Captivate 2 + Accessibility + 508

Good day all,
I have a question about something in Captivate 2 (was also a
feature in Captivate 1). If you go to the slide properties screen,
there is a button that you can select Accessibility. Once you click
on this, you have the option to insert the text from the slide. It
says at the top that this can be used for users with disabilities
and need the use of a screen reader. My question is, once you've
inserted the text, and check the 508 compliant box on publish, what
exactly has become 508 compliant?
If I try to use a screen reader like Jaws while the
simulation is playing, the screen reader doesn't read the slides.
Should it? I'm a bit confused on how Captivate is exactly 508
compliant!

Hi smejus57
Here is some information I captured at one point in time. It
was put forth by a former Macromedia employee by the name of Dave
Mozealous.
Captivate was only tested with JAWS version 6.1 or later and
Window Eyes 5.0. So make sure the customer is using JAWS 6.1 or
later or Window Eyes 5.0.
Try the following to resolve the issue:
Start JAWS
Open the .htm file
Press Ctrl (shut up jaws)
Press Ctrl+Home (top of page)
Press Arrow down once, listen, then Arrow down again. When on
button, press Enter.
After each slide loads, Press Ctrl+Home before reading.
*NOTE: Make sure you are using the ENTER button to continue,
or whatever key is assigned to the button. Using the Mouse button
makes JAWS incorrectly interpret the accessibility text.
Hopefully this was useful... Rick

  • Linking Captivate to Access DB, No LMS

I have been trying to find a solution to linking a captivate
test and scores to an access database since our company does not
have an LMS nor the budget for one. Any suggestions?

When you publish a Captivate with tracking, note the
    accompanying HTML
has code to communicate with the LMS.
If you can change that code to, say, post to a database
    instead, that
may work best, as Captivate is already trying to use those js
    functions
    anyway.

  • InDesign SWF and accessibility/508 compliance

    Hi,
I'm trying to ensure a simple SWF I created in InDesign meets basic accessibility requirements. Can I do this with InDesign's tagging features?  Would it work similar to creating an accessible PDF?
    Thanks

I'm guessing that that is not possible in InDesign's SWF files.
I think you would have to do that in Flash Professional.
Googling "SWF accessibility" brought me to this link to some Adobe TV videos:

  • Accessibility 508 issue in Acrobat; accessibility controls grayed out

Hi - I have to check PDF's in two different versions of Acrobat.  On my one computer, the accessbility functions work great.  Then when I went over to my other office on my laptop, I tried checking the accessbility and all of the same controls on the other computer were grayed out.  I'm pretty puzzled by this so I'm not sure if the laptop computer has some kind of persmissions blockage (I do this work for a government agency) or what.
Below is a side by side screenshot of the two computers' versions of Acrobat
Can someone tell me why those controls are grayed out and what I need to do to turn them on?  Thanks.

Hi - thank you for your reply.  One strange thing about this situation is on both of these computers, the Abrobat icon says "Pro" for both of them.  That's why I was so puzzled about this because although they appear to be version X and XI, they both said Pro but only one allows me to do accessibility.  Strange.

  • Captivate 7 and 508 compliance - can't tab to hyperlink text

I am creating courses that  have to be 508 compliant - i.e., you have to be able to tab to interactive elements and press Enter to select them.
I created hyperlink text in a text caption but the hyperlink does not seem to be included in the tabbing - i.e., you cannot select the hyperlink without a mouse. Am I missing something?
If I use a text button instead of the hyperlink, I cannot left justify the text in a text button.
If I use a smart object as a button, I can left justify the text and tab to it, but cannot select it with an Enter press!
The only method I can think of is to put a transparent text button over the text caption. Is there a better way?

Can someone else trst this for me?

  • Flash CC HTML5 Canvas Accessibility - 508

Has anyone had success creating a Tabindex order within a Flash CC HTML5 Canvas file?  Been using Flash for online training courses but looking to make the move to HTML5 using Flash CC.  When you create a new HTML5 Canvas file the Accessibility panel is not available.  I have been using Actionscript for several years to handle the Tabindex order so the fact that HTML5 canvas files don't have the Accessibility panel available can't be a good sign.

Accessibility in HTML5 is handled strictly in the HTML. It is usually done with descriptors added to attributes of elements. Each browser handles, or doesn't handle, these attributes in a slightly different way. The result is that accessibility is at least as complex as CSS in HTML5. Here's an article that should help to make it unclear: HTML5 accessibility - work in progress March 2014.
In any case incorporating accessibility into the HTML5 translator for Flash is probably not going to happen any time soon.

  • Captivate cannot access "captivate_v30.dat"

This error message just came up after I published a .cp file

information at all in this regard. Any guidance would be

    Hi again mrfibuli
Words of wisdom. Hmmmm (scratching chin)
Basically, you should stay out of most trouble by observing
    the following:
    Tips for pleasant Captivating experiences
    1. Never ever ever ever ever even THINK about working with
your project while it is stored on a network drive. Did I mention
    you shouldn't work on a LAN? ;)
    2. Consider 50 - 65 slides to be your rule of thumb upper
    limit.
    3. Did I mention you shouldn't keep your projects on a
network? It's not that keeping things on a network for backup is
bad. It's fine to keep projects there for backup purposes. What you
don't want to do is to open Captivate, browse to a project while it
is stored on a network drive, then open it up and make edits.
    4. Review the MacroChat linked below:
    http://www.Adobe.com/go/e8c54c7b
    5. Oh, don't edit your projects while they are on a network
resource. (Is there an echo in here?)
    Cheers... Rick

  • 508 / Accessibility for Web Dynpro

    Hi,
Does web dynpro support accessibility / 508 ?
As I have read and heard on teh techEd the web dynpro stack9 will support this, so I can set the property sap-accessibility=x resp. accessibilityDescription="testtext".
Also in the thread "Keyboard access to UI Element"
Posted on: Jul 29, 2004 10:27 PM, by user: Armin Reichert
Accessibility has been addressed and will be supported in the production release.
So I have download the WAS 6.40 as a 90 days test licence. But in the NW Dev. Studio there is no such a attribute for the GUI elements. Do I have to upgrade? But how?
    Regards Ralph

    Hi Armin,
    thanks for the quick reply.
What I mean is, that in the presentation PRTL205 of the TechEd2004, on page 30 there is a screenshot from the NW Dev. Studio where you can see a property 'accessibilityDescription' for a GUI Element. Is property is not in the current NW Dev.Studio which you can download from SDN.
You know, if there is a 'newer' IDE than the one you can download?
    Regards
    Ralph

  • Section 508 - Help

We are just beginning to work with Captivate and trying to
test the 508 compliancy issues. Does anyone know of a website that
used Captivate that is 508 compliant that we can run some tests
    on?

    Hello linwood,
Whilst I don't have any web sites I can point you to. Here is
information on what Adobe Captivate does to be Section 508
    compliant.
What does Adobe Captivate do to be Section 508 compliant?
Selecting the 508 compliance option makes certain elements in
Adobe Captivate projects accessible or open to accessibility
technology. For example, if you select the 508 option and you have
filled in the project name and project description text boxes in
the Project Properties dialog box, a screen reader will read the
name and description when the Adobe Captivate SWF file is played.
The following Adobe Captivate elements are accessible when
the 508 compliance option is selected:
    • Project name (derived from Project Properties)
    • Project description (derived from Project Properties)
    • Slide accessibility text
    • Slide label (derived from Slide Properties)
    • Buttons
    Creating accessible projects 65
    • Playback controls (function of each button is read by
    screen readers)
    • Password protection (if an Adobe Captivate SWF file
is password protected, the prompt for a
password is read by screen readers)
    • Question slides (title, question, answers, button
text, and scoring report are read by screen
    readers)
Note: Output generated with the Section 508 option will be
    displayed with all supported browsers.
However, your output may not be Section 508 compliant unless
it is viewed with Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer is the only browser with support for MSAA
    (Microsoft Active Accessibility).
Note: To access Flash content using a screen reader, users
need to have Flash Player 6 or later installed.
I hope this is of some use to you.
    Regards,
    Mark

  • New development in Flash Captivate and Content Management

My compay currently uses Serena Collage for Content

development. We have an upcoming e-learning project that we are
considering developing in Captivate and Flash. We are mandated that
all development be Section 508 compliant and e-learning must be

Can I continue to use Collage to manage content developed

According to documentation Captivate SCORM and 508 compliant and is
Flash 508 compliant is this correct?
    Please advise.

I am not familiar with Collage or its requirements, but Flash
MX 2004 is 508 compliant, I have had to make partial and full
compliant courses with it. That being said, it took us a decent
    amount of time and effort.

  • What does the Auto Label in Accessibility do in HTML5 output?

It says that if selected, Auto Label will generate labeling for SWF output. But what does it do for HTML5?  Does it not apply? So if you are going to output for HTML5, all the accessibility (508 compliance) info needs to be filled in manually for every single object??
    Thanks,

  • Archived versions with Captivate subscription?

Hi there. For those of you who have a Captivate subscription -   Can you tell me if the subscription to Captivate allows access to older versions of Captivate? I saw in the description of the Creative Cloud that archived versions will be available of some programs. Is Captivate one of the programs for which archived versions are available?
My team's responsibilities include authoring tool support for Captivate.  The people we support do not all use the same version of the authoring tool. That means that we sometimes need to have access to multiple versions so we can troubleshoot.
For example, right now we have colleagues using versions 5 and 6 of Captivate, and undoubtedly soon version 7 will also be used.
I’m not asking if the features of previous versions will be available in Captivate 7. I am asking if the older versions themselves will be accessible. I say this because I tried asking an Adobe Rep about this during a chat and she kept repeating that the features of previous versions would be available in version 7. That's great, but doesn't help me when I need to assist somebody who only have version 5.
    Thanks!

Thanks Rod. Wow, that's a lot of versions of Captivate on one machine! I currently have Captivate 4 and 5 on my machine, so I understand that they can be run together.
But what I was wondering is if the subscription to Captivate allows access to older versions or just the latest version. For example, I don't have Captivate 6 yet and the subscription starts at Captivate 7. Would the subscription allow me access to an archived version of Captivate 6 as well, or would I have to buy that separately?

  • Captivate Video Quality issues when post to YouTube

We are using Captivate 7 and I am creating training for the MS Dynamics CRM application.
I created a video demo selecting the application window as the screen size. When I replay the video in Captivate or when I publish to Adobe COnnect, the replay looks fine. When I publish to YouTube however the text on the screens I recorded is very blurry. How do I get a better result with the publishing to YouTube? .

I'd imagine Youtube would be better if you're targeting overseas. I'd have to believe that YouTube/Google has a more global delivery setup than the smaller Vimeo...so video may play back better overseas via YouTube than Vimeo.
Plus, integrating Vimeo video into Captivate may be more of a challenge...
On the other hand, maybe not. Can you integrate a Vimeo video using the Web Object? If so, that may give you MORE flexibility than the YouTube interaction object.
Additionally, I know you can setup private channels on Vimeo...so if you don't want your content visible to everyone, that may be a better option. Whether you can setup the URL in Captivate to access those private videos on Vimeo though, I'm unsure. I don't think that would be as possible/easy to do via the YouTube interaction widget...

  • Can anyone recommend a lightbox software that is completely 508 compliant?

Can anyone recommend a truly 508 compliant lightbox software? By that I mean, you can access the lightbox with the keyboard only (no mouse action at all), i.e. you can tab through the lightbox gallery, access any links for more info within the pop up box, close the last box in the gallery, not have the screen reader read all the html in addition to captions, and make sure that the screenreader knows there is a lightbox there and announces it.
I bought Ajatix Lightbox v.3.1.6.0 plug in for Dreamweaver as it said it was 508 compliant. It makes beautiful lightboxes but it has some problems in that I cannot close the last lightbox in the gallery without tabbing through the rest of the site and landing back on the page link and reloading the page. Also accessing a link within the pop up is just as problematic. You have to tab through the rest of the site again until it lands on the link. Long winded. Perhaps this is as good as it gets? I've been back and forth with Ajatix who have tried to help but there doesn't seem to be a clear cut way to make these items easier.
Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else had run into this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Pam

Focus is the main problem in Modal Windows.  I think that unless you have the skills to code your own, it's probably best to avoid them.
