Canon Powershot s40 RAW support hack WORKS!

Kudos to Jason Pugsley for the following (Powershot G2 data, but it works just fine and dandy for the Powershot S40!!!)
<<< Following copied from Jason's thread on the Powershot G2>>>
This camera is a bit old but if you want to import images in RAW format you can try this hack. Hopefully Apple will have official support soon.
I started with the settings for the already-supported G3. Feel free to modify the values if you've got any idea what they're for...
Edit this file (make sure you save a backup first)
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fram ework/Versions/Current/Resources/Raw.plist
NOTE: You'll need to set RW permissions before editing and reset afterwards <<<<</div>

Also note,
Powershot S40 CRW's I'd archived within Aperture rendered almost immediately (as did .DNG's based on them). But the RAW adjustment fine tuning did not appear in the Inspector/HUD.
(My assumption on the above is that Aperture initially identified them as non-RAW vs. unsupported, and therefore set a flag somewhere saying that RAW adjustments were not valid).
There is another thread on this for the Nikon D80, so I followed its solution ....
Export the masters, delete masters, re-import the masters!
All works well!

  • IPhoto does not support Canon Powershot S45 RAW Format

    Hi,
It seems iPhoto does not support Canon Powershot S45 RAW file format. Can this be added to be supported!?
Does anyone know how to report this to Apple and request this as a feature enhancement?

  • Canon Powershot S100 RAW files with Elements 9

I have Photoshop Elements 9 and am trying to display and work with my RAW files that I've taken with my Canon Powershot S100 but it doesn't want to read the files... I've tried the lateset update from Adobe but that doesn't seem to work either... any ideas?

Use the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your RAW files to DNG, and open the DNG files in PSE9:

  • Canon Powershot G16 RAW files and CS5

I want to be able to work with Canon RAW files shot on my G16 but CS5 doesn't seem to support this. Is there a plug in? or do I need to purchase new/latest software? I really don't want to if I can help it - I have a budget and I'm quite happy with everything else about CS5.
    Nick

Photoshop uses an Adobe plugin called Camera Raw to read Raw files. Camera Raw must be updated every time a new camera comes on to the market and not all versions of Camera Raw are compatible with all versions of Photoshop.

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
The Canon Powershot G16 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 8.2 which is only compatible with CS6 and later.
To open Raw files from the G16 in Photoshop, your choices are to upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud.
Alternatively, you can download the free DNG converter from Adobe, convert all G16 Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in CS5

I tried making the edits to the plist file as suggested in this topic, and can confirm that these do allow RAW files from the Canon G2 camera to be imported into Aperture. However, I am finding that the resulting default conversion is a fair bit darker than what Adobe CS RAW plug in does. Colors are reasonably accurate, but quite a bit darker. I realize that I could make further adjustments to lighten up the shadow areas, but this will likely add more noise in the shadows than would result if the RAW conversion were to be a bit brighter up front.
Does anyone have ANY idea what all the numbers in the plist represent? And which ones could be tweeked to get a better conversion that preserves more of the shadow details?

  • Canon T2i / 550d raw support?

I just bought Aperture 3 to use with my new camera, and was disappointed to find out that there is no raw support. (I get "unsupported format" when I import the images either directly from the camera or from file)
Does anyone know if Apple is working on a raw support update for the T2i, and in what sort of timeframe I can expect it?

  • Canon Powershot S90, Places no longer working?

Hi, my wife and I recently went on a trip to Seattle and Alaska, and before we left we picked up a Canon Powershot S90. The pictures we were taking in Seattle were great, and the Places stuff in iPhoto was working great. Somewhere between one side of Seattle and the other, all the gps/Places info stopped being saved to the pictures, and we got no more Places information for the rest of the trip
    Can someone please help?

Sounds like a camera setting or hardware issue - not an iPhoto issue - suggest reading the manual for the camera and/or use the Canon support forum
iPhoto takes properly formed EXIT location data and displays it - the camera is the source of the information

  • Powershot G15 RAW support in LR 3.6 (Elements 10)

I have Elements 10 and LR 3.6 installed (I also have LR 4.3 but more on that later). I just purchased a Canon Powershot G15 and from what I've been able to determine RAW support for it was included in ACR 7. Am I correct in assuming I cannont use ACR 7 with my two programs?
I'm afraid to install LR 4.3 because of all the reported performance problems. My 3.6 runs like a champ. I'm using a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and intel i5 processor. So what do you think? Should I take the chance and go ahead and install 4.3 or leave well enough alone. I received 4.3 as a free upgrade so if I don't install it I'm really not out anything.

I have both 3.x and 4.x installed on my Windows 7 computer.  I don’t remember doing anything special, but you can always just install LR 3.x again if you decide to abandon LR 4.x.
Assuming you have LR3 currently configured to open the last-opened catalog each time you start it up, LR4 will find and ask permission to convert a copy of that LR3 catalog to LR4 format but your LR3 catalog will still be useable by LR3.  Anything you do with the LR4-converted copy won’t be reflected in the original LR3 catalog because they are two separate catalogs and LR3 cannot open the LR4 catalog.  When doing the initial conversion, name the new copy of the catalog something that makes sense for being the LR4 version of your LR3 catalog so you won’t be confused when you look at the catalog names in the future.

  • Iv'e upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8 and now microsoft office 2004 and my canon powershot camera software will not work. any suggestions?

I just upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8. Now my Microsoft office applications,(word, excel, ppt) and my camera software to transfer picts from my camera will not launch. (Separate apps but all stopped working as soon as I upgraded from 10.5.8). The software for the Canon Powershot is Ver.37.2. Image browser 6.2 EOS utility 1.1.  Any help would be appreciated.
Also if you could tell me what happens to the individual jpegs that get imported through iPhoto, I would go back to using that instead of the Canon software. I want to be able to go into a folder and see all the jpegs and not have to rely on iPhoto's one enormous file. What happens if that iPhoto file gets corrupt? Thanks, Leesha

Actually, Microsoft Office 2004 works fine with Snow Lepoard OS 10.6.x. However, it does require Rosetta, Apple's app for Classic apps. In your upgrade from Lepoard 10.5.8, Rosetta may not have installed but you can manually install it with the instructions here.
On another note, when upgrading the OS, some anomalies get resolved by repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
One more note, there was an issue with Rosetta crashing with OS 10.6.8 in February 2012. Apple released a security update that fixed it. You can see if Software Update (launch from the Apple menu) shows it or manually download Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 and install it. Software Update will also show other applicable apps available for updating for your upgraded system.
Rosetta is no longer available with OS 10.7 Lion and beyond. Then you will need to upgrade MS Office 2011 for Mac.

  • Canon powershot s110 power button not working

camera only turne on and off by inserting and removing the battery-power button does not work for intended use ? Canon powershot s110.

This sounds like the power button might be stuck in the on position. If the camera is new, this should be repaired under warranty. Has the camera been in any dusty environments lately? There may be some dirt by the power button that is preventing the proper operation of the power button. Has the camera been exposed to any dampness that might have shortened out the circuit board that has the power button on it? If so, that board/button combination would need to be replaced. I would have it checked out by an authorized Canon dealer to make sure of the exact problem and repair.
You could first try a reset of the camera in the menu options. You might get lucky.

  • RAW Plist settings for a Canon Powershot S40

I have a lot of RAW Canon .CRW's in iPhoto. I now use Aperture for my Canon EOS 20d, but would like to use Aperture for my old S40 digicam photos.
I tried editing RAW Plist by copying one of the sections (Canon s60). However, white highlights are blown out to fluorescent pink.
Any recommendation as to the correct RAW settings I should edit into RAW Plist?
    Thank you.

    Hi David,
I work with a Pentax *ist DS which also isn't supported (yet?) in the Raw.plist. I changed the existing entry from Pentax *ist D to Pentax *ist DS which allows Aperture to at least read the raw files... but the colours were not quite correct. However, there is a trick which partially alleviates the problem.
If you look closely at the Raw.plist, you'll find that there are one to several matrices for each model, called m1, m2, mc (and possibly others). Now, the values for at least the m2 matrix can be found in the open source "dcraw" (on which part of Aperture's raw developer appears to be based).
Thus, load the source of dcraw (look it up via google), and find the matrix appropriate for your camera in that code. The numbers given there need to be divided by 1000 (example: 10948 becomes 1.0948). Next, you need to replace the m2 matrix' values in the Raw.plist with those from dcraw, and you're set.
I haven't yet found with what to replace the m1 and mc matrix values. I guess that the various matrices are used by Aperture for various white points (d50, d65, etc) and help Aperture to get the colour of your photos right. However, with the method described above, you'll get rather accurate colour reproduction as long as your white balance settings were correct while you took your photo.
Other camera specific values in the Raw.plist seem to contain the settings for camera-specific noise reduction, sharpening, boost etc. - I don't know anything about these (yet).
Now if somebody could show how to determine the values for the m1 and mc matrices, that would be a great help.
    Kind regards,
    Karl

  • Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS3 do not recognise Canon PowerShot S90 raw files

My husband has lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS3 but they don't recognise CanonPowershot S90 camera raw files. I've tried searching for the problem on internet but can't find anything that helps. Adobe's DNG converter doesn't work either. I've tried different versions of the DNG converter to no avail. Buying a new Adobe product is out of the question.
Another problem is that his e-mail address has been changed so that he can't login to his Adobe account. We used to be able to contact Adobe Netherlands by phone or email but that option isn't available anymore.
    Can anyone help please?

    Go to here:
Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6
    or here:
Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6
for the final versions of LR3. Download and install the software. You do not need to remove your present installation first, LR will install over it and fix any faults that now exist.
Your husband can log onto his Adobe account with the old email address and when in the account can edit the address to the new one.

  • When will the Canon SX60HS get RAW support?

As above, camera has been out for a while now, and i still can't edit my RAW files. Is Adobe usually this slow with support?

This was discussed before in the time between iOS3 and iOS4. People inquiring to Apple to add Flash to the iPhone. One of the reasons why Apple will not is because of the flawed coding Jobs pointed out. Another is that it would hinder on battery life and performance.
Android phones had their battery life and performance drop several times more than with it not on the device. Despite Adobe attempting to improve it further with Flash Lite and CS5 and whatever other codec names they've come up with, it would still affect both.

  • Canon Powershot G1X RAW conversion

Altthough the G1X is not yet included in the Beta camera database, will it be included in the final Lightroom 4 release?

Unfortunately Adobe can't answer that now (by policy).  Just have to wait and see.

  • Canon Powershot SX1

    Hi!
I'd like to know if the Canon Powershot SX1 RAW format will be supported in ACR 5.4. At the moment, the SX1 is not listed among the supported cameras (Camera Raw 5.4 plug-in release candidate).
I'd pretty much like the update to support the SX1 because I hate using Canon's software for RAW conversion (not flexible, slow, etc.).
    Cheers,
    Aline
