Cannot run xorg as non-root

I have a fresh install of Arch Linux that is working great except I cannot run xorg as my normal login, only root.
When I attempt to start X with either startxfce4 or startx, I get
xf68openconsole: cannot open virtual console 1 (permission denied)
XFCE is installed and works fine as root. I've done a lot of searching and I've found a lot of other people having this problem but none of their solutions have worked for me. I tried reinstalling xorg, checking my user permissions (I'm in the wheel group), and adding vt$XDG_VTNR to the end of my xserverrc file.
I haven't used arch in a long time (before systemd) and I feel like a rank newbie! Nothing I have read suggests any need for permissions changes when installing X so I don't know why it's not working out of the box. I feel like it must be an obvious answer but I need someone to slap me in the face with it, obviously.
Appreciate any help in advance-

Post your ~/.xinitrc and the exact command you use e.g. 'startx' or 'startx -- :1 vt$XDG_VTNR -keeptty' etc. Make sure e.g. 'startx' is not aliased to something.
Have you tried starting it from another tty? Do you run the stock linux console in the tty or e.g. tmux?
Post the output of
uname -a
What's your hardware and graphics drivers?
xinitrc here
I am using startxfce4:
[root@ninja-laptop /]# type startxfce4
startxfce4 is /usr/bin/startxfce4
I haven't made any changes to the console or tty so I'm assuming I'm running it in stock. I haven't tried starting from another tty.

  • Cannot run privoxy as non-root user

    Hi all,
    I am having some problems running privoxy as a non-root user.  I am not quite sure where to look as I simply get a return / exit status of 1.  I didn't see what that maps to on privoxy's site.  As an aside, privoxy works fine in my regular install, but in my USB thumbdrive install with AUFS overlay, that is where I am having issues.  It might be a filesystem permission issue, but I don't see anything with journalctl -xn or dmesg or privoxy's logs that tells me anything.
    Does anyone have any ideas what else to look for?
    Thanks,
    Walter

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply - AUFS is a filesystem (I am running ArchLinux off of an SD card where the rootfs is squashfs with an AUFS overlay).  I've had issues with it in the past which turned out to really be permission issues.  I had an issue before where CUPS was unable to print because of the permissions, but it fixed itself after an upgrade.
    I don't have any error messages to review to make solving the problem any easier.  The only thing I verified was I took the systemd unit file and ran the same command as root and privoxy and it worked under root, but failed under privoxy.

  • Cannot run tmux as non-root user.

    I'm not certain if this is the correct section for this.
    I have a cloud server that I recently created that doesn't have a swap partition.  I migrated the home directory for this user from another server to this new server.  The appropriate permissions are set.
    I attempted to strace this to look at the system calls for this when running it.
    strace -fs 4000 -o strace.txt tmux.
    I'm abridging some of this.  These are part of the last 50 lines.

    Hi Rafik,
    You don't mention what type of machine you are using, but if it is Microsoft Windows
    the OS has an annoying habit of displaying all but the first letter of the name
    in lower case letters, even if it was entered in upper case letters. Tuxedo is
    case sensitive in this respect - the easiest way to check is to right-click on
    "My Computer", select Properties, then select Computer Name. The Full computer
    name will show the correct case of the name as it was entered, and this is what
    you must use with Tuxedo.

    Now that you don't need it any more, when everI have this problem, I
    enter the
    output of the Tuxedo hostname command into this field. 99% of the time,
    this
    works. On some systems, tmloadcf wants to see the hostname by itself,
    on others
    it needs the fully qualified hostname (myhost.bea.com). On some systems,
    it has
    to be uppercase on others lower case but almost all the time hostname
    returns
    what tmloadcf needs.

  • Creating a package such that its postinstall script runs as a non-root user

    The pkgmap(4) man page I have (says "Last change: 30 Apr 1999"; from SUNWman 42.6,REV=6.1) says of the owner and group fields in a pkgmap entry line:
    "This field is not used for linked files or non-installable files. It is used optionally with a package information file. If used, it indicates with what [owner/group] an installation script will be executed."
    The pkgmap file I get after running pkgmk on my prototype file contains a line like
        1 i postinstall 292 23672 1166416139for the postinstall script. The man page quote above suggests that if I want the script to be run with user and group fred/staff (say), I can hand-edit this line to instead be
        1 i postinstall fred staff 292 23672 1166416139However, pkgadd doesn't like this, complaining and failing thus:
        pkgadd: ERROR: bad entry read in pkgmap
            pathname=postinstall
            problem=extra tokens on input line
        pkgadd: ERROR: unable to process pkgmapFurthermore, there doesn't seem to be anything I can put in my prototype file to get these fields into the generated pkgmap. The corresponding owner/group fields are syntax errors for a package information file in a prototype file.
    All this, and the wording in the Application Packaging Developer's Guide, suggest that the pkgmap man page is wrong and there isn't a way to specify a non-root user and group as which you want your package's install scripts to run.
    On the other hand, the pkgadd confirmation "This package contains scripts which will be executed with super-user permission during the process of installing this package. / Do you want to continue with the installation of <PCBBserv> [y,n,?]" suggests that there might be some way to make a package such that it contains scripts which will be executed with ordinary user permissions, and thus not warrant a confirmation.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    John

    tpolich wrote:One more quick question, is rc.local run the backround or say if I asked for input would the system boot hang?
    Yes, rc.local itself would hang, but if you background the process inside rc.local using the '&' symbol at the end of the command, then that command will be backgrounded and rc.local can continue.

  • Cannot start X11 as non-root user

    Yes I know, there are about a billion threads about this issue, but I'm afraid none of them have helped me so far.
    So, basically as root I can startx just fine. But when I try to startx as my user "hb", I see the Nvidia logo and it jumps back to the console. It doesn't display any real errors, apart from some font and keyboard stuff, which isn't fatal to starting the X server as far as I know. The Xorg.0.log doesn't display any errors at all. So I really don't have a clue what the problem is.
    I've installed Arch Linux just a week ago on this laptop and I didn't have any problems whatsoever, but I've tried to reinstall 3 times today and X11 keeps refusing to work...
    I've used nvidia-xconfig to configure xorg.conf and I followed the wiki instructions (which worked for me the last time). But considering X11 works for root, the config file should be okay, right?

    I don't have a window manager installed yet. Seemed rather pointless when X wasn't working yet. The .xinitrc is there, but doesn't exec anything. But in the previous install I installed xfce4 and had .xinitrc do "exec xfce4-session", and the result was the same as now: X starts then jumps back to console.

  • How do you run applications as NON root without any x (server) ?

    Hi! I'm trying to run mpd as a user right after init. According to the wiki one should use .xinitrc, but since there's no X server for me to run it won't work for me.
    I've tried this command in bashrc "( sleep 15 && mpd ~/.mpd/mpd.conf )" and yes it works assuming I ssh into my server.
    Where do you put script/commands to launch an application as a NORMAL user after init?
    My Setup:
    archlinux on a server, so no graphical input.
    Thanks

    dyscoria wrote:
    I don't use mpd, but you could try putting in /etc/rc.local which executes straight after daemons:

    Yeah I've already tried that also tried  (sleep 50 && mpd ~/.mpd/mpd.conf) &. But none of the commands executes to my knowledge, because it's been over 5 minutes now and mpd still hasn't started. Both commands works just fine if I enter em manually in the terminal.
    jac wrote:

    This  specifies  the  user that MPD will run as, if set.  MPD should never run as root,
    and you may use this option to make MPD change its user id after initialization.  Do
    not use this option if you start MPD as an unprivileged user.
    Edit: Sorry, can't get that to look normal any way I do it. Best to view it straight from the terimnal
    Hi! I understand what you mean, thanks.
    No,  I assumed it would run as root. But you see I can't launch mpd as a daemon in rc.d, it always fails for me. The easiest way for me is to "mpd my.config" in some ways.

  • Cannot Run Scans in non-admin account...

    So, mymain accounton my Mac is not an administrator for security reasons, which is not a concern normally.  When I need to install something or perform a fucntion that requires admin privileges, I am prompted for the account name and passwor.  However, when I try to run a scan in OSX,. I am merely told that I need to be an administrator, but there is no prompt.  Is there a way I can enable a prompt for admin credentials so I can run this scan with the proper permissions, other than making my account an admin or logging into the admin account separately? Many thanks in advance

    Did some research on this the other day, to see if i could get Software Update to run in the middle of the night like Windows can do.
    Software Update requires Root powers, so when you give it your Admin Password your opening a sudo window of 5 minutes for it to complete it's task.
    Software Update doesn't check for updates while in Standard User becuase Standard Users supposedly can't do anything about it anyway and it would be a obvious distraction. "Mommy the computer....!!!"
    Apple should have a option in Software update preferences to let certain Standard Users know a Software Update is ready just for the purpose your explaining. I run in Standard as well.
    I ran some Software Update commands via the Terminal for a launchd just to see what I could do.
    Apprantly one can DOWNLOAD updates automatically with launchd in Admin, but not install them because of the need for sudo.
    I just misssed a perfect opoortunity (todays update) to run a launchd to do automatic downloads of Software update, then see how to go about installing them afterwards. So fsck me, I'll have to wait now. (unless i use my other machine! ahhh!!)
    Anyway the program you want is this little gem: Lingon
    it's on Sourceforge (grab the image)
    Ok so that takes care of the Software update downloads (man softwareupdate in Terminal for commands)
    /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --download --all
    Will do the automatic downloads, now it's just a script away to let you know ( a nice pop up window) that you have something in your folder where the Software Update just downloaded into.
    That's the next question is where that is and how to run it.

  • Cmdtux 868 - tmloadcf cannot run on a non-master node

    Hi - Having installled tuxedo11gR1 on RH Linux - I am having problems loading a ubbconfig
    Trying to use the one from simpapp -
    After having change machine name to the one matching uname -n
    Also all existing ubbconfig files (from Tuxedo 6.5 on HPUX) gives the same problem.
    I have noticed that we do not have a lic.txt file under $TUXDIR/udataobj - is such a file still needed ?
    (and can the absence of a license file cause the cmdtux error ?)

    Hi,
    Well, I'm definitely puzzled. tmloadcf compares the name returned by the uname() function against the name listed in the *MACHINES section to see if you are running on the MASTER machine.  Can you write a simple little program that prints the results from the uname() function?  It would look something like this:
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <stdlib.h>
    #include <sys/utsname.h>
    int main(int argc, char** argv) {
        struct utsname thishost;
        if (uname(&thishost) < 0) {
            printf("Error getting uname\n");
        } else {
            printf("uname returned:'%s'\n",thishost.nodename);
        return (EXIT_SUCCESS);
    }This should tell you what your host thinks its name is. Also, you might want to look at the contents of the file:
    /etc/sysconfig/network
    That file may not match your DNS settings or /etc/hosts settings, and I believe it may be what uname uses on Redhat.

  • Pretty gtk2 as root, ugly as non-root? [/SOLVED]

    Heh, this is actually a little bit interesting. I've never ran anything that requires X as root until just a few minutes ago and realized that running applications such as pidgin and firefox as root, they are significantly prettier than what it looks like when I run it as non-root, even with the same gtk2 theme as you can see in the picture above. Oh, by the way, can you guys which one is my non-root and root running the above? The left is as non-root and the right is as root. See? A lot prettier... And I always questioned why Firefox was so damn ugly on Linux. It looks like it is suppose to as root.
    Anyhow, I am curious on either what my non-root account is lacking (I think it is lacking the ability to read certain files), how could I configure it to look like what it does on root, or so on whatever the deal is. To me, this is just crazy. Heh, I am not saying how it looks is totally important, I've always been a fan of usability which is why I use dwm and stuff, but this is just crazy to me, lol, crazy...
    Yeap.. So any ideas what I am doing wrong, missing, so on, lalala?
    Edit: Blah, I feel like a fool. I played around with it more and realized it was clearlooks on root. My bad my bad my bad. :\ Well, at least y'all know what theme I'll be using. 8D

  • Setting previleges to a non-root user account to access ports

    Hello ,
    I am tring to do an icmp-ping to a machine in the network from an application by connecting to icmp port through a raw socket.
    My question is i am able to connect to icmp port using raw socket only in root user account. But my application should run under a non root user account and do the ping for me.
    1)How do i set previleges to a particular user to access icmp port?
    I am running the application on solaris 9
    2)I read a paper on net saying ports from 0 to 1024 can only be accessed by a root user account?
    Why is this and what can be done for a non-root user account to access these ports.
    3) Is this possible in solaris 9.
    Thanks in Advance,
    cheers,
    pal

    There is only one solution: create a new Standard user account and set it as your auto login account, if you use that feature.
    Using what you describe is mostly a false sense of security. Were someone to hack into the computer they could hack into the standard account, so you would not wish to keep any sensitive data in that account. Other things to consider:
    Turn on your Firewall in Security & Privacy preference panel.
    Use software to mask your online presence such as ProxyCap 2.03, MacProxy, Proxifier, or Hotspot Shield.

  • Getting file descriptor counts as a non-root user

    I have a number of scripts running on Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 systems that currently run as root in order to read file descriptor counts from various processes. currently they do something like: ls /proc/$PID/fd | wc -l to get a count of file descriptors for a given process $PID.
    These scripts need to be migrated to run as a non-root user. This means that my method for obtaining file descriptors will only work if the script owner and process owner are the same - this is not always the case however.
    For Solaris 10, I can assign the privilege proc_owner to the script owner - this works fine.
    For Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
    Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?
    Thanks,
    Nick

    For Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
    Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an
    arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?As I'm sure you suspect there isn't a way to get around the all privileges
    or none arrangement in Solaris 8. One workaround option though is the
    recently announced Solaris 8 Migration Assistant 1.0 which allows you to
    run a Solaris 8 container on Solaris 10 SPARC systems. A good collection
    of the relevant links are here:
    http://blogs.sun.com/dp/entry/solaris_8_migration_assistant_1
    With this option your Solaris 10 script process with the proc_owner
    privilege could also be run against the processes in the Solaris 8
    container.
    Hope this helps.

    Being relatively new to linux, and very new to Arch - I have been doing everything as "root".  This has made it easier for me to set up everything, and learn how things work.  I think I need to make a normal user account now, and switch over to using that (instead of using root).  I installed Alsa, vmware, firefox, xine, xmms, RTCW, Enemy Territory, and lots of other packages - as "root".
    To run software as non-root, I think I might need to set up some "groups", like a "sound" group or maybe a "game" group, and give those groups access to the sound card.
    Should I re-install Arch?
    Should I re-install packages as my new user?
    Should I create groups for various tasks?
    Can I give my "normal" account superuser access? (like on Windows).
    I'm not sure what tasks are supposed to be done as root, and which as a user.  I expect everything to stop working once I start using my new account. :-(
    For example, I have two big (160GB) data drives that I want to freely read and write to, but I will have to set up some kind of permissions for that (/mnt/data1 and /mnt/data2).
    Well, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had any good tips.  I'll be trying to switch over tonight.
    thx!

    Hi whol.
    First, follow normnmiles suggestions, but ome of these are probably mysterious to you, I would suspect.
    1. Add a non-root user.  Use the 'useradd' command.  Type 'useradd --help' to get a list of the relevant options:
    [wcarus@blackadder]$ sudo useradd --help
    useradd: invalid option -- -
    Usage: useradd [-u uid [-o]] [-g group] [-G group,...]
                   [-d home] [-s shell] [-c comment] [-m [-k template]]
                   [-f inactive] [-e expire]
           useradd -D [-g group] [-b base] [-s shell]
                   [-f inactive] [-e expire]
    You'll probably do something like the following, as root:
    useradd -g users -d /home/your-name -s /bin/bash -m your-name
    passwd your-name
    2. Make appropriate changes to /etc/group.  I find that editing the /etc/group file is the easiest approach.  This must be done as root (or using 'sudo' (more below)).
    nano /etc/group
    You should probably set up the following:
    users::100:your-name
    audio::15:your-name
    and possibly the following, if you use slocate and have a distinct group for your cdrom burners:
    slocate:x:21:your-name
    cdrom::17:your-name
    IMPORTANT: The numbers (except for slocate) will have to be set to match your group file. Don't just copy my numbers blindly; make sure they are unique.  Some users take numbers above 100 for user-added groups (that aren't already added automatically by pacman installation).
    3. Add sudo, as root:
    pacman -S sudo
    visudo
    Note: visudo is run using vim, so you'll need to know a few vi commands.
    Insert the following line, if you want a really easy, but somewhat dangerous sudo setup:
    your-name     ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
    You'll then be able to run anything as your non-root user by prefixing it with sudo (and it won't ask for a password).  This is not particularly safe, but it's a bit better than running as root.
    If you want to use a password (which is asked only the first time or only after a long delay between uses of sudo):
    your-name     ALL=(ALL) ALL
    This really should is the preferred general setup.
    For example, you can now edit files that can normally only be accessed as root:
    sudo nano /etc/rc.conf
    sudo nano /etc/lilo.conf
    4. Log off root and log into your account.  Edit .xinitrc to load the appropriate graphical environment.
    nano .xinitrc
    To set up KDE, .xinitrc should look like:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    # exec wmaker
    exec startkde
    # exec icewm
    # exec blackbox
    # exec fluxbox
    Comment the graphical environments as appropriate to your setup.
    You should then be all set.
    Good luck,
    Win
