Cannot Upgrade MacBook OSX 10.6 to 10.9

I've looked through the forum, but haven't found a solid answer yet.
I went to upgrade my aging MacBook from Snow Leopard to Mavericks via the free upgrade available in the App Store. I got a message stating that my computer could not be upgraded.
I don't know what year my machine was made, but I don't understand why that would make a difference as long as the processing, memory and hard drive requirements are met. I have built and upgraded many Windows machines and the YEAR of manufacture of the motherboard or processor has never been a factor in upgrading to a newer operating system. Only the processor speed, amount of memory and hard drive space available would have any impact on the ability for an OS to perform correctly.
The only thing I can think of is that Apple, whether due to greed in forcing customers to purchase newer machines or other financial incentive, has placed such a limitation on the OS upgrade so that older machines cannot benefit from the new software technologies. I don't use this machine as part of my daily routine or for business, but I do like it for travelling due to its small size. It is also kind of a fun break from Windows and I like to keep up with other OS technologies such as OSX & Linux for my own self-edification and experience.
If there is some TRUE technical reason that the upgrade wont run on this machine and it isn't just financially or politically motivated by Apple, then could someone please explain to me (in technical, architectural detail) what the bottleneck happens to be? The year of manufacture and color of the casing just don't seem to be justifiable reasons to me based on my knowledge and experience (I have a Voodoo machine with a 10 year old mobo and processor that still outperforms several newer machines - although it is candy apple red!). Here are the specs of my MacBook as reported by "About this Mac":
Hardware Overview:
  Model Name: MacBook
  Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores: 2
  L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
  Bus Speed: 667 MHz
  Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
  SMC Version (system): 1.17f0
Serial Number (system): W8*******YA9
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
I don't see anything in there that indicates the year of manufacture, but I'm thinking 2006 or so. It is black.
It runs Snow Leopard and Office 2008 just fine and, albeit quite sluggish upon initial load, Vista Ultimate via Parallels. If there truly is no way to get this machine running Mavericks, I'd like to hear some user suggestions for other ways to improve performance on this machine until it finally dies (which it shows no signs of - a little warping of the battery case cover is all that appears wrong with it). I've read that this machine will not take more than the current 2GB of RAM, but some have said upgrading the HD to a solid state drive would give it quite a kick (assuming this model and OS version would accept one). I'm also quite concerned about the fact that Apple is not supporting Snow Leopard anymore. Does that mean that there will not be security updates? Am I putting my machine and home network at risk by continuing to use this machine?
Any and all answers/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks to those of you who took the time to read this and (objectively) respond.

When or if you upgrade the MacBook 2.1 to a later OSX past Snow Leopard 10.6.8, it will lose the ability to utilize older (available, affordable?) applications that may be on it, which shared code with the older build series of OS X and the supported computer series using PowerPC processors, as these use a utility inside pre-OS X 10.7.x by the name Rosetta. This allows older powerPC coded application to run in later Intel-based Macs.
Once the computer is upgraded past Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Rosetta won't function; it won't be available since support for that ceased with continued System integration to intel-based hardware, to remove unneeded code.
So if you have older applications running, you can tell in System Profiler what ones may be incapable of running in Lion 10.7.5 since those willl say PPC in the applications section. Some may say Universal, others Intel or x86.
With an older early MacBook, it's probably best to leave it with a good solid system such as Snow Leopard 10.6.8, given enough quality RAM and adequate unused hard drive capacity for it to function well. Then be on the lookout for good examples of later hardware that will support more recent OS X versions and applications. Avoid auctions or ebay; if you know someone well enough to also know when they are talking bad about their old slower Mac and want to 'recycle' it, those are key words indicating you could do an intervention to save the poor old Macs life. Especially if it still runs, and looks unscathed. Acquire vintage hard + software while it is available, for the day you may want to be an iFixit guide practitioner? A few items are more difficult.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Cannot upgrade to OSx Lion no Recovery

I purchased and tried to install the OSx Lion upgrade. My mac is running Mac OSx 10.6.8 and I have bootcamp with Windows 7
It seems that there is some sort of problem in upgrading the OS when bootcamp is installed, but I am not sure of which would be the solution. The error says :
Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more.
From an internet search I think that a possible solution would be to have an external hard drive and install OSx lion on it. However, the hard drive must be formatted and have at least 13 G free, so that I will have to purchase a new hard drive only for this task :-( . Before doing so, I'd ask to the community if anyone had experience with this issue and what is the solution. Any help will be greatly appreciate ^_^ Thanks!!!
As a side note I'd like to express my deep disappointment in my Mac, fueled by the frustration of being unable to do a simple task, such as upgrading the OS. This is really the last drop. I can honestly say that buying my macbook pro was a very big mistake :-(
Since I bought it, almost one year ago, I had only problems. The OS is slow and crashes very often. I lost countless hour of work due to crashes, and disk failures. Most of the software is either not compatible, or full of bugs, while I had to pay lots of money for any kind of upgrade/assistance. The upgrade to Osx lion is my latest desperate attempt to stabilize the OS. I can't honestly say that there is a single task which this mac can accomplish, beside browsing e-mails.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I will be happy to give more infos about my problem
For the triple boot: I am installing rEFIt. I dod not think that the problems with OSx Lion are related to this, as I took the decision to install Linux after failing to update the OSx
I would be glad if we can bring the topic back to ways to upgrade to OSx Lion while having bootcamp. Did anyone ever succeded in doing so? ^_^
    About the unstable OS:
I have about 3-4 fatal crashes per week. Sometimes the mac is unresponsive and I have to restart it manually, sometimes the screen goes black and the computer restarts itself.
From what I have noticed I'd say this happens either while I am using some application, or just by using an external hard driver.
About the application: I'd say I can divide the crashes based on percentage of occurrance as follows:
60% with Microsoft Power Point (I can't say if it's because of the program or just because I use it at least 70% of the time) 30% Programming( C++, Fortran or Matlab) 10% Latex (using TeX Shop). The crash is immediate and I am not saving or doing anything in particular. Just typing text.
About the external hard drivers: I had some serious crashes due just by plugging in removable hard drivers, or reading/writing on them. This accounts for about 50% of overall crashes. It is not the same hard drive: I had crashes with multiple sources and I think it's some serious issue with the OS. I take extra care in safely removing and ejecting before unplugging from any source. Probably an important comment: most of the flash drivers I have used are also used with Linux systems. I never had a problem in Linux or Windows.
    Thanks!!!!!

  • MacBook can't see my home wireless network after upgrade to OSX 10.8.5

After upgrading to OSX 10.8.5, my MacBook does not detect any wireless nertworks. My iPad and iPhone work fine, my router has been rebooted, WiFi is turned on, and the ethernet connection is how I am writing this message to you via broadband. There are a half dozen wireless networks in range (according to my iPhone) but the MacBook cannot find the router I am sitting next to. Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

It appears an SMC reset was required:
HT5815 I've just done the 10.8.5 update on my MacBook Pro end of 2008, and WiFi don't work after reboot... Impossible to activate it...
Here is your other post: MacBook can't see my home wireless network after upgrade to OSX 10.8.5
If you reply to it and marked it "solved", perhaps with a link to that post (copy and paste it, or just say you performed the SMC reset) it will help others find a solution. Thanks!

I have an early 2011 macbook pro 13" running 10.6.8, if i upgrade to osx mavericks 10.9.1 will I still be able to run powerpc applications?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the last Mac OS X version that supports PowerPC applications, so if you upgrade to OS X Mavericks, you will lose the ability to use PowerPC applications.
I recommend you to look for upgrades to those apps, but if you cannot or any of your apps are not available for Intel-based Macs, a different option you have is to create a second partition and install OS X Mavericks there, so you can still use your old apps by starting up into Snow Leopard. To create the partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html

    Hi,
PSC 1315 no longer supported for scanning since Mac OS X v10.5 or while using any newer OS, there is no scan software provided by either HP or Apple (Image Capture)
You may find this information stated below for Leopard, the same apply for any newer OS version:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01234231&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en &os=219&product=374568&sw_lang=
Image capture will not recognize your device as well, only print is supported as you may find listed for teh PSC 1310 Series below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP
Although there is no official scanning support for your device you may still try the 3rd party VueScan software which list your scanner as supported and compatible with Mountain Lion:

I just tried the link and it is just fine. If the GateKeeper pops up then open Security & Privacy preferences, click on the General tab, set the last radio button to Anywhere.

  • I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX6.8 and cannot upgrade. I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS

I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX6.8 and cannot upgrade. I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS6. Well, InDesign is the only one that works and I have a ton of work due! I don't have a serial number for Photoshop or Illustrator except for CS3, and they don't work. InDesign gave me no problems. Illustrator says it can't work on this machine. Photoshop needs a serial number. I'm stumped and getting anxious and freaked out. Can anyone help? Adobe Chat is down right now.

if you have a cc subscription, close ps > sign out and then back in to your cc desktop > open ps.
    ai cs6 requires:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 and v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems.*
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
    1024 x 768 display (1280 x 800 recommended) with 16-bit video card

Is this what you downloaded: iTunes 10.7?
When the update fails what if any error report do you get, specifically? Please do this before trying again:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

MY QUE IS, WILL IT BE FIXED IF I UPGRADE FROM OSX 10.8.5 TO MAVERICKS? What other options do I have? What can be an approximate cost for fixing this problem?

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

  • Just upgraded to OSX mavericks on macbook pro mid 2011 version. Having a big issue here that whenever my mac comes back from sleep, i.e after I open the lid, the screen flickers and there is an error of Finder not opening properly. Any fix to this?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

Webcam not working for Macbook Air 2013 after upgrading to OSX Mavericks? Yahoo/ Google/Skype cam chats not working. Facetime works though. Any updates of Mavericks released to fix this?

I have a MacBook Pro Retina display: 15.4-inch late 2015 with OS X Mavericks install, only on second week.
Insight works on FaceTime, Skype, but yahoo program does not show insight cam in dropped down.
Now when I got my new MacBook Pro, I down loaded all new Skype (worked tested), FaceTime (Worked Tested), Yahoo (not worked)
    Fix:
With the new Maverick you have to use there messager program Version 8.0 (4218). Once I add my yahoo account video works again.
It also supported AOL, AIM, Google Talk, Jabber.
Guess I miss it frist time... hope this helps...

In iTunes go File -> Library -> Organise Library -> Reorganise Library.
    Then quit and restart iPhoto.
