Capture 1080p 24fps in FCX ?

Recently purchased a Canon VH20 HDV. It can film in 1080p (yes p) at 24 fps. Can FCX work with 24fps at this resolution? If so what Easy Setup should I use capturing and what would be best to use exporting to tape or DVD?
I have heard FCX can only handle 24fps using the 720p setup. Is this correct?
New to this and any help ansering these questions would be appreciated.

FCE does not support any 24p. You can bodge it to do it with some formats, but not this with. It also shoots, apparently, in a non-standard 1080 HDV frame resolution. You need a resolution independent application to do this, i.e. FCP.

  • Best settings for 1080p 24fps footage

    Hi all,
Shooting great stuff at 1080p 24fps with a Canon DSLR. My audio is 48 at 24bit. I am wondering what my best settings would be for:
    1) Full size, full quality
    2) A more manageable size (50%?) at full quality
I realize that the end use matters. I am shooting webisodes, so they will wind up on my own website as lightbox videos and eventually on sites such a YouTube.
    Thanks!
    Scott

It's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.
But, FYI, you can't see true video quality on your computer screen. Put it on a professional production monitor, and use video scopes to see a difference.
The image quality is not what is the issue here. It's file management. ProRes HQ makes a very large file size, stresses your system out more, and gives you no extra advantages. XDCAM is a Long-GOP codec, which stresses your system out more, but you keep small file sizes. ProRes 422 (or ProRes (LT)) will give you a good balance between the two, and help your CPU, data pipes, hard drives, RAM, etc handle the very taxing data flow of video streaming in RT that is desired for video editing.
Long-GOP formats will require more rendering (less RT performance), and when you do render, they will have to "conform", making things fie the Long-GOP frame structure again. When you export, it takes longer, due to the specific and complex arranging of specific types of frames in proper order due to the Long-GOP format. Compressor transcodes will take much longer to perform.
Again, it's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.

  • DVDSP4 Crashes When importing 1080p 24fps clip

    Hi Everybody,
My problem is that I'm trying to import a file that is 1080p@24fps (and I think a bitrate around 12 Mbps). Every time I import it, DVDSP crashes immediately. Everything is up to date, but I am running Leopard, so I don't know if that would make a difference.
Here are two example clips (they are from the Planet Earth Series)
    http://palmdalian.com/crash/PE01_2.mov (4MB)
    http://palmdalian.com/crash/crash_clip.mov (7MB)
    Thanks for any help/advice.

Well, looking in the manual, DVDSP does not support 1080p@24fps. Any suggestions an what the best supported format would be to convert to(720p30, 720p60, 720p50, 1080i60, or 1080i50), given the source material?

  • Capturing 1080p 24p from p2

I have received a drive with footage that was shot on the Panasonic HVX200 with P2 cards. After speaking with the DP, the format of the footage is DVCPro HD 1080p 24p (not 24pa). After performing the Log and Transfer, when I look at the clip I see 3 progressive frames, then 1 interlaced frame (repeats).
Page 66 of the manual for working with FCP & HD video indicates
To remove standard 3:2 (2:3:2:3) pulldown from 1080p24 footage, you need to
capture the footage as 1080i60 (29.97 fps) and then use Cinema Tools to remove
    the pulldown.
    Page 100 indicates:
The Import Panasonic P2 window cannot remove standard 3:2 pulldown.
To convert footage with 3:2 pulldown, you can ingest the media at 29.97 fps and
then use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown.
    Page 103 indicates:
Use Remove Advanced Pulldown command in Final Cut Pro or Cinema Tools after capture or ingest.
I am familiar with Cinema Tools, and have performed the conform process before with footage from the HVX100 in Standard Definition with no problem. However, when I attempted to remove the pulldown in cinema tools, the footage appears unaffected even though the frame rate is now 23.98.
I read in another manual "Workflow for Final Cut Pro and the Panasonic AG-HVX200"
that 1080p 24 is Not supported at this time.
Has anyone had success capturing 1080p 24p from a p2 card and then removing the pulldown to get 23.98 with progressive frames?

Just to make sure, since you mentioned advanced pulldown. You should be removing regular pulldown, not advanced pulldown. Also, conform is for files that are already progressive. What you want is reverse telecine. Try doing a batch reverse telecine on a few clips. I've had problems in the distant past doing it on single clips because I wasn't starting with an A frame.

  • Mixing D3100 1080p 24fps with Gopro hero 1080p30fps

    Hey all,
I want to shoot constant POV Video with my Gopro hero hd, and then capture some unique stuff with my Nikon
D3100 and combine them in one project using Premiere Elements 9.  If I set them both to 1080p, then the Gopro is 30fps, and the Nikon 24fps.  I can match them both up at 720p 30fps, but the Gopro has a field of view that is too wide for my taste at that setting, and I hate giving up the quality.  Not sure about how to handle audio yet, but will eventually use a separate audio recorder at some point.

I hope to share these videos on Vimeo HD. I am a novice, and I am not sure what effect converting a clip to a differant fps would have, and I am not sure is this is necessary. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thom

You guys must be pulling your hair out, because I am obviously not doing a good job stating my problem.  Please bear with me!
You are both trying hard to explain why I am having trouble dealing with the video captured with my two cameras, but that is not my problem.  I have successfully imported 720p 30fps video from each camera into their own project in PE9, edited it, and outputted them to Vimeo with no real issues.  I am also confident that I can figure out how to combine the video from both cameras as long as I set them both to 720p 30fps, although I might be a little naive.  My problem, as I see it, is that the 1080p setting on the Hero records only at 30fps, and the 1080p setting on my Nikon records only at 24fps.
    Should I:
a.)  leave both cameras at 720fps 30fps, accept the quality hit, be happy, and stop bugging you guys.
b.)  convert one or the other to a matching frame rate.  Not sure if it is best, or possible, to go up to 30, or down to 24?
c.)  some other option that I am not seeing because I don't know what I am talking about.
    Thanks for your patience,

  • Capturing 1080p video - Weird shakiness in Log and Capture window...

Okay, so I have an HDCAM Deck. I need to capture it to Final Cut Studio 2. I have my settings as 1080p 23.98 Apple ProRes 422HQ.
When inside of the log and capture tool, on the VERY left and VERY right of the video, you see weird shaking. On the broadcast monitor, you can't see anything. The rest of the video in Log and Capture appears to be fine. Any idea why I'm seeing this? Keep in mind it was shot on film at 23.98. I'm looking very closely at the broadcast monitor and not seeing shaky video. I just want to make sure my end product will be okay.
    Thanks!

What is the setting on the HDCam deck
might it be 1080 Psf 23.98? if so
    Try capturing at 23.98 Psf
what capture card are you using?

  • Capturing 720p 24fps as one clip

I've got about 45 minutes of tape for a client, shot 720p at 24fps, on miniDV tape.
Is there a way to capture it as one long clip, without breaking it up into individual clips on the time code start/stop (yes, I I have that disabled in the Capture Settings)?
I've learned to compensate for losing the first few seconds when individual clips are created, but it's still be nice to just give them the "raw tape" if possible.
    Thanks.

You are asking for trouble in two places -
    1. Your sync between audio/video can drift
    2. DV tape is never recorded as 24fps - it is always 29.97. If you want to remove the pulldown that is added at the time of recording, you'll want individual clips with a unified pulldown cadence to work with. Starting/stopping and discontinuous TC will wreck this process.

  • Capturing 1080P 60fps Aja Kona 3G speeding video up

First time posting... hopefully it can be solved because I am at wits end.
I am looking to capture 1080P60 off of an iPhone through HDMI using and HD-SDI converter with the Aja Kona 3G card (it saves it as an MOV format in Premiere). The capture portion in Premiere works great until it hits 12 GB of RAM and then the video speeds up disproportionally until the end of the capture/offload to HDD. This usually happens about 30-40 seconds in.  I know this is an extremely hot signal coming off but that is what I need. I know it’s not a RAM or system issue because it is a blazing machine with plenty of RAM and HDD space using RAID0. When I try to capture 720P video it records the video fine until around 18 GB of RAM and then does the same thing. Is there some limitation to the format I am using or capture or is it something I am doing wrong? The card doesn’t have many settings to change an input signal in Premiere so to me options are limited…
    System:
    Intel I7-3.20 GHz
    10TB RAID0
    64GB RAM
    Aja Kona 3G capture card

I have never seen an issue like this. The best thing I can suggest is to get in contact with AJA tech support. They are very knowledgeable and helpful with issues like this. Good luck.

  • Any way to import, play 1080p/24fps video from Sony DSC-HX200V

This Sony camera only comes with Windows software, but apparently iMovie/FCP can import.  However, the website states:
    Notes
When importing AVCHD movies as "iMovie" or "Final Cut Pro"
The AVCHD encoding method of the 2011 model is different from those of models released before 2010.
By updating the Mac OS to the most recent version (10.6.7 or higher), importing is possible.
    Cannot import 1080/60p(50p), 1080/24p movies.
Anyone know how I could convert the 1080/24p video shot by this camera, easily, into a format editable by FCP X? (or FCP studio 3)?
    Thanks
    Bob

That information is obsolete. FCP imports AVCHD media in any frame rate.

  • Best h264 workflow for editing multicam 1080p 24fps

I have had reasonable success in editing footage from my Canon 5D mkii in CS5 multicam on my quad-core win 7 machine.  I'm finding though that the exported encoded footage (uncompressed AVI) seems to have lost some of its colour rendition (I haven't ventured into colour grading as yet).  Is there a preferred workflow for lossless editing of h264 footage or should I convert it before importing into CS5?  Any suggestions?

It sounds like your offline-online protocol is not what it should be.
Make dv versions of your media.  Do not change the names of the clips.  Be sure you are carrying over the proper timecode to the dv versions.
Do your edit with the dv versions.
Highlight the converted DV clips in the browser and make off line.  Do not make the clips in the sequence offline.
Then reconnect the clips, but point instead at the HD clips.  Everything should repopulate-- sequences, etc.
    Does this not work?

  • How can I capture live HD video direct to hard drive?

    Hello,
My goal is to be able to capture 1080p video from a camcorder direct to the hard drive of a mac. Space is a concern, so ideally this would capture directly to a Mac Mini, but if the only option is to upgrade to a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro (for Thunderbolt), I may be able to work with that. What I know about so far are the offerings from Black Magic:
    1) The H.264 pro recorder: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/h264prorecorder/
    2) and the Ultra Studio 3D: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/ultrastudio3d/
With the first option, I'm worried about the quality. Ultra Studio 3D is very expensive ($1000) and would require upgrading to a MacBook Pro for Thunderbolt, but I'm open to that if it is the only way to get full 1080p quality.
I also have read about an app in the Firewire SDK called DHS cap. I haven't been able to try this since the cameras I have access do not have Firewire, but if people have had success with that, then I can purchase a camera that can connect through Firewire.
The last thing I've read about is Capture Magic HD. I would like to test this as well, but it appears the developers are out of business (their website is down), and i cannot find the software anywhere.
Any advice about the best way to go about this would be greatly appreciated. I've been googling away and searching forums for days now.

Really?  You've never opened up the capture window?
    Never since about CS2.
I have had a tapeless workflow for ever... so never had reason to even take a look at the Capture Window in later versions of Premiere.

  • Do I need to pre-convert 1080i files to 1080p in Compressor before editing in a FCP X Timeline?

I'm working on a project that's shot in 1080p, 23.97fps. A friend gave me some footage to add that was shot in 1080i, 29.97fps, on a Canon Vixia. FCP X will accept both, of course, as an event, and will even accept both in the same timeline, but what will happen if I try to edit or export them? Should I convert the 1080i to 1080p, 24fps. Final output only needs to be in 24fps.  Thanks for any help!!! I can't seem to find a straight answer on this.

Difficult question to answer - if you convert it first, you'll be recompressing it - so you'll lose quality that way. I guess the best idea would be to de-interlace and save uncompressed.
I'd be inclined to let FCP X take care of it but why not try a small section using both methods? If you can't see any difference in the result, I wouldn't worry.

  • Data Reading Capture Error - what's up with this?

I know a few others have posted about this, but I have not seen an explanation.
My stats: 10.4.2 (yes, I'm going to get 10.4.3 - I will eat my pants if that has anything to do with this), FCP 5.0.3, G4 1.5GHz Pbook, LaCie 250GB external firewire drive for capture (TONS of space), Sony GV D300 capture deck, footage shot on the Panasonic DVX100 24p camera. The tapes are non-dropframe.
The error reads: Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. To capture as much of your footage as possible, please log and capture a clip that ends before this segment, and another one that starts right after it.
This sounds to me suspiciously like Apple programmers punting on a known bug just prior to release, rather than something ACTUALLY wrong with my tapes, my computer, my connections, my drives or my deck.
The reason I say this is that I have just started a new project and am capturing five tapes of footage. I am on tape 4. I had no problem capturing from two of the 4 tapes so far - so my cables, deck, drive and software are fine.
On the 2 tapes that have given me problems, there is also discontinuous timecode. This is the DP's fault. However: the capture error is NOT occurring in places on the tape where the TC breaks (or skips, rather). THAT problem is simply causing the usual errors and requiring careful logging.
Instead, I get the error in question for clips that appear to be fine in terms of TC. When I get the capture error, I have actually been able to do 2 Capture Nows, but instead of capturing on both sides of the problem area ("this segment" in the error message parlance), I have been able to capture ALL OF THE TIMECODE in 2 clips. That is, when the capture fails and kicks out a mini clip (up to the point where the capture snagged), I can start a Capture Now from one frame after the last TC in the mini clip and Capture from there to the end.
So that suggests to me that there is nothing wrong with my tapes, either. To me, this is conclusive evidence of a pure software error.
I am wondering, therefore, if there is anyone from Apple monitoring these boards who can tell me what is ACTUALLY happening here and what to do, because it's very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Nathan Jongewaard

My suggestion is that you reconsider whether your in Non-Drop frame. NTSC standard is Dropframe 29.97. I'm afraid you may have this backwards. DVX100's default to dropframe (29.97fps) in the USA. FCP could be encountering a pulldown cadence every few minutes because it expects a frame drop that is not there.
Remember the frame drop only occurs every few minutes so this makes sense. With standard NTSC capture (not 24fps pulldown removal) such dropped frames don't mess anything up. They just subtly shift the timing and sync of the audio track. You could have captured this way for years and rarely seen a problem with short clips. When doing a pulldown removal, a missing or in your case extra frame can confuse the pulldown removal system as it expects to find the video encoded in 29.97 rather than 30fps.

  • Imovie won't export 1080p...

Hi Folks, I understand this topic has been discussed before but all previous solutions have not worked for me so, want to see if anyone in 2015 has any new insights. This is a long one, My apologies upfront.
I have footage shot from 3 different cameras: a Canon 5mkII, GoPro Hero 4 Black, and a Sony VG-30. All set to 1080p 24fps....cool?....cool.
The Sony VG30 records in AVCHD which is a friggin nightmare file format. I had a lot of trouble getting a solid conversion to .mov that said I did successfully convert them to usable .mov. I have double checked the files in quicktime to verify that they are all 1080p files. HOWEVER The formats appear to be different. Would this create an issue for a final export?? Here are the specs for each camera:
    - Gopro: GoPro AVC ENcoder, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
    - Canon 5dkII: H.264, 1920x1080 Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian sign... (that's all quicktime shows)
Ok so the Sony VG30, Like i said I had a **** of a time getting a solid conversion, it seemed the longer clips needed a different conversation than the shorter ones, I had to do 3 different conversions to get all the footage into something usable here are the 3 formats:
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to .mp4 with Adobe Lightroom: AVC Coding, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz Stereo (L R)
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to aac.mov with "Free AVCHD to MOV" (from app store): H.264, 1920x1080 AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
Sony VG30 AVCHD/MTS Converted  to prores.mov with "Free AVCHD to MOV" (from app store): Apple ProRes 422, 1920x1080 Linear PCM, 32 bit little-endian floati...(that's all quicktime shows)
Ok so we are on the same page. We have verified that all the files are 1080p.
in iMovie I have a created a black 1920x1080 background as the first clip to start the video. As I understand it, iMovie uses the first clip to determine the movies resolution. additionally the 2nd clip comes from the Canon, which I've never had issues with. So we can rule that out too.
The last thing I did was duplicate the movie and remove all clips from the Sony and GoPro camera. This is where it gets strange. I removed clips one at time, and in between each clip removal I checked the export setting to see if 1080p became available. After removing ALL the sony and Gopro clips, 1080p WAS Available!!!!!
    BUT!!!!!
As this point the only clips in the movie were from the Canon, This is my primary camera and never have an issue like this. Thinking the problem was solved I started adding clips from just the Canon, after adding a few clips i check the export settings again and 1080p is GRAYED OUT!!!! ***!!! only 720p is available.
So this is where I'm at. I have no clue why this thing is stuck at 720p. It defies logic and I'm really stressing out. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. I'm at a point where I starting from scratch is practically not an option. I'm assuming the formats has something to do with it, If someone could tell me which is the incompatible format, swapping out the clips isn't that bad, but right now, I'd spend hours in trial and error to figure out which clips are the wrong format. It would be a huge help. Thank you in advance!
    --RC

Just an update, on the duplicate movie i made, I deleted all clips EXCEPT the 1920x1080 background image in the first clip position, and the export option is still stuck at 720p!
    unbelievable....
It's clear that the movies inaccessible metadata or preferences are locked up at 720p. Why on earth did they take away "export using quicktime"??? ARGH! so frustrating.

    or
    2) Capture both HDV sources as ProRes (using capture card) and edit on a ProRes timeline?
2a) How would I deal with the DVCPROHD footage in this case? Re-ingest as ProRes or edit it on ProRes timeline?
2b) Oh yeah, I also need to multiclip.
    Thoughts?

Well, I just captured 1080p to 720p...both were 23.98, and it looks great. going from 1080 to 720 should be fine...it is when you blow up the image that you can have issues. Although I output 720p to 1080p all the time and it looks fine.
Oh, and I use the Kona 3. I'd verify that the Decklink can cross convert 1080 to 720...it most likely cannot, as I know it doesn't do 720p to 1080...which is why I bought the Kona 3. Oh, that and the Decklink only upconverts SD to 1080i, not 720p. There is a reason it is cheaper than the Kona.
