Cannot restore or clone databases in SMSQL

I need to clone a database from several days ago to compare some data.  My problem is that none of the databases are available in the restore tree on SnapManager for SQL.  All the backups and transaction logs say that they've competed successfully but the restore pane is simply blank.  Running the clone or restore wizard fails to list any of the backed up databases. I'm running SMSQL 7.2.0.2184 with snapdrive 7.1 on windows 2012 R2.

I think I've got a bigger problem here.  Looking at snap drive, each of the LUNs that I map to, SQL_DB, SQL_Logs, SQL_Sys, and SQL_SnapInfo are mapped three times each.  I cannot figure out why this occurred. After hours I stopped SQL services and forced a disconnection of each lun, which one disconnect disconnected all three mappings.  I then re-mapped the luns, one-by-one then rebooted the server and SQL came up just fine, but again each LUN was mapped three times. Every attempt at backups now result in the error: "Snapdrive was unable to create a snapshot copy of one or more luns that reside on different system volums.  All snapshot copies that were created as part of this lun snapshot copy were deleted.  The check the application event log.  SnapDrive error code 0xc00402c2.  Why are luns mapped three times each?  I cannot find anything unusual.  Why did my backups break? Getting worried because now I cannot backup or restore production databases. UPDATE: The backups are now working.  Basically I had it the limit of snapshots on my volumes.  After cleaning up old snapshots, the backups are working again, but still I'm not able to do restores.  I have a case open with NetApp on this issue.

    Hello,
    You're attempting to restore a database that was backed up on SQL Server 2000, directly to a SQL Server 2012 instance. This is not supported.
    You'll first need to restore the database backup to a 2005/2008/2008R2 instance, take a new backup, and restore that new backup to 2012. SQL Server 2000 is too old to do a direct migration to 2012.

  • Steps to clone database in other server with restore daily

    Hi,
    I think i know what is the steps but need a guru that give me the ok.
    I have been asked to perform a clone database (11.2.0.3 with ASM) in another server. The original database (call PROD) has full backup everyday that it automatically (with crontab and a script i guess) restore the second database. The problem i see its that the original database is a RAC (2 nodes) but the second database is standalone (call TEST)
    I think the steps are:
    1) create a standalone database in second server with same number of diskgroups and same directories
    2) copy full backup to TEST server.
    3) duplicate with rman:
    connect auxiliary sys/password@TEST
    connect target /
    startup auxiliary nomount;
    run {
    allocate auxiliary channel ch1 type disk;
    duplicate target database to 'TEST' nofilenamecheck;
    release channel ch1;
    4) copy PFILE from PROD and modify (like standalone database) at TEST
    5) startup nomount; --test database
    6) restore controlfile from '< backup piece name of controlfile auto backup copied in step 2>'; --at test database
    7) alter database mount; --test database
    8) recover, restore from full backup and open database-->
    run {
    allocate channel d1 device type disk format ' <path of the copied backup in step 2 >';
    set until sequence < sequence> thread < thread# >;
    restore database;
    recover database;
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    9) like its a backup that has 2 undo tablespaces, should i drop 1?:
    SQL> drop tablespace UNDOTBS2 including contents and datafiles;
    All this steps at first time, are they right?, to do it automatically in the script i should use 2) 5) 6) 7) 8)?
    -- like the databases names are different, should i have any problem when restore de controlfile? if yes, how to avoid it?
    Thanks in advance and sorry for the inconveniences

    restore the second database. The problem i see its that the original database is a RAC (2 nodes) but the second database is standalone (call TEST)
    That should not be an issue. Even with RAC there is still only a single database to duplicate.

    Edited by: Me_101 on 30-jul-2012 5:46Take a look at the DUPLICATE DATABASE command in rman. Key is to connect to the production db as target, duplicate databse as auxiliary
    connect catalog rman/cat@rmcat
    connect target sys/pswd@proddb
    connect auxiliary /
    run {
    duplicate target database to NEWDBSID;
    }                                        where NEWDBSID is the name of the new database
    Put together what you think is the correct procedure and give it a shot. If you have specific problems, bring them to the forum.

  • Help: Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer with different firmware

    I want to recover a complete image of a Windows 7 operating system I have backed up to my other server. But I am getting the error "Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer with different firmware. The System Image was created by a computer using BIOS and this computer is using EFI"
    The image was definitely taken from this machine - the firmware has not changed!
    What do I need to do to restore the image?
    Background Story ..
    I bought a new HP 255 laptop per-installed with Windows 7 without Operating Systems instal disks (I will NEVER be stupid enough to do that again!).
    I took a complete image of the systems, as suggested so that I was well backed up.
    However, my machine corrupted its operating systems with a few weeks. The boot recovery CD did not work (would not boot). So in desperation, and because time was short I went out and bought another, legitimate copy of Windows 7 DVD with a license key (So now I have 2, legitimate copies of the operating system!).
    I installed the new copy of Windows 7 - but it was dreadful, because many drivers were missing. Mostly the missing drivers were not available on the HP support site for this machine. ALso, boot up was increadibly slow compared to the original OS installation.
    So I created a new boot recovery disk from the new version of Windows, and tried to restore using that. New boot disk loads ok, I can find the old image on my network (after loading a few network drivers). But I won't instal the image - giving the above error message.
    I tried deleting the EFI partition from the disk (using GPARTED to reformat that partition). That killed the Windows 7 on the machine - but still gives the same error message when I try to re-image the machine.
    I have tried going into the BIOS settings .. HP 255 has a "Legacy Mode" - which I have enabled, but this makes no difference at all!
    I think that the kind of solutions I am looking for might be:
    1. There is a clever way of disabling EFI on my 255 so that it looks like a legacy BIOS machine, or
    2. This EFI this is wired into my new boot recovery disk - and there is a way of creating a boot recovery disk that does not use EFI
    This has taken me about 2 weeks so far,please help with any suggestions!

    Erico,
    I suspect that "MSDOS" is what the Gparted tool calls "MBR" for a partition table, as explained here:
    http://superuser.com/questions/700770/mbr-equals-msdos-for-gparted
    I think that you are suggesting I give up on trying to recover the image I have stored on my server and just to instal Windows 7 from my new copy. There are two problems with this.
    1. After having systematically downloaded all of the drivers from the HP 255 notebook support page, I am still seeing missing drivers listed. Install the AMD graphics softpaq driver first. It also contains the chipset drivers.
    2. The machine is taking a hugely long time to boot up, and seems much slower with this version. Maybe that is a product of using "EFI" rather than "bios" - I don't know.
    My assumption is that HP had some special set-up option with their version of Windows which makes the machine more performant. It does not seem to be a coincidence that the image they deliver the machine with is not quite compatible with a 'normal' Windows 7 instal.
    So my original question stands: How do I recover the image that I saved away (as per instructed) when I first bough the machine?
    You still have not said what you used to create the system image. What is the "image" file's extension?
    You are mistaken in your comparison. MSDOS is an operating sytem MBR is a partitioning scheme.  that is comparing apples to oranges.
    The article is making an oblique reference in that using GPARTED is more or less equated to using the diskpart utility at the command line. Everything done at the comand line is essentially  done by use of MSDOS commands. GPARTED does the same thing with LINUX commands via a graphical interface so you don't have to type in the commands in a  Linux console.
    Do you mean making a backup? a backup is not a clone which can be reproduced on different hardware. The SSD disk replacement does make the hardware differ from the original configuration.
    Follow the instaructions on the following tutorial to make your disk a GPT type before installing.

    I am crystal clear from the very begining ,you are misleading this thread to increase yours post and nothing else.
    OP is restoring only archive logs and for that it need all archive logs including the archive for the current redo log file. So for that we need "alter system archive log current;".
    Yours this illusion is abrupt and without any proof.As you think that before backing up "alter system archivelog current" will be helpful in restoring all the OP's below archived log.Its a fun...

  • "clone database creation in progress" hangs

    I am attempting to install Oracle 9i personal on an XP machine. When the install gets to "clone database creation in progress, it hangs. I cannot successfully stop that part of the install. I have to click the close button at the top right of the window to stop the install. I found the installActions.log in which I found the following:
    Unable to read C:\Oracle\Inventory/Contents/OracleHomesList.ser. Some inventory information may be lost.Unable to read C:\Oracle\Inventory/Contents/LibsList.ser. Some inventory information may be lost.
    The installer version is 2.0.1.6.0
    and
    # Not all the dependencies for the component Oracle Starter Database 9.0.1.0.1 are found. Missing Component oracle.rdbms.seeddb.compoltp 9.0.1.0.1.
    # Not all the dependencies for the component Oracle Starter Database 9.0.1.0.1 are found. Missing Component oracle.rdbms.seeddb.compdss 9.0.1.0.1.
    Does this tell me anything useful? Can anyone give any advice?

    Hi, I am new to the Oracle Database. I had recently installed Oracle 9i (9.2.0) on Redhat 9 a couple times and everytime the installation hung at the "clone database creation in progress (46%)" stage. I had also tried to install 9i with software only then use "dbca" to create database but still hung at the exact same stage. Installation of my 9i was from the hard-disk; my PC has 256MB of RAM but I gave 2GB of space to swap. I had a successful installation of Oracle 9i (9.2.0) on SuSe Enterprise 9 and the DB was running smoothly. Can anyone please give me some idea on how to resolve this problem? Your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Install hangs in "Clone Database Creation"

    I try to install Oracle 11g on my computer. The installation pass all the checks and completes installing the files, then go to "Oracle Database COnfiguration Assistant".
    In the "Database Configuration Assistant" dialog, it displays the progress bar to 46% and said "clone database creation in progress", and then the whole progress hangs for 8 hours without any changes. So I think the installer is dead.
    I shutdown the installer and computer. Then restart. Then stop all the Oracle services, then call the deinstall to deinstall everything, remove all the registry entries and installed files.
    I then restart computer and reinstall Oracle, but the installation hangs on the same progress again. I repeat this for several times. But always cannot complete the installation.
    I think maybe there are some problems in cloning the database, so I check the log file, which is appended in this article. One problem is that the creating time of the log is about 8 am, but when I wait to 16 pm, the progress is still hangs and the creating/updating time of the log file is still 8 am, means Oracle does not update for about 8 hours.

    you are entitled to your opinion, regardless of how misguided it may be.
    You don't have to convince me, about your reality.
    If you want Oracle to install correctly, you need to make sure that NO errors get thrown.
    Only you can fix what is wrong on your system.

  • Oracle 11g Install hangs when "creating clon database"

    hi, i'm new with all this stuff, i'm trying to install oracle 11g on a windows 2003 standard edition and the installation hangs in this point:
    http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1458/installni7.jpg
    it's almost an hour and it's stuck in 45% when trying to create clon database in "Creating and starting oracle instance".
    I checked the log file but it says nothing weird, just that everything went well and a "restore" was made.
    what can i do?
    thanks!!!

    If someone still needs an answer to this:
    I had a similar problem with 10g. If you use certain special characters in the password for the database during its creation, some script will hang forever at 45% of the database creation. Just use a plain password without special characters. At the end of the database creation you can change all passwords. At that stage you can use special characters without any problem.
    I don't know if this is the same in 11g, but it sounds very similar.

  • Cannot restore backup to LocalDb

    I am having problem restoring a SQL Server 2013 database backup to a LocalDb instance.  Here's what I do:
    Create a full backup of the database, overwriting all existing backup sets (I simply use the backup GUI for this), on the production server
    Copy the backup file from the production server to my local development system
    Create a new LocalDb instance, share it, and start it
    Connect to the LocalDb instance using SQL Server Management Studio,
    Attempt to restore the database using the restore GUI, explicitly defining the location of the data and log files and selecting WITH REPLACE and RESTORE RECOVERY.
    The database restore operation starts and after a little while fails with the error:
    The logical daabase file '<logical log file>' cannot be found. Specify the full path for the file.
    I've looked at the file list in the backup and everything appears to be in order.
    I've viewed other threads that describe this problem and while some have work-arounds none of them have real answers.
    After a bit of investigation I have discovered that the data and log files for the original database were stored in different folders.  On a hunch I tested this out.  I created two databases, one whose data and log files were in the same folder
    and another where they were not.  I then attempted to restored these two databases in the LocalDb instance.  The database whose files were together restored just fine, but the database whose files were not together failed with same error.
    We use backups of our production databases in our build system in conjunction with SSDT to produce delta scripts than can then be run against the production database to update / upgrade it.

    Hello Tyrius,
    The issue is because the LocalDB does not have default data or default log registry key and the backup/restore fails due to that.
    Workaround:
    To restore such backups on a SQL express edition of
    SQL Server 2012, change the path of the mdf and ldf to the same location and then backup the database and then restore it on the Localdb instance.

  • 10g: Clone database with DBCA silent option

    Hello community,
    I have tried now for several times to make a clone of my existing database with DBCA and "-silent" option. I could improve my progress in cloning but now I always stick in the following error:
    But first, what I have done so far:
    1. Created a clone template of my Database with command:
    dbca -silent -createCloneTemplate -sourceSID DBORIGIN -templateName myTest.dbc -datafileJarLocation /tmp/oratest
    2. Create the clone-database by using the template from (1.) with command:
    dbca -silent -createDatabase -templateName myTest.dbc -cloneTemplate -gdbname DBCLONE -sid DBCLONE -datafileJarLocation /tmp/oratest -datafileDestination /oradata -responseFile NO_VALUE -characterset AL32UTF8
    Then the progress of execution is shown, it ends with a link to a log file. In this log file I can see the following contents:

    I have no idea where the "<OMF_CONTROL_0>" comes from. It is nowhere included in my myTest.dbc-file. In my eyes, it looks like that DBCA tries to create the file exactly with this filename - and this fails on Solaris, sure...
    Here is, what I have in my template file "myTest.dbc" regarding the control files:
    =======================
    <ControlfileAttributes id="Controlfile">
    <maxDatafiles>100</maxDatafiles>

    </ControlfileAttributes>
    ====================================
    To be honest, it is the first time that i try to use the DBCA with all these "special" options, especially the silent mode.
    Does anyone have an idea what is going wrong in my case described here? What do I or could I change to come to a success clone?
    Maybe, you can tell me where I can find some kind of "how to" for creating a clone using the silent-option.
    Thanks a lot in advance for helping a newbie! ;-)

    Hello,
    finally I was successful in installing the clone of my DB. :-)
    You remember that I had problems with the control files and these looked very strange:
    control_files=("/oradata/DBCLONE/<OMF_CONTROL_0>","/oradata/DBCLONE/<OMF_CONTROL_1>")
    The hint to check the permission in "/oradata" was a good one. The permissions were right all the time, but Oracle's DBCA was not able to create the sub-directory "DBCLONE". When I created it manually before installing the clone, the installation worked fine!
    I'm still wondering about this because all other subdirectories were created automatically during running "dbca" (e.g. all subdirectories "DBCLONE" needed below the $ORACLE_BASE/admin/-directory like adump,bdump and so on...).
    And i'm wondering about the names of the control files:
    I expected that these strange OMF-names would be replaced by a "normal" file name. But "dbca" was able to create the files exactly with the names "<OMF_CONTROL_0>" and "<OMF_CONTROL_0>"...
    As I had understood so far from OMF-concept, isn't the idea that Oracle takes care of file-naming instead of myself? I mean it can't be that I have to enter the template for DBCA and manually enter the control files names...
    I'm still close to the thought that it be a bug that isn't documented until now. Maybe, when I have some time left I will open a service request at metalink.
    If you are interested in this I will keep you informed on this topic. The other way round I stay interested in your opions and hints for using "dbca" to make and install a DB-clone.
    Thanks again for you effort to help me as a rookie in Oracle. :-)
    Regards
    FireFighter

  • RMAN backups valid for clone database.

    Hi,
    If we clone the database using rman that clone database will be having different database id, incurnation number and new resetlogfiles.
    so here we can't use source database backup files. if we want to use that source database backup files to clone database what is the procedure to clone the database.
    please let me know.
    thank you very much...!

    thank you very much...!You can clone/refresh database as
    1) RMAN duplicate
    2) RMAN restore from backups(restore control + database)
    using source backup files:-
    3) Hot backup clone ( begin backup, copy files, end backup, create controlfile using trace)
    4) cold clone (shutdown database, copy datafiles, create controlfile)
    5) whole database export & import
