Cannot login on boot, can login through chroot

I have an Arch install and when I boot I get a LightDM webkit greeter I set up. However, every time i try to log in, it says my pasword is incorrect.
The same happens when I use TTY2 and I cannot login as my user or as root.
However, when I log into my other arch system i have installed and chroot in, it works and I can su -l myuser to log in.
/etc/shadow contains entries for both accounts.
/etc/passwd has the shell as /bin/bash
When I try passwd root or passwd myuser it doesn't ask for my previous password, just the new one twice.
Does anybody know why this happens and how I can fix it?

That's normal if you are invoking passwd as root user.

Do as ewaller suggested and try to see if there is something interesting in the journal. However, are you sure that the keyboard layout that you use at login is the same you used when you set the password?

My problem is that using an Intel video card (with KMS) after latest Xorg 1.8 update, I can't see boot messagges and the login console anymore.
I've just noticed that after last Xorg update I can't access anymore to runlevel 3 on boot.
I've got an Intel video card so KMS is enabled by default (and mandatory).
I always used SLiM as a display manager, configured through /etc/inittab to go to runlevel 5 on boot:

To enable runlevel 3 at boot, I commented the id:5:initdefault: and the x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null lines and uncommented id:3:initdefault:.
Now, during boot, the last thing I see is Loading UDev modules..., then the screen becomes dark gray and I can't see any other boot messages (actually this appened also before, after xorg update).
The problem is that before slim started but now I can't see any login console.
I also figured out that typing my username, password and then startx, starts X normally, so the problem is just that I can't see the tty console anymore.
Once I am in X I can switch to ttys normally.
What can I do?
I just wanted to get rid of slim and start X automatically after console login but I can't see the console login!

Transaction SITSPMON/SMICM are not working in R/3 system as it is 46D.
We found that parameter u201Clogin/disable_multi_gui_loginu201D works with SAPgui logons.
System logons using the Internet Transaction Server (ITS) or Remote Function Call (RFC) are not affected by this Parameter u201Clogin/disable_multi_gui_loginu201D
I need similar parameter u201Clogin/disable_multi_gui_loginu201D for the ITS users.

If deleting opm.db file and Signing in , did not work , please follow below steps:
Open C:drive and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe.
Open Adobe folder and delete folders named Adobe Application Manager and OOBE.
Disable Anti-Virus and Firewall temporarily.

I changed SYS password and only a few people can login through it

A few weeks ago i decided to change the default password of SYS from the webbased OEM of Oracle 10g. Me and my collegues connected successfully using this new password (from different computers). However today i discovered that two developers which also use the SYS account, cannot access the database using SYS with this new password (nor the old one). The error message they are getting is Invalid username/password... (no they didn't forget the capslock on!)
The strange things are that:
1) They can connect through other usernames but not through SYS
2) the database is on the 192.168.4.x network, me and my collegues are on the 192.168.2.x network and the two developers and their team-mates are on the 192.168.14.x network.
Could this be a network related problem? I don't know ... When it was the default change_on_install password, everyone used to connect normally. I changed the password again, to a simple one to make really sure they are not typing it wrong, and yet, they got the same Invalid username/password error..
I have exhausted all my ideas. what am i missing? thanks...

In your case , I am almost sure that they pointing to another database. Check its network files in the Oracle Home.
From what tool thwy are try to log in ?

It sounds like you have a couple programs that started opening when you log in after upgrading to Mavericks, and you have already checked your user account login items. I had a couple of thoughts fo ryou to try out. First check to see if they had been moved to the Startup Items folder:
Some apps put items in the StartupItems folder, located in the Library folder. When you start your Mac, items placed in this folder open automatically.

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.

Lync login error use self account without delete cache , but can login with others account anyway

I deployed Lync Server 2010 for my customer. it's running well for about one year.
but there are some users cannot login on lync these days. we tested the issue, the following is the test details:
- only about 20% users cannot login on lync use themselves client computers.
- when I delete the lync cache files at C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator
folder, they can login on once. we must delete the folder next time when the user need login on.
- we can use other user account to login on at the above computer anyway, need not the delete the folder.
would you plese give me some advice about this case.

It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

Well, the GUI read/writes a lot of configuration files and otherfiles in your HOME directory, if it failes doing so the different services which makes the GUI fails to function and it will exit.
The users can probably login through the GUI even if they don't have a proper $HOME if they choose the Option->Session->Failsafe session.

802.1X cannot change expired password at login

Hi all,
I'm trying to roll out 802.1X authentication for wifi access at my company, however there's one major problem I can't for the life of me figure out. I'm not able to get the Macs to prompt for a password change when the password has expired at login.
On Windows when you log in it will prompt you to change your password when it's expired. However on OSX when you're on the workstation login screen, you can see the wireless icon briefly connect, then it will think for a bit and the user cannot log in at all.
OSX can definitely can change expired passwords via 802.1X, as if I log into a local account and connect to the wifi with the user whose password has expired, it will prompt to change it, and changes it successfully.
I'm using NPS for RADIUS authentication against AD, and using Profile Manager in OSX Server to create the 802.1X profile.
Does anyone have any experience with OSX and using WPA Enterprise/802.1X Profiles?

Sometimes, the third party credential provider would lead to some issue like this, I suggest you check the
current credential provider via the following path:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\SessionData\x\LastLoggedOnProvider
You should compare the result with the values in the following path:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\credential providers
If the current value is third party credential provider, try to disable it:
To disable the provider add a REG_DWORD value "Disabled"=1 to that provider’s CLSID subkey.
The provider will be disabled on the next session creation (sessions are created when you log off, switch users, or reboot.

Solaris Appears to Hang on Boot - No Login Prompt/X Doesn't Start

Hi,
I've using Solaris for just a few days, and I'm starting to get somewhere with it, but I've hit a problem I'm not sure how to resolve.
The system appears to boot normally up to the point of the prompt "Wait for the login screen before attempting login".
I used to be able to produce a Login prompt during this message, then X would start, but since I installed OSS, it just sits there, not responding. X seems to fail to start, but no messages are displayed.
What do I need to do exactly in order to stop OSS loading? I think this is the cause of the fault.
OSS is up to date, but Solaris 10 is a clean install (2008.05).
I'm going to need a step-by-step to fix this. I don't even know how to invoke a console based text editor right now - I've been using gedit from X.

Have just experienced the same thing - exactly - on SXCE snv_103 (11/08)! In the past, in debugging X server issues, we could boot to safe mode and edit pertinent files from there...
NOW, we're getting no login screen at all, and can't use the keyboard to 'stop' the xserver from running, as it apparently isn't! Did you find a fix for this? Lou
