Cannot copy pictures off of Shared library

I sometimes open iPhoto on my computer and connect to my wife's computer running iPhoto. I used to be able to then copy photos I want to my computer across the network. But now with iPhoto 11 I cannot copy files from the shared library. I can select the remote pictures but when I drag them over my library the cursor does not change to show that the files can be copied.

The external drive is read only - by the looks of it.
Perhaps it is Windows formated with NTFS partition.
If it is empty you need to reformat it for Mac using Disck Utility in your Applications / Utilities.

  • Bug? Cannot copy pictures to album

I am having this problem in iPhoto 09: I cannot copy pictures to a new or existing album, but only in one circumstance.
    Try this:
    - Click on Library, Events
    - Double click any event in order to display all photos.
    - Select a photo but do not double click
    - Press Enter in order to view the picture for editing. Notice the ribbon above which displays thumbnails of all photos and the selected photo.
    - Use the left mouse button to drag the photo to any album.
    - The photo will NOT be copied to the album!
This ONLY happens when copying photos from this ribbon view, not when opening a picture by double clicking or dragging it without opening it. This WAS fine in iPhoto 08. I have tried this on two Macs with the same results.
Is this a bug? Do you have this as well?
See picture on http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3240/picture1pb1.png for the exact view (drag from thumbnail bar to album)

I can confirm that this happens +only when in Edit mode+.
It works exactly as it should in Organisation mode.
I'm not sure it's a bug. It strikes me as intentional. After all I can't drag anything to another Album (i.e Organise) when I'm in edit mode.
I don't recall this being a feature of iPhoto 08.

I believe you will find you can again sync Photos if you delete the "iPod Photo Cache", but predict that any subsequent attempt will fail.  In my case, the enxt sync removes all the photos again - I've seen other reports of error messages upon sync.  Mine just fails silently. :-)

  • Copying pictures from one iPhoto library to another

I would like to set up a new iPhoto library and copy some of my pictures in the main library to the new one.
Got the new library set up, and know how switch from one library to another ... so far so good. But I can't seem to bring pictures from my existing iPhoto library across to the new one.

Drag them to a folder in the Finder, switch libraries, and drag the folder into the open iPhoto window, or use the iPhoto Library Manager.

  • HELP! Cannot copy files off Time Capsule

I have a 1TB Time Capsule (DualBand) that I use like a NAS (network attached storage). Time Machine is disabled, but I manually copy files on the Time Capsule's disk when I want to back them up, and share them with other computers in my house.
I am trying to copy all of the files of the Time Capsule to a 2 TB Firewire 800 drive connected to my MacBook Pro, but I'm having a problem. About half-way through the the copy process (which is estimated to be an over-night ordeal) the Time Capsule is disconnected and I get the error:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data+
+in "" could not be read or written.+
    +(Error code -36)+
Also, the disconnected Time Capsule is still visible in the SHARED portion of my Finder's sidebar, but it is impossible to connect to the disk again, unless I unplug the Time Capsule and power it back up.
Every time I try the process, I receive the same error, and have to restart my Time Capsule again. Could someone please help me get my data off my Time Capsule? I would prefer not to have to resort to ripping it open, so I can put the drive into my USB Toaster.
NOTE: I've tried repairing disk permissions on my MBP and repairing disk on my 2TB external drive. I've found no way to do any of these kinds of things on the Time Capsule's internal disk.

I don't have a direct solution to your disconnection problem, but if your 2 TB drive has a USB port, you may be able to connect it to your Time Capsule and use the "Archive" function (in AirPort Utility's Disks/Disks panel) to copy that data from the Time Capsule disk.

Was your wife logged into the libray at the time you tried to log in? I have had a similar problem and it was because another user was logged into the library when I attempted to. I got the permission denied banner.

Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
    (1) You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
    (2) You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table once or twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. Repeat with the Virtual Mem column. If one process (not including "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

  • Help with iTunes Shared Library (Vista and OS X)

I am trying to share my Vista-based iTunes library with my new iMac. I have an issue now that iTunes does not let me select the shared iTunes library that resides on the PC. The following is how things are set up
    1) I've moved all of my PC-based music, my iTunes Library (.itl) file and the cover art to an external HD on my Vista PC.
    2) I've set permissions on all of the Vista files (music, library, art) to be read/write for available to all connected users.
    3) I have also mounted the PC-based external drive on my iMac. Permissions seem to be ok, as when I view files via the Finder, they are visable and accessible.
    4) However, when I try to open iTunes on iMac to change the shared library (using the OPTION key), the iTunes Library.itl file on the hard drive is completely greyed out. No matter how I change permissions or sharing on the Vista machine, I cannot seem to select the shared library.
    5) Interesting that I HAVE successfully accessed the same library through another Windows-based machine (Windows XP). In that instance I can access the network drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file no problem. Music streams fine after I do that. Also, from my iMac I am able to create files in the same directory where the iTunes files reside (using program like Text Editor) so it seems I do have write access and permissions to the directory.
Any clue why this is happening? It seems like iTunes is the one program that is not picking up the permissions from the iMac, but other Mac programs are. It's driving me a little nuts at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx

    Bump. Same issue. Help please.

  • IPhone 3GS: Cannot copy photos that where copied from a PC.

I cannot copy pictures from a folder that has pictures transferred from a computer. I've long since lost the pictures from the computer, and they are stuck on my iPhone. Is there any way I can copy them to the PC?

Try PhotoSync or similar app.  If you're computer has a wireless connection to your network it will wirelessly transfer the pictures to your computer (outside of iTunes).  I've transferred pictures not taken on my phone to a computer before so it should work for you.  (see http://www.photosync-app.com/photosync/en/home.html)

  • Shared library aggravation -- flags and drag/drop broken

I've got a MacBook Air.  My wife has a MacBook.  Both are running OS X 10.7.2 and iPhoto 9.2.1 (most recent update of iPhoto '11).  And shared photo libraries are driving us nuts.
My wife wanted to grab a few photos from my iPhoto library.  I figured this would be simple... enable sharing in the preferences, click the shared library in the source list, and "it just works."  Nope.  To be clear, I'm talking about libraries shared over a network, using the setting in iPhoto's preferences.  There are several oddities with the way shared libraries work that are just awful. I really hope I'm just doing something wrong.
    1.  Flagging.  iPhoto will let you flag photos in a shared library... but they don't appear in your flagged photos in the source list.  You can't create a smart album from them.  You can't create a album from them.  You can't create an event from them.  You can't search for them.  In fact, near as I figure, you can't really do anything at all with those flagged photos in the shared library, other than toggle the flag overlay.
So, iPhoto lets you flag photos in the normal way in a shared library, but doesn't collect those flagged photos in the normal way.  This is probably the worst possible scenario.  My wife happily flagged photos in a large albumn of mine for an hour.  Then, she couldn't understand why those photos weren't collected in the Flagged section of her library's source list.  She would have to go back through all 1,700 photos to find the ones she wanted again.  She. Was. ******.
    2.  Ratings. Same as above.  iPhoto will let you rate photos in a shared library, but that rating seems to affect only the rating overlay image.  Disconnect from the shared library, and your ratings disappear (so do your flags).
    3.  Drag/drop is broken.  You can drag/drop images from the shared library to the local library.  But you cannot drag/drop from the shared library to the desktop (or elsewhere in Finder).  This differs from the standard iPhoto behavior, where drag/drop from iPhoto to any folder works.
These things are problems.  They're problems because shared libraries look just like the local library.  When the user interacts with them, they should act like the local library.
Do shared libraries work similarly for others?  Are my wife and I just "lucky" here?  Or are these bugs in iPhoto?

Sorry, I was a bit ranty last night.
I'll ask a more specific question: do you see the same behavior when you connect to a shared library?  That is, can you toggle the flag overlay and set ratings, both of which appear to do nothing and do not persist after disconnecting?
Our iPhoto libraries are large (>10k photos each) and have been upgraded across multiple versions of iPhoto.  I'm wondering if there's something broken on our specific Macs, or if this is really an iPhoto bug.

You will want to open iPhoto, go to the iPhoto menu and select Preferences. Under the General tab, next to Connecting camera opens: select iPhoto. Close the preferences and quit iPhoto. Reconnect your iPhone 4. iPhoto should open automatically and offer to import your pictures. Import them and then do what you want with them.
    Best of luck.

Connect your phone back and resync except this time uncheck all the albums from itunes when you sync. This will take all the albums off your phone and clear up space on your phone.

    Hmm... that was labelled:
    As a Test:
    In bold and all
    Try repair the main Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT4527 The computer that has my i Tunes library has crashed, How do I turn off Home Sharing on this computer and tranfer my files to another computer?

How do i turn off home sharing and transfer my ITunes library to another computer?

Your music will only be where you put it.  You can download the itunes program and sign into your account on any computer, but your music/content will not be there unless you put it there.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.  File>Transfer Purchases
