Cant uninstall application installed from source with pacman.

I made and installed the songbird-nightly program. It couldnt import a library, thus, wasnt even worth fully testing, unless I was going to manually get it to read all of my songs-- which I will not do.
Now, to get this off my computer, I tried several things, and then determined that I must not be using the right package name, so I ran:
pacman -Q | grep songbird
and it returned :
songbird-nightly 20080720-1
thus, I did:
pacman -Rsc songbird-nightly-20080720-1
and it returned:
error: 'songbird-nightly-20080720-1': could not find or read package
So, how do I get this poo off my computer.
Ok, its not poo. I love mozilla and virtually every program they make, but right now, its poo.

Thanks though. Still learning the in's and out's of pacman. It's not exactly apt-get.
Don't hate pacman for being perfect.
If pacman is perfect, then how come it won't improve anymore?

How are we supposed to uninstall applications installed via the Exceptions Deployment tool?
At the time of writing this I can only see listed install as a supported workflow.
It would be a great help if we could have an uninstall workflow too.
Any suggestions on how to work round this also appreciated.

  • Is installing from AUR similar to install from source?

I wonder if installing applications from AUR is similar to installing from source? Recently I have a problem where Eclipse SWT embeded browser is broken and 1 solution is installing firefox from source. So I wonder if installing from AUR is similar as installing from source?
StackOverflow question about broken SWT Browser

You may also be interested in ABS.  ABS is the official build system for Arch.  Things supported by Developers go into Core and Extra, things supported by trusted users go into community.  To get the packages for the extra (which is where firefox lives), install and run (as root) abs.  Then the build stuff for firefox will live at /var/abs/extra/firefox
    ewaller@odin:/var/abs/extra/firefox 1021 %ls
    firefox.desktop firefox.install firefox-install-dir.patch libvpx.patch mozconfig PKGBUILD vendor.js
Looking at the PKGBUILD, that package does compile from source.  Copy the directory to a user directory, enter that directory, and you can build your own copy with makepkg.  You can then install the package with pacman -U
If you need to change something, change the files in your local copy.
This is not that tough, but it is most definitively not a project for a beginner.  The documentation you need is out there, you will need to do your research.

  • Cant uninstall or install firefox

I got a virus in firefox browser, i cleaned it with spybot search and destroy, now i cant do anything with firefox, i cant uninstall it to reinstall it, it wont let me do anything, what can i do?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • Building eveything from source with ABS

Hi. Im amazed with the ABS system. It´s aewsome, since I love to build all the software in my system from source, and compiling it and make it a binary package is just genious. But I have some questions, here they go:
1 - Im compiling everything using the ABS tree using makepkg -b, so it compiles and generates packages also for its dependencies and I edited makepkg.conf so all the generated packages go to a folder (i.e.  /packages) so I can install them later using pacman -U package. My question is: If I later install a given packages, that depends on another, will that package be automatically installed when it´s needed? And is there a way to automatically redo all the source compiling and package generation automatically upon a source update for the packages I previously generated (like syncing in pacman)?
2- Im trying to build my desktop from source the ABS way the cleanest way possible, without all that kde programs, just the core of its window manager, so I would like to know what sources to compile. I guess it would be something like xorg -> kde -> nvidia drivers -> compiz-fusion (not supported by ABS) . Any directions, guys? Thanks in advance.

Don't worry too much.  I suppose I was being mean given you are new here. It is just that help tends to be better when clustered in one place.
jacko wrote:I thought about doing this for myself at some point, there is a lot of things I just do not need that is compiled in by default which I could rid myself of but, is all the time worth it in the end? Would like to hear someone elses expertise on this issue.
Well, you could also add in more optimization for your specific processor.  But I honestly don't think you need this for every package.  Perhaps the kernel, glic and a couple of other often used and big packages, but in the end it is barely noticeable given Arch is fairly optimized by default and can make you system less stable.
The only real reason to recompile is to add/remove options.  If the option is easy to add and doesn't bloat the package. the devs will probably add it for you if you ask in the bug tracker anyway.  I think the only package I now recompile are mozilla ones because I want the branding.

    This http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_Helpers
If you look into PKGBUILDs you see the good old './configure && make install' but by using pacman you don't have to worry about dependencies and if you remove the installed app, it gets removed all the way, no garbage left behind.

  • Installation fails on Application Install DVD included with Macbook Pro

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum... please move/advise if there is a better one.
I'm restoring my Macbook Pro to the factory default settings using the supplied DVDs and the installation instructions provided on the OS X Install DVD.
The Application Install DVD fails about 2/3 of the way through the installation process. The error simply says Installation Failed in big, bold mocking letters.
I'm assuming the DVD is damaged... I don't know what else it could be considering it's a clean install and I have no problems installing the OS.
Apple is sending a new DVD, but my real question is this:
Is the DVD that comes with the Macbook Pro more or less the same as purchasing iLife? In other words, can I continue configuring my system, installing other applications, moving over backed up media, etc., and then install the Applications DVD when it arrives - or - is it best to install both the OS and Applications DVD on a clean system?

OK--and my bad for not answering the question you actually asked.
I checked my original system discs for my MBP, and did not find a separate iLife disc. So I would assume that the iLife applications would be on the disc that won't install, although I cannot be 100% certain of your situation since I am not sure exactly what Mac you have and how the software was originally shipped. I know my iBook had a separate iLife disc. The MBP system discs seem to be dual layer DVD's, so they would hold much more than the CD's that originally came with my iBook.
I think you would want to have the application installed and updated before transferring any files that depend on that application. For example, if you have a lot of photos, you would want to have iPhoto or some other photo application installed before moving your photography files. You can check in Finder to see what you have, and you can directly download some applications like iTunes. So you can probably transfer the files that you have the application for, and wait on any that will have to be installed from your DVD that is coming.
    Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • How to install multiple packages with pacman?

    Hi ,
I guess it's a pretty noobish question but I wonder how to install multiple packages
that have the same prefix with Pacman.
To make myself more clear, I like to install all gstreamer packages and for that I would
    like something similar to
    pacman -S gstreamer10*
Is there a command that does something like this available? Found nothing in the man pages.
Maybe some tricky stuff with pipes?
