Cannot Restart System

Hi,
I have a serious problem with my 2009 MacBook Pro. It has a start-up problem. For a month or so I’ve been having weird problems with the system since I practically, simultaneously, updated OSX 6 to 6.5, iTunes to 10.0, and my 3G iPhone to OSi 4.1. Now to the specific problem and what I’ve unsuccessfully done about it. It started with my usual multi-tasking habit of running 5 or 6 applications at once and rapidly switching between them to get my work done. Usually it’s not a problem with the 2.37 processor, but every now and again I manage to freeze the system, then I restart and everything is ok. This time though, the grey start-up screen with the apple and the spinning wheel just kept going and going forever. This is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this and then decided to work down the list of things to do from the easiest to last resort procedures. First was just to shut it off and try again, nothing. Next was resetting the PRAM (command-option-P-R), nothing. Then, with the computer off, (shift-control-option) + power button, with the same result, no start-up. At this point I tried safe mode (shift-power) and it asked me to set-up and new user account, which I did, then entered it and it didn’t recognize the account so I when back and restarted, nothing. So now I’m getting desperate and realized that I had just backed up 90% of my important stuff to two FTL servers and decided to use the start-up disk to install OSX after whipping the hard drive, but before I did that I had disk utilities repair the drive, but still it would not start-up so I whipped the drive, installed the operating system successfully, and then it asked me to re-start. Guess what happened? Nothing happened and the gray screen and wheel just kept going and going. Of course this happened one year and one month after I buy it so I have to pay for Apple phone support, but I requested an exception because I’m sure it had to do with the updates I installed. Prior to the updates being installed, I probably successfully restarted this MacBook at least 300 times without a problem. Anyway the start-up problem happened one month after I installed the updates so they said the problem had to occur immediately after the updates were installed to get the exception to the $50.00/call fee. I should have lied, but I always tell the truth. That’s just the way I am.
Help. I need help with this because I have the feeling someone out there has had a similar problem and has fixed it. My hardware is ok according to the hardware check from the applications disk. I’m sorry this was so much to read, but I wanted to give details about what I did. If you can help me it would make my year and you would make one Mac user very, very happy.
Thanks,
Michael

Disk space is cheap. See my FAQ* on freeing up disk space:
http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
If you free up enough space, and issues persist, and you can repair permissions but not reboot, make sure also you have no old memory resident programs in your Startup Items in the System Preferences. Once you are backed up*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then see if you can force restart the machine with the power button held down at least 10 seconds and let go.
If that forces it, then start it with the shift key and see if it can restart in safe mode.
If it can restart in safe mode some startup item or driver installed is not compatible with your current system.

    Could this be a virus?

  • Satelite T130 cannot restart (reboot)

I have Satelite T130-10G PST3AE bios v2.7 and it cannot restart.
After restart the screen blanks the fan makes becames noisy for short time and that is all.
To start it again it is necessary to switch it off and on. It starts normaly.
Restarts were attempted from Win7, Fedora Linux, Bios setup (when saved), ctrl-alt-del before operating system start (boot menu). The result was always as was described.
    Thank you for any hint.

I think it is hardware related issue since this issue seems to appear using all the different systems (windows, linux)
But did you already try the new OS installation? If not do that!
Back to the idea where the hardware could malfunction:
In my opinion firstly the RAM modules should be tested and checked. Since the RAM modules could cause such or similar issues, I think this is a good idea to check this part.
The best would be the usage of new, good tested modules.
But if motherboard is affected, the new modules would not be helpful very much :(

  • Satellite L855-149 - "no booting device. Please restart system"

    Hello!
Recently I have been getting an error on my computer; driver iqle not less or equal. This errors was happening maybe once ever 2 weeks. Yesterday however it started to happen every hour then the second it restarted from the last it crashed again.
Eventually windows did not start correctly and it came up with a recovery menu. I tried everything except the hard drive wipe as it has stuff I need. After a restore of the system everything worked but then it crashed again. This time when I started it it went to a black screen and then white letters reading checking media, checking media[fail] and then No booting device. Please restart system.
I looked it up but every video and post is a different error like no bootable device found. Insert disk and press any key. So now, before I lug it to PC world and get ripped of 200 to get told they could not fix it, I come to you guys. Please help me! Your my only hope! (A* for that Star Wars reference lol)
I will attach some photos to help you!! Thanks!

    Hi
Generally speaking the error Media Check Fail appears always if the BIOS cannot find the bootable device.
In my opinion different basic scenarios are possible:
First of all its possible that your HDD died and therefore notebook cannot find the system
But this looks strange to because in case of HDD problems, the BIOS would switch to another bootable device like ODD or LAN.
Therefore a general motherboard problem (for example faulty controller??) could be also possible.
To be honest, its always difficult to provide right and final diagnosis without checking the hardware first.
Anyway, in my personal opinion you should check if new HDD and new OS installation would solve your problem.
Of course you could try to boot the notebook using an bootable LiveCD disk just to check if you could boot the notebook without an new OS installation.

  • Satellite Pro C50-A-1MM - "no bootable device Please restart system"

Laptop had some 'important Microsoft upgrades' yesterday which I tried to install. Laptop died and when I started it up again, said 'checking pc diagnostics'.
It has advised I am getting an 'automatic fix' for last 12 hours. now stating ' no bootable device- pleasecrestart system. I am not very computer literate so looking for some advice on what has happened and how and what I need to do now?
    Thanks

The message no bootable device - please restarts system means that no system (Windows) has been found on the HDD and therefore the notebook does not boot up.
There are different reasons for that. First of all this may occur in case of HDD malfunction. For example if the HDD is fault and does not appear in BIOS. Therefore as recommended by Dr.Lamp, check if the HDD is viable in the BIOS (first BIOS page).
If the HDD appears in BIOS, well, then there might be a problem with the system partition.
It could be possible that the system partition has been muddled up and therefore the system cannot be found.
In this case the easiest solution would be a new OS installation.
Do you have a recovery disk?
If yes, take it an reinstall the system but note: this would format the HDD and of course, all the personal data will be lost.

  • "No Bootable Device -- Please Restart system" Satellite Click 2 L35W-B3204

Hi, So I recently reset the hard drive for my Toshiba Satellite Click 2 L35W-B3204, and after it deleted all of the files, I am unable to restart the system. I keep receiving the "No bootable Device- Please restart system" pop-up, and I have absolutely no idea on how to fix this problem. I have visited a few forums, and I'm not sure which solution would be best for me. Also, I do not have any of the items that the computer came with.  Please help.

cwmccrayI cannot get the bios to recognize drive. I have Ultimate Boot CD and I can get the linux system to boot. But no hard drive. I have slaved the HD in window 7 and it assigns a drive letter. I am certain it is a partition issue..--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can boot into linux so processor , board, and memory appear to be functioning. make sure the bios is set to the defaults, check the hard drive connection as Peter suggested as well as the connection from the board to the hard drive connector. Sometimes a hard drive can be seen on another computer and still be bad, we often suggest that people slave the drive as you worded it to recover data from a failing or failed hard drive.I would try another hard drive, even put one in from another laptop just to verify if it is a hard drive or board connection problem.

  • Yoga 13 SDXC Card Shutsdown Computer and it cannot restart with card installed

    Hi,
I have read on the forum that people are using the SDXC cards with their Yoga 13's.
I have purchased a Sandisk 64Gb SDXC ExtremePro card but when I put it into the Card Reader a blue screen comes up saying " Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart." It also gives and error with this message saying: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (TosExt.Sys). It cannot restart again until I remove the card, the same thing happens in SAFE MODE also or if I try to start the computer with the card inserted already. The card is brand new and I bought it in a reputable shop. I have tested the card in a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and it works fine. I have also tried to insert a different standard SD card into the Yoga but the same thing happens. I have reinstalled the driver for the reader but the problem still remains. The OS is Windows 8 64 bit. The card is in ex FAT format and I re-formatted it again just to be safe but still no luck.
I was not able to find anything regarding this online but saw that some people here have similar problems.
I would really appreciate if someone could help or at least let me know if there is a way of contacting Lenovo about this problem, I see that they will only accept emails regarding the ThinkPad product line.
Thank you in advance and best regards to all!

I have also problems while inserting a sdcard but not on a Lenovo. I just give here what I observed but I have no direct solution
    1. I bought last year a Samsung chronos and it was impossible to put a sd card. Each time I get the blue screen with the message page_fault_in_non_paged_area (tosExt.sys). When I contacted Samsung they of course do not understand and suggest that I reinitilize completely the computer which I did. At this moment it was possible to insert a sd card without problem but as soon as I have installed my usual sotfwares it came back to the same situation : impossible to put a sd card.
    2. I bought meanwhile a second computer, an Asus Zen book, and got exactly the same problem. Both computer are operated under windows 8 but the upgrade 8.1 does not change anything.
    3. the only way I can read a sd card in both these computers is to use a USB adaptor. In this case there is no problem.
    4. I recently bought a Yoga pro 2 from Lenovo. Surprinsingly with the same kind of sofware installed, I can use directly a sd card.
This seems to be a tricky problem

  • Windows 8.1: no bootable device--please restart system

I know that there have been several posts like this before, but none that exactly fit my situation.
So I have a satellite c875-S7303 that was running windows 8.1.  Today when I went to turn it on I got the message:
    Checking media [fail]
then: No bootable device --please restart system
I am able to access the setup utility, and I have tried changing the boot mode from UEFI to CSM with no luck.  I also dont feel like it is a physical problem with my HDD or the cables because the make and model of the HDD shows up in the main and boot tabs of the sutup utility.
Of course I didnt make a recovery disk, and there isnt a recovery option (that I'm aware of) anywhere in the setup utility.
I feel like the problem is that the boot files are corrupted somehow but the HDD is otherwise ok.  Is it possible to boot windows 8.1 with a generic boot file that I can burn to a CD or put on a USB stick?
Any help would be extremely appreciated

I'm planning to get hard drive usb adapter cables to see if I can get any of my data off of it.
I don't have any ideas better than that.
You may need to take ownership of files and folders, BTW, when you access from another Windows installation.

Assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to book up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

my iphone 5 cannot restart in itunes or by the power charger.  The apple icon keeps flashing

Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
    - Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear.  (For iOS 6 older, hold down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)
    - Relaunch the App and try again.
    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • Azure cannot restart after chkdsk

Azure cannot restart after chkdsk...Please let us know how to get it running again. Thanks.

    Hi,
From your query I understand that there is an issue related to the VHD file of the Virtual Machine.
To narrow down on the issue, Firstly, You might want to add this disk as a Data Disk and run chkdsk on it. In order to establish the same, please refer to the below steps
Delete the Virtual Machine by retaining the associated disks
    Save the Attached Disks
Go to any other VM in running state /  Create a new VM and attach the Data Disk
To attach an Existing Data Disk, please follow the link below
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/storage-windows-attach-disk/#attachexisting
Once the Disk has been added, run chkdsk on that particular disk and update us about the outcome.
    Hope this helps !

  • Runtime Error "Cannot find system in table file"

    I need assistance!
I have a Blackberry Curve 8310 and have recently installed Version 4.5
I am trying to setup my synchronization.  I have followed the steps to setup my calendar to Outlook 2007.  It tells me Congratulations! You have successfully configured the product. However, when I press Finish, I get a Runtime Error "Cannot find system in table file"
I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled it - the same error appears.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    FIGURED IT OUT!!!
The following steps, which are posted on the RIM Support will work; however, I had to do it a different way.  In Step 1, it states that the ilxolkCompanion.fil is located in C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector path...however, when I searched for this file, it was actually located in C:\Program Files\Blackberry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector.  (This could be because I upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.5 w/o completing a clean uninstall...not too sure why)
Once I located the file through the command prompt, I unregistered as per the instructions in Step 1.  I then followed step 2 exactly word for word...and VOILA!!!  I now have Version 4.5 working with MS Outlook 2007
ResolutionIf the Connectors folder is still present in C\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector, follow these steps:
Unregister the old Microsoft Outlook connector ilxolkCompanion.fil.
    Open the command prompt.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector.
    Type in the command regsvr32 -u ilxolkCompanion.fil.
In Desktop Manager, Microsoft Outlook will no longer be listed as an available desktop application.
Register the most current Microsoft Outlook connector.
    Navigate to C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\MS Outlook Connector.
Type in the command regsvr32 msoutlookconnector.fil.
In Desktop Manager, Microsoft Outlook will now be registered as an available desktop application.
Once these steps have been completed, configure synchronization again.
